Instagram and Facebook both provide controls that can reduce political material in recommendations, but neither is a guaranteed “remove all politics” switch. Facebook’s control is in Content Preferences; Instagram’s control is also under Content preferences, although menu wording may differ by app version.
Set the preference, then judge each remaining post by where it came from. Recommendations from accounts you do not follow are treated differently from posts by accounts, pages, groups or other sources you already chose to see.
Which setting should you use?

These controls concern ranking and recommendations. They do not delete political posts, unfollow accounts, remove political groups or pages, or guarantee that no political material will appear.

Before changing anything
You do not need a paid service, a separate device or an accessory to use these controls. They are account preferences built into the Facebook and Instagram apps. You do need to be signed in to the account whose feed you want to change. If you manage multiple accounts, repeat the process for each one; changing a preference on one account does not automatically alter another account.

Install the current app version before troubleshooting. Meta changes navigation labels and rolls out settings at different times, so the words may be capitalized differently or appear in a slightly different location. The safest approach is to use the app’s own Settings search for Political Content or Content Preferences, rather than relying on a screenshot from an older tutorial.
Why older advice may no longer match your feed
On January 7, 2025, Meta announced a more personalized approach to civic content—posts about elections, politics and social issues—across Facebook, Instagram and Threads. The company said it was bringing more of this material back into recommendations according to individualized signals while expanding controls for people who want less of it.
“We are also going to recommend more political content based on these personalized signals and are expanding the options people have to control how much of this content they see.”

That policy change matters when evaluating older tutorials. An article that says political recommendations are uniformly restricted may describe an earlier default, not the behavior of your current account. Recommendation eligibility is also separate from whether content is allowed on the service: Meta’s Recommendation Guidelines explain that material can remain permitted while being excluded from recommendation surfaces. A post can therefore stay online and still appear through a source that is outside the recommendation control.
“Political content” can include more than campaign announcements. Meta’s description of civic content covers elections, politics and social issues. A post may be classified or ranked differently depending on its wording, account, format and surface. Do not expect the setting to recognize every post exactly as a person would, or to hide every discussion that feels political.
How to see fewer political posts on Facebook
Use the Political Content preference
- Open Facebook and open the main menu or your profile menu.
- Choose Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Open Content Preferences.
- Select Political Content.
- Turn off the default option that allows the broader political-content setting. The confirmation or description should indicate that you will see less political content.
Meta’s May 2025 description says this setting can be changed again at any time. If your screen uses slightly different capitalization, follow the same sequence and look for the Political Content entry inside Content Preferences.
If the entry is hard to find
- Use the search field in Facebook Settings and search for Political Content or Content Preferences.
- Update Facebook before concluding that the control is unavailable; menu placement can change with app releases.
- Check that you are changing the preference on the account whose feed you want to alter. A setting changed on one account does not automatically change another account’s feed.
What Facebook’s control can change
Facebook’s wording is broader than Instagram’s earlier documentation. Meta says moving away from the default may affect political content from accounts you follow and recommendations from accounts you do not follow. The statement does not promise that every political post will be reduced by the same amount, so treat the setting as a ranking preference rather than a hard filter.

That distinction is important if you follow a candidate, news outlet, activist organization or political commentator. Their posts may still be delivered directly because you elected to follow the account. The Facebook setting can change how much such content is shown, according to Meta’s description, but it does not cancel the follow relationship or erase the account’s posts.
How to limit political recommendations on Instagram
Find the control in the current app
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the menu button, then choose Settings and privacy.
- Open Content preferences.
- Look for Political content.
- Choose the option that limits or reduces political content. Do not select an option labeled Don’t limit if your goal is to see less.
The Associated Press documented this route on March 23, 2024. Instagram’s labels may have moved since then, and Meta’s official 2024 announcement did not provide a permanently current step-by-step path. If the names differ, remain inside Content preferences and look for a political-content or recommendation control rather than assuming it has been removed.
Which Instagram surfaces are covered?
Meta described the control as applying to recommendation surfaces, including Explore, Reels, in-feed recommendations and suggested users. In that announcement, Meta said the change would not alter how content from accounts a person chose to follow was shown. That distinction is why a political post from a followed account can continue to appear even after recommendations have been limited.
Because Meta adopted a more personalized civic-content policy in 2025, the safest interpretation is the text displayed beside the switch in your current app. The control is still intended to tune recommendations; it is not an instruction to remove political accounts from your Following list.

Do not assume that setting the two switches produces the same result. Meta’s own descriptions give the platforms different scopes, and the Instagram explanation predates the 2025 policy change.
What to do when political posts continue appearing
First identify the source
Look at the label around the post or recommendation. Determine whether it came from an account you follow, an account you do not follow, a page, a group, a suggested-user module, Explore, Reels or an advertisement. The source tells you whether the preference is likely to apply.
- Followed account: Instagram’s documented control was not designed to hide these posts. Facebook’s newer description says followed-account content can be affected, but it does not promise removal.
- Recommendation: The setting is intended to reduce ranking of this type of material, not make every recommendation disappear instantly.
- Group or page: Membership or following can create a direct content path outside a recommendation-only control.
- Advertisement: An ad is a separate category from an organic political post and may use a different ad-preference control.
Use the post-level feedback option
When an unwanted item remains, open the post’s menu and use the available feedback choice that says you are not interested or want to see less of this type of content. The exact wording varies by surface and app version. This feedback is a second signal; it does not replace the platform-level preference.

Allow time for ranking changes
Changing a preference does not rewrite posts already loaded in a feed or remove content that another source is delivering directly. Continue using the feed-level feedback control when the same pattern recurs. Avoid expecting a single refresh to demonstrate the full effect.

A political-content recommendation setting should not be treated as an advertising opt-out. Meta’s historical Facebook feed-tools article, originally published in February 2021 and updated through April 2023, listed separate tools for feed curation and political ads. That older article is useful for distinguishing the categories, but it should not be used as proof of the current menu path.
If the item is marked as an advertisement, open its advertising or ad-preferences controls and read the current options there. If it is an ordinary post or recommendation, use the Political Content preference and the post-level feedback menu instead. Keeping the categories separate prevents a recommendation setting from being blamed for an ad that it was never designed to govern.
Recommendation limits are not content removal
Meta’s Recommendation Guidelines draw a line between content that is allowed to remain on the service and content that is eligible to be recommended. A political post can be permitted under the platform’s rules yet not be selected for Explore, Reels or another recommendation surface. Conversely, content can reach you through a followed account, group, page or direct subscription without being a recommendation at all.
This is why a successful setting change may reduce unfamiliar political accounts in Explore while leaving political discussions in a group you joined. The result is not contradictory: different delivery paths are governed by different controls. Identify the path before deciding that the preference failed.

“I cannot see Political Content”
- Update the app from your device’s normal app store.
- Open the in-app Settings search and search the exact phrase Political Content.
- Search within Content Preferences rather than the general feed menu.
- Sign out and back in only after confirming that the app is current; this can refresh a stale settings screen but does not change the account’s preference by itself.
- If the entry is still absent, recognize that labels and rollouts can vary by account, region and app version. Do not infer that political content is permanently unrestricted from a missing menu item.
“I chose the setting, but I still see political posts”
Recheck whether the posts come from accounts you follow, groups or pages, or an advertisement. Instagram’s documented control focused on recommendations, and Facebook’s description says “see less,” not “none.” The platform may also leave allowed content available outside recommendation surfaces.
“The option seems backwards”
Read the explanatory text rather than relying on the switch color. On Instagram, the 2024 walkthrough specifically described an option labeled Don’t limit; that is the choice for someone who wants political recommendations, not for someone trying to reduce them. Select the alternative that says political content will be limited or reduced.

“Will changing it unfollow anyone?”
No. The documented controls change ranking or recommendation preferences. They do not remove an account from your Following list. If you want to stop direct posts from a particular account, use that account’s own follow, mute or similar control, if offered in your current app.
“Does this hide posts from people I follow?”
There is no single answer for both platforms. Instagram’s February 2024 explanation said its recommendation change did not alter posts from accounts you chose to follow. Meta’s May 2025 Facebook update says moving away from the default may also affect political content from followed accounts. Therefore, read the description next to the control on each platform and do not transfer Instagram’s earlier promise to Facebook.
“Can I turn the setting back on?”
Yes. Meta’s Facebook description says the preference can be adjusted at any time. Return to Content Preferences and select the default or less-restricted option shown in your account. Instagram’s labels may differ, so use the current explanatory text rather than assuming the same switch wording.

- Set Facebook’s Political Content preference to the less-content option.
- Set Instagram’s Political content preference to the limiting option, checking the wording carefully.
- For the next several sessions, note whether an item is followed content, a recommendation, a group or page post, or an ad.
- Apply the available post-level “not interested” or “see less” feedback to unwanted recommendations.
- Review your Following list and group or page memberships if direct political posts are the main problem.
- Revisit the settings after an app update, because Meta has changed both policy direction and menu presentation.
This approach addresses the surfaces the controls are meant to influence while preserving a realistic expectation: reducing political recommendations is different from eliminating every political message that reaches your account.
What Meta’s policy timeline means for your expectations
- February 2021: Meta described Facebook feed tools, including Favorites and Snooze, and treated political-ad controls separately from ordinary feed ranking.
- February 2024: Meta announced Instagram and Threads changes aimed at political content in recommendations. The announcement named Explore, Reels, in-feed recommendations and suggested users, and distinguished those surfaces from posts by accounts people already followed.
- January 7, 2025: Meta announced a more personalized approach that would recommend more civic content according to individualized signals while expanding user controls.
- May 28–29, 2025: Meta’s Facebook update confirmed the Political Content control in Content Preferences and explained that turning off the default option lets people see less political content, potentially including material from followed accounts.
The timeline explains why instructions from different years can appear to contradict one another. They may describe different defaults, different platforms or different recommendation surfaces.

Does Instagram’s control hide political posts from accounts I follow?

Will changing these preferences unfollow accounts or leave groups?
No. The documented controls adjust ranking or recommendations. They do not remove accounts from your Following list or automatically remove you from groups. Use separate follow, mute or membership controls if direct posts are the problem.
