You have two practical choices: first, check whether your phone includes a manufacturer App lock that protects the apps already installed in your normal profile. If it does not, Android 15 or later may offer Private Space, which creates a separately locked profile and installs a new copy of the app. Private Space is not an overlay password for the existing installation, so your choice depends on whether you need to protect the current app or can set up a separate instance.

Choose the right kind of app lock

“Lock an app” can mean two different things on Android:

  • App-by-app authentication: a manufacturer feature asks for a privacy credential when someone opens selected apps in the ordinary phone profile. The original installation, its data, and its normal launcher location remain in place.
  • A protected separate space: Android Private Space creates another Android profile. You install a fresh instance of the app inside it, then lock or hide the entire space.

That distinction matters. If you need to protect an existing messaging, banking, photo, or notes installation without signing in again, look for App lock first. If your phone lacks that feature and you are willing to install and configure a second instance, Private Space is the built-in Android 15 option.

Route What is protected Best fit Main trade-off
Manufacturer App lock Selected apps in the normal phone profile You want a gate on apps you already use Availability, menu location, and behavior depend on the phone model and software release
Android Private Space A separate profile containing new app instances You want a protected area that can also be hidden Original app data is not copied; locked apps stop running and cannot send notifications
Screen pinning The current screen, temporarily You are lending the phone for one task It is not a lasting lock for selected apps

Check for a built-in App lock first

Some Android manufacturers provide an App lock feature in their own software. Xiaomi documents a workflow that lets you select apps and set an access credential. A OnePlus Android 13 user guide also lists App lock. These documents establish that the feature exists on some devices, not that every Android phone includes it.

Find the setting

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Use the Settings search field and enter App lock. Also try Lock apps or Privacy if your software uses different wording.
  3. If a matching setting appears, open it and read the description to confirm that it protects individual apps rather than the whole device.
  4. Select the apps to protect and create the requested privacy credential. The credential may be a PIN, pattern, password, or another method supported by that software build.
  5. Lock the phone and open one of the selected apps to verify that the prompt appears. Test every app you selected; some system applications or special app types may be excluded by the manufacturer.

Do not assume a menu path from another model will match your phone. App lock can move between Settings sections, use a different name, or be absent after a software update. If Settings search finds nothing, check the phone maker’s current user guide for your exact model and Android release. Installing a random utility that imitates App lock can introduce a separate privacy and reliability decision; the built-in feature is the route documented for the devices described above.

What a manufacturer App lock normally changes

When supported, this route gates the selected installation where it already lives. It does not create the separate profile behavior described for Private Space. Because implementation details are manufacturer-specific, verify whether your build also protects recent-app previews, notifications, split-screen windows, or app shortcuts. The documentation cited for Xiaomi and OnePlus confirms the app-selection and credential workflow, but it does not establish one universal behavior for every brand, region, or release.

Set up Private Space on Android 15 or later

Private Space is Google’s built-in alternative when a direct App lock is unavailable. Google describes it as “a digital safe on your phone.” The feature is available only on eligible devices running Android 15 or later, and a manufacturer or enterprise administrator can disable it. It is also unavailable on managed devices and subject to Android’s user and profile eligibility rules. Seeing Android 15 in the version screen therefore does not guarantee that Private Space will appear.

1. Confirm that your phone is eligible

  1. Open Settings and check About phone (the exact label can vary) for the Android version.
  2. Confirm that the version is Android 15 or later.
  3. In Settings, search for Private space. If the result is missing, the phone maker, an administrator policy, or the device’s profile configuration may have disabled the feature.

Do not treat a missing menu as a setup error until you have checked those conditions. Work-managed phones, supervised configurations, and some multi-user arrangements can prevent Private Space from being offered.

2. Create the space

  1. Go to Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Private space.
  2. Authenticate with the phone’s current screen lock when Android asks.
  3. Choose whether Private Space should use the device’s existing lock or a new lock. A separate lock gives the private area its own authentication secret; reusing the device lock is simpler but does not separate the credentials.
  4. Complete the on-screen setup. Android may offer the option to use a separate Google Account for the private area. That account is optional, but Google says it can reduce private-space data from appearing outside the space.

The account choice affects separation of data and services; it does not turn the existing app in your main profile into a locked app.

3. Install the app inside Private Space

  1. Open the Private Space container from the launcher or the Private Space settings screen.
  2. Use its installation control to install the app you want to protect. Install the app again even if the same app is already present in the main profile.
  3. Sign in and configure the new instance as required by that app.

Android creates a new app instance. It does not move or copy the original app’s local data into Private Space. You may therefore need to sign in again, restore data from that app’s own cloud service, or reconfigure settings. The original app remains in the main profile unless you remove it yourself.

4. Lock the space

You can lock Private Space manually from its launcher container, or configure automatic locking. Google lists these automatic choices:

5. Hide the container when it is locked

In Private Space settings, enable Hide private space when it’s locked if you do not want the container visible in the launcher. The container hides the next time it is locked. Hiding changes discoverability; it does not replace the lock credential. Unlock Private Space through the system’s Private Space entry when you need to use the apps again.

Understand what happens while Private Space is locked

A locked Private Space is both inaccessible and inactive. Google’s Android Help explains that apps inside it cannot run foreground or background activity and cannot show notifications while the space is locked.

  • Messages, reminders, and other alerts from those apps will not appear until the space is unlocked.
  • Background synchronization and scheduled work pause while the space is locked.
  • Health, location, security-monitoring, and other apps that must operate continuously are poor candidates for this arrangement.
  • Unlocking the space allows its apps to resume according to the app and Android’s normal battery and background rules.

This behavior is a major difference from an app-by-app gate. A manufacturer App lock may leave the app installed in the normal profile, whereas Private Space intentionally stops the protected profile when locked.

Private Space versus a manufacturer App lock

Question Manufacturer App lock Private Space
Does it protect the existing installation? Yes, when the feature is implemented as documented for that device No. You install a new instance inside the separate profile
Is app data copied automatically? The app remains in its existing profile No; local data is not copied from the original instance
Can the protected item be hidden? Depends on the manufacturer’s implementation Yes. The Private Space container can be hidden when locked
Do notifications and background work continue while locked? Behavior varies by device and software build No. Locked apps cannot run or show notifications
Is another sign-in likely? Usually the existing app account remains in place, but verify on your device Often yes, because the app instance is new and its data was not copied
Where is it available? Only on devices whose manufacturer software provides it Eligible Android 15-or-later devices, unless disabled or blocked by policy

Use App lock when continuity matters: the same installation, account, and day-to-day behavior. Use Private Space when separation and the option to hide the entire area matter more than uninterrupted background activity.

Back up before removing Private Space

Deleting Private Space removes the apps and their local data in that profile. Google warns that a device backup does not restore the deleted private area as a complete space. Data that an app had already synchronized to its own cloud service may be recoverable after you reinstall the app and sign in, but unsynchronized local files and settings can be lost.

Safer deletion checklist

  • Open each important app in Private Space and confirm that its account has synchronized.
  • Export or copy any files the app stores only locally, using the app’s own supported method.
  • Record recovery codes and confirm that you can sign in again.
  • Only then use the Private Space settings control to delete the space.

Deleting the space is different from merely locking it. Locking preserves the profile for later use; deletion destroys the profile’s installed apps and local data.

Use screen pinning only for temporary lending

Screen pinning can keep another person on the app that is currently open when you hand over your phone. It is useful for showing a map, letting someone make a call, or allowing a child to use one game briefly. It is not a persistent app lock for normal personal use, and it does not create a hidden protected area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the exact screen-pinning controls vary by Android version and device software, verify the current instructions on your phone before relying on it. For ongoing protection of selected apps, use a manufacturer App lock or Private Space instead.

Troubleshoot common problems

“App lock” does not appear in Settings

  • Search Settings for App lock, Lock apps, and Privacy.
  • Check the exact model and software-version guide; a feature documented for one model or release may not exist on another.
  • Install official system updates, then search again. Updates can add, rename, or relocate privacy controls.
  • If no built-in feature exists, evaluate Private Space if the phone runs an eligible, unrestricted Android 15 release.

Private Space is missing on Android 15

  • Confirm that the phone is actually running Android 15 or later, not merely using a launcher or security patch with a similar label.
  • Check whether the phone is managed by an employer, school, or other administrator.
  • Consider manufacturer disablement and Android profile or multi-user eligibility limits.
  • Ask the device maker whether the feature is supported for your model and region; do not assume every Android 15 build exposes it.

The app inside Private Space is empty

That is expected for a new instance. The original app’s local database was not copied. Sign in again, restore through the app’s supported cloud process, or move files using the app’s documented export and import tools.

Notifications stopped

If Private Space is locked, stopped notifications and background work are by design. Unlock the space to use the apps, or choose a different protection method for an app that must alert or sync continuously.

The private app still appears in the launcher

Enable Hide private space when it’s locked. The container hides on the next lock event; it is not hidden merely because the setting was changed while the space was already unlocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which option should you use?

  • Choose manufacturer App lock if Settings provides it and you need to protect the existing app without creating another installation.
  • Choose Private Space if your phone is eligible for Android 15’s feature and you want a separate, hideable area for apps, accepting a fresh setup and no notifications while locked.
  • Choose screen pinning only when someone needs temporary access to one open app and you do not need a permanent per-app lock.

Before committing, test the exact app you care about: open it, lock the phone, check whether the app’s alerts are acceptable, and confirm that you can recover its data. Android’s security features are conditional on the model, software release, profile state, and administrator policy, so the Settings screens on your own phone are the final compatibility check.
