Use two separate sets of controls: recommendation settings change what an app puts in your feed, while messaging, privacy and interaction settings control who can contact you and engage with your posts. Review both groups in every app you use, because a private account does not automatically stop recommendations and a filtered feed does not stop message requests.
Instagram and TikTok provide the clearest combinations of recommendation, messaging and audience controls. Labels, defaults and availability vary by age, account type, app version and region, so use the current help guidance shown in your app when a label differs.
What “locking down” social media actually involves
There is no single switch that makes every social network private or removes every unwanted suggestion. A practical lockdown has three layers:

Start with the problem that is affecting you most, then check the other two layers. If you only tap “Not interested” on videos, strangers may still be able to send requests. If you only switch to a private account, the app may continue showing you recommendations based on your viewing and following activity.

Reduce unwanted recommendations on Instagram
Mark individual posts as unwanted
When an Instagram post or reel is unsuitable, use the item’s menu and choose Not interested when that option is offered. This gives Instagram a negative signal about that piece of content and can reduce similar suggestions. It is more useful than simply scrolling past content repeatedly, because viewing behavior is one of the signals used to personalize the feed.
Use the same action consistently for several examples of a topic you do not want. Do not assume that one selection creates a permanent category block: recommendations are continually recalculated from later likes, follows, comments and viewing behavior.
Review content preferences
Instagram provides content settings for managing the kinds of suggested material you see. Look in the app’s current settings and privacy area for content or suggested-content controls. Depending on the account and region, you may be able to reduce sensitive material or adjust how recommendations are presented.
Sensitive-content filtering is narrower than a complete recommendation reset. It addresses material Instagram classifies as sensitive; it does not necessarily remove ordinary posts from accounts, topics or formats you simply do not enjoy.
Reset suggested content when your feed has drifted
Instagram has described a reset option for suggested content. Use it when your recommendations have accumulated around a topic, creator or trend you no longer want. A reset changes the starting point for suggestions, but your new interactions will train the feed again. After resetting, avoid opening, liking or commenting on content you are trying to leave behind.
Mute or unfollow sources that keep returning
If a followed account is the source of unwanted posts, muting it removes its posts or stories from your view without the social signal of an unfollow. Unfollowing is more decisive when you no longer want that account in your feed. These actions address accounts you already follow; “Not interested” addresses recommended items from accounts you may not follow.

What Instagram controls cannot promise
Instagram’s feed is personalized from your interactions, and recommendation controls are ways to reshape exposure rather than a guarantee that all unwanted content disappears. You may still see related material, advertisements or posts that fit a broader category. Treat repeated unwanted content as a reason to combine several controls instead of repeatedly relying on one button.

Use the app’s recommendation feedback
For an unwanted video, use TikTok’s available feedback action, such as Not interested, from the video’s sharing or options controls. This tells the recommendation system to show fewer similar videos. The effect is probabilistic: future viewing, searches, follows and watch time can introduce related material again.
Manage Topics
TikTok’s current controls include Manage Topics, which lets users adjust the relative amount of content shown around broad subjects. It changes the balance of topics rather than creating a guaranteed block for every video in a category.
Menu names and eligibility can differ by country, age and app release. The February 2026 teen-safety announcement describing Manage Topics was tied to TikTok’s Philippines program, so do not assume that the same control, wording or default is present on every account. If you cannot find it, use the current in-app help search for “Manage Topics” rather than following an old screenshot.
Smart Keyword Filtering
TikTok has also described Smart Keyword Filtering in that February 2026 teen-safety announcement. It is intended to help filter content associated with selected words or topics. The announcement focuses on teen safety and a Philippines rollout; availability for adults, other regions and other account configurations is not established by that announcement. Check the control’s explanation before relying on it as a universal block.

Use a clean-up period after changing settings
Recommendation systems learn from behavior. For several days after changing topics or filtering terms, do not linger on clips you want less of, even to inspect them. Use the options menu to mark them unwanted, leave searches that lead to them, and follow or deliberately watch subjects you do want. This gives the system clearer signals than changing a setting once and continuing the old viewing pattern.

Stop strangers from sending direct messages
TikTok: choose who can message you
TikTok’s privacy guidance lets users choose who is allowed to send direct messages. Review the messaging control in the app’s privacy settings and select the narrowest audience that still works for you. Depending on the account, choices may distinguish friends, followers, suggested contacts or no one; the labels and available choices can change.
TikTok states that direct messaging is available only to people aged 16 and older. A younger account should not be treated as having the same messaging controls as an adult account. If a teen account is linked to a parent or guardian through Family Pairing, the supervising adult can use the available linked-account controls to manage privacy and messaging settings. The teen and supervising account may not expose identical options.
Instagram: control requests as well as existing chats
Instagram separates messages from people you already connect with from message requests. In the messaging and privacy settings, look for controls that determine who may send requests and where those requests appear. Restricting requests is different from merely hiding a notification: a request can still exist unless the sender is prevented from contacting you or the request is deleted.
Instagram also provides message-request filtering and keyword-based protections. Use those filters for common unwanted phrases, spam patterns or terms that make you uncomfortable. Filtering is not a substitute for blocking a persistent account, because a determined sender can change wording or create another account.
Use limits, blocking and reporting in escalating order
- Temporary limits: Use Instagram’s limits feature when you are receiving a surge of unwanted interactions and need a short period of reduced contact.
- Restrict or filter: Use request and keyword controls when you want less visibility without immediately taking the strongest action.
- Block: Block an account that keeps contacting you, evades requests or makes you feel unsafe. Blocking is more reliable than asking the person to stop.
- Report: Report harassment, threats, scams, impersonation or other policy violations through the platform’s reporting flow. Reporting and blocking can be used together.
Do not reply to an unwanted message merely to tell the sender to stop when the contact feels threatening or manipulative. A reply confirms that the account is active and can invite more contact. Save evidence only when doing so is safe, then use the platform’s report and block tools.
Make your own posts harder to discover or misuse
TikTok visibility and comments
TikTok distinguishes between a public and private account. A private account requires you to approve followers, while a public account can expose posts and profile information to a much wider audience. Privacy settings also let you choose an audience for individual posts and control who may comment.

Use the narrowest audience appropriate for each post rather than assuming the account-level setting fits every upload. Review comment controls as well: limiting comments, filtering unwanted terms and turning comments off can prevent a public post from becoming an open contact channel.

Instagram follower approval and interactions
Instagram’s private-account setting requires approval before people can follow you and see posts intended for followers. It is an audience control, not a recommendation control: it changes access to your material, not the suggestions shown to you.
Audit existing followers after switching to private. Remove accounts you no longer recognize or trust, then review mentions, tags, comments and story replies. A private account is less useful if an unwanted follower was approved previously or if public interactions reveal information through other people’s posts.
Facebook audience, tags and timeline review
Facebook provides Privacy Checkup and audience selection for posts. Use them to review who can see future posts, older posts and profile details. Tag and timeline review can require your approval before tagged material appears in the places you control.
Audience selection is applied per post in many publishing flows. Check the audience indicator before publishing sensitive material, especially when sharing from a group, page or event where a different visibility rule may apply.

Teen accounts and family supervision need a separate check
Age-based defaults can be stricter than adult settings, and some features may be unavailable rather than merely disabled. TikTok’s stated minimum age for direct messaging is 16. A parent or guardian should therefore first confirm the account’s recorded age and whether it is linked through Family Pairing before troubleshooting a missing messaging option.

Supervision tools are not a replacement for talking with a young person about scams, coercion, sexual exploitation, impersonation and requests for private information. Explain how to stop a conversation, block the account and report it without escalating the exchange. Review the settings together after major app updates because labels and available controls can change.
A maintenance routine that keeps the lockdown effective
- List every active app and account. Include secondary accounts, creator profiles and apps used by a child.
- Review recommendations separately in each app. Apply negative feedback to unwanted items, adjust topics or content settings, and mute or unfollow persistent sources.
- Review messaging audiences. Set who can send messages and where requests are filtered. Test the setting from a trusted account only if doing so is safe and permitted.
- Review visibility. Check account privacy, individual post audiences, followers, comments, mentions, tags and story replies.
- Remove old access. Block or remove followers and contacts you no longer recognize; delete unused connected accounts where appropriate.
- Recheck after changes. Revisit settings after an app update, a change in age or supervision status, a new account, or a change in personal circumstances.
Use each platform’s current help page or in-app explanation for the final tap sequence. Menu paths were not consistent enough across platforms, regions and account types to treat one universal sequence as reliable.
What default settings can and cannot tell you
Ofcom reported results from 2026 mock-platform trials about how people respond to defaults. Nearly seven in ten children retained a default that excluded harmful content, compared with five in ten when no default was presented. Among adults, 15% switched from an “All content types” default to “Reduced sensitive content”; 24% chose reduced content when no option was preselected; and 42% accepted reduced content when it was preselected.
These figures describe choices in trials, not guaranteed behavior on a particular service or an assurance that an individual’s settings will match the trial. Ofcom also cautioned that mock online trials may not capture real-world influences such as social norms and peer influence. Treat a preselected safety option as a prompt to inspect the setting, not as proof that every recommendation or message route is covered.
Troubleshooting when unwanted content or messages continue
“I tapped Not interested, but similar posts remain.”
Apply the feedback to several examples, review followed accounts and recent searches, and stop opening or interacting with the unwanted material. If the service offers a recommendation reset or topic controls, combine them. No recommendation control guarantees a complete removal of a broad subject.
“I made my account private, but strangers still appear in requests.”
Account privacy controls who can see your material; they do not necessarily disable message requests. Review the separate messaging audience, filter requests, and block or report persistent senders.
“A setting described online is missing.”
Check the account’s age, country, account type and app version. A feature may be in a limited rollout, available only to teens or adults, or named differently after an update. Use the current in-app help search rather than an old guide.
“A blocked person contacts me from another account.”
Do not negotiate with the new account. Block and report each account, tighten message and follower permissions, and review what profile information could help the person identify or reach you. If there are threats or immediate safety concerns, contact a trusted person or the appropriate local emergency or support service.
The practical decision
For feed problems, change recommendation signals and content or topic preferences. For contact problems, narrow message audiences and use filters, limits, blocking and reporting. For exposure problems, make the account or individual posts private and review followers, comments, tags and mentions. Perform all three checks in every app, then revisit them after updates or life changes; that layered approach is more dependable than searching for one universal “lockdown” switch.
