You can make a footlong pizza without mixing dough: warm refrigerated store-bought dough, stretch it into a narrow rectangle about 12 inches long, add a restrained layer of sauce, cheese and toppings, and bake it according to the dough package. The package directions matter more than any universal pizza temperature because rolled crusts, dough balls and other refrigerated formats handle and bake differently.
The shape in this guide is a practical home adaptation. “Footlong” means roughly 12 inches from end to end; the sources do not establish one tested width or a universal bake time for this narrow format.
What makes a pizza “footlong”?
A footlong pizza is a long, narrow pizza approximately 12 inches in length rather than a round pie. The 12-inch length is an editorial target for the shape, not a tested dimension from the cited recipes. Choose the width that fits your pan and leaves enough room for the dough to bake evenly.
A narrow base has less surface area than a conventional sheet-pan pizza, so heavy toppings can make the center wet or difficult to cook. The most reliable approach is a modest amount of sauce, an even layer of cheese and toppings distributed in a single layer.

Choose the right store-bought dough
Read the package before opening the dough. Refrigerated rolled crust, a dough ball and other fresh-dough formats can have different temperatures, resting requirements, pan recommendations and baking methods.
| Dough format | What to do | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerated rolled crust | Unroll or unfold it as directed, place it on the specified pan, and follow the printed temperature and timing. One Pillsbury refrigerated-crust example uses 400°F on a nonstick cookie sheet and 425°F with other pan types. | Do not transfer that temperature or timing to another brand or dough format. |
| Refrigerated dough ball | Allow the rest specified on the package, then press and stretch it gradually on a prepared pan. | Do not assume it will stretch like a sheet of rolled crust. |
| Other fresh or refrigerated dough | Use its storage, warming, pan and baking instructions as the controlling directions. | Do not use a commercial-oven schedule from another recipe. |
The package is the authority for your particular product. The temperatures above illustrate why checking the label is essential, not a universal footlong-pizza rule.
Gather the pan, ingredients and tools
Essential equipment
- An oven-safe cookie sheet or rimmed baking sheet that can hold a 12-inch narrow rectangle.
- Parchment, nonstick preparation or oil, only if your dough instructions call for it.
- A spoon or spatula for sauce, a grater or knife for toppings, and a broad spatula for serving.
- An oven mitt and a cooling surface.
A rimmed baking sheet is a workable choice for rectangular pizza. A pizza stone is not essential to this adaptation; using one would require following the dough maker’s directions for preheating, launching and baking.

- One package of refrigerated store-bought pizza dough.
- Pizza sauce in a quantity that lightly covers the dough without pooling.
- Shredded or sliced melting cheese.
- Cooked or ready-to-eat toppings cut into small pieces.
- A small amount of oil when the package or pan method calls for it.
Keep the topping load deliberately modest. The narrow shape leaves less room for excess moisture and weight than a broad pizza.
How to make a footlong pizza, step by step
1. Heat the oven and prepare the pan
Set the oven to the temperature printed on your dough package. As a product-specific example, Pillsbury’s refrigerated-crust instructions specify 400°F on a nonstick cookie sheet and 425°F for other pan types. Prepare the pan exactly as directed: some products call for a bare nonstick surface, while others may call for oil or another release method.
Put the rack where your package recommends it. If the instructions do not specify a rack position, use a central position so the top and bottom receive balanced heat.

2. Warm cold dough enough to stretch
Cold dough is usually harder to press into a long shape. Follow the package’s warming instructions and keep the dough covered or packaged as directed while it comes toward a workable temperature.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Pillsbury’s sheet-pan recipe allows about 30 minutes at room temperature. Another dough method uses 15 to 30 minutes. Those periods are examples, not a replacement for the directions printed on your dough. Do not leave dough out longer than the product’s handling and food-safety guidance allows.
3. Oil the pan when appropriate
If your method calls for oil, apply a light, even coating to the pan or the area where the dough will sit. The published rectangular-pizza method uses an oiled rimmed baking sheet. Too much oil can make the base greasy, while too little release preparation can make a thin rectangle difficult to lift after baking.
4. Press and stretch into a narrow rectangle
Place the dough near the center of the prepared pan. Press from the middle outward, gradually extending the dough until it is about 12 inches long. Work in several directions rather than pulling hard on one edge.
Leave a slightly thicker perimeter if you want a defined rim. Keep the center reasonably even so sauce and cheese do not collect in one low spot. The rectangle does not need perfectly straight corners; an even thickness is more important.
5. Rest dough that springs back
If the dough contracts as soon as you stretch it, stop pulling. Let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes, then try again. The rectangular method notes that elastic dough can need more than one rest before it stays extended.

Use the pause to prepare toppings rather than forcing the dough. Repeated hard stretching can create thin spots and tears, while a short rest gives the dough time to relax.
6. Add sauce, cheese and toppings sparingly
Spoon a modest amount of sauce over the center, leaving the rim less covered if you want it to brown as a crust. Add cheese in an even layer, then arrange toppings so they are distributed from end to end rather than piled in the middle.
Cut bulky toppings into small pieces and use cooked toppings when the package or recipe requires them to be cooked first. Keep the surface visible between pieces; a loaded footlong pizza takes longer to heat through and can leave the center soft.
7. Bake until the crust is deeply golden and the cheese is melted
Bake using the package’s temperature, rack position and method. The exact bake time for this narrow footlong shape is not established by the cited sources, so judge the pizza by its appearance and the product directions rather than by a universal timer.
One Pillsbury canned refrigerated-crust example prebakes the crust for 8 minutes, then bakes it for another 6 to 10 minutes after adding toppings. That schedule is specific to that product and method; do not apply it automatically to a dough ball or another brand.
Begin checking when the package’s suggested time approaches. The crust should be deeply golden, the cheese should be fully melted, and the center should no longer look wet. If the cheese is ready but the base is still pale, continue according to the package method while watching the top closely.

8. Cool briefly, then slice across the width
Move the pan to a heat-safe surface and let the pizza cool briefly so the cheese settles and the crust is easier to handle. For the footlong presentation, cut across the narrow width into strips or small portions. A broad spatula can support each piece as you transfer it.

Adjust the result: thinner and crisper or softer and thicker
| Goal | How to approach it | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Thinner, crisper crust | Stretch the dough more broadly within the pan, keep toppings light, and use a package-approved prebake when one is offered. | Prebaking times are product-specific. Pillsbury presents prebaking as an option for a crispier crust, but its timing should not be generalized. |
| Softer, thicker crust | Leave the dough a little thicker, avoid stretching it to the full available pan area, and keep the topping layer moderate. | A thicker center may need longer to finish; rely on browned crust, melted cheese and the package method rather than an invented bake time. |
Stretching changes thickness more reliably than simply adding more toppings. If you want a softer result, do not compensate with a heavy sauce or cheese layer; that adds moisture rather than controlled dough thickness.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to prevent common footlong-pizza problems
The dough keeps shrinking
Stop stretching and rest it for 5 to 10 minutes. Try again with gentler pressure from the middle outward. If it still resists, use the package’s longer warming or resting guidance instead of forcing the dough.
The rectangle tears
Pause and let the dough rest. Patch a small tear by pressing nearby dough over it, then continue with lighter pressure. Avoid pulling one corner to reach the 12-inch length; that creates a thin weak spot.
The center is soggy
Reduce the sauce and topping quantity on the next pizza, spread ingredients evenly, and make sure the oven has reached the package temperature. A product-approved prebake can improve crispness when the instructions provide one. Do not use an unverified commercial-oven timing as a fix.
The edges brown before the middle is done
Keep the rim only slightly thicker, avoid an oversized raised edge, and watch the pizza closely near the end of the package’s stated bake range. If the package specifies a different rack position or pan material, follow that direction.

The crust is pale when the cheese is melted
Check that the oven was fully heated and that the pan matches the package’s stated type. Continue baking only as needed to brown the crust, monitoring the cheese so it does not overcook.
The pizza sticks to the pan
Use the release preparation specified by the dough package. A rimmed sheet-pan method may use oil, while a product designed for a nonstick cookie sheet may not need it. Let the pizza cool briefly, then loosen the edges with a spatula before cutting.
Sheet pan or pizza stone?
A rimmed sheet pan is sufficient for this long rectangular adaptation and is supported by the published rectangular-pizza method. It also makes pressing and stretching easier because the rim gives you a physical boundary.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A stone can be used only if your dough package explains how to preheat and bake on one. A stone does not remove the need to follow the dough’s temperature and handling instructions, and transferring a soft, narrow rectangle can be more awkward than baking it on the pan where it was shaped.
Serving and storing leftovers safely
Serve the pizza in crosswise strips while the crust is still pleasantly warm. If you are feeding several people, cutting smaller portions makes the footlong shape easy to share without requiring a second pizza.
Refrigerate leftovers within two hours after cooking, following Pillsbury’s general home-pizza guidance. Place the cooled portions in a covered container or wrap them according to your normal leftover-storage practice. When reheating, warm only what you plan to eat and use an appliance method appropriate for the container.
A compact checklist
- Read the exact dough package instructions before setting the oven.
- Prepare the specified pan; use a rimmed baking sheet if the method calls for one.
- Warm cold dough for the package-approved period.
- Press from the center outward into a narrow rectangle about 12 inches long.
- Rest 5 to 10 minutes if the dough springs back, then stretch again.
- Use modest, evenly distributed sauce, cheese and toppings.
- Bake by the package method and look for a deeply golden crust and melted cheese.
- Cool briefly, slice across the width, and refrigerate leftovers within two hours.
The dependable formula is simple: let the dough’s package control temperature and timing, let the dough rest when it resists, and treat the 12-inch narrow shape as an adaptation rather than a fixed tested recipe. That combination gives you a manageable footlong pizza without making dough from scratch.
