Maintain a pneumatic impact wrench by treating its two working systems separately: put the specified air-tool oil through the air inlet for the air motor, and apply the specified grease to the impact mechanism using the method in that wrench’s product information manual. Disconnect and bleed the air supply before service, inspect the tool and accessories, and follow the model’s lubricant type, quantity and runtime interval. There is no universal oil or grease recipe for every air impact wrench.
For example, Ingersoll Rand’s 2922 Series guide calls for 8–12 drops of #10 air-tool oil before each use and 4 cc of #170 grease after every 48 hours of accumulated trigger runtime. Those figures apply to that series, not to every make or model. Other Ingersoll Rand manuals specify different quantities and service contexts, which is why the exact manual must be your starting point.
Why an air impact wrench needs two different lubrication routines
A pneumatic impact wrench contains an air motor and a striking mechanism. Compressed air drives the motor; the motor turns the anvil through gears, a hammer assembly and related bearings. The motor is lubricated with a light air-tool oil carried through the inlet. The impact mechanism needs a heavier grease applied at a fitting or during a model-specific service procedure.

Oil that is appropriate for the motor can migrate out of the hammer case and provide inadequate film strength for repeated impacts. Heavy impact grease can restrict or damage the air motor if introduced through the inlet. Lubricating only one system leaves the other exposed to wear, heat and corrosion.

Manufacturers also differ in lubricant specification, quantity, access point and interval. Ingersoll Rand’s general Impactool guidance says to check the product information manual for the grease type and amount for a specific tool. Use the examples below to understand the process, not to substitute for your wrench’s instructions.
Start with the exact model and manual
Find the model number on the housing, identification plate or original paperwork. Record the series and any suffix; similar-looking tools can have different service instructions. Download or obtain the current product information manual from the manufacturer or an authorized service source, then locate the sections titled maintenance, lubrication, air supply, grease or hammer case.
Before applying anything, write down four requirements from that manual:
- the approved air-tool oil for the motor;
- the approved impact-mechanism grease;
- the application method, such as inlet, grease fitting or hammer-case service; and
- the interval, including whether it is based on trigger runtime, shots, operating hours or a calendar period.
Do not infer a quantity from a nearby model. A manual may give one amount for routine oiling and another, much larger amount for a teardown or repair. Those instructions are not equivalent.
Safety and inspection before lubrication
Lubrication is maintenance, not a reason to work on a pressurized tool. Ingersoll Rand’s 2705P1 maintenance information directs operators to turn off the air supply, bleed pressure and disconnect the hose before installing, removing or adjusting an accessory or performing maintenance. Wear eye protection throughout the procedure.

- Close the compressor or shop-air valve supplying the tool.
- Press the trigger briefly, with the socket pointed in a safe direction, to release residual pressure if the manual permits that step.
- Disconnect the air hose and verify that the tool cannot cycle.
- Remove the socket and any extension or adapter.
- Wipe dirt from the inlet, grease fitting and surrounding housing so contamination cannot enter.
Inspect the tool, hose, couplers, fittings, sockets and accessories for cracks, deformation, leaks, excessive wear or loose connections. The 2922 Series guide specifically requires checking these items and says not to use damaged components. Replace defective parts before returning the wrench to service.
Lubricating the air motor
Hand-oiling through the air inlet
Most pneumatic impact-wrench maintenance starts at the air inlet. With the hose disconnected, place only the quantity and type of oil specified by the manual into the inlet. Reconnect the hose after oiling and run the wrench briefly in both directions, without a load if the manual allows, to distribute the oil. Hold the tool so expelled oil cannot contact people, finished surfaces or brake components.
The 2922 Series instruction, updated August 19, 2026, specifies 8–12 drops of #10 air-tool oil through the inlet before each use. This is a model-specific instruction. Ingersoll Rand’s broader Impactool article describes 10–15 drops of #10 air-tool oil before use and before storage for the tools covered by that guidance. Because the quantities differ, do not combine them or apply either number automatically to another wrench.
Inline lubricators
An approved air-line lubricator can meter oil into a pneumatic-tool circuit, which may be useful in a fixed workshop installation. Set it according to the wrench manual and the lubricator’s instructions; excessive oil can contaminate the work area and may not reach the tool consistently through a long or branching hose.
Ingersoll Rand’s maintenance guidance explicitly says an inline lubricator does not replace daily hand oiling of the tool. Use the inlet-oiling instruction whenever the manual calls for it, even when the shop has an air-treatment unit. An inline device is an optional setup aid, not permission to omit the manufacturer’s routine.

Oiling before storage
When the wrench will sit unused, follow the manual’s storage procedure. The general Ingersoll Rand guidance includes oiling before storage. Disconnect the hose, add the specified amount through the inlet, run the tool briefly if instructed, wipe the exterior and store it in a clean, dry place. Do not leave a pressurized hose connected during storage.

Lubricating the impact mechanism
Grease fitting procedure
If the wrench has a grease fitting, use the grease type, grease gun and quantity named in its manual. Clean the fitting first, attach the coupler squarely, pump the specified amount and remove the coupler without forcing grease past a seal. Wipe away excess grease from the fitting and housing before reconnecting air.
The 2922 Series guide specifies 4 cc of IR #170 grease after every 48 hours of accumulated runtime. Its wording is important: the 48-hour interval means the time the trigger is pressed, not 48 calendar hours. A shop that runs the wrench for six hours a day reaches the interval sooner than a homeowner who uses it for a few minutes each month.
Hammer-case service
Some impact wrenches have no external fitting or require the hammer case to be opened for a particular lubrication task. Do not remove the hammer case as routine maintenance unless the model manual calls for it and you have the service competence, tools and replacement seals needed for reassembly. Opening the case can expose precisely fitted parts, release spring tension and create alignment or contamination problems.
When a manual does require case service, photograph the assembly before disassembly, keep parts in order, clean old grease as directed, apply only the specified lubricant and quantity, and torque fasteners to the stated values. If those instructions are unavailable, use an authorized service center rather than guessing.

What the published model examples actually specify
| Tool or guidance | Motor oil instruction | Impact-mechanism grease instruction | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ingersoll Rand 2922 Series guide, updated August 19, 2026 | 8–12 drops of #10 air-tool oil through the inlet before each use | 4 cc of #170 grease through the fitting after every 48 hours of accumulated trigger runtime | Routine guidance for the 2922 Series |
| Ingersoll Rand general Impactool maintenance guidance, updated 2024 | 10–15 drops of #10 air-tool oil before use and before storage | Check the individual product information manual for grease type and amount; general guidance describes service after every 48 hours of tool runtime | Covered Impactool tools; not a universal recipe |
| Ingersoll Rand 2705P1 maintenance information | 1–2 cc of oil during disassembly for maintenance or repair | 4–6 cc of grease during disassembly for maintenance or repair | Model-specific teardown/service quantities, not ordinary pre-use dosing |
| Ingersoll Rand 2920B/2920B9 service lubrication information | 1–2 cc of #50 oil | 12–15 cc of #170 grease | Model-specific service lubrication quantities, not a universal routine |
The table demonstrates why copying a number from one manual is unsafe. The 2705P1 and 2920B/2920B9 figures describe disassembly or service lubrication, while the 2922 Series figures describe routine operation. Keep those contexts attached to every quantity.
A complete maintenance sequence
Use this sequence as a framework, then substitute your model’s exact lubricant, amount and interval.
- Identify the wrench. Read the model and series marking and obtain the matching product information manual.
- Plan the service. Confirm the oil, grease, application points, quantity, interval and any required grease gun or service tools.
- Make the tool safe. Shut off air, bleed pressure, disconnect the hose, remove the socket and put on eye protection.
- Inspect. Check the housing, trigger, forward/reverse control, anvil, retainer, hose, couplers, sockets and extensions. Do not operate with damaged components.
- Clean access points. Wipe the inlet and grease fitting. Keep lint, metal chips and solvent out of the air passage.
- Oil the motor. Add the manual’s specified drops or measured volume through the inlet. Do not pour impact grease into the inlet.
- Distribute oil. Reconnect air only after the manual’s safety conditions are met, then run the wrench briefly as directed. Keep hands clear and control overspray.
- Grease the impact mechanism. Use the external fitting or the manual’s service procedure. Pump or measure only the stated amount.
- Wipe excess. Remove grease from the fitting, anvil and housing so it cannot attract abrasive dust or reach the workpiece.
- Record runtime. Reset your maintenance log or mark the accumulated trigger hours so the next grease interval is based on actual use.
- Test carefully. Listen for abnormal noise, check for leaks and verify forward and reverse operation at low load before normal work.
How to track a runtime-based interval
A trigger-runtime interval is not the same as elapsed ownership time. Record the hours the trigger is actually pressed, using a simple notebook, shop log or hour meter if the wrench is used continuously. For intermittent work, estimate only when the manufacturer permits estimation; otherwise service at the specified measured runtime.
For example, a 48-hour interval could be reached in eight weeks by a production user running six trigger-hours per week, or in many months by occasional use. Calendar reminders can prompt an inspection, but they cannot replace a runtime record when the manual defines the interval that way.

Lubricant cannot compensate for contaminated or wet compressed air. Drain the compressor receiver and maintain filters, separators and regulators according to their instructions. Keep the hose interior clean, cap the inlet when the tool is disconnected and avoid dragging the hose through water, grit or metal chips.

After use, brush or wipe debris from the anvil and housing. Remove a socket rather than storing the wrench with a loaded accessory. Store the tool with the amount of oil specified for storage, in a dry cabinet away from corrosive chemicals and extreme heat. Never use a solvent that attacks seals or painted surfaces unless the manual approves it.
Symptoms that indicate a lubrication or service problem
The motor runs weakly or stalls
- Check that the compressor, regulator, hose and couplers deliver the pressure and flow required by the manual.
- Verify that the inlet received the correct air-tool oil, not impact grease or a general-purpose lubricant.
- Look for a blocked inlet screen, kinked hose or excessive water in the air supply.
- If performance remains poor, stop using the wrench and arrange service; worn vanes, bearings or seals can mimic an oiling problem.
The wrench impacts weakly or irregularly
- Confirm that the impact mechanism was greased at the stated runtime and through the correct access point.
- Check for an incorrect socket, damaged anvil, loose retainer or worn impact parts.
- Do not keep adding grease in an attempt to restore power. Over-greasing can increase drag and heat, while the wrong grease can damage components.
Grease or oil leaks from the nose
- Wipe the area and identify whether the fluid is motor oil, impact grease or contaminated residue.
- Review the amount applied and confirm that the correct seal, plug and fitting are installed.
- Stop operation if leakage is heavy, reaches the workpiece or is accompanied by noise, heat or vibration; a seal or housing may require replacement.
The tool becomes unusually hot or noisy
Disconnect it, let it cool and inspect for over-greasing, inadequate oil, blocked air passages, bearing wear or loose fasteners. Do not continue operating a tool that develops grinding noise, severe vibration or rapidly increasing temperature.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using one lubricant everywhere: motor oil and impact grease serve different components.
- Copying a quantity from another model: published Ingersoll Rand examples range from drops for routine oiling to measured cubic-centimeter quantities for teardown service.
- Treating 48 hours as 48 days or 48 calendar hours: in the 2922 Series guide, it means accumulated trigger runtime.
- Assuming an inline lubricator replaces hand oiling: the manufacturer says it does not replace daily tool oiling.
- Opening the hammer case casually: do so only when the manual requires it and you can complete the service correctly.
- Servicing while connected: pressure can cycle the tool or eject an accessory.
- Ignoring accessories: cracked sockets, worn extensions and loose fittings can fail even when the wrench itself is lubricated.
- Wiping away all grease from a fitting and leaving it dry: remove only excess after applying the specified amount.
When professional service is the safer choice
Use an authorized or suitably qualified repair service when the manual calls for disassembly you cannot perform, when the hammer case is damaged, when fasteners require a specified torque you cannot verify, or when the wrench has persistent leakage, metal debris, severe vibration or loss of impact after correct lubrication and air-supply checks.
Provide the technician with the exact model, operating symptoms, lubricant used, approximate trigger runtime and any recent repairs. That information helps distinguish a lubrication error from worn vanes, bearings, seals, hammer components or anvil damage.
