For reliably clean dishes, scrape off large food pieces, point dirty surfaces down and toward the spray arms, leave space between every item, and keep the spray arms and detergent dispenser clear. Put larger plates and cookware on the lower rack, cups and glasses on the upper rack, separate utensils so they do not nest, and follow your dishwasher’s manual whenever its rack layout or item guidance differs.

Why loading determines cleaning performance

A dishwasher cleans by directing pressurized water through rotating spray arms. The detergent and hot water can work only where the spray reaches. A plate that faces sideways, a bowl nested inside another bowl, or a pan covering the dispenser creates a sheltered area where soil remains.

Loading also affects draining and drying. Items should be tilted so water can run off rather than pool in their bases. Crowding can stop a spray arm from turning, prevent detergent from releasing, and allow dishes to strike one another during the cycle.

The instructions below describe common layouts. Rack shapes, tine spacing, spray-arm positions, utensil baskets, third racks, and temperature limits vary by model. Your owner’s manual takes priority for plastics, delicate glassware, cookware, and any unusual accessory.

Prepare dishes before they enter the racks

Scrape away large food and hard debris

Remove bones, fruit pits, toothpicks, labels, and large scraps. Scrape plates into the bin or compost rather than leaving thick deposits for the filter to catch. Hard particles can obstruct spray-arm openings or circulate back onto dishes.

Routine pre-rinsing is generally unnecessary in the Whirlpool and Bosch guidance represented here. Modern automatic-dishwasher detergent is intended to work on normal food soil. Excessive rinsing also removes soil that helps some machines’ sensors choose an appropriate cycle. Scrape thoroughly, then load promptly; use the appliance and detergent instructions if your model specifies a different preparation method.

Check the item before loading

  • Confirm that the item is marked dishwasher-safe or is listed as acceptable in the manual.
  • Keep hand-painted pieces, fine crystal, untreated wood, insulated containers, and items with glued parts out unless the manufacturer explicitly permits them.
  • Remove detachable parts only when the manual says they can be washed separately.
  • Open hinged lids and disassemble pieces enough for water to reach trapped food, while keeping small parts secure in the designated basket.

The loading rules that matter most

Point soil toward the spray

Face the dirty side of each plate, bowl, or pan downward and inward, toward the nearest spray-arm jets. This orientation gives water a direct path to the soil and encourages runoff during drying. Do not turn every item in the same direction automatically; use the angle that exposes its interior to the spray in your particular rack.

Leave a water path around every item

Keep a visible gap between dishes. Do not overlap plates, wedge bowls together, or place one cup inside another. A small item can still block a jet if it sits tightly against a larger one. Adjustable tines may be folded only when doing so creates a stable arrangement with adequate spacing.

Protect moving and dispensing parts

Before starting the cycle, rotate each accessible spray arm by hand. It should turn freely without touching a plate, pan handle, tall glass, or utensil. Also look at the detergent dispenser: nothing should cover its lid or prevent it from opening. A dish that blocks either part can leave an entire rack dirty.

How to load the dishwasher: a reliable sequence

  1. Empty and inspect the racks. Remove any objects left from the previous cycle and make sure the filter area is not covered by debris.
  2. Scrape the incoming load. Remove large food pieces and hard fragments. Do not rely on the dishwasher to grind bones, pits, or packaging material.
  3. Load the lower rack with large flat items. Set plates in the rows of tines with their soiled faces toward the center and downward. Leave a gap between neighboring plates; do not lay them flat across several rows.
  4. Angle bowls and serving pieces. Place bowls, baking dishes, and platters so their interiors face the spray and their lowest edges allow water to drain. Avoid placing a deep item where it shields an entire row behind it.
  5. Add cookware where the spray can reach it. Put pots and pans on the lower rack when the manual permits them. Tilt them rather than nesting them, and position handles so they do not stop a spray arm or interfere with the dispenser.
  6. Use the upper rack for smaller and more delicate everyday items. Load cups, mugs, glasses, small plates, and permitted plastics between the tines. Turn openings downward or at an angle so water cannot pool inside.
  7. Use a third rack only for approved items. Flat utensils, small tools, and other pieces belong there only if the manual identifies that rack for them. Check the clearance above and below it before closing the door.
  8. Separate the silverware. Alternate spoons, forks, and other pieces instead of stacking identical shapes together. Put sharp knives in the position required by the basket instructions, with handles arranged for safe unloading.
  9. Perform the clearance check. Spin the spray arms, inspect the dispenser lid, and look for any item protruding into the door seal or preventing the racks from sliding completely closed.
  10. Add the correct detergent and optional rinse aid. Use detergent labeled for automatic dishwashers, put it in the specified dispenser, and follow the package dosage. Bosch’s guidance notes that rinse aid can improve drying; fill its reservoir only as directed for your model.
  11. Select a cycle suited to the soil. A normal or automatic cycle fits an ordinary load. Choose a heavier cycle when cookware or baked-on food requires it, within the limits stated by the appliance manual.

Where each type of item belongs

Item Usual location Position Important check
Dinner plates and side plates Lower rack Between tines, dirty faces inward and down Do not overlap or lay plates across rows
Bowls Lower rack for large bowls; upper rack for small bowls when supported Interior toward the spray, tilted for drainage Leave room behind each bowl for the jet pattern
Pots, pans, and baking dishes Lower rack Angled, not nested; handles kept clear of moving parts Verify the material and size are dishwasher-safe
Glasses, mugs, and cups Upper rack Upside down or tilted between tines Prevent contact that could cause chipping
Small plates and saucers Upper rack Upright with spacing Do not place where a tall item blocks the lower spray
Dishwasher-safe plastics Usually upper rack Secure and angled so they cannot flip over Follow the model’s heat and rack restrictions
Flat utensils and small tools Third rack, if provided and approved Separated in the rack’s slots Check that the rack clears tall items below
Forks, spoons, and knives Utensil basket or approved third rack Separated to avoid nesting; sharp pieces positioned as directed Keep handles and points safe to grasp after washing

Loading the lower rack without creating dead zones

The lower rack receives strong spray and higher heat, so it is normally the place for plates, large bowls, serving dishes, and cookware approved for the appliance. Use the rack’s intended rows rather than filling the center with a flat sheet that covers the spray pattern.

Arrange plates from the back or center outward if that makes the dirty faces point toward the spray-arm hub. If a plate’s face is nearly vertical, a slight inward angle can expose more surface while still allowing the rack to hold it securely.

Deep pans need special attention. Turn their open sides toward the spray and lean them enough for water to escape. Do not put a pan directly over the detergent cup, and do not allow a long handle to extend into the arm’s path. If one oversized item forces neighboring pieces together, wash it separately rather than sacrificing the spacing of the entire rack.

Loading the upper rack and plastics

The upper rack is typically designed for glasses, cups, mugs, small plates, and smaller bowls. Place each item between tines or on the manufacturer’s supports so it cannot roll into another item. Openings should face down or be tilted; an upright cup can retain dirty water after the spray stops.

Keep fragile glassware from touching. Check that tall stemware fits beneath the upper spray arm and does not press against the ceiling when the rack is pushed in. If the rack height is adjustable, set it before loading and verify that the lower spray arm still has full clearance.

Heat-sensitive plastics commonly belong on the upper rack, farther from the heating element, but this is not a universal rule. Some models prohibit particular plastics or require a dedicated setting. Follow the marking on the item and the dishwasher manual; a “dishwasher-safe” claim does not override a model-specific temperature restriction.

Utensils, knives, and third racks

Prevent nesting in a basket

Spoons and forks with matching shapes can fit tightly together, leaving their inner surfaces unwashed. Mix positions and orientations so water can reach both sides. Use the basket’s separators if supplied. Do not force too many pieces into one compartment.

Handle sharp tools deliberately

Use the arrangement shown by the basket instructions for knives and other pointed tools. The safe direction depends on the basket design: some models expect handles up, while others provide a covered section or a dedicated slot. Load sharp items so you can remove them without reaching toward exposed points.

Use a third rack according to its design

A shallow third rack may be intended for cutlery and flat utensils, while another design may accept small cups or cooking tools. Its position can make it incompatible with tall glasses or pans below. Never assume that a third rack has the same heat rating or clearance as the main racks; consult the manual for permitted items and loading diagrams.

Detergent, rinse aid, and starting checks

Use only automatic-dishwasher detergent, whether powder, gel, tablet, or pack, and follow the product label and appliance instructions for quantity. Hand dish soap creates excessive foam and can leak from the machine. Do not place detergent loose in the tub unless the manual specifically instructs that method.

  • 2. SPOTFREE CLEAN DISHES: Get virtually spotfree sparkling clean dishes from even the toughest messes with these dishwasher detergent pods, a must-have among your cleaning supplies
  • 3. WATER SAVING: Running the dishwasher daily saves water*. *ENERGY STAR certified dishwashers use less than 4 gallons per cycle. Running the tap for 11 minutes while handwashing uses up to 24 gallons of water
  • 4. 1 RECOMMENDED BRAND: More dishwasher brands in North America recommend Cascade based on co-marketing agreements vs. other automatic dishwasher detergent brands
  • 5. CONVENIENT AND RESPONSIBLE: Convenient, premeasured ActionPac with no finicky plastic wrapping. Phosphate free, making it a responsible choice among household essentials and cleaning products

Keep the dispenser area unobstructed. A large plate or pan directly in front of the cup can stop the lid from opening or keep detergent from washing into the tub at the correct point in the cycle.

Rinse aid is optional on many machines but can help water sheet off dishes and improve drying. Set its dosage according to the manual and product directions, especially if you see spotting or excessive residue after changing the setting.

Close the door gently and make sure the racks are fully inside the tub. A door that catches on a handle or utensil can fail to latch, and an item protruding through the seal can leak or break.

Why dishes remain dirty after a cycle

Loading is a common cause, but it is not the only one. Diagnose the symptom instead of simply adding more detergent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Symptom Likely loading or maintenance cause What to check next
Food remains on several dishes Crowding, overlapping, or dirty faces turned away from the spray Reload with gaps and inward-facing soil; choose a stronger cycle for heavy soil
One section of a rack is dirty A plate, pan, or utensil blocked a spray arm Rotate the arm by hand and rearrange the obstructing item
Detergent is still in the cup The dispenser lid could not open or a dish covered it Clear the lid’s path and confirm the dispenser is not damaged
Dirty water or grit appears on clean dishes Filter or spray-arm openings contain residue Clean the filter and inspect the arm openings as directed by the manual
Water remains in cups or bowls Items were loaded level or with openings upward Angle them so water can drain during the final rinse and drying stage
Plastics are wet while other items are dry Plastic retains heat less effectively and may be outside the best rack position Use the permitted upper-rack position and rinse aid settings specified for the model
Glasses show chips or cracks Items touched, shifted, or were exposed to an unsuitable rack position Increase spacing, secure the glassware, and check the model’s delicate-item guidance

Clean the filter and spray arms

Follow the manual’s schedule and removal instructions for the filter. Rinse away trapped food rather than pushing debris deeper into the mesh. Check spray-arm holes for particles and clear them only by the method approved for your model. Refit every part securely before running another cycle.

Match the cycle to the soil

A short or light cycle may not remove baked-on food even when the load is correctly arranged. Select the heavier program recommended for that level of soil, and avoid packing the tub so tightly that the stronger spray still cannot reach every surface.

Model differences that can change the correct layout

Two dishwashers can have different spray-arm locations, tine angles, rack heights, and dispenser positions. One may direct a central jet upward through the lower rack; another may rely on several side jets. A loading diagram in a quick-start guide may apply only to selected models, not to every machine in a product family.

Before adapting a general arrangement, identify these features in your appliance:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Where each spray arm is located and how much clearance it needs.
  • Which tines fold or adjust and whether folding them changes support for heavy dishes.
  • Whether the upper rack can move vertically and what fits beneath it at each setting.
  • Whether the utensil basket has separators, a covered section, or a specified knife direction.
  • What the third rack is designed to hold and what height it leaves below.
  • Which plastics, coated pans, delicate materials, and oversized items the manual excludes.

When the general rules conflict with a model-specific diagram, use the diagram. Manufacturer instructions also determine detergent placement, rinse-aid settings, filter access, and safe cleaning methods.

A quick final inspection before pressing Start

  • Large food and hard debris have been scraped away.
  • Dirty surfaces face the spray rather than a rack wall or another dish.
  • No plates, bowls, or pans overlap or nest.
  • Cups, glasses, and plastics are stable, spaced, and angled for drainage.
  • Utensils are separated, and sharp pieces are positioned safely.
  • All spray arms rotate freely by hand.
  • The detergent dispenser can open fully.
  • No handle, utensil, or tall item touches the door, seal, or ceiling.
  • The chosen cycle matches the soil and the model’s permitted options.

This arrangement gives the dishwasher’s water, detergent, and heat the access they were designed to provide. If cleaning still fails after correcting spacing and clearance, move on to filter, spray-arm, detergent, and cycle checks rather than continually rearranging the same load.
