Short answer: TikTok’s ad and privacy controls can reduce personalization, limit some advertiser-related data use, show fewer ads about selected topics, and let you provide feedback on suspicious ads. They cannot guarantee that every scam ad will disappear or remove advertising from TikTok altogether.
Start with Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Ads > Manage ad topics, select See less for topics commonly associated with unwanted promotions, then review the other ad controls described below. Topic changes may take up to 48 hours to appear.
What TikTok’s controls can—and cannot—do
Scam-ad prevention on TikTok is a layered process. Each setting changes a different part of the advertising system:

These controls are designed to manage relevance, personalization and feedback. They are not a platform-wide scam filter. A fraudulent promotion can still appear after you change ad preferences, so treat the ad itself as untrusted until you independently verify the business.

1. Reduce unwanted topics with Manage ad topics
TikTok’s documented ad-topic route is:
- Open TikTok and tap Profile.
- Tap the Menu button.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Open Ads.
- Tap Manage ad topics.
- For a topic you want to see less often, choose See less.
Use the topics that best match the promotions you want to reduce. For example, if a recurring stream of dubious investment promotions is appearing, mark the relevant financial topic as See less. The setting changes topic-level ad relevance; it does not identify individual scams or certify any advertiser.
Allow time for the change
TikTok says an ad-topic change can take up to 48 hours to show on your account. During that period, you may continue to see ads related to the old preference. If the same type of promotion appears after two days, reopen the page to confirm that See less is still selected and check the other controls in the Ads section.
Why the labels may differ
The documented path comes from TikTok’s Help Center, but the article is presented in Spanish and the exact wording can differ in English or another language. TikTok can also change menu names, arrange options differently by country, or expose controls only in certain app versions. Look for the equivalent of Ads, Manage ad topics and See less rather than assuming every account has identical screens.
2. Review ad-personalization and targeted-ad settings
TikTok lists separate help resources for ad personalization and targeted ads. These settings govern how closely advertising is matched to information associated with your activity. Review them after changing topics:
- Open Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Ads.
- Read each personalization or targeted-ad option currently shown for your account.
- Turn off a personalization option when you do not want TikTok to use that category of activity for ad selection, or leave it enabled if more relevant advertising is your priority.
- Save or confirm the choice if TikTok displays a confirmation prompt, then revisit the page to verify the current state.
Turning personalization down can make ads less tailored to your interests, but it does not remove advertising. TikTok may still display ads selected using information or delivery rules that remain available to the platform. The precise switches and their behavior can change by region, account and app release, so use the explanation displayed beside each option as the controlling description.

Personalization versus ad volume
These are different outcomes. A personalization control changes which ads are selected or how closely they match your activity. It is not a setting for an ad-free feed. If your goal is to see fewer promotions about a particular subject, use Manage ad topics as well; if your goal is to reduce use of certain activity for targeting, review the personalization and targeted-ad controls directly.
3. Mute or disconnect advertisers when the option appears
TikTok’s ad controls include resources for muting advertisers and disconnecting advertisers. These are more specific than a topic preference because they address an advertiser relationship rather than a broad subject category.
Muting an advertiser
If your account shows a Mute advertiser action, use it for an advertiser whose promotions you do not want to encounter. A mute is an exposure preference; it should not be treated as a finding that the advertiser is fraudulent, and it does not establish that every ad using a similar name comes from the same business.
Disconnecting an advertiser
Where TikTok offers Disconnect advertisers or equivalent wording, review the advertisers listed and remove a connection you do not recognize or no longer want associated with your account. This addresses the account-to-advertiser relationship described by TikTok’s control. It is not a universal block on all advertisements from the same industry, and another advertiser can still promote a similar offer.
When you cannot find either control
Do not assume that a missing button means the setting was ignored. TikTok says the availability of some data and advertiser controls depends on region and settings. Update the app through your normal app store, reopen Settings and privacy > Ads, and read the current Help Center guidance for your account. Avoid following tap-by-tap instructions copied from another country or an older version when the labels on your screen differ.

4. Review and clear off-TikTok activity
Businesses can share activity that occurs outside TikTok for advertising-related use. TikTok provides controls to review or clear that off-TikTok activity and to disconnect advertisers where the feature is available.

- Look for an option referring to off-TikTok activity, activity from businesses, or a similarly worded privacy control.
- Review the businesses or activity categories shown before clearing anything.
- Use the available Clear, Disconnect or equivalent action, then confirm the request.
TikTok’s Help Center says clearing this activity may take up to 30 days. The control also has a regional and settings-availability caveat, so some accounts will not show the same page or actions. Clearing activity is not a promise that every historical signal disappears immediately, nor does it stop a business from sending new activity later if the relevant connection remains available.
What to expect after clearing
For the first 30 days, advertising may continue to reflect earlier activity while TikTok processes the request. Keep the confirmation screen or note the date you submitted it so you can distinguish a pending change from a control that was never available on your account. If the activity page returns with new entries later, review the listed businesses again rather than assuming the original request failed.
5. Use About this ad as an inspection aid, not a legitimacy certificate
TikTok provides an About this ad entry for advertisements. Open it when available to inspect the information TikTok presents about why the ad was delivered or which advertising details are associated with it.
The existence of this panel does not establish that an offer is genuine. The available documentation does not guarantee that it displays enough information to verify a company, domain, product, investment claim or payment request. Treat the panel as context for your decision, not as an endorsement by TikTok.

Questions to ask while inspecting an ad
- Does the advertiser name match the business the ad claims to represent?
- Is the destination address spelled correctly and consistent with the business you independently locate?
- Does the offer demand urgency, upfront payment, cryptocurrency, gift cards or account credentials?
- Can you verify the business through a separate official channel rather than the link in the ad?
If the answer to any of these questions raises concern, close the ad and verify the business independently. Do not enter payment or login details simply because the ad has an About this ad panel.
6. Submit feedback on a suspicious advertisement
TikTok’s English Help Center lists a Share feedback on ads resource. Use the current feedback or report action displayed on the suspicious ad or in your account’s Ads help area.
- Pause on the suspicious promotion and open the ad’s current options or feedback control.
- Read the categories TikTok actually presents in your region and choose the one that truthfully describes the problem.
- Provide the requested details, such as why the promotion appears deceptive, impersonates a business or requests unsafe payment.
- Submit the feedback and keep any confirmation shown by the app.
The available material does not verify that every account has a Scam reason, nor does it establish one universal sequence of buttons. Do not invent a category if it is not displayed. If the ad’s menu offers only a general feedback or report option, use that current option and describe the issue accurately.
What feedback can and cannot promise
Feedback gives TikTok information about an ad; it is not a guarantee that the promotion will be removed, that an advertiser will be suspended, or that similar ads will stop. Continue using the privacy controls and avoid interacting with the promotion while any review is pending.

A practical sequence when a scam-looking ad appears
Use this order so that you do not accidentally reward the promotion with more engagement:

- Do not click the offer. Do not enter credentials, card numbers, one-time codes or identity documents.
- Open About this ad if it is available and note the advertiser information shown.
- Use the ad’s current feedback or report option and select only a category TikTok actually displays.
- Mute the advertiser if your account offers that control and you do not want further exposure.
- Adjust the relevant ad topic with See less if the promotion belongs to a recurring subject.
- Review off-TikTok activity if the ad appears connected to browsing or purchasing activity outside TikTok.
- Verify independently before considering any purchase or account action. Type a known business address yourself or use a trusted contact method, rather than following the ad’s link.
Why scam ads may still appear after you change settings
The setting has not finished updating
Topic changes can take up to 48 hours, and off-TikTok activity clearing can take up to 30 days. Seeing an old pattern during those windows does not by itself show that the request failed.
The control changes selection, not the existence of ads
Ad-topic, personalization and targeted-ad settings influence relevance or data use. They do not turn TikTok into an ad-free service or create a guaranteed blocklist for scams.
A different advertiser is promoting a similar scheme
Muting one advertiser does not cover every account selling a similar product or making a similar claim. Treat each new promotion as a separate ad and use the current feedback option when it appears deceptive.

TikTok’s controls and labels can vary by language, country, account settings and app version. If an instruction does not match your screen, rely on the current labels in your Ads settings and TikTok’s Help Center rather than forcing an older sequence.
The ad is personalized from information that remains available
Disabling one personalization option does not necessarily remove every signal used for ad delivery. Review all relevant options, including off-TikTok activity, and allow the stated processing period for each change.
Privacy choices and scam safety are different jobs
Privacy settings reduce or reshape data use and ad relevance. Scam safety requires a separate decision about whether an offer is trustworthy. Keep these habits even after changing TikTok’s settings:
- Never send a password, one-time passcode, banking login or identity document through an ad link.
- Be skeptical of guaranteed returns, extreme discounts, employment offers that require an upfront fee and demands for gift cards or cryptocurrency.
- Check the business through a contact method you found independently, not one supplied by the promotion.
- If you already entered sensitive information, contact the relevant bank or service through its official channel, change reused passwords and monitor the affected account.
- Save the ad’s wording, advertiser name and destination address before it disappears if you need to explain the problem in a report.

The realistic outcome
The most effective approach is to combine topic controls, personalization choices, advertiser controls, off-TikTok activity management and ad feedback. Together they can reduce unwanted targeting and give you more control over suspicious promotions. They cannot guarantee a scam-free TikTok feed, so the final safeguard remains refusing to click or pay until the advertiser and offer have been verified outside the ad.
