To host FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.18 for Minecraft 1.18.2, install Java 17, install the exact Forge build required by the pack, copy the pack’s server-compatible files into the Forge server directory, accept Minecraft’s EULA, set an appropriate heap size, and start the generated Forge script. The pack is listed by Feed the Beast as pack ID 95, running on Minecraft 1.18.2. Its listing requires Java 17 and lists 4 GB RAM as the minimum, with 6 GB recommended.
What you need before starting
Prepare the following before creating the server:

You also need administrator access to install Java and open the server’s files. Every player must use the same Direwolf20 pack version, Minecraft version and Forge build as the server.
Choose the correct Direwolf20 files
A normal client installation is not automatically a complete dedicated-server installation. Before copying anything, identify the exact pack version you intend to run and locate its manifest or version page. The manifest should establish the Minecraft version, Forge dependency and mod versions. Keep that information with the server files so you can reproduce the installation later.
The official Feed the Beast self-hosting instructions currently describe a newer 1.21 NeoForge pack, not this 1.18.2 release. Do not transfer that newer guide’s memory settings or directory assumptions to Direwolf20 1.18.2. Use the 1.18.2 pack’s own manifest and server files instead.

If a download is labelled as a client pack, install it in a temporary client profile first. That gives you a complete reference copy of the mods and configuration, but you still need to remove client-only components before launching a dedicated server.
Install and verify Java 17
- Install a Java 17 JDK or JRE for your operating system. Use a 64-bit build on a 64-bit operating system.
- Open a new Command Prompt, PowerShell window or terminal after installation.
- Run
java -version. The output must identify Java 17. If it reports Java 8, Java 16 or another release, the server may fail before Forge starts. - If several Java installations are present, use the full path to the Java 17 executable in your launch script rather than relying on the system-wide default.
Java 17 is a runtime requirement, not an optional upgrade. Installing Java 17 while leaving a script pointed at an older executable does not solve the problem; the script must actually invoke the Java 17 binary.

The Forge build is the most important version detail to verify before installation. A dated third-party listing shows Forge 1.18.2 build 40.1.0 as Recommended and 40.1.84 as Latest. An unofficial changelog copy mentions 40.2.0 as “Recommended Build 2,” but that entry is low confidence. Those numbers demonstrate that several builds exist; they do not prove which one the current Direwolf20 pack expects.
Use this decision process:
- Open the pack’s manifest or the current Feed the Beast or CurseForge version list.
- Record the exact Forge dependency attached to the Direwolf20 1.18.2 release you selected.
- Download the installer for that build and keep its filename unchanged until installation is complete.
- If the pack page and manifest disagree, follow the manifest for that specific pack version and do not mix mods from a different release.
Choosing a different Forge build can produce missing-mod errors, registry mismatches or a server that starts but cannot accept clients. Treat the build shown in the pack metadata as authoritative for that release.

Create the server folder and install Forge
Create a new directory used only by this server. A short path such as C:MinecraftDirewolf20-1.18.2 on Windows or ~/minecraft/direwolf20-1.18.2 on Linux makes scripts and backups easier to manage. Do not run the server from the directory where your browser saves downloads.
- Download the Forge 1.18.2 installer matching the pack metadata and place it in the new server directory.
- Open a terminal in that directory.
- Run the installer in server mode:
java -jar forge-<version>-installer.jar --installServer. Replace<version>with the exact filename; do not type the angle brackets literally. - Wait for the installer to download Forge libraries and create the server files. Forge 1.17 and newer normally generate a platform-specific launch script and a JVM-arguments file.
- Inspect the directory. You should see the generated run script, Forge libraries and a file used for user JVM arguments. The exact filenames can vary slightly by Forge installer revision.
If the command says that Java is not recognized, fix the Java installation or use the full path to Java 17, for example "C:PathToJava17binjava.exe" -jar forge-<version>-installer.jar --installServer. If the installer reports an incompatible Java version, return to the verification step instead of forcing it to run.
Populate the directory with the Direwolf20 pack
Use the pack’s server distribution when one is provided. If no official server bundle is available for your selected release, use the client installation as a reference and copy the server-relevant content carefully.
- Copy the pack’s
modsdirectory into the Forge server directory. - Copy the pack’s
configdirectory. - Copy additional data directories included by that release, such as
defaultconfigs,kubejsorscripts, when they exist. - Preserve the directory structure and filenames. Do not merge files from two different Direwolf20 versions.
- Review the
modsdirectory and remove client-only mods. Typical examples include minimaps, shader loaders, HUD or menu enhancements, zoom utilities, and visual or sound-effect mods that explicitly state they are client-side. - Keep gameplay, world-generation, library and server-required mods. If a mod’s page does not clearly identify it as client-only, check the pack manifest or its Forge metadata before deleting it.
The exact folder list is pack-version dependent. A missing kubejs or scripts directory is not an error if that release does not contain one; copying an unrelated directory from another pack is more dangerous than leaving a non-existent optional directory absent.

Perform the first launch and accept the EULA
- Run the generated Forge script from the server directory. On Windows this is usually a
.batfile; on Linux or macOS it is usually a shell script. - Allow the first run to stop. Minecraft normally creates
eula.txtand other initial files before refusing to continue. - Open
eula.txt, read the linked Minecraft EULA, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to it. - Save the file and run the same generated script again.
Do not launch the vanilla server jar as a substitute for the Forge script. A vanilla process will not load the Direwolf20 mods, and clients using the modpack will fail to negotiate the required mod list.
Set memory in the JVM arguments file
Forge’s generated setup includes a JVM-arguments file so memory can be changed without rewriting the launcher. Open that file and set the initial and maximum heap values appropriate for the machine. A commonly shown example is -Xms8G -Xmx8G; use it only when the computer can spare that allocation while still running the operating system and any other services.

For this pack, stay within the Feed the Beast guidance in the requirements table: the server must have at least the listed minimum available, and the listed recommended amount is a sensible target for a small group. Giving Minecraft every gigabyte in the machine can make the host less stable and does not automatically improve performance.
After saving the JVM arguments file, start the generated script again. Watch the console for Forge’s loading messages and for a line indicating that the server has finished preparing the world. The first startup can take substantially longer because libraries, registries and world data are created.

Fix the Windows Java and script-path problem
A reported Direwolf20 1.18 server failure occurred because the bundled start script referenced jre/jdk-17.0.2+8-jre, a directory that was not present after setup. The same report involved a computer that had only Java 8 installed. A follow-up fix changed the script to point at the actual minecraft_server.1.18.2.jar file and a valid Java installation.
If Windows closes the window immediately or reports that a file cannot be found:

- Right-click the script and choose to edit it; do not double-click repeatedly while troubleshooting.
- Check every Java path in the script. Replace a bundled or obsolete path with the full path to a real Java 17 executable.
- Check that the jar filename referenced by the script exists in the server directory. If the script expects
minecraft_server.1.18.2.jarbut the file has another name, correct the reference or regenerate the Forge installation. - Run the script from an open Command Prompt so the error remains visible.
- After correcting the path, use the generated Forge launcher rather than bypassing Forge with a vanilla command.
Do not “solve” a missing Java 17 path by pointing the script at Java 8. That can move the failure later in startup while leaving the version mismatch unresolved.

- The pack release and mod versions
- The Forge build selected for that release
- Configuration files that affect registries or world generation
A client with an extra gameplay mod, an older Forge build or a different pack revision can be rejected even when its Minecraft version appears correct. When diagnosing a disconnect, compare the client’s mod list and Forge version with the server’s files before changing server settings.
For a local network, players connect using the host computer’s local address. For remote players, the host must make the server reachable through its firewall and network configuration, subject to the host’s router and internet-service restrictions. Keep the server process running and give players the address appropriate to their network; do not publish an internal address to people outside the LAN.

Use a managed host instead of self-hosting
Some Minecraft hosting providers advertise one-click or preinstalled Direwolf20 1.18 packages. This avoids Java installation, Forge setup and router configuration, but you still need to verify the exact Minecraft, Forge and modpack versions before creating the world. A host’s claim that it offers the “latest tested” release is marketing language, not proof that it matches your players’ files.
Ask the provider which Direwolf20 1.18 build is installed, whether you can upload a matching server pack, how backups are made, and whether you can change the Java runtime to Java 17. If the control panel installs a different release from the one your group uses, a manual upload or another host may be necessary.
Back up and maintain the server
- Stop the server cleanly before copying the world. A live copy can miss region or player-data changes.
- Back up the world,
config,mods,defaultconfigs,kubejsandscriptsdirectories when present. - Keep at least one backup from before every Forge, modpack or configuration change.
- Record the pack release, Forge build, Java version and JVM arguments in a text file beside the server.
- Test a backup on a separate copy before deleting older backups.
- Do not update individual mods casually. Modpacks are versioned collections; changing one dependency can invalidate a world or prevent clients from joining.
- Restrict operating-system permissions on the server directory and avoid running unrelated downloads or scripts from it.
Final launch checklist
- The directory contains the Direwolf20 1.18.2 files for one consistent pack release.
java -versionreports Java 17, and the launcher uses that same executable.- The Forge installer build matches the pack manifest or official version listing.
- The generated Forge script, not a vanilla jar, is used to launch the process.
- The server’s
modsdirectory contains required gameplay and library mods but no known client-only additions. eula.txtcontainseula=trueonly after you have accepted the EULA.- The JVM arguments provide the pack’s required memory without exhausting the host machine.
- Each player has the same Minecraft, Forge, pack and mod versions.
- A backup exists before the first shared-world session and before future updates.
Once those checks pass, start the generated Forge script, wait for the world to finish loading, and have players connect with the matching Direwolf20 1.18.2 client profile.
