You can lock your Aadhaar fingerprint, iris and face authentication through the official myAadhaar portal, the official Aadhaar app, or an authorised Aadhaar centre. A registered mobile number is required for online and app use. When biometrics are locked, authentication fails with UIDAI error code 330. For an exam, KYC check or another legitimate need, use the temporary-unlock option; it ends at the time set by UIDAI or as soon as that authentication transaction is completed, whichever comes first.
What Aadhaar biometric locking does
UIDAI’s biometric-locking service lets an Aadhaar holder disable biometric authentication until it is needed. The lock covers all three biometric modalities used by Aadhaar authentication:
- Fingerprint
- Iris
- Face
While the lock is active, an organisation cannot complete an Aadhaar authentication transaction using any of those modalities. UIDAI identifies the locked condition with error code 330. The code is therefore an expected security response when a locked biometric is presented, not proof that your fingerprint or iris has suddenly stopped working.

Biometric lock is different from locking the entire Aadhaar number
UIDAI also provides a separate Aadhaar (UID) lock/unlock function. The two controls have different effects:

If your concern is specifically the use of fingerprints, iris scans or face authentication, choose the biometric-lock service rather than the broader UID-lock service.
What you need before starting
A mobile number registered with Aadhaar
UIDAI requires a registered mobile number for the lock and unlock service. The number is used for OTP-based verification and must be the number already associated with your Aadhaar record. A different number, an unverified number or a number belonging to someone else will not satisfy this prerequisite.
If no mobile number is registered, you cannot complete the online or app process first. Visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or a Mobile Update End Point and ask for your mobile number to be added or updated. After the update is processed, use the number that is shown as registered when you request an OTP.

A phone or computer and access to an official channel
For self-service, use the myAadhaar website or the official Aadhaar app. An authorised Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra can assist if you cannot use the digital services. Interface names and prompts can change, so follow the labels displayed by UIDAI at the time you use the service.
Verification information
Have access to the registered phone for OTP delivery. The app has its own registration and verification flow: UIDAI’s app documentation describes entering the Aadhaar number, selecting the SIM, completing face authentication and creating a six-digit PIN. The app then includes biometric lock and unlock controls.

There is no requirement to buy a biometric reader, Aadhaar card accessory or other physical device. The control is an account-level UIDAI service.

- Open the official myAadhaar portal. Check the address before entering your Aadhaar number or OTP.
- Sign in or start the Aadhaar service flow requested by the portal. Enter the details exactly as prompted.
- Select the service labelled for biometric lock/unlock. Do not choose the separate Aadhaar (UID) lock option unless you intend to block demographic and OTP authentication as well.
- Choose the option to lock biometrics.
- Complete the OTP or other identity verification requested by UIDAI. The OTP must be delivered to your registered mobile number.
- Wait for the confirmation shown by the portal. Keep a record of the confirmation only in a secure place; do not forward the OTP or account details to another person.
Once the lock is active, fingerprint, iris and face authentication attempts are rejected and the relying organisation receives the locked-biometric response, error code 330.

How to lock biometrics in the Aadhaar app
The official Aadhaar app is useful when you want to manage the setting directly from your phone. The exact screen labels may change with app updates, but the process follows this pattern:
- Install or open the official Aadhaar app from the source identified by UIDAI. Avoid unofficial apps that ask for your Aadhaar number or OTP.
- Complete the app’s registration flow. UIDAI’s documented flow includes entering your Aadhaar number, selecting the SIM associated with the registered mobile number, completing face authentication and setting a six-digit PIN.
- After registration, open the app’s biometric lock/unlock service.
- Select Lock biometrics and complete the OTP, PIN, face or other verification requested in the current version.
- Confirm that the app reports the lock as enabled before closing it.
If app registration cannot be completed, use the myAadhaar website or visit an authorised centre. Do not bypass a failed verification by installing a third-party app or giving an OTP to someone claiming to provide support.
How to unlock Aadhaar biometrics for an exam, KYC or another transaction
Use temporary unlock when a legitimate service needs your fingerprint, iris or face. The unlock is not an unlimited switch that stays open indefinitely. Regulation 11 of the Aadhaar Authentication and Offline Verification Regulations, 2021 says that temporary unlocking ends at the period specified by the Authority or when the authentication transaction is completed, whichever is earlier.
- Open the same official myAadhaar service or Aadhaar app used for locking. You can also ask an authorised Aadhaar centre for assistance.
- Select the biometric lock/unlock service and choose Temporary unlock or the equivalent label displayed by UIDAI.
- Complete the requested OTP or in-app identity verification. Keep the registered mobile phone available.
- Go directly to the legitimate organisation that requested Aadhaar biometric authentication and complete the transaction while the temporary unlock is active.
- Allow the transaction to finish before leaving. The temporary state will end at the authority-specified time or at transaction completion, whichever occurs first.
Because UIDAI does not promise one universal duration for every situation, do not plan around a fixed number of minutes or hours. Start the unlock close to the appointment and follow the status and timing shown by the official service.

Using SMS OTP and the 1947 service
UIDAI’s FAQ states that OTP authentication is mandatory for Aadhaar lock/unlock and biometric-lock/unlock SMS functions. To request an SMS OTP, send the following message from your registered mobile number to 1947:
GETOTP followed by the last four or last eight digits of your Aadhaar number.
For example, the message format is GETOTP 1234 when the last four digits are used. Enter your own digits; never publish them in a forum or send them to an unsolicited caller. The SMS is an OTP request, not a reason to disclose the OTP to another person. Complete the lock or unlock action only through the official UIDAI flow and the current instructions shown there.
Virtual ID (VID) and biometric locking
A Virtual ID is a temporary, revocable 16-digit number mapped to your Aadhaar number. It is separate from the biometric-lock switch, but UIDAI provides SMS commands for generating or retrieving the active VID from the registered mobile number:

GVIDfollowed by the last four Aadhaar digits generates a VID.RVIDfollowed by the last four Aadhaar digits retrieves the active VID.
Send either command to 1947 from the registered mobile number, following UIDAI’s current SMS instructions. A VID does not remove the need to manage biometric lock status when a service specifically requests biometric authentication. Also remember that the broader Aadhaar (UID) lock has separate consequences for authentication using the UID, UID Token and VID.

The self-service website and app cannot replace the registered-mobile prerequisite. Take your Aadhaar details to an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Mobile Update End Point and request a mobile-number update. Ask the operator when the new number becomes usable for OTP services, then retry the official lock/unlock flow.
If you are already at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra for another service, ask whether the staff can assist with biometric locking or unlocking. Use only an authorised centre and follow its identity-check instructions; do not hand your OTP to an intermediary outside the centre.

Security practices that prevent accidental exposure
- Type myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in yourself or reach it from the official UIDAI website. Do not use links sent in unsolicited texts, emails or social-media messages.
- Keep the registered SIM in your possession when requesting an OTP. Never read an OTP to a caller, agent or person promising a faster unlock.
- Use the official Aadhaar app only. Review the app’s registration and permission prompts, and protect the six-digit app PIN as you would a banking PIN.
- Unlock only when a legitimate transaction is ready to take place. Since the temporary state has an authority-defined limit, delaying the transaction can cause the unlock to expire.
- Use a VID when a participating service supports it and you prefer not to disclose the permanent Aadhaar number. Remember that VID generation and retrieval are separate from biometric locking.
- After an unexpected authentication request, check the status through an official channel rather than attempting repeated biometric scans or giving information to an unknown intermediary.
