To listen to a video game soundtrack on YouTube while your phone is locked, use the YouTube mobile app with an eligible YouTube Premium account. Open Settings → Background & Downloads → Background Play, choose Always on, start the soundtrack video, and lock the screen. YouTube says this feature is available to signed-in Premium members in supported apps and locations. Premium Lite is a special case: its 2026 rollout covers most videos, but YouTube still identifies full Premium as the plan for background playback that includes music content, so Lite may not work for every soundtrack upload.
What you need for screen-off soundtrack listening
The feature you are looking for is called Background Play (also called background playback). It keeps a YouTube video’s audio running after you leave the app or turn off the display. You do not need a special player, a physical accessory, or a separate music download. You do need the right account, app, setting, and content type.
An eligible YouTube Premium account
YouTube’s Help documentation states: “Background Play is available on YouTube mobile apps when you’re signed in with your YouTube Premium membership account.” The membership must be active on the account currently selected in the YouTube app, and the feature must be available in your location. If several Google accounts are signed in, check the profile avatar before troubleshooting; paying for Premium on one account does not make another account eligible.

Premium Lite is not a guaranteed soundtrack solution
In an announcement dated February 24, 2026, The YouTube Team said Premium Lite subscribers would receive background play and downloads for most videos, rolling out over the following weeks in markets where Premium Lite is offered. The same announcement says full YouTube Premium remains the option for background playback that includes music content: YouTube Premium Lite gets background play and downloads.
Because a game soundtrack upload may be treated as music content, do not assume that every soundtrack video will continue under Lite. If you have Lite, check whether it is available in your country, read the plan’s current terms, and test the specific video. A Lite result on one long-form video does not establish that every soundtrack upload will behave the same way.
Headphones are optional output, not an entitlement
Earbuds, headphones, a car system, or external speakers can be the device through which you hear the audio, but they do not unlock Background Play. YouTube’s eligibility comes from the account and plan. The app’s Headphones or external speakers setting is a playback preference, not a substitute for Premium.
Use the official mobile app
The documented feature applies to YouTube’s mobile apps. A browser tab, embedded player, or third-party wrapper may present different controls and is not the setup described by YouTube Help. For a reliable test, open the installed YouTube app, sign in there, and begin playback from the normal video page.
How to turn on YouTube Background Play
Use the following procedure in the YouTube mobile app. Labels can receive minor changes as the app evolves, but the current YouTube Help path is the one below.
- Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet.
- Tap your profile picture and confirm that you are signed in to the Google account with the eligible YouTube Premium membership.
- Open Settings.
- Select Background & Downloads.
- Tap Background Play.
- Choose Always on. YouTube identifies this as the default choice. The other choices are Off and Headphones or external speakers.
- Play the video containing the soundtrack, then press your device’s power button to lock the screen. The audio should continue while the display is off.
YouTube documents the setting and its eligibility requirements in Use your YouTube Premium benefits. The setting applies to ordinary YouTube video playback in the mobile app; the Shorts player is specifically excluded.
What each Background Play choice does

If the goal is to hear a soundtrack with no visible video, Always on is the least restrictive of the three choices. Selecting it does not override an account that lacks the required membership or a video that is being handled as unsupported music content on your plan.

Test the exact soundtrack video before relying on it
Once the setting is enabled, test the particular upload you intend to use. Start playback from the normal video player, lock the screen, and wait a few seconds. If the audio continues, unlock the device and use the lock-screen media controls to pause, resume, or skip when your operating system exposes them.
A soundtrack video’s title is not enough to determine its treatment. For example, a long gameplay video with music in the background may be handled differently from an upload whose primary purpose is a soundtrack, an official music video, an Art Track, or a song cover. YouTube’s public guidance does not classify every user-uploaded game soundtrack individually. That is why testing the exact URL is safer than assuming that every video in a playlist has identical eligibility.
For a long listening session, test both the first video and at least one later item in the queue. A playlist can contain mixed formats, such as a full album upload followed by a Shorts clip or a music video. Background Play entitlement is evaluated by the account, player, and content being played; the playlist itself does not convert an ineligible item into an eligible one.

Troubleshoot playback that stops after locking the phone
Work through these checks in order. Each one addresses a different failure mode, so changing unrelated phone settings first is unlikely to help.
- Verify the active account. Open the profile menu and confirm that the selected account is the one with Premium. A family or shared-device setup can leave the app on a different account.
- Recheck Background Play. Go to Settings → Background & Downloads → Background Play and make sure it is not set to Off. If you deliberately chose Headphones or external speakers, connect the expected output before locking the display.
- Make sure you are not using Shorts. YouTube says Background Play is not available in the Shorts player. Open the full video page for the soundtrack instead of trying to lock a short-form clip.
- Check the plan and location. Full Premium is the stated option for background playback that includes music content. Lite availability is market-dependent, and its “most videos” wording does not guarantee every soundtrack upload.
- Test another ordinary long-form video. If another eligible video continues but the soundtrack does not, the problem is likely the specific content classification or plan limitation rather than the phone’s lock behavior.
- Check whether the video was actually playing. Start the video in the foreground and let it begin before pressing the power button. Locking an idle player cannot produce background audio.
- Return to the standard YouTube app. The documented feature applies to YouTube’s mobile apps. A browser tab, an embedded player, or a third-party wrapper may not expose the same membership and Background Play behavior.
- Check the output condition. If the menu is set to Headphones or external speakers, playback is intended for a connected output. Reconnect the headphones or speaker, or change the setting to Always on if you want the device’s regular speaker to be eligible.
- Compare the player type. If the failed item opened as a Short, return to search results and choose the regular long-form upload. The same song in a different player does not necessarily have the same background-play treatment.
If the account, setting, player type, and plan all look correct but one soundtrack still stops, record the result for that video rather than concluding that all YouTube background playback is broken. The content-specific distinction matters particularly for Premium Lite.
Background Play versus picture-in-picture
Background Play and picture-in-picture (PiP) solve different problems:

Choose Background Play when the screen should be completely dark, such as when the phone is in a pocket. Choose PiP when you want to see the video while using another app. PiP is not a way to bypass the plan requirement for a music video.
PiP also requires the video to remain in a visible mini-player until you dismiss it. If your goal is audio only, use Background Play directly rather than opening PiP and expecting it to behave identically on every device. YouTube specifically documents dismissal of the PiP window as the action that continues Background Play for Premium members.

Set up Android picture-in-picture if you want a floating player
This section is for Android users who want the video visible rather than fully screen-off. YouTube’s Android instructions use two separate controls: one in Android system settings and one inside YouTube.
- Open Android Settings.
- Go to Apps → YouTube → Advanced → Picture-in-picture.
- Allow picture-in-picture for YouTube.
- Open the YouTube app and go to Settings → Playback.
- Turn on the picture-in-picture option.
- Start the soundtrack video, then leave the YouTube app. The video should shrink into a floating window.
- To switch from the floating window to audio-only background playback, dismiss the PiP window. YouTube says dismissing PiP continues Background Play for Premium members.
Menu wording can vary by Android version and manufacturer. YouTube’s current Android guidance is Using picture-in-picture on your mobile device — Android phone & tablet. The same page says music content—including official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and user-generated song covers—is available in PiP only to Premium members. It does not state how every video game soundtrack upload will be classified.
There are therefore two separate checks for Android PiP: the operating system permission and the YouTube in-app toggle. Enabling only one may leave the floating window unavailable. Neither control replaces the Premium requirement for music content.

The general Premium procedure still applies: sign in to the eligible account, open YouTube’s settings, find Background & Downloads, and set Background Play to Always on. The available documentation establishes the general mobile-app requirement and setting, but it does not establish a separate, device-specific set of current iOS menu labels. Use the labels shown in your installed YouTube app instead of relying on an Android-only path.
After selecting Always on, start the soundtrack in the full video player and lock the iPhone or iPad. If playback stops, use the account, setting, Shorts, plan, and content checks above. Do not treat a missing Android PiP menu as evidence that iOS Background Play is unavailable; PiP configuration and screen-off audio are separate features.
If the menu names differ slightly on your iPhone or iPad, look for the Background Play control under the app’s settings rather than changing system audio settings. The important sequence is still the same: eligible account, full video player, Background Play enabled, then screen lock.
Soundtrack-specific limitations to keep in mind
Shorts are not a substitute for a full soundtrack upload
YouTube excludes the Shorts player from Background Play. A short clip may contain the same music as a long-form soundtrack upload, but the player type still matters. Find the full-length video or playlist entry when you need continuous listening with the display locked.
Music classification can affect lower-tier access
Premium Lite’s 2026 announcement uses “most videos,” not “all videos,” and separately reserves music-inclusive background playback for full Premium. There is no public rule in the cited guidance that labels every game soundtrack upload in advance. Treat Lite as something to verify video by video, not as a universal screen-off soundtrack pass.

Playlists do not change entitlement
Putting several soundtrack videos in a playlist can make them easier to queue, but a playlist does not grant Background Play access to videos that are otherwise ineligible. Each item still follows the account, plan, player, and content rules. If one item stops while the next continues, compare the individual videos rather than the playlist itself.
Downloads are a separate Premium Lite benefit
The February 24, 2026 announcement discusses background play and downloads together for most videos on Premium Lite. A download reference does not change the music-content qualification for background playback. If your objective is specifically screen-off listening, verify Background Play for the exact soundtrack video instead of assuming that an available download automatically guarantees it.

What if I have Premium but playback still stops?
Confirm the active account, set Background Play to Always on, start the full video before locking the device, avoid Shorts, and test another ordinary long-form video. If only one soundtrack fails, its content treatment may be the reason.
Are Android and iPhone instructions identical?
The general Premium Background Play procedure applies to both mobile platforms. Android has separate documented PiP controls in system settings and YouTube. Current iPhone and iPad menu labels can differ, so follow the labels in your installed app rather than copying the Android path.
