The right method depends on your Debian desktop environment. GNOME normally displays one selected image, so a rotating wallpaper requires the GNOME Shell Extensions catalog’s Wallpaper Slideshow extension. Cinnamon exposes slideshow controls in its background settings. Evidence for XFCE in current Debian sources describes a screensaver slideshow, not rotating desktop wallpaper, while KDE Plasma steps vary by release and should be checked against the documentation for your installed version.
First identify your desktop environment
Debian can run several desktop environments, and wallpaper controls belong to the desktop rather than Debian itself. Before changing anything, identify the session you are using. The names and panels below apply to GNOME and Cinnamon; do not assume that a GNOME extension or Cinnamon setting exists in another desktop.
- GNOME: The standard Appearance panel lets you select one of the supplied images or add a personal photo. Those controls do not describe an automatic rotating slideshow.
- Cinnamon: Debian Bookworm’s Cinnamon settings schema includes slideshow enablement, an image source, a delay, and random ordering.
- XFCE: Debian Trixie source includes a hidden screensaver entry called Slideshow that displays images from Pictures. That is a screensaver feature, not proof of desktop-wallpaper rotation.
- KDE Plasma or another desktop: Use documentation matching the exact Debian release and desktop version before following click-by-click instructions. The available evidence does not establish current authoritative Plasma wallpaper steps.
If you are unsure, open your desktop’s settings and look for its About, System Information, or desktop-environment entry. The same Debian installation can behave differently when you log into a different session.

Prepare the image collection
For the GNOME extension workflow, a local directory of image files is sufficient. You do not need a special monitor, external drive, wallpaper pack, or other hardware. Create or choose a folder that contains the photographs or artwork you want to rotate through.

- Use ordinary image files that your desktop already displays correctly as a static background.
- Remember the directory location; you will select it in the slideshow settings.
The GNOME catalog listing says its extension can detect directory changes. That means adding or removing files in the selected folder can be reflected by the extension, subject to the behavior of the version installed on your system.
GNOME: use the Wallpaper Slideshow extension
GNOME’s built-in Appearance panel is for choosing a static image. To rotate images automatically, install and configure the GNOME Shell Extensions catalog entry named Wallpaper Slideshow.
1. Check compatibility before installing
Open the GNOME Extensions catalog and search for Wallpaper Slideshow. The catalog entry for version 14.3 listed support for GNOME Shell versions 45 through 51 when checked. Extension compatibility changes as GNOME evolves, so compare the listing’s supported Shell versions with the version installed on your Debian system before enabling it.
If your Shell version is outside the range shown by the current listing, do not assume that the extension will work. Look for a release explicitly marked for your Shell version or wait for a compatible update.

2. Install and enable the extension
- Open the GNOME Extensions catalog or its desktop integration tool.
- Search for Wallpaper Slideshow and open the matching listing.
- Verify the supported GNOME Shell versions shown for the current extension release.
- Install the extension and switch it on when GNOME asks for confirmation.
The exact installation prompt can differ between Debian releases and between the web catalog and a desktop extension manager. The important check is that the extension is enabled in the GNOME session in which you want the slideshow.
3. Select your folder and rotation behavior
- Open the extension’s preferences from the extension manager or its catalog entry.
- Choose the local directory containing your wallpapers.
- Select the sorting method offered by your installed version.
- Set the interval offered by the preferences. This controls how long each image remains before the next change.
- Save or close the preferences, then use the extension’s controls from the desktop context menu or GNOME quick settings when you need to manage the slideshow.
The catalog description confirms directory selection, sorting, interval control, directory-change detection, and access through the desktop context menu or quick settings. Labels and the precise placement of each control can change with the extension release, so follow the wording displayed by the version you installed.
4. Confirm that it is working
Leave the session running until the interval elapses. The background should change to another image from the selected directory. If you add a new file, allow time for the extension to detect the directory change; behavior can depend on the installed release.
Cinnamon: configure its built-in slideshow settings
Debian Bookworm’s Cinnamon schema exposes native slideshow settings. It records four relevant controls: whether slideshow mode is enabled, the image source, the delay, and random ordering. This is a desktop setting rather than a GNOME extension.

Open the background or wallpaper settings
Open Cinnamon’s desktop background settings and look for its slideshow controls. Debian’s schema establishes that these controls exist, but it does not establish one universal menu path or exact label for every Cinnamon build. If your panel uses different wording, look for the settings corresponding to the schema fields below.
Set the slideshow options
- Enable slideshow mode.
- Choose the directory or image source that contains your wallpapers.
- Set the delay using the unit and range shown by your Cinnamon settings panel.
- Enable random ordering if you want Cinnamon to select images in a non-sequential order; leave it disabled when you want the source’s ordering behavior.
Apply the settings and leave the desktop visible long enough for the selected delay to pass. Cinnamon’s schema proves that these values are available; the exact graphical controls can differ between Debian and Cinnamon versions.
XFCE: do not confuse a screensaver slideshow with wallpaper rotation
Debian Trixie’s xfce4-screensaver source contains a hidden XFCE screensaver entry named Slideshow. It displays images from the Pictures directory while the screensaver is active. That evidence does not establish an XFCE feature that changes the desktop wallpaper during normal use.

KDE Plasma and other desktops
Wallpaper rotation is version-sensitive in KDE Plasma, and the available material does not provide current authoritative Plasma instructions. Check the wallpaper settings and documentation shipped for the KDE Plasma version in your Debian release rather than applying GNOME or Cinnamon directions. The same caution applies to any desktop not listed above.
Per-user slideshow versus a system-wide GNOME background
A personal slideshow and an administrator-managed default are different jobs. The GNOME administration procedure based on system-wide dconf configures a fixed image URI for users. It is not a recipe for rotating wallpapers.
What the system-wide dconf method does
- Sets a fixed background image URI for the system or a managed user profile.
- Can lock the relevant settings so users cannot change them.
- Uses a dconf profile and database configuration maintained by the administrator.
- Requires
dconf update, followed by user logout and login, before the system-wide settings take effect.
Use this route when an organization needs a consistent, non-rotating background. For an individual account that wants changing images, use the desktop’s slideshow facility instead. Do not substitute a rotating folder for the fixed URI expected by the administrative configuration.

Troubleshooting
The GNOME extension does not appear or will not enable
Check the extension listing’s supported GNOME Shell versions against your installed Shell version. The catalog entry for version 14.3 listed Shell 45–51 at the time it was checked; a later catalog entry may use a different range. An incompatible extension release is the first issue to rule out.

The wallpaper remains static in GNOME
Confirm that the extension is enabled, that its preferences point to the intended local directory, and that an interval has been set. GNOME’s standard Appearance panel alone selects a single image and does not provide the rotation described here.
New files are missing from the GNOME rotation
Make sure the files were added to the directory selected in the extension preferences. The catalog says the extension detects directory changes, but detection timing depends on the installed release. Reopen the extension preferences or restart the GNOME session only after confirming the directory path.
Cinnamon changes images in an unexpected order
Review the random-order control. When random ordering is enabled, the sequence will not follow the source’s normal ordering; disable it when a predictable order is required. Also verify the selected delay and image source in Cinnamon’s background settings.

The administrative dconf procedure requires dconf update and a user logout/login. It configures a fixed image, so it will not create a slideshow even when the update succeeds.
