Create a ticket-shaped keepsake with the recipient’s name, a fictional destination, playful flight details and original Grand Theft Auto-inspired styling. A novelty-pass generator can produce a PNG or PDF quickly; a self-designed file gives you more control; and a custom event-pass printer can provide a more polished physical finish. In every case, label the result as a fictional gift, not a travel document, and avoid implying that Rockstar Games made, licensed or endorsed it.
The workflow below covers planning, design, exporting, home or shop printing, vendor production files, and the copyright boundaries that matter when using a game-inspired theme.
What you are making
A GTA-themed boarding pass is a novelty prop laid out like an airline pass. It can announce a birthday surprise, a gaming-room reveal, a trip-themed party or an imaginary flight to a location that fits the recipient’s sense of humor. The pass may contain passenger and flight-style fields, but none of those fields should represent a real booking or be usable for check-in.

- Original visual treatment: colors, wording and motifs that evoke the game’s crime-and-city atmosphere without copying protected artwork or official marks.
A generator such as MakeMyBoardingPass describes its output as a joke gift or prop, accepts passenger and flight-style information, and exports a PNG or PDF that can be printed at home or at a local copy shop. It also states that the pass is for novelty use rather than real travel. That service is independent of Rockstar Games.
Choose the production route
Decide how much design control and physical finishing you need before entering any text. The three practical routes are compared below.

There is no universal best choice. A generator minimizes work, self-design maximizes creative freedom, and a specialist printer can add production options that are difficult to reproduce at home. Check a printer’s current prices, turnaround, shipping and product choices before ordering; one cited ordering article was modified in 2020, so its details may have changed.

Write the content in a text document first. This prevents the common problem of squeezing a long joke into a tiny field after the layout is finished.

Passenger and occasion
- Use the recipient’s preferred name or a playful alias they will recognize.
- Add the occasion in a field such as “reason for travel” or “mission.”
- Choose a date that has meaning for the gift, rather than presenting it as a real departure.
Invented route details
- Create an airport-style code that is clearly fictional, such as three letters derived from an inside joke.
- Use a destination phrase that signals the theme: a made-up city district, an imaginary safehouse or a humorous “Los Santos-inspired” location.
- Invent the flight number, gate, seat and boarding group. Avoid copying a real airline’s current flight or a real person’s booking data.
Gift message and disclaimer
Reserve a visible line for wording such as Novelty gift — not valid for travel. Keep it readable rather than hiding it in microscopic type. A recipient should understand immediately that the pass is a keepsake.
Make a pass with a novelty generator
The generator route is the fastest when the available layout already resembles the ticket you want. Labels can vary by service, but the sequence described by MakeMyBoardingPass is consistent: enter passenger and flight-style details, choose a design, and export an image or PDF.
- Open the generator and select a template. Pick a layout with enough room for the recipient’s name and your disclaimer. Do not choose a design that imitates a current airline so closely that it could be mistaken for a genuine document.
- Enter the passenger name. Check spelling, capitalization and any accent marks before moving on. A misspelled name is difficult to repair after printing.
- Fill in fictional travel fields. Add your invented origin, destination, date, flight number, gate and seat. Use playful values, but do not enter real reservation numbers or other private travel credentials.
- Add the gift wording. If the template has a notes, purpose or remarks field, place the occasion and “not valid for travel” message there. If it has no suitable field, add the wording later in an editor or on the back.
- Review the preview at full size. Look for clipped letters, crowded fields, low-contrast text and accidental real-world airline names. Confirm that the fictional status is obvious.
- Export both formats when available. Keep the PNG for quick sharing or image printing and the PDF for a copy shop or a vendor that expects a document file. Save the original download with a clear filename so you do not confuse it with a real ticket.
- Print a proof. A normal sheet of inexpensive paper reveals scale and alignment problems before you use better stock. The generator says its files can be printed at home or at a local copy shop; the final result still depends on the equipment and paper you choose.
Design the artwork yourself for more control
Self-design is worthwhile when the generator’s fixed fields cannot express your joke or when you want a pass that looks deliberately fictional. Start with a ticket-shaped canvas in the dimensions required by your chosen printer or by the paper you will cut. Do not assume that one vendor’s physical size is universal.
Build a clear information hierarchy
- Header: place a fictional airline or “city transit” name that you invented. Avoid the names and logos of real carriers.
- Primary route: make the origin and destination the largest data fields after the recipient’s name. A simple “FROM / TO” treatment reads quickly.
- Secondary fields: group date, time, gate, seat and flight number in a compact row. Fictional values are enough; realistic reservation detail is unnecessary.
- Gift panel: give the occasion or inside joke its own area instead of forcing it into a standard airline field.
- Novelty notice: place the non-travel wording where it can be read without magnification.
Use an original visual language
Work from broad influences rather than tracing game assets. A dark charcoal base with saturated red, yellow or electric-blue accents can suggest an urban action-game mood, but the palette itself is your design choice. Add geometric road lines, a skyline you drew yourself, a fictional transit seal or abstract spray-paint shapes. Do not copy character portraits, loading screens, map segments, wordmarks or official logos.

Use two or three typefaces with distinct jobs: one strong face for the recipient’s name, one highly legible face for data, and an optional condensed style for labels. Check the smallest text at the intended print size. Decorative type that looks good on a monitor can become unreadable when reduced.
Create fictional codes that cannot be confused with credentials
Three-letter airport-style codes are a fun detail, but make them obviously invented. A code based on the recipient’s nickname or the gift occasion is safer than one that happens to match a real airport. Likewise, use a made-up flight prefix and avoid QR codes, barcodes or serial numbers that could be scanned or mistaken for a booking identifier.
Prepare a file for printing
Export according to the method you selected. A home printer or local copy shop may accept a PDF or a high-resolution image; a specialist pass printer can impose additional technical rules.
If you are printing at home or at a copy shop
- Export a PDF when the design contains text and simple vector shapes. Keep a PNG backup for services that request an image.
- Open the exported file on another device and inspect every edge. Confirm that no field shifted, substituted a font or lost a symbol.
- Print one proof at the final scale. Measure the printed ticket against your planned envelope or display space before producing several copies.
- Use the printer’s actual margin and borderless settings rather than assuming the page will print to its edge. If the printer cannot print edge to edge, leave a deliberate border or plan to trim it.
- Cut only after the ink is dry. A metal ruler and a sharp craft knife can produce straighter edges than household scissors; use a cutting mat and keep blades away from children.
The available sources do not establish a universal paper weight, finish or home-printer compatibility. If you want to use cardstock or another specialty sheet, verify that your printer supports that stock and feed path first.

If you are using a custom event-pass printer
Obtain the vendor’s current template before finalizing the artwork. RockStar Passes instructs customers to match the selected template, include bleed and submit a PDF in CMYK at 300 DPI. Those are that vendor’s production specifications, not a rule that applies to every printer.
Its template guidance also says: “Any critical text or logos that must remain on the final pass should not extend beyond the green art safe area.” In practical terms, extend a background or full-bleed color to the bleed line, while keeping the recipient’s name, disclaimer and other essential marks inside the safe area. Never place important text on a trim line.
Review the vendor’s choices for pass shape and size, finish, punch style and one- or two-sided printing. Ask what file naming, color profile, proofing and turnaround requirements apply to your order. Keep a copy of the approved proof so you can compare the delivered pieces with what you submitted.

Print and finish the keepsake
Home-print workflow
- Load the selected paper according to your printer’s manual and choose the correct media type in the print dialog.
- Print one copy with scaling set to the document’s actual size. A setting such as “fit to page” can unexpectedly shrink the pass.
- Check color, fine text and the cut border under normal room lighting. If dark areas merge, lighten the background or increase text contrast in the source file.
- Print the final copy or copies, allow them to dry, and trim along the intended outline.
- Store the pass flat until gifting. Place it in an envelope or card that does not suggest an official travel document.
Local copy-shop workflow
- Ask which file formats, page sizes and paper types the shop accepts.
- Send the final PDF or PNG and specify the intended finished size, number of copies and single- or double-sided requirement.
- Request a proof if the shop offers one, especially when the design uses a dark background or small type.
- Inspect the first printed copy before authorizing the full run. Confirm that trimming has not removed the disclaimer or recipient’s name.
Specialist-pass workflow
- Select the product options first, because shape, size, finish and punch style determine the template you must use.
- Download the vendor’s current template and place your artwork on the indicated layer or guide.
- Set the document to the vendor’s requested color mode and resolution; RockStar Passes specifies CMYK, PDF and 300 DPI for its submitted artwork.
- Extend backgrounds to the bleed line and keep all critical text inside the safe area.
- Upload the file, inspect the online proof and confirm quantity, shipping address, timing and cost before paying.
Keep the gift clearly unofficial
Use “GTA-themed” or “GTA-inspired” as a description of the mood, not as a claim that the pass is an official product. Do not use Rockstar Games logos, copied game artwork or language such as “official airline” or “licensed boarding pass.” Original illustrations and invented names reduce the chance that the prop will be confused with official merchandise.

Rockstar Games’ customer-support policy, updated January 10, 2025, says: “This policy is intended to address occasional, non-commercial in-game content use by individual members of the Rockstar fan community.” The policy discusses limited non-commercial fan uses, defines non-commercial activity in relation to making money or promoting a product or service, and reserves the right to remove material. It is not blanket permission to print and sell a GTA-branded physical item, and it does not make a third-party generator an official Rockstar tool.
The company’s legal terms reserve rights in its content and marks and describe personal use of its services as non-commercial. For a personal gift, the cautious approach is to keep the design private, avoid official marks and do not advertise it as merchandise. If you plan to sell copies, use the design in an advertisement or distribute it publicly, obtain qualified rights advice and contact Rockstar’s copyright channel for a case-specific answer. Troubleshoot common problems

Gift presentation ideas
Reveal the pass in an envelope with a short note explaining the fictional destination. You can pair the ticket with a game-night invitation, a printed itinerary of planned activities or a small map that you drew yourself. Keep any additional graphics original and avoid presenting the package as an official Rockstar product.
For a surprise, put the recipient’s name on the outside of the envelope and the imaginary departure date inside. If the pass announces a real trip, use it only as a playful pre-trip reveal and keep the actual booking information in the airline’s official app or email rather than on the novelty prop.
Final pre-print checklist
- The recipient’s name and occasion are spelled correctly.
- Every airport, airline, flight and gate value is fictional.
- The pass includes a readable “novelty gift” or “not valid for travel” statement.
- No real airline logo, Rockstar logo, copied game artwork or misleading credential appears.
- The selected route—generator, self-design or vendor—matches your available time, equipment and desired finish.
- You opened the exported file and inspected it at full size.
- Home printing uses a supported paper setting and actual-size scaling.
- Vendor artwork follows that vendor’s current template, bleed, safe-area, format, color and resolution rules.
- You approved a proof before producing multiple copies.
- If you intend to sell or publicly promote the design, you obtained rights guidance instead of relying on a personal-use fan policy.
