The safest way to maintain an electric tricycle is to combine a short check before every ride with the charging, pressure, storage, and service instructions in its owner manual. Battery chemistry, tire construction and valve type, and brake design vary by model, so there is no universal charging percentage, tire PSI, brake adjustment, or fluid specification. Use the routine below as a framework, then treat your trike’s manual and component markings as the final authority.
Start with the specifications for your tricycle
Before buying parts or changing a setting, record the information that determines the correct maintenance procedure:
- Battery maker, chemistry if stated, voltage, charger model, and any charging or storage instructions.
- Tire size, valve type, maximum marked pressure, and the pressure recommended by the tricycle maker.
- Brake type on each wheel: mechanical or hydraulic, and disc, drum, rim, or another design.
- Approved replacement parts, tools, service intervals, and the point at which the maker requires an authorized technician.
Those details matter because examples from different manuals are not interchangeable. A Vermeiren maintenance manual calls for checks before every ride, while a PAIRA manual specifies a monthly battery-status check and one full slow charge each month. Xion’s July 2026 commercial-pedicab guide lists 40 psi for particular three-seat and six-seat models, but that figure is not an electric-tricycle standard.

How to maintain the battery
Identify the correct charging procedure
Read the battery and charger labels and the supplied manual before connecting anything. Charging cadence, acceptable storage state, charge time, and temperature limits depend on the battery design and the manufacturer’s control system. Do not substitute a generic percentage or schedule for an instruction that is specific to your model.

Use the charger supplied with the tricycle or one explicitly approved by its manufacturer. The Electric Bike Technologies Electric Fat Trike manual, reproduced by Device.report, directs owners to use charging products supplied with the trike or obtained directly from Electric Bike Technologies. That accessory instruction applies to that product; another tricycle may require a different charger, connector, or charging sequence. Inspect before plugging in
- Park the tricycle on a stable, dry surface where the charger and cable will not be crushed or pulled.
- Examine the battery case, mounting points, connector, charger, and cable for cracks, deformation, exposed conductors, corrosion, or heat damage.
- Check that the charging port is clean and dry. Do not force a connector or charge through a damaged port.
- Confirm that the charger matches the tricycle and that the plug seats fully without unusual looseness.
If the battery is swollen, leaking, unusually hot, emits an odor, or has suffered impact damage, disconnect it only if doing so is safe, keep it away from combustible materials, and obtain qualified service. Do not open a battery pack or attempt cell-level repair.
Charge and monitor according to the manual
Stay within the charging steps, indicators, and completion signal described by the maker. Do not assume that a green light, a timed charge, or leaving the pack connected overnight has the same meaning on every system. Keep ventilation around the charger, avoid covering it, and prevent water from reaching the charger or battery.

The PAIRA manual asks owners to check battery level and status monthly and ensure a full slow charge once a month. Treat that as a PAIRA-specific maintenance instruction. If your manual gives a different cadence, use its procedure instead.
Remember that “maintenance-free” has limits
Vermeiren describes its electric-tricycle batteries as maintenance-free, yet still calls for checking battery condition before rides, inspecting cables, cleaning dirt from the battery and housing periodically, and checking charger operation every six months. In practice, maintenance-free means the battery is not intended for routine internal servicing; it does not mean the pack, connectors, charger, or wiring can be ignored.

Storage and periods of non-use
Use the storage state, location, and recharging interval specified for your battery. If the manual does not state a procedure, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider rather than inventing a percentage or temperature limit. Store the tricycle in a dry, secure place, protect the battery and charger from moisture, and inspect the pack and cables before returning to service.
Battery symptoms that require a service decision
- Range or charge behavior changes abruptly rather than gradually.
- The charger repeatedly stops, displays an error, or becomes abnormally hot.
- The connector is loose, discolored, or damaged.
- The pack is swollen, cracked, leaking, or physically distorted.
- The tricycle loses power under normal load or will not start after the manual’s charging procedure.
Record the indicator lights, circumstances, and any error code, then contact the maker or an authorized technician. Avoid repeated test rides with a suspected electrical or battery fault.

How to maintain the tires
Inspect condition before riding
Walk around the tricycle and examine every tire, including the sidewalls and the area around the valve. Look for cuts, bulges, exposed casing, embedded objects, cracking, uneven wear, or a tread pattern that has become visibly shallow. Check that the wheel is seated correctly and that the valve cap is present. A damaged tire should be repaired or replaced using a component approved for the wheel and load.
Vermeiren lists tire and pressure checks before every ride, and PAIRA calls for checking tire pressure and wear. Those intervals are sensible for a safety-critical, load-bearing component, especially after carrying cargo, riding over rough surfaces, or leaving the tricycle unused.
Use the specified pressure, not a generic number
Find the recommended pressure in the owner manual, on the tire sidewall, or in the maker’s service information, and distinguish a recommended operating pressure from the tire’s maximum marking. Inflate all tires to the pressure appropriate for that model and load; do not copy a number from another tricycle.

For example, Xion Motors’ Pedicab Maintenance Manual & Service Schedule, published in July 2026, gives 40 psi for its named three-seat and six-seat commercial pedicabs. That value is a specification for those pedicabs only, not a setting for a private electric tricycle.

Check the valve before selecting a pump. The Electric Bike Technologies Electric Fat Trike manual identifies a Schrader valve and recommends a bicycle floor pump compatible with Schrader valves and an analog gauge. A pump that does not seal on your valve can give a false reading or damage the valve core. Verify your own valve type and pressure marking before inflating.
- Remove the cap and inspect the valve for dirt or damage.
- Attach the gauge or pump head squarely so air is not lost around the seal.
- Inflate in small increments and recheck the reading with the pump head seated correctly.
- Replace the cap, then inspect the tire bead and sidewall for bulges or an uneven seat.
Pressure can change with temperature and load, so make checks under conditions consistent with the maker’s instructions. If pressure repeatedly falls, look for a puncture, leaking valve, rim damage, or a tire that is not seated correctly instead of continually adding air.
Replace tires and tubes as a matched system
Use the exact wheel diameter, width, load rating, tread category, and valve arrangement specified for the tricycle. Confirm whether the wheel uses an inner tube or a tubeless system before ordering a replacement. Replace a damaged rim tape, tube, valve, or tire with compatible parts, and have a technician handle work that requires removing a motor wheel, opening a sealed hub, or disturbing electrical wiring.
How to maintain the brakes
Perform a functional check before every ride
- With the tricycle stationary, apply each brake control separately and confirm that it engages firmly.
- At walking speed in a clear area, verify that the tricycle slows and stops in a straight, predictable manner.
- Check that a lever, pedal, or control does not pull to the bar, feel spongy, stick, or return slowly.
- Look for damaged cables, loose hardware, contaminated braking surfaces, fluid traces, or visibly worn components.
Vermeiren includes brake checks before every ride. PAIRA calls for checking brake-system wear and adjustment and, where applicable, checking hydraulic-fluid level and leaks.

Do not assume one adjustment method fits every brake
Brake systems differ in construction and service requirements. Xion’s commercial pedicab specification uses hydraulic disc brakes, while another tricycle may use mechanical discs, drums, rim brakes, or a different arrangement. The available manuals establish that designs vary; they do not establish a universal pad thickness, lever travel, cable adjustment, fluid type, or bleeding procedure.
Use the exact service instructions for your brake model. Do not add fluid unless the system is confirmed to be hydraulic and the manual identifies the correct fluid. Never mix fluids. If a hydraulic line leaks, a lever feels spongy, a rotor or drum is damaged, or braking force is inadequate, stop riding and use a qualified service provider.
Recognize brake-warning symptoms
- The tricycle takes longer to stop or does not hold on a slope where it previously did.
- Braking is uneven, pulls to one side, or changes during a ride.
- A lever, pedal, cable, caliper, or pad moves abnormally.
- You see fluid, a damaged hose, a bent rotor, loose fasteners, or severe component wear.
- Noise is accompanied by reduced stopping power, vibration, or visible damage.
A light surface noise without a performance change may have a simple cause, but do not diagnose by sound alone. Stopping performance and visible condition determine whether the tricycle is safe to ride.

- Battery and controls: confirm the battery is secured, the case and cables look undamaged, and the power system starts normally.
- Tires and wheels: check pressure against the model’s specification, inspect for damage, and verify that wheels are secure.
- Brakes: test each brake at a standstill and at walking speed in a clear area.
- Structure: look for loose fasteners, cracks, bent parts, or cargo that could interfere with steering, wheels, or brakes.
- Short record: note a pressure correction, unusual noise, warning light, or fault so a recurring problem is visible to you or a technician.
If any check fails, do not compensate by riding more slowly or carrying less. Correct the fault or arrange service first.

Tools and replacement parts
A useful basic kit contains only tools that match your tricycle:
- A floor pump and pressure gauge compatible with the installed valve; the cited Electric Fat Trike example uses Schrader compatibility.
- The manual’s specified wrenches or hex keys for accessible fasteners.
- A clean cloth and a soft brush for removing dirt from the battery housing and frame.
- Manufacturer-approved tubes, tires, brake pads, cables, rotors, hoses, or chargers identified by the exact model.
Do not select parts solely by appearance or nominal size. Confirm connector type, voltage, wheel dimensions, tire load rating, brake interface, and left/right or front/rear fit. A component that physically installs may still be electrically, structurally, or hydraulically incompatible.
When routine maintenance should stop
Owner checks are appropriate for inspection, pressure measurement, cleaning, and the simple procedures explicitly described in the manual. Escalate to the manufacturer or an authorized service center when:
- The battery or charger is damaged, swollen, leaking, overheating, or producing repeated faults.
- A drive unit, sealed hub, wiring harness, or connector needs opening or replacement.
- Hydraulic brakes need bleeding, a hose or fitting leaks, or braking remains weak after the documented adjustment.
- A wheel, frame, fork, axle, or brake mount is bent, cracked, or loose in a way you cannot correct with the manual’s procedure.
- You cannot identify the correct replacement part or the manual does not define a safe repair.
PAIRA specifically recommends professional repair for problems an owner cannot solve, and Vermeiren says its drive unit is to be serviced by an authorized service center. Keep the tricycle out of use until the service provider confirms it is safe.
What to compare when servicing or replacing components
There is no single “best” battery, tire, or brake system for every electric tricycle. Compare the specifications that determine compatibility:

Keep a simple maintenance record
Write down the date, odometer reading if available, tire-pressure reading, battery observations, brake-test result, parts replaced, and the person or shop that performed service. A record helps identify a slow pressure leak, a change in battery behavior, or recurring brake adjustment. Save the charger model and component part numbers with the manual so replacements can be verified before purchase.

Maintain an electric tricycle with a pre-ride inspection of tires, brakes, battery condition, and cables; follow the exact charging and storage instructions for its battery; use the specified tire pressure and a compatible gauge; and treat every brake adjustment or fluid procedure as model-specific. Stop riding when a battery, wheel, brake, or drive-unit fault exceeds the owner checks, and use the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for the repair.
