To make a sound that plays on your iPhone, create and export a ringtone in GarageBand. To record what callers hear when they reach voicemail, use the greeting controls in the Phone app—if your carrier and region support custom greetings. These are separate features with different steps.

If you are deciding which one you need, start with the destination: a ringtone plays from your phone for incoming calls or alerts; a voicemail greeting is heard by callers who reach your voicemail. GarageBand handles the first. The Phone app handles the second when the feature is available on your service.

Ringtone or voicemail greeting: which one do you need?

A ringtone is a sound your iPhone plays for an incoming call or alert. A voicemail greeting is a recording callers hear after they reach your voicemail. Making a ringtone will not change your voicemail greeting, and recording a greeting will not change the sound your iPhone plays.

Apple’s GarageBand instructions cover creating a ringtone from an audio file, an eligible downloaded song in your Apple Music library, or material you make yourself. Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes recording a custom voicemail greeting where supported.

There is also a third, simpler option if you do not need to make new audio: choose a built-in sound or a sound you have purchased. That changes the selected iPhone ringtone or alert without creating a GarageBand project. Use Contacts instead if only one person should have a distinct ringtone or text tone.

Make a custom ringtone in GarageBand on iPhone

Apple’s documented workflow uses GarageBand on iPhone. If GarageBand is not installed, Apple directs users to download it from the App Store. You can start with a stored audio file or an eligible song from your Apple Music library, or build the sound yourself with GarageBand’s instruments and recording tools.

The overall process is: bring audio into a GarageBand track, choose a section no longer than 30 seconds, place it at the beginning of the timeline, and export the project as a ringtone. After export, you can assign the sound right away or return to the project list without assigning it.

1. Start an Audio Recording project

  1. On the GarageBand Home Screen, touch and hold the GarageBand icon to open its quick-action menu.
  2. Choose Create New Audio Recording. If the Home Screen presents the project choice directly, select Audio Recorder.
  3. Open Tracks view, select a track, and open the Loops Browser.

The Audio Recording project is the starting point for bringing sound into a track and preparing it for export. You do not need to make a new song if you already have a suitable audio file. The key is to reach Tracks view, where you can place and edit the audio region before sharing the project.

If you are creating original audio instead of importing it, GarageBand also lets you record built-in Touch Instruments, add Apple Loops, or record yourself playing or singing. Those are alternative ways to create material for the same ringtone workflow; the project still needs to be edited and exported as a ringtone afterward.

2. Choose an audio source

  1. In the Loops Browser, choose Files to browse an audio file stored on the iPhone or in iCloud.
  2. Choose Music to select a song from your Apple Music library.
  3. Drag the chosen file or song into the Tracks view.

A song selected from Apple Music must be downloaded to the iPhone for this workflow. If it appears dimmed, it may not be downloaded or it may be protected. Apple says protected tracks cannot be used to make a ringtone. Choose another file or eligible track if GarageBand will not let you use the song.

This means that seeing a song in your library does not necessarily mean it can be used in a ringtone project. Check that the track is downloaded and selectable; a dimmed item is a clue that it may not meet the requirements. Apple does not say that every dimmed song has the same cause, so do not assume it is only a download issue or only a protection issue. If the track remains unavailable, use a different eligible audio file or make original material in GarageBand.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

For an audio file, the documented Files option includes material stored on the iPhone or in iCloud. Select the file in the Loops Browser and drag it into Tracks view. The instructions do not require buying a separate ringtone-making product: GarageBand is the creation and export route, while the Tone Store is an optional digital purchase route for people who prefer to select a sound rather than edit their own.

3. Trim the sound and position it

  1. In Tracks view, drag the left or right edge of the audio region to keep the section you want.
  2. Zoom in if you need more precise control over where the selected section starts or ends.
  3. Move the selected region all the way to the left so there is no blank space before the sound begins.

The exported ringtone can be no longer than 30 seconds, according to Apple Support’s GarageBand instructions. Make the region 30 seconds or shorter before export if you want to choose the exact ending yourself. A longer project can still be exported: GarageBand offers to shorten it automatically.

Think about both the duration and the start position as you edit. The 30-second figure is the maximum ringtone length, not a required length; you can keep a shorter section. If there is blank space before the audio region, the exported sound will begin with that gap, so move the region fully to the left. Zooming in is useful when you want to fine-tune the edges of the chosen section rather than trim by a broad gesture.

If you want GarageBand to choose the shortened export, you can let it do so at export time. If you would rather control exactly where the ringtone ends, cancel the export prompt, return to the project, trim the region, and export again. Either way, the finished ringtone must fit the 30-second limit.

4. Export the project as a ringtone

  1. Return to My Songs.
  2. Select the project, then choose Share and Ringtone.
  3. Enter a name for the ringtone and tap Export.
  4. If GarageBand says the ringtone is too long, choose its option to shorten it automatically, or cancel, trim the project, and export again.

When export finishes, GarageBand offers Use sound as. Choose Standard Ringtone, Standard Text Tone, or the option to assign the sound to a contact. Choose Done to return to My Songs without assigning the ringtone at that point.

The export step turns the GarageBand project into a ringtone choice. Naming the sound helps identify it when you are choosing what to use. The assignment choice is separate from trimming and export: you can apply the result immediately as the standard ringtone or text tone, assign it to an individual, or tap Done and leave it unassigned for now.

If you chose Done, the exported sound has not been assigned through that prompt. You can later choose an available sound in Settings or open an individual contact’s edit screen to select a ringtone or text tone. Use Settings when you want to change the general sound choice; use Contacts when the change is for a particular person.

Make original ringtone material

You can create the audio in GarageBand rather than importing it. Apple describes recording built-in Touch Instruments, adding Apple Loops, or recording yourself playing or singing. Once the material is in a project, use the same editing and export workflow: select the section, keep it within the 30-second limit, then share the project as a ringtone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is useful when the sound you want is a short original musical phrase or a recording you make yourself, rather than a section of an existing audio file or eligible song. The same constraints still apply: position the region at the start, make the chosen sound no longer than 30 seconds, and export through Share > Ringtone. The available instructions do not describe a different limit or export route for material created inside GarageBand.

Record a custom voicemail greeting

Use the Phone app for a greeting callers hear when they reach voicemail. The exact route depends on the Phone app layout shown on your iPhone:

  • Unified layout: Open Phone, tap Calls, tap Edit, then tap Edit Voicemail Greeting.
  • Classic layout: Open Phone, tap Voicemail, then tap Greeting.

In the greeting controls, tap Custom, then Record, and follow the on-screen controls to make the greeting. Apple’s iPhone User Guide notes that custom greeting recording is not supported by all carriers or in all countries and regions. The voicemail setup guide also says voicemail features, including Visual Voicemail and Live Voicemail, are available from select carriers in select countries or regions.

Choose the path that matches the layout you see rather than trying to follow both. In either case, the destination is the voicemail greeting screen; Custom and Record are the controls for recording a greeting, not for creating a ringtone. Once you reach that screen, use the Phone app’s on-screen recording controls. This is a carrier- and region-dependent feature, unlike creating a ringtone in GarageBand.

If Custom or the greeting controls are missing

First check that you are in the Phone app’s voicemail greeting controls, using the route for the layout displayed on your iPhone. If Custom is still unavailable, carrier or regional support may be the reason. Apple’s documentation does not establish why the option is missing on any particular line; availability depends on the carrier and location. Contact your carrier to ask whether custom voicemail greetings are supported for your service and region.

It is also important not to treat the availability of one voicemail feature as proof that every other voicemail feature is available. Apple says Voicemail, Visual Voicemail, and Live Voicemail are provided by select carriers in select countries or regions, and separately warns that custom greeting recording is not supported everywhere. If the expected control is absent, the Apple instructions do not identify a universal setting that will make it appear. Confirm support with the carrier for your specific service and location.

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk., Etc.

Apple’s documentation does not identify a particular carrier, country, or region for an individual reader, so there is no reliable way to infer the reason for a missing option without those details. If the carrier confirms that custom greeting recording is supported, follow the Phone app route for your layout and check its voicemail greeting controls again. If it is not supported, use the voicemail options made available for your service.

Set a built-in or purchased sound instead

If you do not need to create audio, choose an available sound in Settings. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics, tap the sound category, then select a ringtone or alert tone. This is also the place to change an existing choice rather than exporting another GarageBand project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To give one person a distinct sound, open Contacts, select that person, tap Edit, then choose Ringtone or Text Tone. This assigns a sound to that contact rather than changing the general sound choice.

Apple also documents an optional purchase route at Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtones > Tone Store. Store availability and features vary by country or region.

These routes solve different selection needs. Settings is the general path for choosing the phone’s ringtone or an alert tone from available choices. The contact edit screen is for setting a ringtone or text tone for one person. Tone Store is an optional purchase route, while GarageBand is the route for creating and exporting your own ringtone audio. The GarageBand process does not require an additional physical product; the Store is a digital option, not a necessary accessory for recording or exporting.

Choose the right workflow

  • Use GarageBand when you want a custom sound that plays on your iPhone, including audio you import, an eligible downloaded Apple Music song, or material you create in GarageBand.
  • Use Phone’s voicemail controls when you want to record what callers hear after reaching voicemail. That control may not be available with every carrier or in every country or region.
  • Use Settings or a contact’s edit screen when you want to select a sound already available on the iPhone, without creating a new one.

In practical terms, the GarageBand route offers control over the selected audio section and a ringtone export of up to 30 seconds. Its source has to be usable in the documented workflow: an audio file available through Files, a downloaded and unprotected Apple Music song, or material created in GarageBand. The Phone route records a caller-facing greeting but depends on service availability. The Settings and Contacts routes select an existing available sound and do not create a new recording.

Can I make an iPhone ringtone from an Apple Music song?

You can use a song from your Apple Music library if it is downloaded to the iPhone and is not protected. If the song appears dimmed, it may be protected or not downloaded; Apple says protected tracks cannot be used as ringtones.

How long can a GarageBand ringtone be?

Up to 30 seconds. You can trim the region yourself before export, or let GarageBand offer to shorten a longer project during export.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I record a custom voicemail greeting on iPhone?

In the Phone app, use the path for your layout: Unified layout is Phone > Calls > Edit > Edit Voicemail Greeting; Classic layout is Phone > Voicemail > Greeting. Tap Custom, then Record. The option is not supported by every carrier or in every country or region.

Why is the Custom voicemail greeting option missing?

Carrier or regional support may explain why it is missing, but Apple’s instructions do not determine the reason for a particular line. Confirm with your carrier whether custom greeting recording is supported for your service and region.

Can I assign a custom ringtone to one contact?

Yes. After exporting, choose the contact assignment option under Use sound as. You can also open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit, then choose Ringtone or Text Tone.

Do I have to buy a ringtone to use a custom sound?

No additional physical product is required for the documented GarageBand workflow. GarageBand can export eligible imported or original audio as a ringtone. Tone Store is an optional digital purchase route, and its availability and features vary by country or region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use GarageBand to make and export an iPhone ringtone, keeping it within 30 seconds and using an eligible audio source. Use Phone’s voicemail greeting controls to record what callers hear, but only if the feature is supported by your carrier and region. For an existing sound, choose it in Settings or assign it to an individual contact.
