You can loop a rain video in OBS and send it to YouTube Live, but one OBS session is not a dependable way to guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. For a practical setup, use an original or properly licensed rain recording, enable looping in OBS, test your stream before making it public, and plan shorter sessions if you need YouTube replays. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Before you start: check eligibility and prepare your rain media
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Its general live-stream guidance says streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel’s current Live Control Room status before building the broadcast, since eligibility and platform rules can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
Use media you have the right to stream
Choose rain footage and audio you recorded yourself, or material with a license that expressly covers the intended live use. YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to have the necessary worldwide rights for live content and to comply with applicable laws. Giving credit does not, by itself, grant permission. The cited sources do not establish India-specific licensing or broadcast requirements for this particular use, so check the rights attached to your own material rather than assuming a general rule. Read YouTube’s livestream terms.
Loop a rain video in OBS
Build a scene and add a local file
-
Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the broadcast. If this is a new installation, run Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard and apply settings suited to your computer and connection. OBS recommends testing settings and making a short test recording or stream; its Quick Start guide explains the setup.

In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Name the source, enable Local File, then browse to your rain video or audio file.
-
Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS documents Loop as off by default, so do not assume a file will repeat without checking this option. If you want to rotate through multiple files, use VLC Video with a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. See OBS Media Sources.
-
Fit the video to the canvas: right-click the source in the preview and use Transform > Fit to Screen. If the image is cropped or positioned incorrectly, adjust its transform and confirm that the preview shows the intended composition.

Watch and listen through a complete loop before relying on it. Confirm that the picture returns cleanly to the beginning, that the audio repeats as intended, and that the source’s audio reaches the OBS mixer without clipping or an unintended silent gap.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
-
In YouTube Studio, open Go live to reach Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream and configure its title, visibility, and other stream settings.
-
In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the URL and key using the connection method shown for your setup. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the connect-and-start workflow.
-
Treat the stream key like a password: it allows an encoder to send video to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings. YouTube describes stream keys and related controls in its stream settings guide.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
In YouTube’s stream settings, choose privacy, latency, DVR, and auto-start or auto-stop behavior for the intended broadcast. Ambient rain is not usually interactive, so lower latency may not be worth added buffering risk; select a playback experience your connection can sustain.

Choose settings your computer and upload connection can sustain
Start with a test, not the highest preset
Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the actual machine and network. Output resolution and frame rate affect system load; 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. A high resolution or frame rate is useful only if the encoder and connection can maintain it without dropped frames or unstable playback. OBS explains these trade-offs in its overview.
Set a sustainable bitrate
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, not as a guarantee or a YouTube-specific maximum. Upload speed can fluctuate, so leave headroom and judge the result using OBS’s dropped-frame statistics and YouTube’s Live Control Room health indicators. If frames drop, reduce the video bitrate and test again. OBS recommends a wired network connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. See OBS connection troubleshooting.
Check the stream before going public
-
Start with a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate, and inspect the Live Control Room preview before announcing a public broadcast.

Make a short local recording in OBS and play it back. If you intend to keep an independent archive during a live broadcast, verify that the local recording file is growing and has both picture and sound.
YouTube’s live tips recommend setting up the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview, monitoring quality, and verifying local recording or failover arrangements where used. A home creator can adapt those checks to available equipment; broadcast-grade redundancy is not a prerequisite for a basic setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan sessions around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
One 24-hour event is not a reliable replay strategy
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the replay matters, schedule shorter sessions and keep a local recording as a separate backup. A single 24-hour live event is not a dependable way to preserve a full replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Consider the viewer’s ability to rewind
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind in supported cases, but DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A continuous ambience stream may favor a long-running live event, while viewers who expect to rewind or replay benefit from shorter sessions and retained archives. Check YouTube’s DVR guidance when choosing the format.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS shows dropped frames or YouTube playback stutters | The connection is unstable or the selected bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity. | Use a wired connection where possible, reduce bitrate, and test at a lower setting. Check the router, modem, network cable, and connection stability. |
| The stream disconnects repeatedly | Interference or faults may be outside OBS, including VPN or security software, network-optimization software, router or modem problems, network-card or cable faults, or ISP congestion. | Temporarily check whether VPN/security or optimization software is interfering, inspect the network hardware and connection, and contact the ISP if the issue persists after troubleshooting. |
| The rain clip stops instead of repeating | Looping was not enabled, or the source was configured differently than expected. | Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop; for a VLC playlist, enable Loop Playlist. Verify the transition by watching and listening through the end of the file. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | The encoder may be using the wrong stream URL or key, or the selected YouTube event may not match the configured stream. | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the current URL and key in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; reset it in YouTube if it may have been exposed. |
| The live stream is missing from the archive or rewind is unavailable | The session exceeded 12 hours, or the feature is limited for a long broadcast. | Use shorter sessions if replay or DVR matters, and maintain a local recording if you need an independent copy. |
OBS notes that many connection problems are outside its control. A wired connection can reduce one source of instability, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service or resolve ISP congestion. Its detailed troubleshooting guidance covers further checks.
