When heating oil becomes more expensive, the fastest durable response is to need less heat: seal drafts, improve insulation where appropriate, use the thermostat and heating schedule deliberately, and check whether assistance or payment options are available. Start with your own bills, because the best action depends on your fuel mix, climate, building, equipment and daily routine.

Do not assume every higher energy bill is caused by oil. Space heating, electricity, gas, hot water and appliances can follow different price and usage patterns. Separate them before spending money on equipment.

Separate the oil problem from the rest of your energy bill

Oil prices directly affect a home that burns heating oil for space heat, but they do not automatically explain higher electricity, natural-gas or water-heating charges. A household may have an oil boiler and an electric water heater, for example, so reducing shower time can lower electricity use without reducing heating-oil consumption.

Start with comparable bills

Gather the latest bill and the bill for the same period last year. The Australian Government’s Reduce your energy bills guidance recommends this year-over-year comparison and focusing first on the largest energy uses. Record gallons of oil delivered, thermostat settings, heating degree conditions if your supplier provides them, electricity or gas usage, and the number of people at home. A one-month increase may reflect weather or a delivery timing difference rather than a permanent change in efficiency.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Also note whether a delivery was a top-up or a nearly full tank. A delivery invoice measures oil purchased, not necessarily oil burned during that exact billing period. Compare several similar periods when possible, and mark unusual absences, guests, open windows, equipment repairs and extreme weather. These notes help distinguish a price problem from a usage problem.

Map each use to its fuel

  • Heating oil: usually space heating, and sometimes domestic hot water.
  • Electricity: heat pumps, electric resistance heat, water heaters, appliances, lighting and electronics.
  • Natural gas or propane: furnaces, boilers, cooking or water heating where installed.
  • Water and sewer: often billed separately, but hot-water use also consumes the fuel that heats it.

After this map, estimate which use is both large and controllable. Draft sealing may address an oil-heated living space; a low-flow showerhead matters mainly when hot water is a significant part of your fuel or water bill.

Look for the largest practical opportunity first. A household with obvious window drafts may gain more from weather stripping than from replacing an efficient refrigerator. Conversely, if the envelope is already tight but hot-water use is high, shower and laundry changes may be the better first test. The point is to match the action to the meter and appliance that actually consume energy.

Reduce the amount of heat your home needs

Seal drafts around doors and windows

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) recommends caulking and weather stripping around windows and doors to reduce heating-oil consumption. These are different tasks: caulk seals a stationary joint, while weather stripping creates a compressible seal around a moving door or window sash.

Inspect on a windy or cold day. Look for visible daylight, moving curtains, loose trim and cracked sealant. Choose a product that matches the gap size, surface and movement: adhesive foam is easy to install but may wear faster, while compression or tubular seals suit some door jambs and operable windows. Clean and dry the surface, measure before buying, and make sure the door or window still latches without excessive force. Do not block required ventilation openings or combustion-air paths for heating equipment.

For a door, check the perimeter seal and the threshold separately. A replacement sweep may be needed at the bottom, while jamb weather stripping handles the sides and top. On windows, do not apply a product that prevents emergency opening where an exit window must remain operable. Remove failed material rather than layering new strips over debris, and inspect the seal after temperature changes.

Draft sealing has no universal dollar saving. Its value is highest where air leakage is obvious and the sealed opening borders a heated room. Recheck the seal after the first heating season.

Consider attic and wall insulation

EIA also identifies attic and wall insulation as ways to reduce heating-oil use. Insulation is a larger intervention than sealing a visible crack: the correct material, depth, moisture control and installation method depend on the building assembly and climate.

An attic assessment can reveal thin or displaced insulation, gaps around hatches and penetrations, or moisture problems. Wall insulation may require access through finished walls or exterior work, so compare the disruption and cost with the expected reduction in heat loss. Keep roof leaks, condensation and unsafe wiring issues ahead of adding insulation. A qualified local assessor or contractor can identify these conditions before material is installed.

Do not treat insulation as a substitute for air sealing. An attic hatch, pipe penetration or other opening can continue to leak even after insulation is added. At the same time, avoid covering vents designed to move air through the roof assembly, and follow local safety requirements around recessed fixtures, chimneys and wiring. The appropriate sequence and materials should come from an assessment of the particular building.

Use thermostat setbacks carefully

EIA recommends reducing thermostat settings. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), on its Why Energy Efficiency Matters page published in 2015 according to its search metadata, says turning a thermostat back 10% to 15% for eight hours can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling bills. That is a conditional potential, not a guaranteed result or a prediction for every oil-heated home.

The Australian Government’s guide gives a winter heating example of 18°C to 20°C and estimates that each extra degree can increase heating and cooling energy use by 5% to 10%. This is Australian government guidance, not a universal setting. Choose a temperature that keeps occupants safe and comfortable, especially children, older adults and people with medical conditions. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and avoid settings that create freezing, condensation or pipe risks.

Change one setting at a time and watch how the home responds. A setback that is comfortable in a well-insulated house may leave a drafty room cold, while a large morning recovery may be unsuitable for some systems. Keep written notes of the schedule and indoor conditions so you can compare the next similar billing period rather than judging the change from a single cold day.

A programmable thermostat can automate a schedule, but compatibility matters. Some oil boilers use low-voltage controls; others have different wiring, zone valves or proprietary interfaces. Confirm the voltage, control type, number of heating zones and any minimum operating requirements before purchasing or installing a thermostat. When uncertain, ask a qualified heating technician rather than connecting an incompatible control.

Heat occupied rooms, not empty space

The Australian Government suggests heating only rooms in use and using thicker bedding so heating does not remain on overnight. Treat this as an option to evaluate, not a universal instruction. Closing vents or radiators in unused rooms can upset airflow, water balance or boiler operation in some systems. Never block a radiator, baseboard, return grille or combustion-air opening without checking the system design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use door curtains, internal doors and bedding to manage comfort, but keep rooms dry and above temperatures that could damage plumbing or building materials. If a room contains water pipes, pets or sensitive equipment, its minimum safe temperature may be higher than a bedroom’s preferred overnight temperature.

In a zoned system, use the existing zone controls rather than improvising by closing every supply outlet. Ask a technician how the boiler, circulator and zone valves are intended to operate. In a single-zone home, room-by-room reductions may have little effect if the boiler still responds to one central thermostat, and they can make the remaining occupied area less comfortable.

Reduce hot-water and appliance demand

Check whether hot water is an oil cost

Hot water may be heated by the same oil boiler, by electricity, gas or another system. Identify the appliance before applying an oil-saving measure. The Australian Government’s 5 simple ideas to save energy guide says hot water is responsible for around 25% of the average household energy bill. That figure is Australian household context and should not be treated as a constant for homes in other countries, climates or fuel systems.

If your water heater is oil-fired, shorter showers, fixing hot-water leaks and avoiding unnecessary reheating can reduce oil demand. If it is electric or gas-fired, the action may lower a different fuel bill instead. Low-flow showerheads can reduce hot-water volume, but check local flow requirements, pressure, and whether the fixture works properly with your water heater and household needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check for a dripping hot-water tap, a leaking relief line or a pipe that stays warm when no one is using water. Those signs can indicate wasted heated water or a maintenance issue. Do not change temperature controls or safety devices without following the heater manufacturer’s instructions or obtaining qualified service.

Run full laundry and dishwasher loads

The Australian guidance recommends running full laundry and dishwasher loads. This reduces the number of heating, filling and drying cycles. Use the appliance’s efficient or cold-water settings when they meet hygiene requirements, and avoid assuming that a low-temperature cycle is suitable for every medical, household or sanitation need.

Air-drying clothes or dishes can reduce a drying load where practical, but account for indoor moisture and ventilation. If drying indoors causes condensation, mold or damp materials, use a safer method instead. The useful comparison is the energy avoided without creating a building or health problem.

Target the biggest electrical loads

Once space heating is addressed, inspect electric water heating, clothes drying, refrigeration, cooking and supplemental heaters. A portable electric heater can make one room feel warmer while adding a large electrical load; compare its operating cost with reducing drafts or improving the main heating system. The correct priority depends on your measured usage, not on a generic appliance list.

Shorter showers or low-flow showerhead Hot-water fuel and water use Low to moderate Relevant only to the household’s water-heating system; verify pressure and fixture suitability Not stated; Australian guide gives hot water as around 25% of an average household energy bill

Use upfront cost, effort, speed of relief and compatibility as decision criteria. A low-cost strip that stops a clear draft may be sensible when cash is tight, while insulation may be more disruptive but address a larger loss. A thermostat purchase is worthwhile only if it works with the heating controls. A showerhead is most relevant when the water heater, rather than the oil boiler, drives the hot-water cost. Local rebates, tariffs and weatherization services can change the calculation, so confirm current terms with the responsible agency or supplier.

Make heating-oil purchases and payment terms work for you

Ask about fill timing

EIA says heating-oil consumers may arrange tank fills in late summer or early fall, when prices are generally lower. The page does not establish a current price, a guaranteed seasonal difference or a fixed saving, and its historical price information should be treated as dated because the page was last updated October 13, 2023. Ask local suppliers for current quotes, delivery fees, minimum quantities and payment deadlines before scheduling a fill.

Request the quote in writing and check whether it is for a specific number of gallons, a capped price or a market-linked price. Ask whether emergency delivery costs more and whether the supplier requires a minimum tank level. A lower quoted fuel price can be offset by a delivery fee, finance charge or contract requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not let a tank run dangerously low while waiting for a preferred price. Follow your equipment and supplier’s minimum-level guidance, and account for storage capacity, weather, cash flow and the risk that future prices move in the opposite direction.

Evaluate budget plans and fixed-price protection

EIA notes that some dealers may offer budget plans or fixed-price protection. These are contract options, not guaranteed savings. Compare the formula used to calculate monthly payments, contract length, minimum purchase, cancellation terms, delivery priority, financing charges and what happens if market prices fall. A level monthly payment can make budgeting easier without reducing the total cost of oil.

Ask when the plan is reconciled. Some arrangements collect an estimated monthly amount and later bill or credit the difference; the contract should explain that adjustment. Fixed-price protection can limit exposure to rising prices but may cost more than buying at a lower market price. Keep the contract, invoices and delivery records together so you can check whether charges match the agreed terms.

Find assistance and weatherization help

U.S. households: check LIHEAP and state programs

EIA directs U.S. heating-oil consumers to federal and state assistance, including the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and to weatherization assistance. Eligibility, funding, application windows and covered fuels vary by state and can change. Use current information from your state or local administering agency; do not assume that qualifying for one program qualifies you for another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When contacting an agency, ask whether it offers crisis benefits, regular bill assistance, furnace or boiler repair, fuel delivery, arrearage help, or weatherization. Gather identification, income records, household size, current bills, account numbers and proof of heating responsibility if the program requests them. Apply before an emergency when possible, because funds and appointment slots may be limited.

If heat is at risk of being disconnected or the tank is nearly empty, say so clearly when you call and ask what emergency process applies. Keep confirmation numbers and deadlines. An application does not necessarily stop a shutoff or guarantee fuel delivery, so follow the agency’s instructions and contact the supplier about any required documentation.

Outside the United States

LIHEAP and the EIA programs are U.S.-specific. Elsewhere, search your national, state, provincial or municipal energy department for current bill support, fuel-payment assistance and home-weatherization schemes. Eligibility and tariff rules are local; a rebate available in one jurisdiction may not exist across a border.

A practical sequence for the next month

  1. Today: collect the latest and prior-year bills, list each fuel and end use, and note thermostat schedules and rooms that are routinely unoccupied.
  2. This week: inspect door and window joints, attic access panels and obvious pipe or duct penetrations. Seal suitable drafts without covering vents or combustion-air openings.
  3. Before changing controls: identify the boiler or furnace control type, zones and wiring. Confirm thermostat compatibility and choose a setback that meets household health and comfort needs.
  4. During the next billing period: test one change at a time where practical, such as a schedule adjustment or full-load laundry routine, and compare usage over a similar period rather than relying on one day’s weather.
  5. Before the next oil delivery: request current local quotes, ask about delivery timing and payment terms, and check whether an assistance or weatherization application is open.
  6. Before major insulation work: address leaks, moisture and unsafe electrical conditions, then obtain an assessment suited to the building and climate.

Pitfalls that can erase the benefit

  • Chasing a product instead of a loss: buying a thermostat or showerhead before identifying the fuel and end use may shift consumption without lowering the relevant bill.
  • Using a universal temperature rule: published examples are jurisdiction-specific and conditional; comfort, health and building safety come first.
  • Sealing ventilation: weatherproofing must not remove required combustion air or indoor-air ventilation.
  • Ignoring system balance: closing vents or radiators can create cold pipes, pressure problems or uneven heating in some systems.
  • Treating a payment plan as a discount: budget billing changes payment timing; fixed-price contracts transfer price risk according to their terms.
  • Assuming assistance is automatic: programs have local eligibility rules, deadlines and funding limits, so verify them with the administering agency.
  • Comparing unlike periods: a delivery month, a mild winter month and a period with different occupancy can make a change look larger or smaller than it is.
  • Doing major work without an assessment: insulation installed over moisture, leaks or unsafe wiring can create a building problem instead of solving one.

The most defensible response to rising oil prices is a measured sequence: establish which fuel is driving the increase, reduce avoidable heat loss, adjust controls without compromising health or equipment, then pursue local purchasing and assistance options. That approach lowers demand first and limits the risk of spending on a measure that does not fit your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I lower my heating-oil bill quickly?

Start by comparing the current bill with the same period last year, then inspect and seal obvious door and window drafts. Review thermostat settings and schedules without compromising health, freeze protection or equipment requirements. Ask local suppliers about current delivery quotes and payment terms, and check official assistance if paying is difficult.

Does turning down the thermostat really save money?

The U.S. Department of Energy says setting the thermostat back 10% to 15% for eight hours can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling bills, but that is a conditional potential, not a guarantee. The suitable setting depends on the occupants, building, weather and heating system.

Should I buy a programmable thermostat for an oil boiler?

Only after confirming compatibility. Check the boiler’s voltage, control type, number of zones and minimum operating requirements. Some systems use different wiring or proprietary interfaces; a heating technician can verify the control before installation.

Is a low-flow showerhead an oil-saving purchase?

It can reduce hot-water demand, but only affects heating oil if the household’s water heater uses oil. If water is heated by electricity or gas, the primary effect is on that fuel and possibly the water bill. Check pressure, local flow rules and fixture suitability first.

When should I order heating oil?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says consumers may arrange fills in late summer or early fall, when prices are generally lower. That is a general observation, not a current guaranteed discount. Compare local quotes, fees, contract terms and storage needs, and do not let the tank reach an unsafe level while waiting.

What help is available if I cannot afford heating oil?

In the United States, EIA directs households to LIHEAP, state programs and weatherization assistance. Eligibility, funding and application windows vary, so contact the current state or local administering agency. Outside the United States, check the relevant national, regional or municipal energy department; U.S. programs do not apply automatically elsewhere.

The Bottom Line

Separate heating oil from other energy uses, seal the losses you can see, use thermostat setbacks and room schedules cautiously, and verify every purchase or assistance option locally. The right measure is the one that fits your fuel, building, equipment, health needs and budget.
