The most effective way to reduce battery use from a 120Hz phone display is to lower its maximum refresh rate with the phone’s built-in controls. On a ProMotion iPhone, Apple documents a 60-frames-per-second cap through Low Power Mode or the separate Limit Frame Rate control. On the Samsung model covered by its cited manual, choose Settings > Display > Motion smoothness > Standard. Other Android phones use different names and menus, so look under Display or Battery for refresh-rate, motion-smoothness, or power-mode settings.
A refresh cap is not a guaranteed battery-life figure. Apple and Samsung describe the settings as power-saving controls, but the cited documentation does not report a percentage, number of hours, or other measured gain.
What changing the refresh rate actually does
A 120Hz display can update the image up to 120 times per second. A lower setting reduces that maximum update rate, which can reduce the work the display system performs. The phone still controls the refresh behavior within the limit; choosing a lower maximum is not the same as making every app run at one fixed rate.

The setting you need may be named Limit Frame Rate, Motion smoothness, Standard, Refresh rate, or part of a broader Power saving mode. Those labels are not interchangeable in every phone interface. Some controls affect only the display ceiling, while power modes also change brightness, background activity, or other functions.

You do not need an accessory for the documented iPhone and Samsung examples. The change is made in software, provided the phone and its current software expose the relevant control.
Before you change anything
- Confirm that your phone actually has a high-refresh display and a software control for it. A 120Hz specification alone does not establish that a 60Hz switch is available.
- Decide whether you want a display-only limit or a broader battery-saving mode.
- Expect smoother scrolling and motion to be less pronounced after lowering the cap. That is the trade-off for reducing the maximum refresh behavior.
- Do not use a promised number of extra hours as your success criterion. The official material cited here does not publish one.
iPhone with ProMotion: two documented ways to cap the display
Apple documents a 60-frames-per-second maximum for ProMotion iPhone displays. You can apply it as part of Low Power Mode or use the separate Limit Frame Rate control described in Apple’s onscreen-motion guide.
Option 1: Turn on Low Power Mode
- On an iPhone 15 or later, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.
- On an iPhone 14 or earlier, open Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
- Turn on Low Power Mode.
Apple says Low Power Mode limits the display refresh rate to 60 frames per second on ProMotion models. It is a broader power mode rather than a refresh-only switch: Apple also lists changes such as reduced brightness and reduced background activity among its effects. If you are already trying to extend battery life for other reasons, that broader behavior may be useful. Option 2: Enable Limit Frame Rate
- Open the iPhone’s onscreen-motion settings.
- Turn on Limit Frame Rate.
- On a ProMotion model, verify that the resulting maximum is 60 frames per second, as Apple describes in its guide.

Which iPhone option should you use?

The table describes Apple’s documented behavior, not a measured battery test. The actual effect on your phone depends on what you are doing and which other settings are active.
Samsung: use Standard Motion smoothness on the documented model
The Samsung manual cited for this guide gives the following path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Motion smoothness.
- Select Standard.
Samsung describes Standard as a standard refresh rate for normal situations to conserve battery power. The manual does not establish that every Samsung phone uses this exact label, menu order, or refresh-rate value. Treat this as the path for the model and software covered by the manual, not as a universal Samsung instruction. The source is the Samsung device manual’s Motion smoothness section.
If your Samsung menu looks different
- Use Settings search for Motion smoothness or refresh rate.
- Check Display first, then Battery or Device care for a power-saving mode.
- Read the description beside each option. “Standard,” “Adaptive,” and similar labels can have different meanings on different models.
- Do not assume that a missing 60Hz number means the phone is malfunctioning; the manufacturer may present only named modes.
Other Android phones: find the model-specific control
The Apple and Samsung documents do not establish one universal Android menu path. Android manufacturers can expose refresh controls in different places, and some models may not provide a manual cap at all.

- Open Settings and search for refresh rate, screen refresh rate, motion smoothness, or frame rate.
- If search finds nothing, inspect the phone’s Display settings for a motion or refresh section.
- Check Battery or Power saving settings for a mode that explicitly mentions display refresh behavior.
- Read the phone maker’s instructions for your exact model and software version before assuming that a setting from another phone applies.
- Choose the lowest available maximum only if the resulting motion is acceptable for your use.
Do not promise that every Android phone offers a fixed 60Hz option. The available choices, their names, and their effects are model- and software-dependent.
Display-only cap or broader power mode?
Use this decision framework before changing the setting:

On iPhone, Low Power Mode and Limit Frame Rate both produce the documented 60-frames-per-second ceiling on ProMotion models, but only Low Power Mode is described as changing other system behavior. On Samsung, Standard Motion smoothness is described as a normal-use refresh setting intended to conserve power.

- Record the setting you started with, such as the highest-refresh option.
- Change only the refresh-related setting first. If you enable a broader power mode, record that separately because it can affect more than the display.
- Use the phone in the same kind of routine on comparable days: similar brightness, connectivity, apps, and screen-on time.
- Compare the battery level after that routine, not just the percentage immediately after changing the menu.
- Repeat the comparison before deciding whether the smoother motion is worth the additional battery use for you.
This process can tell you whether the setting is useful on your own device, but it is not a controlled test and should not be presented as a universal battery-life result.
What you give up when you lower 120Hz
- Less motion smoothness: scrolling and transitions may look less fluid than they do at the highest available setting.
- Fewer display choices: some phones expose only named modes, so you may not be able to select an exact number.
- Broader restrictions in power modes: Low Power Mode can alter brightness and background activity in addition to limiting the ProMotion display.
- No guaranteed runtime: the official documentation identifies the intended power-saving behavior but does not quantify the resulting hours or percentage.
Lowering refresh rate is therefore a practical trade: you exchange some motion smoothness, and possibly other power-mode behavior, for the possibility of reduced display-related battery use.

The setting is missing
Confirm the phone model and software version, then search Settings using the terms above. If the control is still absent, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model. A missing option does not prove that the phone is locked at 120Hz; it may simply use a different label or expose no manual control.

That result is possible. The cited documentation does not promise a specific gain, and total battery use includes many activities besides display refresh. Repeat the comparison under similar conditions and make sure you did not compare a display-only cap with a day when other settings, brightness, apps, or connectivity were different.

The screen feels less smooth
That is the expected trade-off when the maximum refresh behavior is reduced. Restore the higher setting when smooth scrolling matters more, or use the lower setting only during long battery-critical periods.
Low Power Mode changed more than expected on iPhone
That is consistent with Apple’s description. Low Power Mode is a broader battery feature, not merely a 60-frames-per-second switch. Turn it off when you need its other behaviors restored, and use Limit Frame Rate instead when that separate control is available and a display-focused change better matches your goal.
A Samsung instruction does not match my phone
The documented Motion smoothness path applies to the cited Samsung manual. Samsung’s labels and menu structure can vary by model and software. Use your phone’s own Display or Battery settings and follow the instructions for that model rather than forcing the cited path.

A practical setup for everyday use
- Start with the phone’s highest-refresh setting so you know the normal motion experience.
- Locate the model-specific display or power control.
- Choose a display-only cap when you want to change refresh behavior without a broader power mode.
- Choose Low Power Mode or another power-saving mode when you also want the phone to reduce other battery-consuming behaviors.
- Use the phone normally for several comparable sessions and decide whether the visual trade-off is worthwhile.
- Switch back temporarily for activities where smoother motion is more important, then reapply the lower setting when battery conservation is the priority.
The documented, model-specific actions are simple: ProMotion iPhones can use Apple’s 60-frames-per-second cap through Low Power Mode or Limit Frame Rate, and the Samsung manual’s covered device uses Standard Motion smoothness. Every other phone should be treated according to its own software documentation.
