There is no single control established by Meta’s published guidance that blocks every use of AI chats and account activity. To reduce particular kinds of retention or personalization, limit what you share, delete AI chats and saved memories separately, use Incognito Chat if it is available, and review account connections and the current “Activity from other businesses” setting. These steps are not a universal opt-out from AI training or personalization.
What Meta AI may learn from chats and activity
Meta describes several different data flows, and the controls depend on which one you mean. An interaction you have directly with Meta AI is different from a memory saved from a conversation, activity a business shares with Meta, or information associated across accounts connected in Accounts Center. Treating all of these as “chat history” can lead to the wrong privacy setting.
In its October 1, 2025 announcement, “Improving Your Recommendations on Our Apps With AI at Meta,” Meta said that, beginning December 16, 2025, interactions with its AI features—including text and voice conversations—would be used to personalize content and ad recommendations in most regions. Meta’s example was that asking about hiking could influence recommendations for hiking groups, trail posts, and hiking-boot ads. This describes personalization, not necessarily model training on every conversation.

That example is useful because it shows what “personalization” can mean in practice: a subject you ask the assistant about may be reflected in recommendations elsewhere in Meta’s products. The announcement does not say that every mention will produce a particular ad, or that a single conversation determines what you see. It describes a potential input to recommendation systems. Meta says Ads Preferences and other feed controls can affect what people see, but those controls should not be mistaken for a way to erase the original conversation or block every use of AI interactions.

Meta also said it does not use specified sensitive topics—including health, religion, political views, sexual orientation, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, and trade-union membership—to show ads. That stated limitation is not an opt-out from all content personalization. Nor should it be treated as a guarantee that mentioning a sensitive subject in a chat has no other handling or retention implications.
There is another source of signals beyond what you type or say to Meta AI. Meta says information can be used across Meta Company Products for accounts a person chooses to add to the same Accounts Center. Separately, businesses may share information about activity on their own sites and apps, such as purchases or games played. These are different sources with different settings. Account linking is not the same as business-shared activity, and neither is the same as deleting an AI conversation.
Choose a control for the data you want to limit

Use the table as a matching guide, not a promise that every control appears for every person. Meta says features and controls may vary by app, account, and country; labels can also change. Before taking action, identify whether you want to manage a chat, a saved memory, recommendations, linked accounts, business-shared activity, or an objection to a specified training use. One setting may not affect the others.

1. Keep sensitive information out of ordinary AI chats
Do not enter passwords, financial identifiers, health details, or other sensitive information into a standard Meta AI conversation unless you are comfortable sharing it with the service. This is a practical precaution, not a claim that any specific detail will definitely be used for a particular purpose.
Think about whether the assistant needs the identifying detail to answer your question. For example, you can ask for general information about budgeting without sending an account number, or request general health information without including your full name and other identifying details. If a task requires personal context, provide only what is necessary and avoid credentials, payment-card details, or information that would let someone access an account.
This habit is useful regardless of which setting you later change. Controls such as deleting a conversation or adjusting recommendations address particular actions or uses; they are not a substitute for deciding what to disclose in the first place. If you already shared information you no longer want in a conversation, consider the deletion options described below, while keeping in mind that the cited help guidance does not promise that deletion reverses every separate process.
2. Delete an AI chat or request deletion of shared information
WhatsApp Help’s “How to organize your chats with Meta AI” describes deleting individual chats with Meta AI and requesting deletion of information previously shared with Meta AI. Use the available chat-management or deletion option in your app, or follow the Help Center instructions for your account. The cited guidance does not promise that deleting a conversation also reverses every other use or retention process, so treat it as cleanup rather than a universal opt-out.

Be clear about the action you want. Deleting an individual chat is a way to remove that conversation from the chat interface; requesting deletion of information previously shared with Meta AI is a distinct option described by WhatsApp Help. If the app presents both, read the confirmation and choose the action that matches your goal. Do not assume that clearing a chat list, deleting a conversation, or removing a saved memory all mean the same thing.
It is also important not to infer more than the help instructions say. The cited guidance supports a cleanup action and a deletion request, but it does not say that either is a universal switch for model training, recommendation personalization, or all retention. If you need to know what a particular deletion request covers in your account, consult the current Help Center wording and the confirmation shown in the app.
3. Remove saved memories separately
Meta’s January 27, 2025 announcement, “Building Toward a Smarter, More Personalized Assistant,” described memory of certain details shared in one-to-one WhatsApp and Messenger conversations and said people could delete those memories. Look for a memory-management control if it is offered in your app. Deleting the visible chat and deleting a saved memory are separate actions; availability can vary.
A memory is not simply another name for the conversation transcript. A detail saved for later personalization may remain relevant to the assistant even when you have separately managed the visible chat, which is why both controls matter if your aim is to clear both. Conversely, removing a memory should not be described as deleting the underlying conversation. Check the specific control’s description and manage each item separately when the interface offers both.
Meta’s announcement refers to certain details shared in one-to-one conversations, not necessarily every interaction or every Meta AI interface. Do not assume the same memory feature is available in every country, account, or app. If you cannot find a memory option, that does not prove a memory was saved; it means you should not claim to have used a control that is not available in your interface.
4. Use Incognito Chat only if you can confirm it is available
In a May 13, 2026 announcement, “Introducing a Completely Private Way to Chat With AI,” Meta described Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app as a temporary conversation processed in a secure environment that Meta says it cannot access. Meta also said messages disappear by default and the chat is not saved. The announcement described a gradual rollout over the coming months, so do not assume the option exists for every account. Check the app for the feature before relying on it. These privacy assurances are Meta’s product claims, not independent security-test results.
Incognito Chat is different from deleting an ordinary conversation after the fact. Meta described it as a temporary mode with messages that disappear by default and a chat that is not saved. That makes availability and correct mode selection important: verify that you are actually in Incognito Chat before entering anything you would not put in an ordinary chat. If you do not see the option, do not assume that an ordinary conversation has the same properties.

Also keep the scope of the announcement in view. It described Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app and said rollout would be gradual. It does not establish that the feature is present on every Meta platform, that all accounts have access, or that use of it changes unrelated account-level personalization settings. Meta’s description of a secure environment and its inability to access the conversation is a company claim, not an independent audit result.

Check Accounts Center connections
Meta says information can be used across Meta Company Products for accounts a person chooses to add to the same Accounts Center. Its October 2025 announcement gave WhatsApp as an example: if a WhatsApp account is not added to Accounts Center, WhatsApp AI interactions will not be used to personalize experiences across different Meta accounts. Open Accounts Center and inspect the accounts actually listed there; do not assume that every Meta app is linked or isolated.
This is a cross-account personalization point, not a general statement that an account is invisible to Meta or that no information is handled within the service where you used AI. The example is specifically about whether WhatsApp AI interactions are used to personalize experiences across different Meta accounts when WhatsApp is not added to Accounts Center. If you are trying to limit that cross-account connection, inspect the account list itself rather than relying on assumptions about which apps you use together.
Review the listed connections periodically, especially if you have recently added an account or changed how you use Meta products. If an account is not shown, that is different from deleting chats or saved memories in that account. If an account is shown, the presence of the connection does not by itself tell you exactly what a particular interaction will affect; use Meta’s current explanation alongside the actual list of linked accounts.
Find the current business-activity control
Meta’s June 9, 2026 announcement, “Better Personalization and Changes to Controls for Your Activity From Other Businesses,” says information businesses already share about activity on their sites—such as purchases or games played—would be used for more than ads, including feed content and AI responses. Meta said it is expanding “Activity from other businesses” and discontinuing the older “Your activity off Meta technologies” control. Check Settings or Accounts Center for the live label and description, because the setting is changing. This is a control for information shared by other businesses; it is not the control for direct Meta AI messages.
The change matters if you used the older setting name or remember an earlier description. Meta says the older “Your activity off Meta technologies” control is being discontinued as it expands “Activity from other businesses.” Do not assume that a saved bookmark, an old help page, or remembered menu label is still the live control. Look at the current description in Settings or Accounts Center and confirm what activity it covers before changing it.
Businesses may share activity such as purchases or games played on their sites. Meta’s June 2026 announcement says the expanding control concerns uses beyond advertising, including feed content and AI responses. It does not turn this setting into a control for the text or voice conversation you send directly to Meta AI. If your concern covers both outside-business activity and direct AI chats, review both areas rather than treating one setting as a complete solution.

Can you opt out of Meta AI training?
Training and personalization are different. Training means using data to develop or improve models; personalization means using signals to tailor a person’s recommendations or responses. Meta’s announcements discuss both, but their described scope and controls differ. Deleting an AI chat should not be represented as opting out of training, and a setting that reduces recommendations should not be represented as blocking all training.
Meta’s April 2025 announcement, “Making AI Work Harder for Europeans,” updated March 27, 2026, describes an objection process for EU users concerning specified uses of public content and AI interactions for model training. Meta says private messages are not used to train its AIs unless a person chooses to share them with an AI feature. The process is specific to the stated EU context; it should not be treated as a global control. If you are in the EU, consult Meta’s current objection information and check whether the described process applies to your account and the data in question.
The terms matter. If your question is whether you can stop a recommendation from being tailored to you, Meta points to Ads Preferences and other feed controls for what people see, and its business-activity announcement describes a setting for activity shared by other businesses. If your question is whether data is used to develop or improve models, the EU objection process is a separate matter with a stated geographic scope. These controls do not substitute for one another.
Do not assume that an objection form applies outside the EU, to every category of information, or to every future AI feature. Likewise, do not interpret the statement about private messages as saying that content you deliberately send to Meta AI is never processed: Meta’s wording expressly distinguishes messages not shared with an AI feature from content a person chooses to share with one. Review the current process and its eligibility language if you intend to submit an objection.
Can Meta AI read your private WhatsApp chats?
The available statements do not support saying that Meta AI automatically reads every private WhatsApp conversation. Meta’s EU training statement says private messages are not used to train its AIs unless someone chooses to share them with an AI feature. A message or detail you deliberately send to Meta AI is therefore different from a private conversation that you do not share with the assistant. This training statement does not answer every question about WhatsApp data handling, nor does it mean that content shared directly with an AI feature is outside the service’s handling.
Keep the distinction precise: the cited statement concerns training use and qualifies that private messages are not used unless shared with an AI feature. It is not a blanket statement about every kind of data processing across WhatsApp, and it is geographically described in Meta’s announcement for the EU context. A reader should not infer either that Meta AI reads every private chat or that anything intentionally sent to the assistant is excluded from handling.

How to check whether a control is available
- Open the relevant app’s settings. Look for chat management, memory, or AI conversation options for the specific Meta AI conversation you want to manage.
- Check Accounts Center. Review connected accounts and search the current settings descriptions for “Activity from other businesses.” Labels and availability may differ by app, account, and country.
- Confirm the action and its scope. Distinguish deleting a chat from deleting a memory, adjusting personalization, using a temporary chat, and objecting to a specified training use.
- Verify the result in the app. Do not rely on a feature or label described in an announcement if it is not present in your account. Meta’s Help Center and the controls shown in your app are the practical references for current availability.
Because controls change, use the screen in front of you as the final check. A rollout announcement can describe an upcoming feature before it reaches your account; the absence of an option means you should not rely on it. Conversely, a control’s presence does not automatically tell you that it covers other data sources. Read the description, note whether it refers to chats, saved memories, account connections, or business-shared activity, and keep separate track of the actions you have taken.

Does Meta use AI chats for ads?
Meta said AI interactions, including text and voice conversations, would be used to personalize content and ad recommendations in most regions beginning December 16, 2025. Its hiking example describes how a question about a topic could influence recommendations. That does not mean every AI chat produces an ad or that an ad preference setting erases the chat. Meta says Ads Preferences and feed controls can change what people see; they are personalization controls, not a universal deletion or training opt-out.
How do I stop Meta AI from learning about me?
