Select the image in the Confluence Cloud editor, choose Link in its floating toolbar, and enter a Confluence page or external URL. The image will then act as the link. Add alt text separately if the image needs a text description for readers using screen readers.
Insert or select the image
Open the Confluence Cloud page or live doc in the editor. To add an image, use the editor toolbar or type /image, then choose or upload the image. If the image is already on the page, select it directly.
Make the image clickable
- Select the image in the editor. Its floating toolbar appears.
- Choose Link from that toolbar.
- Enter the destination: a Confluence page or an external URL.
- Confirm the destination in the editor. The image is now linked.
The image-specific method is to select the image and use its floating toolbar. For ordinary text links, Atlassian also documents selecting text or positioning the cursor and using the toolbar’s Link button; the keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+K on Windows or Cmd+K on Mac.
Add alt text separately
A clickable image does not automatically provide a useful text description. Select the image and choose Edit alt text in the floating toolbar to add context for people who rely on screen readers. Atlassian Support advises that supplemental text should accompany media so it provides context and meaning to all users.

If you cannot add an image
Uploading an image may require Add Attachments permission for the relevant space. That permission concerns upload options; Atlassian’s documentation does not establish it as a requirement for linking an image that is already inserted.
Use the current Cloud editor controls
Do not use legacy wiki markup as the standard procedure for the current Cloud editor. Atlassian’s wiki-markup instructions are for the legacy editor and state that the new editor does not support markup. If the toolbar in your tenant differs, follow the controls displayed in the current editor.
