The safest maintenance plan is model-specific: use the current manual for your exact station and battery chemistry, keep it dry and within the stated temperature range, avoid storing it empty, and inspect it on the interval the manufacturer specifies. Do not apply one “ideal” charge percentage to every power station. Official guidance differs—for example, one manufacturer recommends about 80% for storage, while several product manuals specify a three-month routine that ends at 60%.

Start with the exact model and battery chemistry

Portable power stations look similar, but their storage limits, charge targets, and maintenance routines can differ substantially. Before choosing a percentage or setting a calendar reminder, record the manufacturer, model, battery chemistry, rated capacity, and manual revision. The label on the underside, the companion app, and the specifications page usually provide the model and capacity. The manual should be treated as the controlling document for charging, discharging, storage, temperature, and warranty requirements.

Chemistry matters because manufacturers publish different limits even within the same product family. Jackery’s support guidance separates NCM and LiFePO₄ units. EcoFlow’s E980 manual describes an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) station with a 980 Wh capacity. Do not assume that a recommendation for one LFP model applies to every LFP station, or that an NCM recommendation applies to every NCM station.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Write down the model number: a product-family name is not enough when several generations exist.
  • Check the chemistry: use the specification or manual rather than guessing from the product’s appearance.
  • Check the manual’s date and revision: manufacturers can change procedures, temperature limits, or warranty conditions.
  • Keep the manual accessible: a downloaded PDF is useful when the station is stored for a season or emergency.

How to store a power station safely

Storage has three separate decisions: the charge level, the environment, and the inspection interval. Follow all three in the same manual instead of combining the percentage from one product with the temperature limits from another.

Use the manufacturer’s charge target, not a universal percentage

Never put a station away at 0% unless that exact product’s current manual explicitly requires a discharge as part of a defined maintenance procedure. Jackery’s long-term-storage support article, updated July 2, 2026, says, “Do not store the battery at 0% charge” and recommends keeping remaining capacity around 80%. That is Jackery’s guidance for the products covered by that page, not a universal rule.

Several EcoFlow manuals describe a different routine. The E980 instructions say to discharge the product to 0%, then recharge it to 60% every three months during long-term storage. The RIVER 3 Plus manual result likewise describes charging and discharging every three months and storing at 60%. The GLACIER plug-in battery manual gives the same 60% endpoint and adds a recovery step: if its charge is below 1% after use, charge it to 60% before storage. These procedures are product-specific. Do not intentionally discharge another station to 0% merely because one of these manuals includes that step.

Official example Storage charge instruction Periodic routine or limit What not to generalize
Jackery support guidance, updated July 2, 2026 Keep remaining capacity around 80%; do not store at 0%. Power on and check approximately every three months. The 80% figure applies to the products covered by that support article.
EcoFlow E980 manual (LFP, 980 Wh) Discharge to 0%, then recharge to 60% as part of the storage procedure. Perform the charge/discharge routine every three months; do not leave uncharged or unused for more than six months. The 0%-to-60% procedure is for the E980 instructions, not every power station.
EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus manual Charge and discharge every three months, then store at 60%. The manual result also warns against leaving the unit unused for more than six months. The source result does not establish a chemistry-independent rule for other models.
EcoFlow GLACIER plug-in battery manual Charge and discharge every three months, then store at 60%. If the battery is below 1% after use, charge it to 60% before storage. This is a plug-in battery procedure, not a general power-station target.

Choose a suitable place

Store the unit indoors or in another location that remains dry, clean, and within the manual’s temperature range. Jackery warns against wet, dusty, high-temperature, or high-humidity environments and against long-term storage in a vehicle, where a parked cabin can exceed the recommended range. Do not place the station where condensation, direct sun, leaking pipes, or chemical fumes can reach it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave the vents and cooling surfaces unobstructed as the manual requires. Do not wrap the station in an airtight covering that traps heat or moisture. Keep it away from loose metal objects that could bridge an output or charging connector, and prevent heavy items from pressing on ports, switches, or the display.

Set a recurring inspection reminder

For a unit kept in reserve, create a calendar reminder using the manual’s interval. Jackery recommends powering on and checking the device approximately every three months. The EcoFlow examples also use a three-month maintenance cycle and caution against leaving the unit uncharged or unused for more than six months. At each check, look for abnormal swelling, cracks, corrosion, liquid exposure, unusual odor, error messages, or a sudden loss of indicated capacity. If any of those signs appear, stop using and charging the station and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service route.

Temperature limits you must not exceed

Temperature limits are separate for charging, discharging, and storage. A station may permit output at a temperature at which charging is prohibited. Use the limits printed in the exact product specification; do not substitute a familiar number from another model.

Example guidance Discharge/output Charging Storage Preferred range where stated
Jackery NCM families covered by its support page −10°C to 40°C 0°C to 40°C −10°C to 40°C Not stated on the cited support guidance.
Jackery LiFePO₄ families covered by its support page −10°C to 45°C 0°C to 45°C −10°C to 45°C Not stated on the cited support guidance.
EcoFlow E980 manual −10°C to 45°C 0°C to 45°C −10°C to 45°C 20°C to 30°C is identified as optimal.

These ranges are examples from the named manufacturer documents, not a specification for every station. Charging below 0°C is specifically outside the example charging ranges above. If a station has been in a very hot, cold, or damp location, move it to a suitable environment and allow it to return to the manual’s permitted range before charging or using it. Do not attempt to accelerate warming or cooling with a heater, freezer, hair dryer, or other improvised method.

A practical maintenance procedure

Use the following sequence whenever you put a station into seasonal or emergency-reserve storage. Replace the charge target and interval with the values in your own manual.

  1. Inspect before charging. Unplug all loads. Check the housing, handles, ports, cables, display, and vents for damage, liquid, dirt, corrosion, swelling, or a burning smell. Do not continue if the battery appears deformed or damaged.
  2. Bring it into the permitted temperature range. Place the station in a dry location and wait until its temperature is within the manual’s charging range. A cold or hot exterior does not prove that the cells are ready to charge.
  3. Use the specified charger and cable. Connect the manufacturer-approved input arrangement. Do not improvise with a charger whose voltage, current, connector, or polarity is not approved for the model.
  4. Apply the model’s storage routine. If the manual calls for a direct storage percentage, charge to that level. If it calls for a periodic discharge and recharge, follow the stated sequence rather than inventing a cycle.
  5. Disconnect after the procedure. Once the target is reached, remove the charging source unless the manual explicitly supports a different connected-storage mode. Coil cables loosely and store them dry.
  6. Record the date and reading. Note the date, displayed percentage, and any warning code. This makes a later capacity change easier to identify.
  7. Store with ventilation and protection. Keep the station upright if the manual specifies an orientation, protect it from moisture and dust, and leave vents clear.
  8. Recheck on schedule. Power it on only as often as the manual recommends, verify the display and error status, and perform the prescribed charge/discharge routine.

Charging and usage habits that reduce unnecessary wear

Follow the station’s operating instructions during ordinary use, not only during storage. Avoid running the battery completely empty when the load can be stopped earlier, unless the model’s manual specifically requires a full discharge for its maintenance cycle. A low-battery shutdown is not a useful everyday target. Disconnect loads when they are no longer needed so the inverter and USB circuits are not consuming energy while the station sits unattended.

Use the station within its rated output and surge limits. A load that repeatedly triggers overload protection, causes thermal warnings, or operates near the maximum continuously can create more heat than a lighter load. Leave cooling clear during high-power operation. Never use a damaged cable, loose plug, wet connector, or visibly contaminated port.

Solar, vehicle, and wall charging inputs can have different voltage and current requirements. Use only combinations the manual lists as compatible. If an app offers firmware updates, read the release notes and keep the station connected to a stable power source during the update; do not interrupt an update by switching off the unit or removing its input.

Cleaning and physical protection

Keep cleaning conservative. The EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus manual result instructs users to wipe the product with a soft, dry cloth. That is a safe baseline only where it agrees with your own manual.

  • Power the station down and disconnect every input and output before wiping it.
  • Use a clean, soft, dry cloth on the exterior.
  • Keep liquid, sprays, solvents, oils, and compressed moisture away from ports, switches, screens, seams, and vents unless the manufacturer explicitly directs otherwise.
  • Do not wash the station, submerge it, or open the enclosure to clean internal components.
  • Keep vents clear according to the manual, using only the cleaning method it permits.
  • Protect the unit from water, dust, and humidity; many portable stations are not fully waterproof or dustproof.

Opening the enclosure can expose high-energy components and may void the warranty. Battery cells, fuses, and internal wiring are not user-serviceable merely because the station has stopped accepting a charge. A service center or manufacturer-authorized route should assess internal faults.

What to do when a stored station will not start

No display or response

First check that the power button is being pressed in the manner specified by the manual; some stations require a hold rather than a tap. Disconnect all loads and inspect for damage. If the unit is outside the permitted temperature range, allow it to return naturally to the stated range. Then connect the approved charger and observe the indicator for the time specified by the manual. Do not repeatedly force the power button or connect random adapters.

The unit reports 0% or very low charge

Do not assume that a zero reading means you should immediately perform a deep discharge. Jackery explicitly says not to store its battery at 0%. The EcoFlow GLACIER instructions, by contrast, specify charging to 60% when the battery is below 1% after use. Use the exact recovery procedure for your model. If the station will not accept charge, becomes hot, displays a fault, or shows physical damage, stop and seek manufacturer support.

Capacity appears lower than before

Compare readings under similar conditions and loads; a displayed percentage is not a laboratory capacity test. Check for firmware or error messages and review whether the station has been stored or charged outside its permitted temperature range. A single reading does not establish a permanent loss. If the decline persists, provide the model, serial information, dates, and observed behavior to the manufacturer or authorized service provider.

Swelling, odor, liquid, smoke, or extreme heat

Stop charging and using the station, keep people away, and follow the manufacturer’s emergency instructions. Do not open, puncture, compress, or transport a visibly damaged battery casually. If smoke or fire is present, leave the area and contact local emergency services. Do not return a damaged unit to ordinary household storage.

Can you leave a power station in a car?

Long-term vehicle storage is a poor default. Jackery warns that vehicle cabins can exceed its recommended temperature range, particularly when parked in sun or during extreme weather. A car also exposes the station to vibration, dust, condensation, and accidental impact. If transport is necessary, secure the unit, protect the ports, prevent direct sunlight, and avoid leaving it unattended for extended periods. Before charging or using it, inspect it and bring it back within the model’s stated temperature range.

Using a station for critical or medical equipment

For oxygen equipment, refrigeration for medicines, communications systems, or any other critical load, read both manuals: the power station’s manual and the powered device manufacturer’s requirements. The EcoFlow E980 manual itself advises consulting the medical-equipment manufacturer. Confirm output waveform, voltage, runtime, startup surge, grounding, and any requirement for an uninterrupted transfer. A routine that preserves battery capacity does not by itself prove that the station is suitable for life-supporting or medically necessary equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understanding cycle-life claims

A cycle rating describes a manufacturer’s test or specification, not a guaranteed number of years for an individual owner. EcoFlow lists the E980 at 3,000 cycles to 80% or greater capacity. That figure belongs to the E980 and its stated capacity threshold; it is not an independently observed result and should not be applied to every LFP or portable power station.

One cycle is not necessarily one calendar use. Depending on the manufacturer’s test definition, several partial discharges may add up to a cycle. Real service life also depends on temperature, power level, storage conditions, charging behavior, age, and the amount of capacity the user considers acceptable. Treat a cycle rating as a model-specific reference point rather than a promise of a fixed lifespan.

Seasonal and emergency-reserve checklists

Before several months of storage

  • Read the current manual and confirm the storage percentage and interval.
  • Inspect the housing, ports, cables, display, and vents.
  • Charge or discharge only as the manual directs.
  • Record the date and displayed state of charge.
  • Choose a dry, clean location within the stated storage temperature range.
  • Keep the station away from water, humidity, direct sun, dust, and vehicle heat.
  • Set a reminder for the manufacturer’s inspection or maintenance interval.

Before an emergency or extended outing

  • Inspect for damage or swelling after storage.
  • Verify the station starts normally and shows no fault code.
  • Test the intended cable, charger, and load at a safe time.
  • Confirm that the expected load is within continuous and surge ratings.
  • Charge to the operating level recommended by the manual, rather than leaving it at an arbitrary percentage.

When replacement or service is the right answer

Routine care does not repair a failed cell, damaged enclosure, corroded connector, or battery-management fault. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service route when the station repeatedly refuses a permitted charge, shuts down under a normal load, reports a persistent fault, or shows physical damage. Do not buy a replacement merely to extend the life of a healthy station; replacing it is relevant only when the existing unit no longer meets your capacity, safety, or reliability needs.

Dispose of an end-of-life station through the battery and electronics recycling route required in your jurisdiction. Do not place a lithium-battery power station in ordinary household trash or leave it loose in a recycling bin.

A concise maintenance rule

Identify the exact model and chemistry, follow its current manual, keep the station dry and within its separate charge, discharge, and storage temperature limits, never store it empty unless a model-specific procedure says so, and inspect it on schedule. The Jackery and EcoFlow examples show why this discipline matters: their storage targets and routines differ, even though both products are portable power stations.
