Efficient DMZ looting is selective, not exhaustive: enter with one objective, pick up only items that advance that objective or a planned recipe, reserve space for survival and extraction, then sort everything immediately after a successful deployment. In the announced Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, this matters because unsecured backpack items are lost when an exfil fails.
Version warning: the official Modern Warfare 4 DMZ guide dated October 9, 2026 describes a new system scheduled for Early Access on October 20, 2026 for eligible digital pre-purchasers, with timing and platform availability subject to change. It is not interchangeable with the 2022–2023 Warzone 2.0 DMZ rules. The instructions below identify which edition each mechanic belongs to.

Start by identifying your DMZ edition
“DMZ” can refer to two materially different games. Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is the current announced edition, built around persistent progression, crafting, objectives, open-world combat and extraction. Its official Forward Operating Base guide explains the backpack, Stash, 3D Printer and resource systems: Call of Duty’s October 9, 2026 DMZ guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWarzone 2.0 DMZ was the earlier mode. Its backpack, Shops and special backpack variants came from a different ruleset. If you are playing that legacy version, use the historical section near the end rather than assuming a Modern Warfare 4 mechanic exists there.

The rule that prevents junk-filled backpacks
Before picking up anything, ask four questions:
- Does it advance the mission or contract I am actually pursuing?
- Is it required by a recipe, pinned objective or station upgrade?
- Is it a resource handled automatically, or a discrete ingredient that occupies a carried-item slot?
- Would keeping it justify the time and exposure needed to reach extraction?
If the answer to all four is no, leave the item. A full backpack is not evidence of a successful run; an extracted objective, a useful ingredient and a surviving operator are.
Understand what takes space in Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
The current official guide separates automatically processed resources from physical ingredients and other carried items. That distinction is the foundation of efficient looting.
| Category | How the official guide describes it | What to do during a deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Automatically processed resources | Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals are automatically broken down and do not consume Stash slots. | Do not treat these like ordinary loose ingredients. Confirm their role in the 3D Printer or upgrade interface, then keep pursuing the actual objective instead of collecting unrelated objects. |
| Discrete 3D Printer ingredients | Recipe ingredients remain as items in the Backpack during a deployment and can be moved to the Stash after successful extraction. | Pick them up only when they are pinned, needed for a planned recipe or useful to a clearly defined upgrade. |
| Weapons, equipment and other items | These occupy the relevant backpack or loadout spaces according to the item and backpack configuration. | Keep the fighting and healing tools required to survive the route; discard duplicates before they crowd out a needed ingredient. |
| Secure Slot contents | Secure Slots are associated with upgraded backpacks in the described edition. | Use them for items whose loss would invalidate a long objective, but verify the exact live rules for your backpack. |
The announced Basic Pack has eight available slots. The initial Stash is described as holding 40 items and 12 weapons. These are system counts from the October 9 guide, not performance statistics, and they should be rechecked if the live game changes them. The guide mentions stack sizes and backpack-specific slots but does not publish a universal stack-size table; inspect the item tooltip in your build rather than relying on a legacy chart.
Plan the run before infil
Choose one primary conversion goal
Write down the result you want from the deployment: finish a mission step, obtain ingredients for a named recipe, gather materials for an upgrade or recover a specific weapon or piece of equipment. A route that tries to complete all four usually produces low-value duplicates and unnecessary exposure.
Use the 3D Printer menu as your shopping list
The Modern Warfare 4 guide says the 3D Printer interface shows required ingredients and lets you track or pin items. Pin only the recipe you intend to work on this run. A pinned ingredient has a clear reason to occupy a slot; an unplanned object does not.
Reserve capacity before leaving
Count the spaces needed for your weapon, ammunition, healing and tactical equipment, then reserve at least one flexible slot for an unexpected mission item. Do not plan to fill every available space with ingredients. A reserve gives you room to replace a weak item, carry a required objective object or reorganize after a fight.
Set an extraction fallback
Pick the nearest reasonable exfil direction before you begin searching. If the primary route becomes crowded or your operator is damaged, switch to the fallback instead of extending the run for one more low-priority container.

Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 deep dive gives broad location guidance rather than guaranteed spawn tables. It identifies police stations as sources of combat and tactical gear, hospitals as places to look for scarce medical supplies and residential districts as areas associated with crafting materials: the official Modern Warfare 4 DMZ deep dive. Treat those descriptions as route priorities, not promises that a particular item will appear in every visit.

| Your goal | Logical first search area | How to avoid wasting slots |
|---|---|---|
| Combat or tactical equipment | Police-station areas | Take only equipment that improves the current fight or replaces a weaker item. Leave duplicates once your combat needs are covered. |
| Medical recovery or a medical objective | Hospital areas | Prioritize the named medical requirement and enough healing to survive the exit. Do not remain solely because additional containers might contain another medical item. |
| Crafting materials | Residential districts | Search with the pinned recipe visible. Stop when the required ingredients are secured or when the route becomes more dangerous than the remaining benefit. |
Use a repeatable in-deployment looting loop
- Check the objective and pins. Open the mission or 3D Printer view before opening containers. This prevents a route built around a recipe you are not currently pursuing.
- Classify the item before taking it. Decide whether it is an automatic resource, a pinned ingredient, a survival tool, a weapon upgrade or an unplanned duplicate. Classification takes less time than sorting a full pack later.
- Take the highest-consequence item first. A mission-critical object or pinned ingredient outranks a generic valuable whose purpose is unclear. If two items compete for a slot, keep the one that removes a current blocker.
- Keep a survival minimum. Retain the ammunition, healing and tactical equipment needed for the next fight and extraction. Selling or discarding useful survival gear for a speculative pickup is not efficient.
- Reassess after every major fight. Combat can change your needs. Replace damaged or empty equipment, discard duplicates and restore your reserved slot before entering another building.
- Stop when the run has converted. Once the mission step is complete or the recipe requirement is met, begin the extraction route. Additional loot is optional upside, while additional time creates more opportunities for failure.
Sort items with a keep, use, sell or discard decision
The FOB guide specifically recommends reviewing items after a successful deployment and deciding whether to keep, sell, discard or use them for crafting. It does not establish universal current cash values, so do not copy a value from an old guide or assume that every valuable has the same purpose.
Keep
Keep an item when it is required by an active mission, a pinned recipe, a planned upgrade or a clear future objective that you have deliberately chosen. Move retained ingredients into the Stash after extraction so the next operator can use them.
Use
Use an item when consuming it immediately advances the current deployment: craft the planned object, repair or improve the loadout where the game allows it, or complete the objective that brought you into the zone. Do not carry an item through an entire deployment merely because it might be useful later if the interface gives you a way to use it now.
Sell
Sell only when the live edition provides a sale action and the item is not needed for a recipe, mission or upgrade. Check the current item description or station interface; the Modern Warfare 4 guide does not provide a reliable cash-value list.
Discard
Discard duplicates, obsolete equipment and unplanned ingredients when they block a mission-critical pickup or your extraction reserve. Discarding early is safer than attempting to sort a full pack while exposed.
Understand extraction risk before taking another detour
The Modern Warfare 4 FOB guide states that backpack items outside Secure Slots are lost if exfil fails. That makes every optional container a risk decision, not free progress. A useful rule is to compare the remaining objective value with three costs: time in the zone, exposure to AI or rival Operators and the amount of unsecured progress you would lose on failure.
| Situation | Recommended decision |
|---|---|
| The pinned ingredient or mission item is secured and the pack contains unsecured progress | Leave on the planned extraction route. |
| You are missing one required item and a nearby search area matches the official location guidance | Make one controlled search, then return to extraction rather than expanding the route indefinitely. |
| Your operator is damaged, supplies are low or rival activity is increasing | Abandon optional loot. Survival and extraction now have greater value than another container. |
| The item is a duplicate with no active use | Leave it, even if the backpack has an empty slot. Empty capacity is useful insurance. |
Clean the Stash after every successful deployment
Do not wait until the Stash is full. The post-exfil routine should take place before the next infil:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Move retained discrete ingredients from the Backpack into the Stash.
- Use any item that completes a planned recipe or upgrade.
- Mark items for sale only after checking that no active objective needs them.
- Discard duplicates and obsolete gear.
- Confirm that the next operator’s loadout still has the required weapons, healing and tactical tools.
The official FOB guide describes Stash contents and relevant resources as shared across Active Duty Operators in this edition. That means cleanup benefits the whole operator roster: one character does not need to carry duplicates just because another character collected them.

Choose a backpack for the job, not for maximum clutter
The current guide describes a Basic Pack, backpack-specific slots and Secure Slots on upgraded backpacks, but it does not publish a complete tested comparison of every backpack configuration. Use these confirmed decision axes:
- Usable capacity: how many ordinary item slots you can actually use after reserving weapons and survival gear.
- Stack behavior: how many copies of a particular item combine in one slot in your live build. Exact universal values are not stated in the guide.
- Dedicated spaces: whether the backpack gives special room for resources, weapons or secure items.
- Objective usefulness: whether the extra room helps you carry the particular ingredients or mission objects you need.
- Persistence: which items survive a failed exfil under the backpack’s current Secure Slot rules.
For a short mission run, the Basic Pack’s eight-slot limit encourages strict prioritization. For a recipe-heavy deployment, an upgraded backpack may be valuable because of its added configuration or Secure Slots, but the benefit depends on the actual recipe and route. More capacity is not a reason to collect low-value items.
Three practical route patterns
Mission-first route
Use this when a contract or objective has a defined location. Travel directly to the objective, collect only the tools required to survive it, complete the step and extract. Search additional buildings only if the mission itself leaves you with a specific pinned requirement.

Crafting sweep
Use the 3D Printer pin list to select one target ingredient set. Start in the broad area associated with that material, such as residential districts for crafting supplies, and stop as soon as the recipe requirement is met. Keep the extraction path shorter than the next speculative search.
Recovery run
Use this after a failed or costly deployment. Carry a conservative loadout, search only the safest portion of the route, replace essential survival tools and leave. A recovery run should rebuild the ability to attempt a larger objective, not become an improvised full-map loot tour.

Example: a pinned crafting recipe
You enter with a recipe pinned in the 3D Printer. Your first residential search produces one required ingredient, a duplicate ingredient with no current use and a piece of equipment that would replace a weaker item. Keep the required ingredient, replace the weaker equipment, leave the duplicate and begin evaluating the extraction route. The correct result is not the largest possible pile; it is the recipe progress plus a survivable loadout.
Example: a medical objective
You need a medical item and approach a hospital area, which the official deep dive identifies as a place for scarce medical supplies. Search the relevant rooms quickly, take the named requirement and enough healing to survive the exit, then leave. If the item is found but the operator is injured or rival activity rises, staying for additional medical loot increases the value at risk without advancing the objective.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Example: combat preparation
You need tactical equipment for a fight and route toward a police-station area, which the official overview associates with combat and tactical gear. Take the equipment that fills a real gap in your loadout. Once that gap is closed, stop collecting duplicates and preserve a slot for extraction or a mission object.

Fix the most common looting failures
“My backpack fills before I find the required item.”
Begin each run with the recipe or mission visible, reserve a flexible slot and classify every pickup before taking it. If the pack is already full, discard the lowest-priority duplicate immediately rather than carrying it to the next building.
“I cannot tell whether an ingredient is worth keeping.”
Check the 3D Printer and objective interfaces. Keep the item only when it is pinned, required or part of a deliberately chosen upgrade. If the current game does not show a use, do not invent one from a legacy list.
“I extracted with a full Stash of things I never use.”
Apply the post-exfil keep, use, sell or discard pass every time. Shared Stash space is finite, so duplicates consume room that could hold a future mission ingredient. The described initial Stash capacity is 40 items and 12 weapons.
“I followed an old DMZ backpack guide and the advice failed.”
Check the edition and publication date. Secure Backpacks, Scavenger Backpacks, Shops and item behavior from Warzone 2.0 are historical mechanics, not proof of how Modern Warfare 4 DMZ works.
“I keep dying while searching for one more item.”
Set a hard stop before infil: objective complete, required ingredient found, reserve slot preserved or operator risk becomes unacceptable. When any stop condition is met, extract. The value of unsecured loot is zero if the exfil fails and the item is lost.
What changes in historical Warzone 2.0 DMZ
If you mean the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ, Microsoft’s 2022 tactical guide describes a backpack carrying cash, ammunition, weapons, equipment and valuables; dying removed non-permanent backpack items; players exfiltrated through marked points; and Shops sold valuables, weapons and equipment for cash: Xbox Wire’s Warzone 2.0 DMZ overview.
Activision’s April 2023 Season 03 overview describes two additional historical variants. Secure Backpacks preserved specified items, while Scavenger Backpacks added item slots at the cost of a third weapon slot: the Season 03 DMZ overview. Those details should be applied only to that legacy edition. They do not establish the capacities, recipes, slot rules or sale values of Modern Warfare 4 DMZ.
