You cannot complete WhatsApp’s first laptop login with only a phone number, an SMS code, an email address, or a laptop password. You must have access to the phone that currently runs the WhatsApp account to authorize the laptop.
After that one-time link is approved, the laptop can continue using WhatsApp even when the phone is switched off, elsewhere, or not connected to the internet. That distinction is the key to logging in “without a phone.”
What “without a phone” actually means

WhatsApp supports up to four linked non-phone devices in addition to the primary phone. A laptop is one of those companion devices.

Use WhatsApp Web without keeping the phone online
- On the laptop, open web.whatsapp.com. WhatsApp Web displays a QR code.
- On Android, open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, choose Linked devices, and tap Link a device.
- On iPhone, open WhatsApp, go to Settings, tap Linked Devices, and choose Link a Device.
- Authenticate on the phone with your fingerprint, face, passcode, or other device security method if WhatsApp asks you to.
- Point the phone’s camera at the QR code on the laptop. Wait while WhatsApp authorizes the browser and synchronizes recent chats.
Once synchronization finishes, you can close WhatsApp on the phone or take the phone elsewhere. The linked laptop connects independently rather than mirroring every action directly through the phone. WhatsApp transfers recent chat history to the linked device in encrypted form, where it is stored in the device’s local database.

Link with a phone number instead of scanning
If the phone camera is broken, cannot focus, or cannot scan the screen, WhatsApp Web and the Windows application may offer Link with phone number. Some versions display Link with phone number instead below the QR code.
- Open WhatsApp Web or the WhatsApp desktop application.
- Select Link with phone number.
- Enter the phone number used by the WhatsApp account.
- WhatsApp displays an eight-character code.
- Approve the request or enter the displayed code in WhatsApp on the active phone when prompted.
This avoids using the camera, but it does not remove the phone requirement. The active WhatsApp app on the phone must still approve the link or receive the code. It is not a way to access an account when the phone is completely unavailable.
Use the WhatsApp desktop app
WhatsApp Web runs in a browser. WhatsApp Desktop is a separately downloaded computer application. On WhatsApp’s official download page, choose the Mac/PC download option, install the application, and then use the same QR-code or phone-number linking process.

There is no separate WhatsApp Business Web address. Open web.whatsapp.com or use the desktop application; it will connect to whichever personal or Business WhatsApp account is authorized on the phone.
If you already linked the laptop
You do not need to repeat the login every time the phone goes offline. Open WhatsApp Web or Desktop and use the existing session. Depending on browser storage and security settings, the session may remain active after the phone is disconnected.
The phone is still important for adding new devices, account recovery, and re-registering WhatsApp after the phone is replaced, reset, lost, or the account is registered elsewhere. A laptop session cannot independently take over as the primary WhatsApp device.

Fix common laptop-login problems
The QR code will not scan
- Refresh
web.whatsapp.comto generate a new code. QR codes expire and rotate. - Clean the phone camera lens and hold the phone at a steady distance from the screen.
- Reduce screen glare and return browser zoom to 100% with
Ctrl+0on Windows orCommand+0on Mac. - Make sure the entire QR code is visible and the camera can focus on it.
WhatsApp says “Phone Not Connected”
Keep the phone unlocked and connected temporarily while the first synchronization completes. Although linked devices can work independently afterward, the phone still performs the initial authorization and may need to finish synchronizing the new device.

Cookies and local browser storage are needed to retain the WhatsApp Web session. Privacy extensions, strict cookie controls, private-browsing mode, and browser-cleanup tools can delete that information. Temporarily disable an extension for WhatsApp Web or allow cookies and site storage for web.whatsapp.com.
You cannot add another laptop
Check the device limit. On the phone, open WhatsApp and go to Linked devices. If four companion devices are listed, tap an old device and choose Log out, then try linking the laptop again.

The phone was lost or replaced
An already linked laptop may continue working for a time, but it should not be treated as a permanent recovery method. Secure the account by contacting your mobile carrier about the number, reinstalling or registering WhatsApp on a replacement primary phone, and reviewing linked devices once access is restored. Re-registration can require the phone number’s normal verification process and a new device-link authorization.

Linking a laptop gives it access to the account’s chats and allows it to send messages as the account. Review access regularly:
- On Android, open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Linked devices.
- On iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings → Linked Devices.
- Review each device and its last-used time.
- Tap any unfamiliar laptop or browser and choose Log out.
If you used a shared or public computer, log out from the phone rather than relying on closing the browser window.

FAQ
Can I log in to WhatsApp on a laptop with only my phone number?
No. The phone number identifies the WhatsApp account, but initial laptop linking must still be approved through the active WhatsApp app on the primary phone. WhatsApp does not provide a laptop-only login using an SMS code, email, or password.
Can I use WhatsApp Web if my phone is switched off?
Yes, if the laptop was linked before the phone was switched off and the linked session remains valid. You cannot add a new laptop while relying only on an unavailable phone.
Can I link WhatsApp without scanning a QR code?
Often, yes. Choose “Link with phone number” or “Link with phone number instead” in WhatsApp Web or Desktop. You will still need to approve the request or enter the eight-character code through WhatsApp on the phone.
Can I use WhatsApp on a laptop if my phone is lost?
Not for a new login. A previously linked laptop might remain usable temporarily, but recovering or re-registering the account requires access to the phone number and a primary phone. Do not depend on an old laptop session as account recovery.
How many laptops can I connect to WhatsApp?
WhatsApp allows up to four linked non-phone devices in addition to the primary phone. Remove an unused device from the phone’s Linked devices screen when the limit is reached.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: you can use WhatsApp on a laptop without the phone being online, but you cannot perform the first link without access to the phone running the account. Use web.whatsapp.com or WhatsApp Desktop, authorize the laptop from Linked devices, and then the laptop can work independently.
