You can design a polished itinerary that has the visual order of an airline document, but appearance does not create a reservation, ticket, boarding pass, or proof of travel. Build it as an explicitly labelled sample: put SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING at the top, show the passenger, route, dates, times, airline and segments in a clear hierarchy, and omit anything that could be mistaken for a live credential.
If a visa office, border authority or carrier requires evidence of travel, use the genuine document type it requests and check that authority’s current rules. A designed PDF is suitable for planning, presentation, comparison, training or a private example—not for boarding or proving that a flight was purchased.
Start with the status: a mockup is not a ticket
The first design decision is not the font or color. It is the document’s status. A custom itinerary is a graphic representation of a proposed or fictional trip. It can help someone understand timing, compare routes, brief a colleague or illustrate a travel workflow. It does not place a booking in an airline system.
A sample-itinerary publisher states that its sample documents are not confirmed airline bookings and are not valid documents for visa applications, border entry or airline check-in. Its acceptable-use policy is available at My Flight Itinerary’s acceptable-use page. Treat that as a practical boundary for any mockup: make the illustrative purpose obvious instead of relying on a disclaimer hidden in fine print.

Use a real reservation or purchased ticket only when the receiving authority accepts that document for the specific purpose. “Reservation,” “ticket” and “boarding” describe different stages:
- Reservation: space or an itinerary may be held in a booking system, sometimes without payment. It may expire or be cancelled.
- Ticket: transportation has been issued under fare and payment conditions. It still may have restrictions, change rules or refund limits.
- Boarding pass: a carrier-issued document for a particular flight and passenger after the carrier’s check-in requirements are met.
A reservation provider describes its unticketed PDF as not being a flight ticket and says it cannot be used to board. That distinction is explained on ValidFlight’s service page. Do not let a ticket-shaped layout blur these states.
Decide what the document is for before opening an editor
Planning, design or training
A mockup works well when the reader needs a readable route summary, a presentation visual, a classroom exercise, an internal travel plan or a fictional example. You can use invented passenger details and route data, provided every invented value is marked as fictional or illustrative. Redact personal information when adapting a real trip for a public demo.

Do not assume that a visually convincing PDF satisfies an immigration checklist. UK Home Office guidance says, Submitting or presenting any of the documents listed below does not guarantee that your application for a visit visa or entry at the border will be successful.
Read the complete, jurisdiction-specific guidance at GOV.UK’s guide to supporting documents for visiting the UK. The page also says visitors must be able to pay for a return or onward journey and gives a transit example requiring a confirmed outward journey within 48 hours of arrival. Those are UK examples, not a universal rule for every country.
Airline travel
If the goal is to fly, obtain the carrier’s genuine reservation, ticket and check-in documents through an authorised channel. A mockup cannot create a ticket number in the carrier’s system, assign a seat or satisfy a gate agent’s verification. Ask the airline or relevant authority which document and validity period it accepts before paying for anything.
Fields to include in a safe, ticket-like layout
There is no single official universal ticket design. The following fields are a design checklist inferred from itinerary descriptions that commonly contain a passenger, route, dates and airline information; it is not an airline specification.

Passenger block
- Passenger name, using fictional data for a demonstration or redacting a real name in a public example.
- An optional purpose line such as Illustrative itinerary for planning.
- A prominent status label: SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING.
Route summary
- Origin and destination city names.
- Airport names and codes when they are known and relevant.
- Travel date and local departure and arrival times, with a note that times are local.
- Airline and flight number only when the details are real and relevant. If invented, identify them as fictional.
Segment details
Give each flight its own row or card. Show the departure airport and time on the left, the arrival airport and time on the right, and the date beside each time. Put connection airports between cards and number the segments so the order cannot be misunderstood. For an overnight flight, show the calendar date at both ends rather than relying on the reader to infer a date change.
Status note
Include a short sentence such as Illustrative itinerary; no reservation created.
If a real reservation exists elsewhere, do not imply that this graphic is the reservation record. Link or refer to the genuine source only in a private workflow, not by inventing a booking code in the mockup.
Fields to leave out
- Booking references, ticket numbers or confirmation codes that look live.
- Barcodes, QR codes and machine-readable strips.
- Seat assignments, boarding groups or check-in status.
- An airline logo, proprietary mark or copied ticket template unless you are authorised to use it and the information is true.
- Payment details, passport numbers and other sensitive identifiers.
If a demonstration needs a field-shaped space, label it FICTIONAL — NONFUNCTIONAL inside the field. A blank that resembles a real credential is safer to remove than to populate with a plausible code.
Build the page in a clear hierarchy
1. Choose the canvas
Use a plain, high-contrast page sized for its destination: A4 or Letter for printing, or a similarly proportioned screen canvas for a presentation. Leave margins around the content so the warning and route remain visible when the file is printed or viewed on a phone. The layout should still be legible at normal viewing size.
2. Add the warning before styling
Place the status label at the very top, above any decorative header. Use a solid contrasting band, all-caps text and enough padding that it cannot be cropped accidentally. Repeat a smaller Illustrative only marker in the footer if the page may be separated from an accompanying explanation. Do not make the warning transparent, pale or hidden behind a watermark.

3. Create the trip header
Under the warning, add a concise trip title such as Illustrative London–Istanbul itinerary. Put the passenger name and travel date range in a compact metadata row. A two-column header—passenger on one side, route and dates on the other—helps a reader identify the document without scanning the whole page.

- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
4. Make the route the visual focal point
Use large city names for origin and destination, smaller airport labels beneath them and a restrained arrow or line between them. Show the number of segments and total connection points only when you can calculate them consistently. Do not use a progress bar that could be mistaken for a live check-in indicator.
5. Add one card per segment
Each card should contain the segment number, fictional or real airline name, flight number if applicable, departure and arrival airports, local dates and times, and a connection note. Align corresponding labels so the eye can compare cards quickly. Keep the same order on every card; for example, date, time, airport, then city.
6. Add the status note and fictional-data labels
Place Illustrative itinerary; no reservation created
immediately below the segment list. If any value is invented, append fictional or example only beside it. A reader should not have to inspect metadata or file properties to discover that the document is a mockup.
7. Export a shareable copy
Export to PDF when you need a fixed layout for a presentation or planning email. Keep the editable source file separately so you can correct a date or airport without creating conflicting versions. Exporting to PDF changes the format, not the status: it remains a mockup.
Use restrained visual cues instead of copying a carrier
Typography
Choose one readable sans-serif family for labels and body text, with a heavier weight for city names and section headers. Use a consistent type scale rather than decorative lettering. Make the warning label larger or bolder than any brand-like heading so its meaning wins at a glance.
Color and contrast
A dark text color on a white or very light background is dependable on screens and printers. One accent color can separate headers from details, but avoid reproducing a known airline’s exact palette. Check contrast after converting to PDF and when viewing the page on a small screen.

Spacing and dividers
Use generous padding inside cards, a consistent gap between segments and thin rules between unrelated fields. Avoid dense blocks of tiny text; a real-looking document is useful only if its route can be scanned in seconds. Keep the warning clear even when the page is printed in grayscale.

Logos and marks
A generic text label such as Example Air (fictional) is safer than copying a carrier logo. If a legitimate design exercise requires a real mark, obtain permission and keep the surrounding data accurate. Never use a logo to suggest that the carrier issued the sample.
Worked example: a fictional, nonfunctional itinerary
The following content demonstrates hierarchy without creating a credential. Every operational value is fictional; the airport names are used only to show how a route can be arranged.
| Field | Illustrative value |
|---|---|
| Status | SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING |
| Passenger | Avery Morgan (fictional example) |
| Trip | London to Istanbul, illustrative itinerary |
| Segment 1 | Example Air EX123 (fictional) · London Heathrow (LHR) to Istanbul Airport (IST) · 14 May 2027, 10:20–16:05 local time |
| Connection | Istanbul, connection shown for layout purposes only |
| Segment 2 | Example Air EX456 (fictional) · Istanbul Airport (IST) to Athens (ATH) · 18 May 2027, 09:15–10:35 local time |
| Status note | Illustrative itinerary; no reservation created. All carrier and flight values are fictional and nonfunctional. |
Notice what the example does not contain: no booking reference, ticket number, barcode, QR code, seat, fare, payment record or claim that an airline issued it. Those omissions are deliberate. If you replace a fictional value with a real one, verify the date, airport, time zone and segment order, and keep the mockup label.
Understand the document types before comparing options
| Document | What it represents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Custom mockup or sample itinerary | A designed representation for planning, comparison, sharing, training or design work, as described by a sample publisher. | It is not itself a confirmed booking or valid travel evidence. See the publisher’s acceptable-use policy. |
| Unticketed reservation | A reservation provider says its service creates a reservation held in an airline system and supplies a PDF. | The cited provider says it is not a ticket and cannot be used to board; validity can expire. See the provider’s description. |
| Provider-verifiable itinerary | Onward Itinerary says its reference is issued by that provider and can be checked through its QR portal. | The provider says the reference does not appear in the airline’s own Manage Booking or check-in pages. Acceptance is for the relevant consulate to decide. See its explanation of how verification works. |
| Purchased airline ticket | A ticket issued under a carrier’s fare and purchase terms. | It does not have one universal set of change, refund or hold rules; restrictions depend on the fare and booking channel. |
When a real option is relevant, compare what the document represents, who issued its reference, where that reference can be checked, how long it remains valid, whether it is ticketed and usable for boarding, and whether the receiving authority accepts it for your purpose. A polished appearance answers none of those questions by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck jurisdiction and fare rules instead of assuming a universal policy
Visa and transit requirements
Read the current checklist for the country, visa category and transit route. UK guidance is explicit that submitting documents does not guarantee a visa or entry decision. It also discusses the ability to pay for a return or onward journey and a particular transit situation involving confirmation within 48 hours of arrival. A different country, airport or visa class may ask for different evidence, so do not turn that example into a global deadline.

Airline booking rules
The U.S. Department of Transportation explains that fare classes can carry different restrictions in its Buying a Ticket guidance. For qualifying airline bookings made at least seven days before scheduled departure, an airline must either allow cancellation within 24 hours for a full refund or allow a reservation hold at the quoted price for 24 hours. The airline does not have to offer both choices, and the requirement does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies or other agents. Therefore, never label a mockup as a “24-hour hold” or promise a refund based only on its appearance.
Provider-specific validity
Validity periods advertised by a reservation provider are that provider’s service terms, not universal airline rules. ValidFlight describes a standard unpaid reservation as being released after 48–72 hours and says it cannot be used to board. Onward Itinerary describes a provider-issued reference verified through its own QR portal rather than the airline’s booking pages, and says each consulate decides whether it will accept the document. If you need one of these services, read its current terms and the receiving authority’s checklist; do not convert a provider claim into a guarantee.
Quality-control checklist before you share the PDF
- The first line visibly says SAMPLE / MOCKUP — NOT A TICKET OR BOOKING.
- The passenger name is fictional, redacted or used with permission.
- Origin, destination, airport names and airport codes agree with one another.
- Every departure and arrival time is identified as local and has the correct date.
- Segments are numbered in travel order, with connections clearly separated.
- Airline and flight details are either accurate and relevant or labelled fictional.
- No booking reference, ticket number, barcode, QR code, seat or boarding status appears.
- There is no copied carrier logo or design that implies issuance.
- The status note says that no reservation was created, when that is true.
- The PDF remains readable on a phone, in print and in grayscale.
- The filename does not imply a real confirmation; use a name such as
illustrative-itinerary-mockup.pdf. - The editable source is stored separately from the copy sent to others.
Troubleshoot common mistakes
The page looks authentic but readers still think it is real
Increase the warning label’s size and contrast, move it above the title and remove realistic credential fields. Replace a carrier-like logo with plain text identifying a fictional airline. Add the status note directly below the route instead of burying it in a footer.
The itinerary is hard to scan
Reduce decorative elements, give each segment its own card and align departure and arrival columns. Put dates beside times, not in a distant legend. If the route spans multiple days, show the date on every segment.
A visa office asks for a reservation
Stop editing the mockup. Ask the consulate or immigration authority what it means by reservation, whether an unticketed hold is acceptable, how long it must remain valid and where the reference must be verifiable. Follow that written checklist and submit the genuine document type requested.
A traveller wants to use the PDF at check-in
Explain that a PDF mockup cannot be scanned or validated as a ticket. Direct the traveller to the airline or authorised booking channel for a real reservation, ticket and boarding pass. Do not add a barcode or code to make the mockup appear scannable.
A date or airport changed after export
Correct the editable source, regenerate the PDF and replace the old copy. Keep only one clearly dated version in the shared folder. Never patch a PDF by overlaying a new date while leaving an inconsistent segment or filename behind.
Final decision: design the appearance, never counterfeit the status
The safest custom itinerary combines airline-like organization with unmistakable disclosure. Put the mockup warning first, show only the route information a reader needs, label fictional values, and leave out every credential-like element. Then match the document to its real purpose: a mockup for communication, or a genuine reservation or ticket when an airline, consulate or border authority requires evidence. Visual polish improves comprehension; it cannot confer booking rights or guarantee acceptance.
