Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
To log in to Linux with PuTTY as a normal user, connect to the server over SSH, enter the server-side non-root username at the login as: prompt (or save it under Connection > Data > Auto-login username), and then authenticate with that account’s password or private key. The username is the account on the remote Linux or Unix server—not your Windows username—and you do not need to log in as root simply because you are performing administration.
This guide explains how to set the PuTTY username, use password or public-key authentication, correct a mistyped account, fix rejected keys, and run administrative commands through the server’s approved privilege-escalation policy after you connect.

PuTTY is an SSH client. It authenticates the account name you provide on the remote server. If your administrator created an account called alex, entering alex logs you in as that account; entering root attempts an entirely different login. Your local Windows account name has no bearing on the SSH account unless the server administrator deliberately created matching names.
A successful non-root session starts with the permissions assigned to that account. You can read files, run programs, or administer services only where the account’s server policy allows it. If the account is permitted to use sudo, you can request elevated privileges for specific commands after logging in. PuTTY itself does not grant root access and does not define which commands a particular Linux distribution permits through sudo.

Information to obtain before opening PuTTY
Have all of the following ready. If any item is unknown, ask the server administrator rather than guessing.
- Server address: the server hostname or IP address.
- SSH port: normally
22, unless the administrator supplied another port. - Remote account name: the intended non-root Linux or Unix username.
- Authentication method: either that account’s password or an approved private key.
- Host-key procedure: know how your organization verifies a server’s SSH host key before accepting it.
The account must exist on the remote server and be allowed to use SSH. A correct PuTTY setting cannot overcome a server policy that disables SSH for the account.

How to log in with a non-root username in PuTTY
1. Open PuTTY and configure the session
- Start PuTTY and remain on the Session screen.
- Enter the server hostname or IP address in Host Name (or IP address).
- Enter the supplied SSH port. Use
22only when that is the server’s configured port or the administrator has not specified a different one. - Select SSH as the connection type.
- Choose Open to start the connection.
PuTTY will establish the SSH connection and may display a host-key warning the first time. Compare the presented key with the fingerprint or verification process required by your organization. Accept it only when you are satisfied that you are connecting to the intended server. A host key identifies the server; it is separate from the username and from the user’s password or private key.
2. Supply the remote username
You can enter the non-root username interactively or prefill it for the session.
Interactive entry at login as:
When PuTTY displays login as:, type the account name supplied by the administrator and press Enter. Type it exactly, including capitalization where the server distinguishes uppercase and lowercase characters. Do not enter your Windows account name unless it is also the intended remote account.
“If you are using SSH, be careful not to type your username wrongly, because you will not have a chance to correct it after you press Return; many SSH servers do not permit you to make two login attempts using different usernames.” — PuTTY getting-started documentation
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
If you realize that the name was wrong after pressing Enter, close the PuTTY window and start a new session. Do not expect to change the account by typing another name at a later prompt; many SSH servers reject a second username attempt in the same connection.

Prefill the username in PuTTY
- Return to PuTTY’s Session screen.
- In the category tree, open Connection, then select Data.
- Enter the remote account name in Auto-login username.
- Return to Session and open the connection, or save the session if you want to reuse these settings.
With the field populated, PuTTY sends that username instead of waiting for you to type it. This is convenient for a server you use regularly, but check the saved value whenever you switch accounts. A stored typo can cause every new connection to attempt the wrong account.
3. Authenticate with the non-root account
After the username is accepted, use the authentication method approved for that account. A password belongs to the remote account; your root password and Windows password are not substitutes.
Password authentication
- At the password prompt, type the password for the non-root account.
- Press Enter. PuTTY normally does not display characters while you type a password.
- If authentication succeeds, the server presents the account’s shell or configured login environment.
If the password is rejected, verify that the account exists, is allowed to use SSH, and that you are entering the non-root account’s password. Those checks depend on server policy and cannot be confirmed from PuTTY’s client settings alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPublic-key authentication
Public-key login uses a key pair rather than sending an account password. The public key must be installed for the specific remote account, and PuTTY must use the corresponding private key.
- Generate or obtain an approved key pair. PuTTY’s key utility can display the public-key text intended for an OpenSSH account.
- On the server, place that public-key text in the target account’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keysfile. - Keep the key entry on one line. Do not paste it into another user’s home directory or another account’s
authorized_keysfile. - In PuTTY, configure the session to use the matching private key in its SSH authentication settings. Command-line PuTTY tools can use their private-key option, and a compatible key can also be loaded into Pageant when your organization uses it.
- Connect with the target account’s username. The server checks that account’s
authorized_keys; a key installed for one account does not automatically authenticate another.
If the private key is protected by a passphrase, PuTTY asks for that passphrase or obtains it from the approved key agent. Keep the private key and passphrase under your organization’s security controls; possession of an unprotected private key can allow someone else to authenticate as that account.
Understand the two key files
The public key is the text that belongs on the server. The private key stays with the client and is the credential PuTTY presents during authentication. They are related, but they are not interchangeable: copying a private key into authorized_keys will not create a valid server authorization. Likewise, installing a public key does not let PuTTY connect unless the selected private key is its pair.
When more than one key is listed in authorized_keys, the server can accept any entry that matches a private key offered by the client, subject to its SSH policy. Remove obsolete keys only with administrator approval, because deleting the last working key can lock the account out.

Password versus public-key login
Both methods can authenticate a non-root account, but they place the setup and recovery work in different places.
| Factor | Password | Public key |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Use the account password at the prompt; no key-file installation is required. | Install the public key in the target user’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and configure PuTTY with the matching private key. |
| Operational security | Depends on the server’s password policy and how the user protects and enters the password. | Can avoid sending a reusable account password during SSH authentication, but the private key must be protected. |
| Passphrase and key management | Manage password changes, storage, and account lockout according to server policy. | Manage private-key files, optional passphrases, key agents, rotation, and removal of old public keys. |
| Recovery when access is lost | An administrator can reset or re-enable the account password if policy permits. | An administrator must install a replacement public key or restore access to the matching private key; losing both can require out-of-band administration. |
Choose the method required by the server. Do not install a public key or enable password authentication without following the administrator’s policy.
Fixing “Server refused our key”
That message means the server did not accept the key offered for the account. Work through these checks in order.
- Confirm the account name. The username in PuTTY must be the account whose
authorized_keysfile contains the public key. - Match the key pair. The private key selected in PuTTY must correspond to the public-key text installed on the server. A different key, even one belonging to the same person, will be refused.
- Check the file location. The key belongs in the target account’s home directory at
~/.ssh/authorized_keys, not inroot’s home directory or another user’s directory. - Keep each key on one line. Line breaks inserted while copying the public key can make an otherwise valid entry unusable.
- Check ownership and permissions. The target user should own the home directory,
.sshdirectory, and key file. OpenSSH may ignore keys when these locations are group-writable or world-writable.
The PuTTY documentation gives this typical permissions adjustment:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →chmod go-w $HOME $HOME/.ssh $HOME/.ssh/authorized_keys
Apply permission changes only after confirming them with the server administrator. Directory ownership, mandatory access controls, and local security policy can require additional handling, and changing permissions on a managed server without approval can disrupt access.
How to troubleshoot a rejected password
The username is wrong
Close PuTTY and open a new connection with the correct remote account. Many SSH servers will not let you replace the username after the first login attempt.

The password is rejected
- Check that the account exists on the remote server.
- Confirm that the account is permitted to use SSH.
- Enter the password for that account, not a root password or Windows password.
- Ask the administrator whether the account is locked, expired, or subject to an authentication policy that requires keys instead of passwords.
PuTTY can display the prompt and submit the credentials, but only the server administrator can verify account status and SSH policy.

Public keys are authorized per account. Install the public key under the intended user’s home directory, connect with that user’s username, and verify the ownership and permissions of that user’s ~/.ssh path.
The connection never reaches a username prompt
First recheck the hostname, IP address, port, and connection type. A wrong port may connect to a different service or fail before SSH authentication begins. If the host-key warning identifies a server you do not recognize, stop and verify the address and fingerprint with the administrator rather than accepting it blindly.
The saved session keeps using the wrong account
Open the saved profile, go to Connection > Data, and inspect Auto-login username. Replace it with the intended remote account, or clear it when you want PuTTY to ask at login as:. Save the corrected session before reconnecting.
What to do after a successful non-root login
Confirm which account you opened
At the shell, confirm the effective account with the system’s identity command, such as whoami. This is a quick way to catch a saved Auto-login username that pointed to a different account than you intended.

Run administrative work through approved escalation
A non-root login remains non-root. When the account is authorized for administration, use the server’s approved mechanism, commonly sudo, for the particular command that needs elevation. Follow the organization’s rules for which commands may be elevated and whether a password or additional approval is required. If the account lacks permission, contact the administrator instead of trying to bypass the policy.
Keep account boundaries clear
- Do not copy a private key into another user’s home directory merely to make login easier.
- Do not place a key in
root’sauthorized_keysfile when the task requires a named non-root account. - Do not assume that successful access to one account proves that another account is configured correctly.
Interactive username or Auto-login username?
| Choice | Best fit | Benefit | Risk to manage |
|---|---|---|---|
Type the username at login as: |
Shared workstations, occasional access, or servers where you regularly switch accounts. | You see and choose the account for each connection. | A typo normally requires closing PuTTY and reconnecting. |
| Save Auto-login username | A personal workstation that repeatedly connects to the same account. | Faster, consistent logins with less typing. | A stale or incorrect saved name silently attempts the wrong account. |
Saving a username does not save authorization. You still need the correct password or private key, and the server still applies that account’s permissions.

Security and account-management pitfalls
- Do not confuse authentication with authorization. Successfully proving the identity of
alexdoes not makealexan administrator. - Do not share credentials. Each operator should use the account and key assigned by the server administrator so actions can be attributed correctly.
- Protect saved sessions. A saved username is convenient, but review profiles before connecting to similarly named servers or switching between accounts.
- Protect private keys. Keep them in the approved location, use a passphrase when required, and do not email or copy them into shared folders.
- Verify the host before credentials. A host-key check protects against connecting to the wrong server; it does not validate the user account.
A reusable connection checklist
- Confirm the hostname or IP address.
- Confirm the SSH port, normally
22unless changed by the administrator. - Confirm the exact non-root account name.
- Open PuTTY, select SSH, and enter the host and port.
- Verify the server host key according to your organization’s process.
- Enter the account at
login as:or set it under Connection > Data > Auto-login username. - Use that account’s password, or configure its matching private key.
- If a key is refused, check the account-specific
authorized_keysfile, one-line formatting, ownership, and permissions. - After login, verify the account identity and use
sudoonly when the server policy authorizes the required administrative command.
The essential rule is simple: PuTTY authenticates the remote username you provide. Use the administrator’s non-root account name, restart the session if you mistype it, and keep that account’s password or public-key configuration separate from every other user on the server.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I log in to Linux with PuTTY as a normal user?
Enter the server host and SSH port, select SSH, open the connection, and type the administrator-provided non-root username at login as:. Then enter that account’s password or use its matching private key.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How do I set the PuTTY username before connecting?
In PuTTY, open Connection > Data and enter the remote account in Auto-login username. Return to Session and open or save the session.
Can I use my Windows username or the root password?
Only if the server administrator specifically made that Windows-style name the remote account. Normally, use the Linux or Unix username supplied for the server and that account’s password; a root password does not authenticate a different account.
Why does PuTTY say “Server refused our key”?
Check that the selected private key matches the public key in the intended user’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, that the entry remains on one line, and that the home directory, .ssh, and key file have acceptable ownership and permissions.
What should I do if I typed the wrong username?
Close the PuTTY window and start a new SSH session with the correct username. Many SSH servers do not permit a second login attempt with a different username in the same connection.
How do I become root after logging in as a non-root user?
Remain logged in as the named account and use the server’s approved privilege-escalation process, commonly sudo, only for commands that account is authorized to run. PuTTY does not grant or bypass server permissions.
The Bottom Line
Use the remote Linux account name provided by the administrator—not automatically root—when PuTTY asks login as:. You can prefill it under Connection > Data > Auto-login username, then authenticate with that account’s password or matching private key. If the name is wrong, reconnect; if a key is refused, check the account-specific authorized_keys file and its permissions. Perform privileged work only through the server’s approved sudo or equivalent policy.
