You can cut electricity use without buying new appliances by targeting the loads you control most: lighting, heating and cooling, standby electronics, air leakage, and water heating. Start by reviewing your bills, then change one high-use area at a time so you can see which actions matter in your home. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) advises treating its percentage and dollar figures as general estimates, not promises; weather, construction, schedules, equipment, fuel type, and utility rates determine your result.

The practical sequence is simple: measure, adjust controls, maintain what you already own, seal manageable drafts, and verify the effect on a later bill. Most steps are reversible and suitable for renters, but permanent changes and any work on ducts or wiring require permission or a qualified professional.

1. Find your largest controllable use first

Electricity savings are usually largest where a device runs for long periods or where a small setting affects a large load. Before buying anything, collect several recent utility bills and separate electricity charges from gas, oil, or other fuel charges. Note seasonal changes and look for unusual spikes. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) recommends targeting the largest energy consumer or the largest part of the bill rather than assuming that a popular tip will be the best one for every home.

Use a short baseline

  1. Write down the billing period, electricity usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh), and total electric charge for at least two representative bills.
  2. Record when heating or cooling is operating, how many people are home, and any unusual event such as extreme weather or guests.
  3. Choose one change—such as an HVAC schedule or replacing the most-used incandescent bulbs—and leave other habits as consistent as practical.
  4. Compare a later bill with a similar season. A single bill cannot prove that one action caused a particular change.

A professional or utility-sponsored home energy audit can reveal insulation, duct, and air-leak problems that are hard to see. If an audit is not available, walk through the home and identify lights that stay on for hours, rooms with drafts, electronics that remain warm while “off,” and thermostats that heat or cool an empty home.

2. Replace only the lights that run the longest

Lighting is an easy place to reduce electricity without changing a fixture. DOE’s July 2023 renter guidance says LED bulbs use up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last much longer. “Up to” is a maximum comparison, not a guaranteed whole-home or bill reduction: the result depends on the old bulb’s wattage, the LED’s wattage, and how many hours the light operates.

  • Eye Comfort & Easy Installation: The no-flicker design ensures smooth, strain-free lighting, while the standard E26 base allows for quick installation. Enjoy a bright, steady glow that enhances any environment.

Prioritize by operating time

Begin with bulbs or fixtures used for several hours each day—living-room lamps, kitchen lights, exterior security lights, and work areas. A rarely used closet bulb may deliver little practical benefit even if its technology is less efficient. Replace additional bulbs as they fail or as your baseline shows that lighting is a meaningful part of usage.

Check compatibility before installation

  • Base: Match the screw or pin base to the existing socket.
  • Brightness: Compare lumens, not just watts, so the room remains adequately lit.
  • Color temperature: Choose a comfortable appearance for the room; warm light and cooler task light serve different purposes.
  • Fixture rating: Enclosed fixtures, damp locations, and recessed housings may require LEDs specifically rated for those conditions.
  • Dimmers and controls: Use a dimmable LED with a compatible dimmer. Flicker, buzzing, or a narrow dimming range indicates a mismatch.

DOE’s renter guidance also states that the average household can save more than $200 per year with LED lighting. DOE presents that as a general estimate on its renters page (the inspected page does not show a publication date); it does not predict what your household will save. Do not add this estimate to the heating or water-heating figures below, because they describe different populations and energy uses.

3. Use thermostat schedules and maintain airflow

Heating and cooling can dominate a bill because the equipment runs for hours. Use the thermostat you already have: program a schedule if it supports one, or adjust the setting manually when people leave and when everyone is asleep. Keep the change realistic enough that occupants will follow it consistently.

Understand the setback estimate

DOE’s renter guidance says a 7–10°F setback for eight hours per day may save as much as 10% on heating. This is an estimate for heating energy, not a promise of a 10% reduction in total electricity or utility costs. Results depend on the home’s insulation and leakage, the heating system, outdoor weather, the starting temperature, and how long the setback lasts. If a heat pump, hydronic system, or other equipment has manufacturer-specific control guidance, follow that guidance rather than assuming every thermostat strategy is equivalent.

Keep filters and airflow in good condition

Clean or replace HVAC filters on the schedule recommended for your equipment and household conditions. A loaded filter restricts airflow and can make the system work harder or reduce comfort. Mark the next inspection date on a calendar; homes with pets, construction dust, or heavy occupancy may need more frequent attention than the package interval. Turn off power according to the equipment instructions before servicing a removable filter.

Use window coverings deliberately

Close blinds, shades, or curtains to block direct summer sun. In winter, open coverings when sunlight can provide useful warmth and close them when darkness or cold glass increases heat loss. Keep coverings clear of supply and return vents, heaters, and equipment that must dissipate heat.

4. Cut standby use without disabling essential equipment

Standby power is electricity consumed by equipment connected to mains power even when it appears to be off. Displays, remote-control receivers, network connections, chargers, and power-management circuits can remain active. DOE technical guidance describes IEC 62301 as a procedure for measuring standby and other low-power modes, but the existence of standby power does not mean every device or household has a large avoidable loss.

Identify suitable loads

Look for groups of devices that are used together and do not need power while the household is asleep or away: for example, a display and peripheral equipment in a guest-room entertainment area. A switched power strip or smart plug can make disconnection convenient. Check the strip or plug’s voltage, current, and wattage ratings against the connected load, and follow the device manufacturer’s instructions.

Keep required devices powered

Do not place medical equipment, life-safety systems, refrigeration that must remain on, security systems, network equipment needed for monitoring, or any device that requires continuous power on a schedule you might trigger accidentally. If a device loses settings or performs a lengthy restart after power is removed, the inconvenience can outweigh uncertain savings. A smart plug is a control, not a guarantee of a particular reduction.

Measure before buying controls

If you can borrow or safely use a plug-in electricity meter, measure a device in its normal “off” state for a day or longer. Otherwise, use the manufacturer’s standby specification as an indication rather than a household savings calculation. Prioritize a load that is both measurable and safe to disconnect; do not buy several controls before confirming that the first one changes your usage.

5. Seal manageable drafts

Air leaks increase heating and cooling demand by allowing conditioned air out and outdoor air in. DOE recommends caulking or weatherstripping appropriate gaps and joints. Weatherstripping is intended for movable joints around doors and windows, where the seal compresses as the door or sash closes.

Locate the leak

  • Inspect the perimeter of exterior doors and operable windows for visible gaps, daylight, or a loose seal.
  • On a windy day, feel for moving air around the frame rather than around the moving panel itself.
  • Check that a door closes and latches correctly before adding material; a misaligned door may need adjustment first.
  • Do not block required ventilation openings, combustion-air supplies, drains, or weep holes.

Choose reversible work when renting

Removable draft stoppers and temporary seals can reduce leakage without drilling or permanently altering a frame. Ask the landlord or property manager before applying adhesive products, replacing weatherstripping, caulking, or changing a door sweep. Owners should select a product suited to the gap size and surface and confirm that the door or window still operates safely.

Know when to call a professional

DOE notes that some air-sealing work, especially around ducts, is better handled by professionals. Ducts in attics, crawlspaces, or other difficult locations can involve insulation, combustion safety, electrical hazards, or contaminants. Do not open sealed HVAC components or apply materials near flues and heat-producing equipment without qualified advice.

6. Manage water-heater settings carefully

DOE’s FEMP checklist identifies water heating as roughly 14%–25% of energy consumed in a home. That range is a general household estimate and includes energy sources beyond electricity, so it is not a prediction of your electric bill. A temperature adjustment can affect energy use, comfort, sanitation, and scald risk; treat it as a household-safety decision as well as a conservation step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider the 120°F guidance

FEMP lists a 120°F water-heater setting as a daily conservation measure. Check the actual delivered temperature at a tap with an appropriate thermometer rather than assuming the dial is exact, and follow the water heater’s instructions. Allow time for the tank and pipes to stabilize before judging the result.

Account for health-related exceptions

DOE’s renter guidance says people with a compromised immune system or chronic respiratory disease may need to keep the water heater at 140°F. Do not apply 120°F or 140°F universally. Discuss the appropriate setting with a qualified healthcare professional when a household member has such a condition, use anti-scald protection where appropriate, and follow applicable public-health and equipment guidance. Children and older adults can be particularly vulnerable to burns.

Renter and equipment limits

Some rentals restrict access to the heater or require maintenance staff to make adjustments. Electric tanks, heat-pump water heaters, instantaneous systems, and boilers have different controls and procedures. If the control is not clearly labeled, do not remove covers or work near energized wiring; request service instead.

7. Compare actions by fit, not by a universal ranking

DOE guidance supports comparing LEDs, thermostat and filter habits, standby-load controls, and weatherstripping, but it does not establish one savings ranking that applies to every home. Use the following framework to decide what to do next.

8. A practical 30-day plan

Days 1–3: establish the baseline

  1. Gather recent electric bills and record kWh, billing dates, and weather notes.
  2. List rooms and devices that run for long periods, including lights, HVAC, and always-connected electronics.
  3. Check your lease or building rules before making changes.

Days 4–10: take the low-risk control steps

  1. Program or manually adjust the thermostat for sleeping and away periods.
  2. Inspect the HVAC filter and replace or clean it as the equipment instructions require.
  3. Close or open window coverings according to sun and outdoor temperature.
  4. Replace the most-used incandescent bulbs after checking compatibility.

Days 11–20: address standby and drafts

  1. Identify one nonessential group of electronics that can be disconnected safely.
  2. Use a rated switched strip or smart plug only after confirming that no essential device is connected.
  3. Inspect exterior doors and operable windows for drafts.
  4. Install a reversible draft stopper or approved weatherstripping where permitted.

Days 21–30: review water heating and results

  1. Confirm whether you are permitted to adjust the water heater and identify its type.
  2. Consider the 120°F FEMP guidance only after accounting for health needs, sanitation, scald prevention, and manufacturer instructions.
  3. Compare your next usage reading or bill with a similar period, noting weather and occupancy.
  4. Keep the measures that improved comfort or usage and remove controls that create safety, reliability, or access problems.

9. Common mistakes and how to correct them

Adding estimates together

The LED, thermostat, and water-heating figures describe different scopes and conditions. They are not stackable percentages, and the $200 lighting estimate is not a promise for an individual household. Use your own bills or measured loads to judge the combined effect.

Replacing every bulb at once

Bulk replacement can waste money when bulbs are rarely used or incompatible with a fixture. Start with high-use locations and confirm the light quality before expanding.

Using a smart plug on the wrong device

Unexpected shutdowns can disable monitoring, reset settings, or create a safety risk. Keep required equipment continuously powered and verify the control’s rating.

Sealing a vent or combustion opening

Draft reduction must not compromise ventilation or combustion safety. Seal movable door and window joints, not required openings, and obtain professional help for ducts or complex building areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing a water-heater setting without checking health needs

A lower setting may be inappropriate for some households, while a higher setting increases scald risk. Use the equipment instructions and qualified health or building guidance rather than a universal rule.

Judging success from one unusual bill

Weather, occupancy, billing-cycle length, and utility rates can overwhelm a small efficiency change. Compare similar periods and change one major behavior at a time when possible.

10. The evidence behind the approach

DOE’s renter guidance emphasizes do-it-yourself measures that can reduce a carbon footprint or utility bills without replacing appliances. In a July 19, 2023 article, DOE Communications Specialist Vivien Bui wrote: “Whether you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint or lower your utility bills, there are plenty of do-it-yourself (DIY) tips and tricks that can help you become an energy-efficient, cost-saving renter.” The practical limitation is important: these are actions and general estimates, not a household-specific forecast.

For the most defensible decision, combine DOE’s guidance with your own bill history, an audit when available, equipment instructions, and the permissions that apply to your home. That approach keeps the work inexpensive and reversible while directing effort toward the uses that actually matter in your building.
