You can listen to an ebook in two fundamentally different ways: text-to-speech (TTS) reads the ebook’s text with a device voice, while an audiobook is a separately produced audio edition, usually narrated by a person. The right steps depend on the format you own, the app holding it, the book’s permissions and typesetting, and your device’s supported speech language.
Before changing settings, identify the item in front of you. A Kindle or Play Books ebook needs a reading feature such as Assistive Reader or Read Aloud. A Libby audiobook needs Libby’s audio player. The same title may appear as separate ebook and audiobook loans, with separate availability.
First, identify what you have
An ebook and an audiobook are not interchangeable files. A retailer may sell them as separate editions, and a library may lend them as separate catalog items. If you open an ebook, you need a reading app with TTS or a screen reader. If you borrow an audiobook, you use the service’s audio player instead.
Text-to-speech for an ebook
TTS converts the displayed ebook text into synthesized speech. You can usually change the voice, language and speed through the device or app. It is useful when you already own the ebook, but availability can depend on publisher permissions, book formatting and the device’s speech engine. The voice is generated as you read; it is not the same performance as a professionally narrated edition.

A narrated audiobook
An audiobook is an audio recording, not a spoken version generated on demand. It may have a professional narrator, sound design or multiple voices. You must obtain or borrow that edition separately; having the ebook does not guarantee access to its audiobook. In a library catalog, search for both formats by title and author rather than assuming an ebook loan includes audio.
Prepare before you press play
Three checks prevent most failed attempts. First, note where the book lives: Google Play Books, a Kindle app or device, or Libby. Second, identify whether you want synthesized speech or a human-narrated recording. Third, check the title’s eligibility: Play Books may hide Read Aloud when a publisher disables it, while Kindle Assistive Reader depends on Enhanced Typesetting and a supported speech language.
Also check the device’s installed text-to-speech voices. Play Books on Android and Kindle Assistive Reader in apps use the operating system’s speech engine. If the language or voice is not installed at the device level, changing a setting inside the book will not create one. Keep the app updated enough to show the current menu labels, but expect labels and locations to vary slightly by platform.

Which listening route fits your device?
| Route | Where it works | What you hear | Checks before you start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Play Books Read Aloud | Play Books mobile app; the documented procedure is for Android | Ebook text through TTS | The book must be in flowing-text view and the publisher must allow Read Aloud. A natural-sounding voice needs internet access. |
| Kindle Assistive Reader in an app | Kindle apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and Fire tablets | Kindle ebook text through the operating system’s TTS | The title needs Enhanced Typesetting and a speech language supported by the device. Availability also varies by app and book source. |
| Kindle Assistive Reader on an e-reader | Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe and Kindle Colorsoft | Kindle ebook text | The book must use Enhanced Typesetting. Amazon lists English, Spanish, French, German and Italian for this feature. |
| Libby audiobook player | Libby app | A narrated audiobook | Your library must offer the audiobook and you must borrow it. |
| Libby screen-reader mode | iOS VoiceOver, Android TalkBack and desktop screen readers such as NVDA and JAWS | Ebook text spoken by the screen reader | Use the ebook reader’s Read From Here function or the platform’s continuous-reading command. On iOS, Libby requires VoiceOver for this mode. |
The table also shows why buying an e-reader is not an automatic solution. A phone or computer you already own may provide the needed speech feature, while a dedicated Kindle helps only when its generation, book typesetting and language support line up with your titles.
Listen to an ebook with Google Play Books on Android
Google Play Books’ Read Aloud feature speaks eligible ebook text in the mobile app. Google states that it requires flowing-text view, and publishers can disable the option for individual books. As Google’s help wording puts it, “Not all books have this option.”
Start Read Aloud
- Open the ebook in the Play Books mobile app.
- Switch the book to flowing-text view. Read Aloud is not available from every page layout.
- Tap the page to enter skim mode.
- Open the menu in the top-right corner and choose Read aloud.
- Tap the screen again when you need the playback controls.
Flowing-text view is important because some ebooks are laid out like fixed pages. If the command is absent, changing font or page display settings will not override a publisher restriction; test the view first, then check the title’s eligibility.
Make books start speaking automatically
In Play Books, open your profile picture, choose Play Books settings, and turn on Automatically read aloud. With this setting enabled, a supported book can begin reading when it opens instead of requiring you to start the command each time. It does not make an unsupported title eligible.

Change voice, language or speed
Play Books uses Android’s default text-to-speech app. Change the voice, installed languages and speech rate in Android Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech output. Those device settings affect the voice you hear in Play Books. If a book uses a language you have not installed, add that language through the device’s available voice options before reopening the book.
Use the natural voice option offline
Play Books offers a More natural reading voice option. Google says that voice requires an internet connection. If you need offline playback, turn that option off and use the installed device voice instead. This is a setting choice, not a different ebook download.
If Read Aloud is missing
- Confirm that you opened the title in the Play Books mobile app, not a different reader.
- Switch to flowing-text view and check the top-right menu again.
- Check whether the publisher has disabled Read Aloud for that book.
- Verify that Android has a text-to-speech engine and a voice for the book’s language.
Google also maintains an iPhone and iPad help page for reading aloud with Read Aloud or VoiceOver. Because the exact iOS procedure can change with app releases, check the current Play Books help inside the app before following Android-specific menu paths on an Apple device.
Use Kindle Assistive Reader in a phone, tablet or computer app
Kindle Assistive Reader reads supported Kindle book text with the operating system’s TTS voice. Amazon lists support in Kindle apps for iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Mac and Fire tablets. Voice quality, installed languages and playback behavior therefore depend partly on the device’s speech engine.
Recommended Free Tools
Turn it on
- Open the Kindle book in a supported Kindle app.
- Tap or select the top-center area of the page to show reading controls.
- Open reading settings by choosing Aa.
- Select More, then enable Assistive Reader.
- Tap the page to reveal the playback controls. Use them to play or pause, change speed or rewind 30 seconds.
- To begin at a particular passage, long-press a word and choose Play.
Starting from a selected word is useful when you are returning to a chapter or checking a passage. The rewind control gives you a short 30-second jump rather than requiring you to drag through the text.
Why the option may not appear
Open the book’s detail page and look for Enhanced Typesetting: Enabled. Amazon’s app documentation also requires a speech language supported by the device’s TTS engine. A title without Enhanced Typesetting, or a title whose language is unavailable on the device, may not expose Assistive Reader.
Amazon says eligible purchased Kindle books, Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading loans, other official Kindle partner sources and Family Library shares can work with the feature. That does not mean every Kindle title from every source is compatible; eligibility still depends on the specific book and app. A subscription or shared loan therefore does not remove the title-level checks.

Adjust the voice at the device level
Assistive Reader in the apps uses the operating system’s TTS. Install or select a different voice in your phone, tablet or Mac accessibility settings, then reopen the Kindle reader if the new voice does not take effect immediately. The available languages and naturalness of the speech are limited by the operating system, not by a single universal Kindle voice.

A dedicated e-reader is optional. It makes sense only if your model supports Assistive Reader, the book has Enhanced Typesetting and the listed speech languages meet your needs. Amazon’s current help identifies Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe and Kindle Colorsoft as supported e-reader families. Older or different models should not be assumed to offer the same control.
Supported languages and book requirement
For the e-reader feature, Amazon lists English, Spanish, French, German and Italian. The title must use Enhanced Typesetting. A different Kindle generation, an unsupported language or a book with incompatible typesetting can prevent Assistive Reader from appearing even when another Kindle app can read a different title.
Start playback on the e-reader
- Open a compatible Kindle book.
- Tap Aa to open reading settings.
- Choose More.
- Select Assistive Reader.
- Use the on-screen controls to play, pause, change speed or rewind.
Amazon’s broader accessibility information also describes synchronized text highlighting for Assistive Reader. Highlighting can help you follow the spoken position, but the exact presentation can vary by device generation and software version. If highlighting or a control looks different from instructions shown online, verify the model and software before concluding that the book is unsupported.
Use Libby: audiobook playback versus ebook speech
Libby offers two separate experiences. Its audiobook player plays a library’s narrated audio edition. Its accessibility support lets a screen reader speak ebook text. Opening an ebook and expecting the audiobook player to read it will not work.
Play a borrowed audiobook
- Open Libby and go to Shelf.
- Open Loans.
- Select the audiobook and choose Open Audiobook.
- Press Play.
- Use the player’s speed control or sleep timer when needed.
The library must own or license the audiobook, and your loan must be active. If the audiobook is unavailable, search the catalog for the ebook and use a supported screen-reader route instead, or place a hold according to your library’s lending rules. A separate ebook loan does not create an audio loan or unlock the narrator’s recording.
Read a Libby ebook with a screen reader
Libby documents support for Apple VoiceOver, Android TalkBack and desktop screen readers including NVDA and JAWS. These tools can help you browse and borrow titles, read ebooks and listen to audiobooks.

- Open the ebook in Libby’s reader.
- Use Read From Here to begin speaking at the current location, or use the screen reader’s continuous-reading command.
- Move through the book with the screen reader’s navigation commands rather than the audiobook player controls.
On iOS, Libby specifically directs readers to use VoiceOver for this ebook-reading mode. Apple’s separate Spoken Content feature is not the method Libby identifies for Read From Here. On Android, use TalkBack’s reading commands; on a desktop, use the continuous-reading command supplied by NVDA, JAWS or another supported screen reader.
Listening on a computer
Kindle on Mac
The Kindle app for Mac is one of the apps Amazon lists for Assistive Reader. Open a supported book, use the top-center reading controls, choose Aa > More > Assistive Reader, and start playback. The Mac’s installed speech language and voice determine what you hear. If the control is missing, return to the title detail page and verify Enhanced Typesetting before changing Mac speech settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLibby on desktop
Libby supports desktop screen readers such as NVDA and JAWS for ebook reading. Open the ebook in the browser-based Libby reader, invoke Read From Here or the screen reader’s continuous-reading command, and navigate with your screen reader. This is TTS of the ebook text, not a narrated audiobook stream. The screen reader also remains the tool for moving between controls and browsing other titles.
Why a computer may be enough
If you already have a Mac or Windows computer with a supported screen reader, or a Mac with the listed Kindle app, you do not need to buy a dedicated e-reader merely to hear text. A separate e-reader is worthwhile only when its supported models, languages, typesetting requirements and reading controls fit your routine better than the apps you already use. There is no need to add a headset, speaker or stand just to make these documented features work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot in the right order
No Read Aloud, Assistive Reader or play control
- Check the format first. An audiobook opens in an audio player; TTS controls apply to ebook text.
- Confirm that your app or device supports the feature. Play Books Read Aloud is documented for its mobile app, while Kindle coverage differs between apps and e-readers.
- Check title restrictions. Play Books publishers can turn off Read Aloud; Kindle requires eligible titles and Enhanced Typesetting.
- On Libby, confirm whether you are trying to use the audiobook player or a screen-reader reading mode.
The voice uses the wrong language or sounds unsuitable
For Play Books on Android, open Accessibility > Text-to-speech output and select an installed voice and language. Kindle Assistive Reader in apps likewise relies on the operating system’s TTS engine. If the required language is not installed or supported, the app cannot supply it independently.
Play Books will not read without Wi-Fi or mobile data
Turn off More natural reading voice. Google identifies that option as internet-dependent; the standard installed device voice is the offline alternative.

You want a human narrator instead of synthesized speech
Search your library catalog or retailer for the audiobook edition by title and author. In Libby, borrow the audiobook when it is available, then use Shelf > Loans > Open Audiobook. An ebook loan alone does not create an audiobook loan.
The title works in one place but not another
Treat that as a compatibility difference, not proof that the book is universally enabled. Kindle app support and Kindle e-reader support have different model and language requirements, and Play Books availability can be controlled by the publisher. Recheck the exact title, app, device generation, typesetting status and speech language in that order.
A practical decision checklist
- Already own a Google Play ebook on Android: Try flowing-text view and Read Aloud. If it is unavailable, the publisher may have disabled it.
- Read Kindle books on a phone, tablet or Mac: Check Enhanced Typesetting, supported language and the Aa > More > Assistive Reader menu.
- Own a Kindle e-reader: Verify that it is an 11th-generation-or-newer model, Kindle Scribe or Kindle Colorsoft, and that the book uses Enhanced Typesetting.
- Borrow through a library: Search separately for an audiobook and an ebook. Use Libby’s audiobook player for narration or a screen reader for ebook text.
- Use an iPhone or iPad with Libby: Choose VoiceOver for Read From Here.
- Use a computer: Kindle for Mac can use Assistive Reader; Libby desktop can use NVDA, JAWS or another supported screen reader.
- Need offline Play Books listening: Use the installed device voice and disable the more natural online voice.
- Choosing whether to buy an e-reader: First test the app or screen-reader route you already have. Purchase a compatible Kindle only if its supported generation, language list and book typesetting meet your needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my phone read an ebook out loud?
Yes, when the ebook and app support TTS. Android’s Google Play Books can use Read Aloud in flowing-text view, and Kindle apps can use Assistive Reader for eligible books. The device’s installed voice and language affect the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is listening in Libby the same as reading an ebook aloud?
No. Libby’s audiobook player plays a separately licensed narrated recording. To hear ebook text, use a screen reader: VoiceOver on iOS, TalkBack on Android, or a supported desktop reader such as NVDA or JAWS.
Why does my Kindle not show Assistive Reader?
Check the title page for Enhanced Typesetting: Enabled, confirm the book’s language is supported by the device, and verify that your app or e-reader model is supported. Not every Kindle title or model exposes the feature.
Can I use Libby Read From Here with iPhone Spoken Content?
Libby’s documented iOS method uses VoiceOver for Read From Here, not Apple’s separate Spoken Content feature.
Can I listen to a Kindle ebook on a dedicated e-reader?
Amazon lists Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe and Kindle Colorsoft for Assistive Reader. The book must use Enhanced Typesetting, and the listed e-reader languages are English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Can I listen offline in Google Play Books?
Use the standard installed device voice. Google says the More natural reading voice option requires an internet connection, so turn that option off for offline Read Aloud.
The Bottom Line
Start by separating ebook TTS from audiobook playback. On Android, try Google Play Books in flowing-text view; for eligible Kindle titles, use Assistive Reader in the Kindle app or on a supported Kindle e-reader. In Libby, use Open Audiobook for a narrated edition or VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA or JAWS to read ebook text. If a control is missing, check the exact format, title permission, Enhanced Typesetting, device generation and speech language before buying new hardware.
