Clean and dry your pliers after use, put a small amount of suitable light oil into the pivot, work the joint open and closed, wipe away excess, and store the tool somewhere dry. Renew the protective film when it wears away. This simple routine limits corrosion and keeps the pivot moving without turning routine care into a major project.
If a joint is already stiff, surface spray alone may not solve the problem. Gummed-up oil and dirt can require a deliberate flush-and-work procedure. Lubrication also cannot repair a loose pivot, damaged cutting edges, cracked handles, or other wear that makes the tool unsafe.
Why plier maintenance matters
Pliers are exposed to moisture, skin oils, dust, adhesives, metal filings and other contaminants. The pivot is especially vulnerable because debris can work into a close-fitting joint while water remains trapped between the moving parts. Steel can rust when water and oxygen are present; condensation caused by temperature changes is another source of moisture.

Oil serves two separate purposes. A small amount at the pivot reduces friction and helps the joint move. A very thin film on suitable exposed metal also separates the steel from moisture. That film gradually disappears through use, wiping and evaporation, so protection has to be renewed.

Maintenance is not a substitute for repairing a worn tool. A wobbly joint, a cutting edge that no longer meets correctly, deep pitting, a cracked handle or another serious defect should be treated as a service-or-replacement issue rather than a lubrication problem. CHANNELLOCK lists loose joints, worn edges and other damage as wear conditions in its warranty guidance.
The quick after-use routine
For ordinary work, the following sequence takes only a few minutes.
- Remove dirt and moisture. Wipe the jaws, handles, pivot and exposed metal with a clean cloth. Pay particular attention to the seam around the pivot, where moisture can remain after the rest of the tool looks dry.
- Clean more heavily soiled tools with a compatible cleaner. Choose a cleaner that is suitable for the tool’s finish, grips and coatings, and follow the tool maker’s directions. Do not assume that a solvent safe for bare steel is safe for painted, plated or plastic-covered surfaces.
- Dry completely. Klein Tools advises drying tools thoroughly after washing. Leaving water in the joint defeats the purpose of oiling and can accelerate later rusting.
- Oil the pivot sparingly. Put a small amount of light oil at the joint. Open and close the pliers several times so the oil can enter the working surfaces.
- Protect suitable exposed metal. If the tool maker permits it, spread a trace of oil over bare metal with a soft cloth, then wipe off visible excess. The goal is a thin film, not a wet surface that attracts grit.
- Store the pliers dry. Keep them in a dry location and renew the protective film after it has worn away.
KNIPEX’s maintenance article dated 18 August 2023 gives the same starting point in direct terms: “First put a small amount of oil into the joint of the pliers.”

Choosing a cleaner and lubricant
There is no comparative test in the manufacturer material establishing one universal “best” product. Choose by the job the product must perform, its compatibility with the finish and grips, its viscosity, and whether the plier manufacturer recommends it.

Apply oil with a dropper, the tip of a small applicator or a cloth rather than flooding the joint. Excess oil runs onto handles and workpieces, collects abrasive dust and makes later cleaning harder.
How to clean pliers without damaging them
Start with a finish and grip check
Before using water, solvent or an abrasive, identify whether the tool has bare or blackened steel, chrome plating, paint, molded grips or another coating. The same cleaning method is not suitable for every surface. If the maker’s instructions are unavailable, use the least aggressive method first: a dry cloth, then a lightly damp cloth, followed by immediate drying.

For ordinary dirt
- Brush or wipe away loose particles from the jaws, pivot and handles.
- Use a compatible cleaner on a cloth rather than soaking the whole tool.
- Move the pliers through their normal range while wiping around the joint, taking care not to pinch fingers.
- Dry all surfaces and the pivot thoroughly.
- Apply the small amount of pivot oil and remove excess.
For old, very dirty or rusty tools
Klein Tools describes a more intensive cleaning process for old, very dirty or rusty tools, followed by thorough drying. A small amount of household oil on older tools can help prevent rust, but a cleaner or oil can interact with a particular finish or grip. When the construction is uncertain, follow that tool maker’s instructions instead of treating general tool guidance as a finish guarantee.

A stiff pivot can result from dried or gummed-up oil, compacted dirt, corrosion or mechanical damage. If the handles move unevenly, feel gritty or stop short of their normal travel, clean the outside first and then use the following manufacturer procedure.
KNIPEX flush-and-work procedure
- Spray or apply a thin oil to the joint.
- Move the legs briskly back and forth at least 30–50 times. This number is a KNIPEX instruction for working oil through a stiff joint; it is not a published effectiveness statistic.
- Wipe away the dark residue and expelled contamination.
- Apply another small drop of thicker oil.
- Open and close the tool again, then wipe away excess.
Gummed-up oil is a known contributor to stiffness, particularly in tools that are rarely used and rarely oiled. The flush is intended to carry that residue out rather than merely covering it with a surface film.

How CHANNELLOCK distinguishes cleaning from lubrication
CHANNELLOCK’s FAQ states: “You can use WD-40 to surface clean your pliers, but we don’t recommend using it to lubricate joints.” For its tools, the company recommends 3-IN-ONE oil on joints and channels after cleaning. Follow the instructions for the specific plier model; do not convert this brand-specific distinction into a claim that every penetrating or cleaning product is incompatible with every plier.
When oiling is not the answer
- Side-to-side play: a loose or wobbly pivot may require service or replacement.
- Uneven or damaged cutting edges: lubrication cannot restore missing metal or correct a misaligned cutter.
- Deep rust or pitting: corrosion can reduce strength and alter the fit of the joint.
- Cracked handles or damaged insulation: stop using the tool for electrical work and obtain appropriate service or replacement.
- Persistent binding after cleaning: stop forcing the handles; hidden damage may be present.
Preventing rust in storage and daily use
KNIPEX describes an oil film as the simplest method of rust protection and advises storing pliers in a dry place. The film must be renewed because ordinary use removes it. A dry cabinet or toolbox is preferable to a location where condensation forms on cold metal.

- Dry the tool immediately after washing or exposure to rain.
- Do not put damp pliers into a closed toolbox or drawer.
- Keep storage away from persistent humidity and temperature swings that cause condensation.
- After using the tool in a wet environment, inspect the pivot and reapply a protective film once it is dry.
Use a practical inspection rhythm
The KNIPEX maintenance article discusses tending tools every few weeks to keep them in excellent condition and appearance. That is maintenance advice, not a validated universal schedule. A better trigger is use and environment: inspect after wet or dirty jobs, and check stored tools periodically for a dull orange film, dark residue or increasing resistance at the pivot.

Consider finish choice in a condensation-prone location
KNIPEX notes that a chrome-plated version may make sense where condensation cannot be avoided. Plating does not eliminate the need to dry and inspect the tool, but it is a finish consideration when the storage environment is persistently damp.

Identify the finish before using an abrasive
KNIPEX names abrasive rubber as one possible rust-removal method, followed by oiling. In separate polishing guidance, however, it warns that abrasive rubber is for black or atramentised pliers and must not be used on chrome-plated tools because it can damage the coating. Put this warning next to the method every time you plan the work.
Black or atramentised pliers
- Remove loose dirt and dry the tool.
- Use fine abrasive rubber gently on the affected steel, working only as much as needed.
- Wipe away the removed residue.
- Apply a suitable protective oil film.
- Store the tool dry and inspect it again after use.
Chrome-plated pliers
Do not use abrasive rubber. KNIPEX recommends common solvent cleaners in its chrome-plated polishing guidance, subject to compatibility with the rest of the tool. Apply the cleaner to a cloth, work carefully, dry completely and oil only where the tool maker permits it.

When rust means the tool should leave service
Surface discoloration can sometimes be cleaned, but deep pits, flaking plating, a weakened section or a joint that remains loose after cleaning is not a cosmetic maintenance problem. Replace or send the tool for service when corrosion or wear could affect grip, cutting accuracy or safe handling.
Maintenance by frequency and situation

- Wipe away excess and, where suitable, leave only a thin surface film.
- Store in a dry place and renew the film when it wears away.
- For stiffness, flush with thin oil and work the joint 30–50 times before cleaning out residue.
- Never use abrasive rubber on chrome-plated pliers.
- Treat loose joints, damaged cutters, deep pitting and cracked handles as service or replacement issues.
What the manufacturer guidance does—and does not—establish
The recommendations above come from manufacturer care and warranty guidance: KNIPEX explains rust prevention, finish-specific rust removal and its stiff-joint procedure; its English maintenance article is dated 18 August 2023. CHANNELLOCK specifies 3-IN-ONE oil for its joints and channels after cleaning and distinguishes surface cleaning with WD-40 from joint lubrication. Klein Tools advises cleaning after use and thorough drying after washing.
These sources do not provide a comparative laboratory test, a population-level lifespan statistic or a universally validated maintenance interval. The 30–50 movements are an instruction for distributing oil through a stiff KNIPEX joint, not a measured success rate. Use the condition of your tool and its environment to decide when to clean and reapply protection, while keeping the product and finish qualifications attached to each manufacturer’s advice.
