Start with three layers: restrict the app’s phone permissions, turn off optional data-sharing controls in the app and automaker account, then review privacy and connectivity settings in the vehicle itself. Finally, use the automaker’s current privacy channel to change consent or request access and deletion. Do not assume one switch stops every data flow: a connected vehicle, account and service may continue to process information independently of the phone app.

Menus and consequences differ by automaker, vehicle, model year, country and connected-service enrollment. Before disabling a control, read its description and note which feature—such as remote start, vehicle location, diagnostics, navigation or emergency assistance—may stop working.

Why the phone app is only one part of the data flow

A companion app can display location, send remote commands and report driving information, but the app is not necessarily the component that gathers all of it. The vehicle may have its own cellular or GPS connection; the automaker account links the vehicle to your identity; and a connected service may process or share information on behalf of both. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says connected cars can collect sensitive information, including location, and that app-enabled functions can include remote unlocking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Location can also have several sources. Hyundai Motor America’s Vehicle Technologies & Service Privacy Notice describes both precise vehicle location and mobile-device location as covered information. FCA US LLC’s Connected Services Privacy Policy similarly identifies vehicle GPS and mobile-device location when consent applies. Turning off the phone’s location permission therefore may stop one source without disabling the vehicle’s own GPS or cellular reporting.

Think of privacy as a set of separate decisions rather than a single “do not track” switch:

  • Collection: whether the app, vehicle or service obtains a data category.
  • Use: whether the automaker uses collected data for functions such as diagnostics, personalization or driving insights.
  • Sharing: whether information is disclosed to service providers, business partners or other recipients.
  • Retention and rights: how long data is kept and whether you can access, delete or opt out of specified processing.

A control may address only one of these layers. Read the exact wording before treating a change as a complete opt-out.

Prepare before changing a privacy setting

Record the features you actually use

Write down whether you rely on remote start or lock/unlock, vehicle-finder maps, maintenance alerts, trip history, navigation destinations, crash or emergency response, charging controls, digital keys, roadside assistance or insurance-related driving scores. These functions commonly depend on a phone permission, an account setting, an in-vehicle connection or a combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the exact configuration

Note the make, model, model year, country, head-unit software version if shown, and the name of the enrolled connected service. Privacy controls can differ between two vehicles sold under the same brand and between countries because notices, consent rules and service packages differ.

Save evidence of your current choices

Take screenshots of consent screens and account settings before changing them. Keep the date, the wording of the option and any confirmation number from a privacy request. This gives you a record if a feature behaves differently or you later need to restore a setting.

Step 1: Reduce the companion app’s phone permissions

Use the operating system’s app-permission page, not only a switch inside the car app. Exact labels vary by Android and iOS release, but the process is similar:

  1. Open the phone’s Settings, then open Privacy or Privacy & Security and choose Location Services (iPhone) or Permission Manager and Location (Android).
  2. Select the vehicle companion app. Choose the least-permissive option that supports the features you want. Depending on the phone, choices can include Never, Ask Next Time, While Using the App or Always. If the app needs background location for a vehicle-finder alert, “While Using” may prevent that alert; verify rather than assuming.
  3. Review the app’s precise-location toggle, if the phone offers one. Disabling precise location can allow approximate location while preventing a pinpoint position from the phone.
  4. Return to the app’s permissions and inspect Bluetooth, Nearby devices, Local network, Motion & Fitness, microphone, camera, contacts, notifications and mobile-data access where those categories appear. Allow only what a feature requires. Nearby-device or Bluetooth access may be needed for a digital key or proximity connection.
  5. Check background-activity and battery settings. Preventing background activity can reduce automatic synchronization, but it can also delay alerts and remote commands.
  6. Open the phone’s location-services list for system-level services, such as location history or significant-location features, and decide separately whether you want them enabled. Those are phone settings, not proof that the vehicle service has stopped collecting data.

After changing permissions, test one feature at a time. For example, check whether the app can still show the vehicle’s current position and whether a remote command completes. A failure identifies the dependency; it does not mean the setting was ignored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Turn off optional collection and sharing in the app or account

Sign in to the companion app and the automaker’s web account. Look under sections labelled Privacy, Data sharing, Location, Driving insights, Personalization, Connected services, Consent or Account settings. The same preference may appear in both places, and changing one may not change the other.

Evaluate each switch by data category

  • Precise location: may affect vehicle-finder maps, geofenced alerts, route features and trip records.
  • Driving behavior or trip analytics: may affect scorecards, coaching, usage-based insurance integrations or personalized offers.
  • Diagnostics and vehicle health: may affect maintenance predictions, fault notifications and dealer support.
  • App-usage and personalization: may affect recommendations, marketing and how the app remembers preferences.
  • Device or contact data: may be used for pairing, digital keys, roadside contacts or sharing a vehicle with another driver.

Read whether the option controls collection, a particular use, or onward sharing. “Do not share” may still allow the automaker to collect data for a safety or core-service exception. Conversely, turning off an analytics feature may not erase information already retained.

Review account members and connected integrations

Remove former drivers, household members, dealer accounts and third-party integrations that no longer need access. Revoke old phones and digital keys. If you use an insurance, fleet or navigation integration, inspect its separate consent screen; a change in the vehicle app may not withdraw consent granted directly to that partner.

Step 3: Inspect privacy and connectivity menus in the vehicle

Use the infotainment display while parked. Search for Settings, Privacy, Data, Connectivity, Connected services, Consent or System information. Some vehicles present a first-run consent wizard; others place controls in a dedicated privacy dashboard or owner profile.

  1. Open the vehicle’s privacy or connectivity menu and list every enabled category, such as location, vehicle data, diagnostics, voice data, driving behavior and personalized services.
  2. Open the details for each category. Note the stated purpose, whether the data is sent through the vehicle’s modem, and any safety or emergency exception.
  3. Disable only the categories you do not need, then accept the confirmation screen.
  4. Check the vehicle’s user profile and guest profile separately. A change made for one profile may not apply to another.
  5. Confirm the result in the companion app and in the vehicle. Look for a status message showing that a connected service is unavailable or that consent has changed.

Ford’s privacy policy specifically directs users to SYNC settings when they want to stop sharing vehicle information with a mobile app or stop using the app with SYNC. That illustrates why the in-vehicle menu matters: an app permission alone may not change the vehicle-to-service connection.

What you may lose when you restrict data

Privacy controls are useful only when you understand the operational trade-off. The exact result depends on the vehicle and service, so use the owner’s manual or manufacturer support page for your configuration.

Control or data category Features that may be affected What to verify before disabling
Phone location Vehicle-finder map, geofenced alerts, nearby-vehicle functions Whether the feature uses phone location, vehicle GPS, or both
Bluetooth or nearby-device access Digital key, automatic pairing, proximity unlock Whether a physical key remains available as a fallback
Vehicle location sharing Map position, route support, location history, some emergency workflows Whether emergency or safety processing is an exception
Diagnostics and vehicle data Health reports, maintenance alerts, remote troubleshooting How you will receive fault information without the service
Driving-behavior analytics Driving scores, coaching, usage-based programs Whether a separate insurer or partner has its own consent
Application services Remote start, lock/unlock, charging schedules and other app commands Whether the command works locally or requires the connected service

Do not assume that disabling a category is reversible immediately. Some services cache a consent state until the vehicle reconnects, and a command already queued may complete after you change the setting. Wait for the vehicle and app to show the new status, then test only the functions you intend to keep.

Step 4: Use the manufacturer’s privacy and data-rights channel

Find the current privacy notice and data-rights page for the brand and country shown on your account. Use the contact method in that notice rather than an old bookmark or a generic dealer email. Available requests may include:

  • A copy of personal information associated with your account or vehicle.
  • Deletion of eligible data.
  • Correction of inaccurate account details.
  • Withdrawal or change of consent.
  • Opt-out of specified sales, sharing or targeted-use activities.
  • Disabling precise geolocation collection where the vehicle supports that control.

Describe the vehicle identification and the connected-service enrollment clearly, but do not send more personal information than the request form requires. Ask which data categories will be deleted, which must be retained for safety, legal or transaction reasons, and whether deletion also covers backups or service providers. Keep the confirmation and the response deadline stated in the notice.

Legal rights vary by jurisdiction. A privacy notice may offer a voluntary control that is broader or narrower than a statutory right, and an automaker may apply different procedures in different countries. Do not treat another brand’s process as a universal rule.

What the GM and OnStar order means—and what it does not

In January 2026, the FTC finalized an order concerning General Motors and OnStar after allegations that connected-vehicle data was collected and shared without informed consent. The final order requires affirmative express consent before most connected-vehicle data collection, use or sharing, subject to stated exceptions. It also provides U.S. consumers with a way to request data copies and seek deletion, requires an ability to disable precise-geolocation collection where the vehicle supports it, and provides an opt-out for geolocation and driver-behavior data with limited exceptions. The order includes a five-year ban on certain disclosures to consumer-reporting agencies.

Those remedies apply to the companies and consumers covered by that order. They are not a universal menu for every automaker, country or vehicle. If you use a GM or OnStar service in the United States, follow the current privacy channel and the vehicle-specific instructions rather than relying on a general app-permission change.

GM’s Mobile Privacy Statement says that not using its application services can restrict specified location collection. Stopping use of application services can therefore reduce collection associated with those services, but it is not proof that the vehicle stops collecting or transmitting all information.

If you want to stop using the app entirely

  1. Cancel or disable optional connected-service enrollment through the account page, following the service’s stated cancellation process.
  2. Sign out of the app on every phone and remove saved vehicles, old drivers and digital keys.
  3. Revoke the app’s phone permissions and delete the app if you no longer need it.
  4. In the vehicle, disable application or connected-service access where the menu provides that choice.
  5. Ask the automaker what data remains, what is deleted, and which vehicle functions continue to transmit information independently.

Signing out is an access change, not automatically a deletion request. The vehicle’s modem, emergency system, warranty process or another enrolled service may still operate under its own terms.

Troubleshooting common outcomes

The app still shows a vehicle location

Check whether the displayed position is cached, whether the vehicle has its own GPS connection, and whether another account member or service remains enrolled. Recheck both the app account and the in-vehicle privacy menu. Ask the manufacturer whether the position is a last-known value and when it will expire.

Remote commands stopped working

Review the feature-dependency message in the app, restore only the permission or consent required for that command, and test again while the vehicle has cellular coverage. If you do not want to restore the setting, use a physical key or local vehicle control where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turning off analytics did not erase old trips

Collection controls usually affect future processing. Submit a separate deletion or access request and ask whether trip records are retained for safety, legal, warranty or billing purposes.

A setting is missing

The option may depend on country, model year, software version, service enrollment or vehicle capability. Check the current owner’s manual and privacy notice, then contact the automaker with the exact configuration. Do not infer that the absence of a switch means unrestricted collection or that another model’s switch applies to yours.

A practical privacy checklist

  • Record your vehicle, model year, country and connected-service enrollment.
  • List the app features you need and the data each appears to require.
  • Set phone location to the least-permissive option that still supports those features.
  • Review Bluetooth, nearby-device, local-network, motion, microphone, camera, contacts and notification permissions.
  • Inspect app and account controls for location, driving behavior, diagnostics, personalization and sharing.
  • Review privacy and connectivity settings in the vehicle for every driver profile.
  • Read the feature-impact warning before confirming a change.
  • Remove old drivers, phones, keys and third-party integrations.
  • Use the current brand-and-country privacy channel for access, deletion, consent changes or available opt-outs.
  • Test the connected features you intend to keep and save confirmation of your choices.

The Bottom Line

The most reliable way to limit a car app’s data is layered control: phone permissions, app and account consent, in-vehicle privacy settings, and a formal manufacturer data-rights request. Change one layer at a time and verify which connected features—and which independent vehicle data flows—remain.
