YouTube does not document a single setting that removes all political videos. The most effective built-in approach is to give feedback on unwanted recommendations, block recommendations from recurring channels, and review the watch and search history that may be shaping your Home page. These controls influence recommendations, but they do not guarantee a politics-free feed or block political videos everywhere on YouTube.
What YouTube’s controls actually do
YouTube describes recommendation feedback and history controls, not a broad politics-specific switch. On eligible Home and Watch Next recommendation cards, you can tell YouTube that a video is unwanted or that a channel should not be recommended. You can also remove activity that may be influencing future suggestions. The official Manage your recommendations & search results guide does not promise that these actions will remove every political video.
Recommendations are assembled from multiple signals. YouTube identifies watch history as the primary signal for Home recommendations and also lists search history, subscriptions, likes, dislikes, recommendation feedback, satisfaction surveys and Google Account activity among the signals it may use. The explanation is documented in How YouTube recommendations work. That is why one disliked video may not be enough to change the mix: several parts of your account activity can point the system toward the same topic.
The practical goal is reduction, not a guaranteed classification rule. You are telling the recommendation system what you prefer to see less often, while other activity can continue to affect the account. A political video can still be available on YouTube even after you give feedback on a similar recommendation.

Mark unwanted videos as “Not interested”
Use the menu on Home or Watch Next
When a political video appears as a recommendation, use the feedback menu attached to that individual card:
- Open YouTube while signed in and go to Home or a Watch Next page.
- Find the recommendation you do not want.
- Open More beside the video. Depending on your device, this may appear as a three-dot menu.
- Select Not interested.
- If YouTube asks why, choose the reason that best describes the problem.
YouTube says this feedback may be used to tune future recommendations. The control applies to the item you are reporting and is a recommendation signal, not a universal block on the subject. A political video can still be found through search, a direct link, a subscription or another recommendation surface.
Use the follow-up reason accurately
If a follow-up prompt appears, select the closest explanation rather than choosing randomly. More precise feedback gives YouTube a clearer indication of what you do not want to see. You do not need to report every video you encounter; concentrate on the recommendations that are clearly political or that repeatedly bring the same unwanted theme into your feed.

Use the control on the recommendation card itself. A dislike, a comment or closing a video may contribute to YouTube’s broader signals, but those actions are not documented as a politics-specific feed command. Not interested is the menu choice that directly describes an unwanted recommendation.
Stop recommendations from a recurring channel
Choose “Don’t recommend channel”
If several unwanted videos come from the same channel, open the More menu on an eligible recommendation and choose Don’t recommend channel. This sends channel-level feedback instead of responding only to one video. It is useful when a channel repeatedly appears in Home or Watch Next with political material.
The setting affects recommendations. It is not documented as a block across every YouTube surface, and the exact option may not appear for every card, device or account state. You can still encounter the channel if you search for it, open a direct link or use another part of YouTube. Do not treat the option as a way to prevent all access to the channel.
When to use video feedback instead
Use Not interested when the problem is a single video, a topic that appears across many channels, or a channel you occasionally want to keep seeing. Use Don’t recommend channel when the source itself is the recurring problem. You can use both controls on different recommendations without needing to change your entire history.

Video feedback is narrow and usually the least disruptive way to correct one bad suggestion. Channel feedback is broader for recommendations from that source, but it still does not stop a deliberate search or a video sent to you by someone else.
Review and delete watch history carefully
A video you watched, even briefly, can become part of the activity that shapes recommendations. If you watched political content while researching an event, clicked a video accidentally or let a playlist run, review your history before deleting everything.
Remove specific videos
- Open your YouTube history controls from the account menu or the history-management page available on your device.
- Review recently watched items for political videos or related clips that may have influenced your feed.
- Remove the relevant entries individually using the delete control shown next to each item.
- Return to Home and continue using recommendation feedback on any unwanted cards.
Deleting selected watch-history entries means those entries will not be used as the basis for future video recommendations. This is a narrower change than clearing your entire history, so it is the safer first step if you want to preserve recommendations for other interests.
Selective deletion is particularly useful after a one-time viewing session. For example, if you watched election coverage for work but normally want cooking and technology recommendations, remove the related viewing entries instead of wiping the activity that supports those other categories.

Turn off watch history when you want no new viewing activity recorded
You can also turn watch history off. YouTube’s help guidance states:
“If you don’t want video recommendations on Home, you can delete and turn off your watch history.”
With watch history off and no significant prior watch history, Home recommendations can disappear. Search and navigation still work, but the Home page may have little or no personalized video content.
Turning history off is therefore a major trade-off, not a targeted politics control. It prevents future viewing activity from becoming a watch-history signal, but it can also remove useful recommendations for music, technology, news and entertainment. Read the effect shown in your account before confirming the change.
Understand what deleting history does not promise
Deleting history changes the activity YouTube can use for recommendations; it does not promise that political videos will be excluded from every surface. It also does not replace feedback on current recommendation cards. If you delete history but continue to search for or watch political videos, other signals can still influence what YouTube shows.
Turning history back on does not restore deleted entries. Treat deletion as a real account change rather than a temporary “reset” button. If you want to preserve personalization, remove only the entries connected with the unwanted burst of political viewing.
Review search history and wider account activity
Clean up searches that may be steering suggestions
YouTube lists search history as another recommendation signal. Review searches for candidates, elections, commentators or political events that you no longer want associated with your recommendations, and remove the entries using the search-history controls available in YouTube or your Google Account. Deleting searches is useful when you looked up a topic once but do not want related videos suggested repeatedly.
Search history and watch history are separate records. Removing a watched video does not automatically remove a related search, and removing a search does not erase a video you watched. Check both when a short-lived research project appears to have changed your Home page.
Consider Google Account activity
YouTube’s recommendation documentation says Google Account activity may influence recommendations and related suggestions. If your YouTube feed changed after activity elsewhere in the account, review the account-level activity controls and the information shown there. Make changes selectively: broad deletion can reduce personalization beyond political topics and may remove signals you still find useful.
On a shared device, check which Google account is active before changing history. Removing activity from one account will not necessarily change recommendations shown under another profile, and a television can remain signed in to a different household member’s account.
Can you undo recommendation feedback?
YouTube provides a way to review and clear “Not interested” feedback through the activity controls associated with your account. If you mark something by mistake, look for the option to manage or clear that recommendation feedback in YouTube or Google My Activity. Clearing feedback can remove that particular signal, but it does not restore deleted watch history and does not guarantee that the same video will be recommended again.

This makes recommendation feedback relatively reversible compared with deleting history. Before clearing anything, verify the account and the activity entry you intend to change; the labels and location can change as YouTube updates its interface.

In terms of reversibility, feedback can generally be managed later, selected history can be deleted item by item, and turning history off can be changed again. The effects are not identical: re-enabling history does not recreate entries you deleted, while clearing feedback does not erase viewing or search activity. Choose the smallest intervention that addresses the problem.
A practical sequence for reducing unwanted political recommendations
For most viewers, a targeted sequence is less disruptive than deleting all account activity:
- Start with the next unwanted card. On Home or Watch Next, open More and choose Not interested.
- Identify a repeating source. If the same channel keeps appearing, choose Don’t recommend channel when that option is offered.
- Check recent watch history. Remove political videos that you watched accidentally or only for a one-time purpose.
- Check search history. Delete related searches if they no longer represent what you want recommended.
- Review broader account activity. Look for other Google Account activity that may be contributing to related suggestions before making a broad deletion.
- Use the controls consistently. Apply feedback to clear examples instead of assuming one action will change every recommendation.
- Use the stronger history option only if its side effects are acceptable. Turning off watch history can remove Home recommendations when there is no significant prior history.
This sequence separates a recommendation problem from a history problem. You can first change the specific signals most likely to be responsible and preserve the rest of your personalization.
Do not expect a guaranteed number of hours or days for the feed to change. YouTube’s official explanations do not promise a specific adjustment period, so judge the result by the recommendations that continue to appear and keep using the relevant controls when necessary.

What changes by device and sign-in state
Computer and phone
On a computer or phone, the relevant controls normally appear in the three-dot or More menu beside a Home or Watch Next card. The menu may be placed differently in a mobile app than on the desktop site. Follow the labels shown on your own screen rather than relying on a fixed click path.
On a phone, make sure you are acting on a recommendation card, not a video in your watch history or a search result. The feedback options are tied to eligible recommendation surfaces, so the same three-dot menu may contain different commands elsewhere in the app.
TVs, streaming devices and consoles
YouTube documents different interactions for televisions, streaming devices and consoles. A remote may open the menu with a select, options or three-dot button, and some surfaces may expose fewer feedback choices. If Not interested or Don’t recommend channel is not available, use the recommendation controls on a signed-in computer or phone and then return to the TV app.
On a shared television, confirm the profile before giving feedback. Otherwise, the signal may be attached to another person’s account and change recommendations for the wrong viewer.
Sign in before changing recommendations
Some recommendation and history features are available only when you are signed in. A signed-out device may not show the same feedback choices or may not connect the change to the account you use elsewhere. Confirm the profile shown in YouTube before applying a setting, especially on a shared TV.
Why political videos may still appear
The control changed recommendations, not all of YouTube
Recommendation feedback is designed to influence Home and Watch Next suggestions. It does not promise that political material will vanish from search results, direct links, subscriptions or every other surface. Seeing a political video outside the recommendation cards does not necessarily mean the feedback failed.

You watched or searched related material again
New viewing and search activity can provide fresh signals. If you intentionally need to watch one political video, consider removing that item and the related search afterward if you do not want it to shape future recommendations. Do this selectively so you do not erase useful activity by mistake.
The same topic is coming from several channels
Don’t recommend channel addresses one source. If several channels cover the same political event, apply Not interested to representative recommendations and review the history entries that may be connecting them. There is no documented setting that classifies every video about politics and excludes it automatically.

The controls are missing
Check whether you are on Home or Watch Next, whether you are signed in and whether the item is an actual recommendation card. Labels and available actions can differ by device, account and interface version. If the option still does not appear, use YouTube’s history controls and the feedback menu on another supported device.

Deleting all watch history can solve one recommendation problem by removing the main source of personalization, but it can also make Home less useful. YouTube explicitly notes that Home recommendations can disappear when watch history is off and there is no significant prior history. If you still want recommendations for nonpolitical interests, begin with individual feedback and selective history deletion.
Likewise, do not assume that a dislike is the same as a recommendation command. YouTube lists dislikes among its signals, but its documented recommendation controls specifically provide Not interested and Don’t recommend channel for this purpose. Use the menu options that describe the recommendation problem you are trying to solve.
Avoid treating every news or public-affairs video as identical if your real goal is narrower. For example, you may want to reduce campaign commentary while keeping local-government explainers or neutral history videos. Selective feedback and selective deletion let you make that distinction better than an account-wide reset.

YouTube’s official guidance does not guarantee a particular adjustment period, a percentage reduction or complete exclusion of political content. It also does not publish a promise that one feedback action will immediately change the next set of videos. Treat the controls as ongoing account feedback and check the source of unwanted recommendations when they recur.
The most precise expectation is this: recommendation feedback can reduce unwanted suggestions, history management can remove signals you no longer want used, and turning off history can remove Home personalization altogether. None of those choices is documented as a politics-only switch.
