Short answer: there is no verified official public listening release for Michael Jackson’s unreleased Sonic the Hedgehog 3 demo in the sources available for this article. Sonic co-creator Naoto Ohshima recalled that Jackson sent SEGA a demo tape, but that account does not identify a current stream, download, soundtrack, or game edition that contains it.
The released game and the private demo are separate questions. SEGA documents Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origins, but its product page and manual do not say that the unreleased Jackson demo is included. Buying or playing that collection therefore is not a confirmed way to hear the recording.
Is Michael Jackson’s unreleased Sonic 3 music available to hear?
Not through an officially verified public release identified by the available evidence. The strongest direct account comes from Naoto Ohshima, a co-creator of Sonic, who described Jackson sending SEGA a demo tape. Ohshima’s recollection shows that a demo was made and delivered to SEGA; it does not establish that the tape was later published, streamed, sold, or placed in a currently available game.
That distinction matters because online discussions often combine three different things: a private demo described by a developer, music associated with the 1994 game, and later fan claims about Jackson’s involvement. They are not interchangeable. A recording can exist in an archive without having an authorized public release, and music in the shipped game cannot automatically be identified as the unreleased demo.

The careful conclusion is therefore: no official public release of the unreleased demo was verified in the sources reviewed. That wording does not prove that no private copy exists anywhere. It says that no rights-holder announcement, authorized soundtrack listing, or official game documentation establishes a legal public listening option.
What Naoto Ohshima said about the demo
The reported recording
In a Game Developer interview conducted in October 2013, Ohshima recalled that Michael Jackson sent SEGA a demo tape. He described gathering with others to listen to it and said Jackson created the music with his voice, humming and layered mouth sounds. Ohshima’s quoted recollection is:
“Michael Jackson was kind enough to make some music for the game. He sent us a demo tape, and we all gathered around to listen to it. And it was music, but… Michael Jackson had made all of it with his mouth.”

The full interview is available from Game Developer. Read in context, the statement is testimony about a demo sent to SEGA. It is not an announcement that the tape was released, nor does it provide a current location where the public can play the audio.
What the account does not establish
- It does not identify a public streaming service, download store, CD, vinyl release, or digital soundtrack containing the demo.
- It does not prove that every piece of music associated with Sonic 3 was written or recorded by Jackson.
- It does not show that the demo survived in a form that can legally be distributed today.
- It does not establish that the demo is included in any modern Sonic game collection.
The Independent also reports Ohshima’s hummed-demo account and notes uncertainty about the extent of Jackson’s involvement and the lack of a game credit. Its coverage is useful context, but it likewise does not identify an authorized public release: The Independent’s report.
Why Sonic 3’s released soundtrack is a different matter
The question about an “unreleased” demo should not be answered by pointing to ordinary gameplay audio. A released cartridge, reissue, soundtrack, or collection contains the audio that its publisher chose to ship. A private demo sent during development is a separate work unless a reliable source explicitly connects the two.

This separation prevents a common error: treating similarities in melodies, fan analysis, or a modern arrangement as proof that listeners have found the original tape. Such comparisons may be interesting, but they do not replace a release notice, authenticated archival source, or rights-holder confirmation.
Why accounts about Jackson’s role conflict
Published accounts do not agree on what, if anything, connected Jackson’s work to the final game. Ohshima’s recollection establishes that a demo was sent to SEGA. A separate report on former SEGA executive Roger Hector says Hector maintained that Jackson-associated contributions did not make it into the final game. These statements can both be reported without pretending that the historical dispute is settled. A demo may have been reviewed internally and then omitted, altered, or replaced before release. Conversely, claims that parts of the shipped soundtrack resemble Jackson’s work do not by themselves prove that the private tape was used. No source cited here supplies a complete, authoritative cue sheet matching the demo to specific final-game tracks.
For readers, the practical implication is simple: do not use a disputed attribution as evidence that an unreleased recording is publicly accessible. The existence of a controversy is not a release mechanism.
Does Sonic Origins include the unreleased recording?
SEGA’s official Sonic Origins page identifies Sonic 3 & Knuckles as one of the games in the collection and lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and the Epic Games Store among supported platforms. SEGA’s official manual describes the included game and how the collection works.

Neither official document identifies an unreleased Michael Jackson demo as a playable track, bonus recording, music-player item, or archival extra. On that documentation, purchasing the collection gives you the released game experience; it is not a confirmed way to listen to the private tape.
What about Sonic Origins Plus?
SEGA’s regional purchase guide describes a physical Sonic Origins Plus edition. The guide is a product-purchase resource, not an announcement of a previously unreleased recording: SEGA’s purchase guide. Regional editions and retailer stock can change, so check the current listing for your country if you want the game itself.
Nothing in that guide, the product page, or the manual says that the Jackson demo is included. A physical disc or cartridge can preserve the released game while still containing no private development tape. Treat “Plus” as a game-edition label, not as evidence of an archival music release.
What the 1994 release date does—and does not—tell you
SEGA’s history material identifies the original Japanese releases of Sonic 3 as taking place in 1994. That date places the game in its original development and publication period, but it does not provide a listening source for the demo. A game’s age also does not mean that development recordings automatically enter the public domain or become free to copy.

What “demo tape” means here
Ohshima’s wording supports a limited description: Jackson sent SEGA a tape containing a demo made with his voice, humming and mouth sounds. It does not specify the tape’s length, number of pieces, recording equipment, final arrangement, lyrics, file format or current location. Those details should not be filled in with assumptions from fan videos or later interpretations.
A development demo can be an idea intended for a composer, programmer or producer rather than a finished game asset. It might be revised, rejected, separated into musical elements or used only as a reference. Without an authenticated copy and documentation, listeners cannot know whether a file circulating online is the complete tape, an excerpt, a recreation or something unrelated.
What you can legitimately do if you want to investigate the demo
Because no verified public source is identified, there is no reliable “play” button or purchase path to provide. You can still check future announcements and evaluate claims methodically.
- Start with the rights holder’s announcement. Look for a release notice from SEGA, Michael Jackson’s estate or an authorized music publisher. A genuine announcement should name the recording, format, territory, release date and rights authorization.
- Check the exact product description. If a game collection or soundtrack is claimed to contain the demo, confirm that the listing says “Michael Jackson demo” or otherwise identifies the recording. A generic reference to Sonic 3 music is not enough.
- Look for catalog and credit information. An authorized release normally has track metadata, liner notes, copyright information or an archival description. Missing provenance is a reason to treat an upload as unverified, not as proof of authenticity.
- Compare the source with the historical claim. Ohshima described a tape made with Jackson’s mouth and voice. A file presented as a polished final master, a fan recreation, or a song extracted from gameplay is not automatically that tape.
- Confirm your region and edition. A release could be limited by country, platform or format. Verify that the announcement applies where you live and that the edition you can obtain is the one named in the announcement.
- Prefer authorized playback. Use the publisher’s store, an authorized label, an officially licensed physical release or a platform directly named by the rights holder. Do not assume that a file-hosting link is licensed because it uses a familiar title.
How to assess an online audio upload
Search results and video platforms may contain files labeled “Michael Jackson Sonic 3,” but a title is not authentication. Before playing or sharing one, check the uploader’s identity, the stated source, the recording’s provenance and whether the rights holder authorized publication. An upload that provides no chain of custody could be a fan edit, a recreation, an unrelated Jackson recording, an arrangement derived from game music, or a mislabeled development asset.
Do not download copyrighted material from an unauthorized source merely because an official release has not been found. The absence of a verified release does not create permission to redistribute a recording. If an upload claims to be a leak, its legality and authenticity are both uncertain; repeating the claim as fact can make a rumor look like documented history.

If your goal is to hear the released Sonic 3 music
You can legally play the released Sonic 3 & Knuckles version through an edition of Sonic Origins supported in your region. That route lets you experience the commercial release, but it should not be described as access to Jackson’s unreleased demo.
Keep the purpose clear when choosing a product:
- Want the released game? Use an official digital or physical edition listed by SEGA and verify platform and regional availability.
- Want the unreleased demo? No official public listening source is verified here, so a game purchase cannot satisfy that request on the evidence available.
- Want historical background? Read Ohshima’s interview and the reporting that documents the conflicting accounts, then distinguish recollection from confirmed release data.
How to compare claims about specific tracks
When a post names a particular Sonic 3 cue, ask what kind of claim it makes. “This melody resembles a Jackson song” is an interpretation. “A former developer remembers Jackson’s contribution being removed” is testimony. “This officially issued soundtrack credits Jackson” would be release documentation. These categories have different evidentiary weight and should not be presented as equivalent.

A useful checklist is to separate composition, performance and attribution. A melody could have been suggested by Jackson, arranged by another musician, programmed for the game and released without a Jackson credit. Conversely, a private demo could contain ideas that never appear in the final cartridge. Unless a source connects all of those steps, the safest description is that the relationship remains disputed.

Sonic Origins is documented as a collection that includes the released Sonic 3 & Knuckles game. Its platform list covers Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Those facts answer where the commercial game may be available, subject to region and current storefront status; they do not answer whether a development tape is present.
The same applies to the physical Sonic Origins Plus edition described in SEGA’s regional guide. “Physical” describes the way the game product is sold. It does not imply that unreleased studio material was added. Check the contents list and official description for any edition you consider, and do not infer bonus recordings from the word “Plus.”

What would count as confirmation in the future?
A future source could change the answer, but it would need to identify the recording precisely. Strong confirmation would include an announcement by an authorized rights holder; a named release with a catalog number or official store listing; clear liner notes or archival documentation linking the audio to the demo; and an authorized way for listeners to obtain or stream it.
A claim that “the demo has leaked” would answer a different question from “where can I listen legally?” Even if an authentic tape surfaced, its public distribution could still require permission. Likewise, a newly discovered file that sounds similar to known Sonic 3 music would need provenance before it could be identified as Ohshima’s reported tape.
Until documentation of that kind appears, the most accurate answer remains that the demo is historically reported but not publicly released through a verified official channel.
Bottom line for listeners
Naoto Ohshima’s account is evidence that Michael Jackson sent SEGA a demo tape. It is not evidence that the public can currently stream or buy that recording. SEGA’s official documentation confirms Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origins, but does not say the unreleased demo is included.
