To make a Factions server, run Minecraft: Java Edition on a compatible Java runtime, use Paper as the server implementation, install a Factions plugin such as FactionsUUID, accept the EULA, configure the generated server files, and then test claims, permissions, chat, and faction relations before inviting players. Friends connecting from outside your home network may also require firewall and router port-forwarding changes.

This guide covers a maintainable setup rather than a one-click demonstration: choosing compatible versions, performing the first startup, installing and configuring FactionsUUID, deciding between home hosting and managed hosting, securing the server, and diagnosing the failures that most often stop players from joining.

What a Factions server actually consists of

A Factions server is not a separate edition of Minecraft. It is a Java Edition server with a server implementation and plugins that add territory and social rules. The basic stack is:

  • Minecraft: Java Edition: the edition supported by the official dedicated-server download.
  • Java Runtime Environment: the compatible Java installation needed to launch the server JAR.
  • Paper: a Java server implementation focused on performance and a plugin API.
  • FactionsUUID: a plugin that supplies factions, claims, protected land, alliances, enemies, and warfare.
  • Supporting plugins: optional, but permissions, economy, chat, and map or protection integrations must be compatible with the selected Minecraft and Paper versions.

Every layer is version-sensitive. A server can start while a plugin is unusable, or a plugin can load while a dependent feature fails. Select the Minecraft version first, then choose a Paper build and FactionsUUID release intended for that version, and finally add supporting plugins that document the same compatibility.

Choose Java Edition and a server platform

Use Java Edition

The official Minecraft server download is for Java Edition. Mojang’s instructions require a compatible Java Runtime Environment to launch the JAR. Bedrock clients do not become compatible merely because a Factions plugin is installed; plan for Java Edition clients unless you separately add and maintain a cross-play solution, which is outside this setup.

Why Paper is a practical base

Paper is a Java server implementation designed to improve server performance and expose an API for extensions. Its administration documentation describes plugins as the primary way to add functionality. That makes Paper a more suitable base for Factions than an unmodified server when you need claims, permissions, chat behavior, or economy integration.

Download a Paper build for the exact Minecraft version you intend to run. Do not select Paper by download date alone: the Minecraft version in the filename and the plugin’s supported versions must agree.

Create the server directory and complete the first run

Use a dedicated directory so that the world, configuration, logs, and plugins are easy to back up and restore. Keep this directory separate from personal files and give the account running the server only the operating-system access it needs.

  1. Install a compatible Java runtime. Verify that the runtime can launch the chosen Paper JAR. If the Java command is missing or points to an incompatible version, fix that before troubleshooting Minecraft.
  2. Download the selected server JAR. Place the Paper JAR in the dedicated directory. Rename it to a simple filename if that makes your start script easier to maintain, but record which build it represents.
  3. Start the server from a terminal. A typical invocation is java -jar paper.jar nogui; replace paper.jar with your actual filename. The first run creates files and normally stops because the EULA has not yet been accepted.
  4. Open eula.txt. Change eula=false to eula=true, save the file, and only do this if you agree to Minecraft’s EULA.
  5. Start the server again. The server generates or completes server.properties and creates the initial world. Wait for the console to report that it is ready before connecting.
  6. Stop it cleanly before editing or copying files. Use the server’s stop command rather than killing the process. Back up the world and configuration now, before adding plugins or changing versions.

Edit server.properties only after the first successful startup. Set the gameplay and access options you understand, and keep a copy of the original file so a bad value can be reverted. The official setup guidance warns that home-network configuration changes affect your network; do not expose a server until you understand the firewall and router changes involved.

Install Paper plugins safely

Use the correct plugins directory

After Paper has started once, it creates a plugins directory. Stop the server, copy the plugin JAR into that directory, and start Paper again. Paper reads plugin metadata for dependencies, commands, and other declared information, so inspect the plugin’s documentation and startup log rather than assuming that any JAR will work.

Build a small, known-good stack first

Start with Paper and FactionsUUID. Add permissions, economy, chat, map, or protection integrations one at a time. Restart and inspect the console after each addition. This isolates dependency errors and makes it clear which plugin changed a command, event, or configuration file.

Never overwrite a live configuration during an upgrade without a backup. A plugin may add new keys, rename settings, or alter defaults. Keep a dated copy of the world, server.properties, the entire plugins directory, and any permission or economy data before replacing a JAR.

Install and configure FactionsUUID

Install the Factions plugin

  1. Download a FactionsUUID release that explicitly supports your Minecraft and Paper versions.
  2. Stop the Paper server cleanly.
  3. Copy the FactionsUUID JAR into the server’s plugins folder.
  4. Start the server and watch the console for dependency, version, or configuration errors.
  5. Stop the server after the first plugin-enabled run and review the configuration files that were generated.

FactionsUUID’s project documentation says its release JAR belongs in plugins and that default configuration files are created on first run. Use those generated files as the authoritative starting point for your release; do not copy settings from an old tutorial without checking whether the option still exists.

What FactionsUUID provides

The plugin adds the core systems players expect from a Factions server:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Faction creation and descriptions.
  • Territory claims and protected land.
  • Faction power and claim rules.
  • Member invitations, roles, and promotions.
  • Alliances, truces, and enemies.
  • Warfare and the associated land-protection behavior.
  • Faction chat and integration with other chat systems.
  • Special areas such as safezones and warzones.

Configure rules before opening to the public

Review the generated settings for faction names and descriptions, claim costs or limits, power behavior, safezone and warzone treatment, permissions, chat, economy hooks, and map or protection integrations. Decide what should happen when a member leaves, loses power, or is attacked, and document those rules for players before launch.

FactionsUUID support documents explicit faction targets for special areas, including /f claim --faction safezone and /f claim --faction warzone. Use the command form supported by your installed release and verify the result with a non-operator account. If you use another chat plugin, FactionsUUID’s built-in Paper chat integration can be disabled so the two systems do not compete for chat formatting or routing.

Match Minecraft, Paper, and plugin versions

Version matching is the most important compatibility check. Select and test a complete set rather than mixing the newest file for each component.

Component What must match Evidence and caution
Minecraft The server version your clients will join Choose this first; it determines the compatible Paper and plugin builds.
Paper A build for that Minecraft version Paper’s API and plugin behavior can change between Minecraft releases.
FactionsUUID The release’s stated Minecraft/Paper support FactionsUUID 4.3.0, published November 25, 2025, targets and requires Minecraft 1.21.10 and will not run on older versions.
Supporting plugins The same server version plus declared dependencies Check permissions, economy, chat, map, and protection integrations individually.

Release notes matter even when a version number looks close. FactionsUUID 4.6.0, published June 28, 2026, describes additional upgrade and Vault behavior changes. Read the release notes for the release you install, identify breaking changes, and test the upgrade on a copy of the world before replacing the production files.

Design the faction gameplay

Claims, power, and protection

Set a clear relationship between faction power and territory. Players should know how much land a new faction can claim, what causes power to change, whether abandoned claims expire, and how unclaiming works. Test both successful and rejected claims. Have a staff procedure for resolving an accidental claim, a trapped player, or a disputed border.

Safezones and warzones

Use a safezone for protected community infrastructure such as a spawn area, and a warzone for contested or staff-controlled space. Check building, breaking, combat, container, and entry behavior in each area. Do not assume that naming an area “safe” changes every interaction; verify the actual protection rules with ordinary player accounts.

Diplomacy and chat

Decide whether alliances, truces, and enemies affect combat, access, or only display. Publish those rules before players form factions. Test faction chat, public chat, staff chat, and private messages after enabling any chat integration. If another plugin owns chat formatting, disable the overlapping built-in integration and confirm that faction messages still reach the intended recipients.

Let friends connect from outside your network

Home hosting

Players on the same local network may be able to connect using the host computer’s local address. Players elsewhere normally require two separate things: an operating-system firewall rule permitting the server and a router port-forwarding rule directing incoming traffic to the host. The exact screens and labels vary by router and operating system.

  1. Give the server computer a stable local address, preferably through a router address reservation.
  2. Permit the server process through the host firewall only for the network exposure you intend.
  3. Create the router forwarding rule for the server’s listening port and point it to the reserved local address.
  4. Have a friend outside your network test the connection while you watch the server console.
  5. Remove or restrict the forwarding rule if you stop hosting publicly.

The official Minecraft guidance warns that changing home-network settings is not recommended unless the operator understands the implications. A misconfigured rule can expose more than the game service, and an address change can silently break forwarding. Do not publish your home address or give players operating-system credentials.

Managed hosting

A managed host can remove much of the local firewall, router, and maintenance work, but it does not remove the need to manage versions and plugins. Compare providers on the following points before moving a world:

Decision axis Questions to ask
Java and version support Can you select the Java runtime, Minecraft version, and Paper build required by your FactionsUUID release?
Backups Are world and configuration backups automatic, retained for a useful period, and restorable without opening a ticket?
Plugin management Can you upload compatible JARs, inspect logs, edit generated configuration, and roll back safely?
Networking and security What firewall, DDoS, isolation, and access-control measures are included?
Resources and capacity What CPU, memory, storage, and player limits apply, and are they clearly documented?
Support Can support help with a failed startup or only with the hosting panel itself?

No universal hardware or player-capacity number is established here. Actual capacity depends on the world, view and simulation settings, plugins, player behavior, and the host’s underlying resources. Monitor the console and server behavior rather than selecting a capacity from a generic benchmark.

Secure and operate the server

  • Protect operator access: use strong, unique credentials and grant operator status only to people who need it.
  • Update deliberately: keep Minecraft, Paper, FactionsUUID, and supporting plugins current, but read release notes and test upgrades on a copy first.
  • Back up routinely: include the world, server.properties, plugin configuration, permissions, economy data, and any map or protection data.
  • Verify restores: a backup is useful only if you can restore it. Practice with a separate test directory and never overwrite the live world during the exercise.
  • Limit network exposure: forward only the game service, keep administration interfaces private, and remove temporary firewall rules after testing.
  • Watch logs: dependency failures, invalid settings, rejected commands, and repeated errors usually appear in the console before players report them.

Test the player experience before launch

Use at least one operator account and one ordinary player account. Test the complete loop rather than only checking that the server reaches a ready state:

  1. Create a test faction and set its name and description.
  2. Invite a second account, promote it, and remove or demote it to verify role permissions.
  3. Claim land, build inside it, unclaim it, and confirm the expected power and claim behavior.
  4. Attempt to build, break, open containers, and fight as a non-member inside a protected claim.
  5. Create or designate safezone and warzone areas and verify their rules.
  6. Test ally, truce, and enemy relationships, including the combat and access effects your rules promise.
  7. Send messages through faction chat and public chat, with any alternate chat integration enabled.
  8. Connect from outside the local network and confirm that firewall and forwarding rules work without exposing administrative services.
  9. Run a backup and perform a test restore before advertising the server.
  10. Review the console for dependency or version errors while all tests are running.

Troubleshooting common failures

The server exits immediately

Check that Java is installed and compatible, that you launched the intended JAR from the correct directory, and that eula.txt contains eula=true. Read the first error in the console rather than the final shutdown message.

FactionsUUID does not load

Confirm that the JAR is directly inside plugins, not in a nested folder. Then compare its required Minecraft version with the running server and check the console for missing dependencies. FactionsUUID 4.3.0, for example, requires Minecraft 1.21.10 and will not run on an older release.

Players cannot connect

First test from the host computer, then from the same local network, and finally from an external network. This separates a server-start problem from a firewall or router-forwarding problem. Recheck the host’s local address if the router assigned a new one.

Claims or safezones behave unexpectedly

Review the generated FactionsUUID configuration and test with a non-operator account. Check faction power, claim ownership, the special-area designation, and overlapping protection or permissions plugins. Remove one integration temporarily if you need to identify which plugin is overriding the behavior.

Chat is duplicated or incorrectly formatted

Determine which plugin owns chat formatting and routing. If you use another chat plugin, disable FactionsUUID’s built-in Paper chat integration as documented for that setup, then restart and test faction and public channels separately.

An upgrade breaks the world or configuration

Stop the server, restore the pre-upgrade world and configuration backup, and reproduce the upgrade on a copy. Read the release notes for configuration renames and upgrade behavior before trying again. Never test an uncertain migration on the only copy of a live world.

Launch checklist

  • Java Edition clients and a compatible Java runtime are confirmed.
  • Paper matches the selected Minecraft version.
  • FactionsUUID and every supporting plugin declare support for that version.
  • The EULA is accepted and server.properties has been reviewed.
  • Claims, power, safezone, warzone, diplomacy, permissions, economy, and chat rules have been tested.
  • Backups include world and configuration data, and a restore has succeeded.
  • Firewall and port forwarding expose only the intended service.
  • A non-operator account passes the player tests.
  • The console is free of unresolved dependency and version errors.
