Google does not currently offer a general “health” or “medicine” switch in My Ad Center. You can limit the sensitive topics Google lists—Alcohol, Dating, Gambling, Pregnancy and parenting, and Weight loss—or turn personalized ads off more broadly. Those controls reduce personalization; they do not guarantee that every ad mentioning a health condition, treatment, or medicine will disappear. Search context, browsing activity, whether you are signed in, and the subject of the ad can all affect what you still see.
This guide reflects Google’s published controls checked on October 13, 2026, and shows exactly where to change them and how to interpret the result.
What Google’s ad controls can—and cannot—do
My Ad Center separates two choices that are easy to confuse:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Sensitive-topic limits: You select topics from Google’s current list and ask to see fewer personalized ads associated with them.
- Personalized ads off: You make the broader choice not to have Google use personalization signals for ads in the supported settings.
Neither option is a medical-ad blocker. Google’s current sensitive-topic list does not include a general Health, medical conditions, or medicines category. A person who wants fewer ads personalized around health-related interests therefore needs to decide whether one of the listed topics is relevant or whether the broader personalized-ads setting better matches their goal.

| Control | What you select | Expected effect | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sensitive-topic limit | One or more of Alcohol, Dating, Gambling, Pregnancy and parenting, or Weight loss | Fewer personalized ads associated with the selected topic | Health and medicine are not separate choices; ads are not completely blocked |
| Personalized ads off | A broad account-level preference in My Ad Center | Less ad personalization overall | Ads can still be shown, and contextual signals such as a search can influence them |
The sensitive-topic controls are documented for ads on Google Search, YouTube, and Discover when you are signed in. My Ad Center is available on Google services where ads appear, including Search, YouTube, and Maps; the sensitive-topic documentation specifically names Search, YouTube, and Discover.
Limit the sensitive topics Google actually lists
Use this route when you want to reduce personalization around a listed topic rather than change ad personalization everywhere.
- Sign in to the Google Account you want to manage. If you use multiple accounts, check the profile picture or account indicator before changing anything.
- Open My Ad Center. You can reach it from a Google service that displays ads, such as Google Search, YouTube, or Maps.
- Choose Customize Ads.
- Open the Sensitive tab. This is where Google places the topic limits.
- Turn on the limit for each listed topic you want to restrict. The available topics are Alcohol, Dating, Gambling, Pregnancy and parenting, and Weight loss.
- Leave the page after the setting saves. Google says the preference saves automatically; there is no separate save button to submit.
These controls are topic-specific. Selecting Weight loss, for example, does not create a general ban on advertisements for medicines, clinics, diagnoses, or other health subjects. It asks Google to show fewer personalized ads associated with that selected topic.
When a listed topic overlaps with a health concern
Some health-related advertising can overlap conceptually with a listed topic, such as pregnancy and parenting or weight loss. The setting still applies only to the topic as Google defines and uses it for ad selection. It should not be treated as a promise that every ad connected to a related medical issue will be removed.
Turn personalized ads off for broader control
If your objective is to reduce personalization about health, medicines, and other subjects—not merely one of the five listed topics—the broader setting is the more relevant choice.

- Switch personalized ads off and review the confirmation shown by Google.
- For ads outside Google services, review Google’s Ads Settings help for the Display Network opt-out. Google documents opting out of personalized ads across the Google Display Network separately from the controls you see in My Ad Center.
Turning personalization off changes how ads are selected; it does not remove advertising from Search, YouTube, Discover, Maps, or other services. You may still receive ads based on the page, video, query, approximate context, or other non-personalized factors.
Why health or medicine ads can continue after you change a setting
Continued appearances do not necessarily mean the control failed. Google describes several reasons the result can differ from what people expect.

There is no general health or medicine category to switch off
My Ad Center’s published sensitive list contains five topics and does not include a broad health, medical-condition, or medicine category. If you looked for a “Health” toggle and cannot find one, that is the current design rather than a hidden setting you have missed.
A search can produce a contextual ad
Google states that search activity can affect the ads you see even when you have limited a sensitive topic. Its help text puts the point directly: “Your ads are affected by your search activity, even if you’ve chosen to limit ads about a sensitive topic.” A query about a symptom, treatment, prescription, clinic, or medication can therefore be followed by an ad chosen because of the immediate context of the search, rather than because Google added a lasting health interest to your advertising profile.
The setting works only while you are signed in
The sensitive-topic documentation describes the controls as applying while signed in. If you browse in a different Google Account, in a private session, or while signed out, the preference from your managed account may not govern the ad selection. Check the active account before judging whether the change worked.

A topic limit reduces selection; it does not block every mention
Google warns that a limited topic can still appear in an ad about something else. An advertisement may mention a health product as one element of a broader offer, be selected for the page or video you are viewing, or belong to a category that is not represented by the sensitive-topic list. The limit is therefore a reduction in personalization, not a keyword filter or guaranteed exclusion list.
Regular topic preferences are different from sensitive-topic limits
My Ad Center also lets you ask to see fewer ads about ordinary topics or brands. That preference changes ad selection but does not block the topic or brand. Search and browsing activity can still influence what is shown. Do not assume that using a regular “see fewer” control creates the same protection as a sensitive-topic limit or as turning personalized ads off.
Google’s advertiser policy is a separate layer
Google’s advertising policy treats personal physical or mental health conditions—including chronic conditions—and products or services used to treat or manage chronic conditions as sensitive interest categories. For these categories, Google restricts advertisers from using advertiser-curated audiences such as Customer Match and their own data segments. The policy still permits specified predefined Google audiences.
Those are rules about what advertisers may use for targeting. They do not add a health-specific end-user switch to My Ad Center. A policy restriction can limit some forms of audience targeting while an ad remains eligible to appear because of context, a predefined audience, the content of a page or video, or another permitted signal.
Choose the setting that matches your goal
You want fewer ads tied to one listed sensitive topic
Use My Ad Center → Customize Ads → Sensitive, then enable the limit for the relevant topic. This is the narrowest change and leaves other personalization choices in place.

You want less personalization around health and everything else
Turn personalized ads off. This is broader than selecting a sensitive topic, although it still does not stop contextual advertising or remove ads altogether.
You want no ads about a particular medical subject at all
Google’s documented controls do not provide that guarantee. A topic limit is not a complete block, and there is no general health or medicine switch in the sensitive-topic list. You may still see contextual ads after searches or while viewing related content.
You manage advertising for a family member or another user
Change settings only while signed in to the account whose ads are being managed. A preference saved in your account does not automatically transfer to another account, device profile, or signed-out session.
Check that the change was made correctly
Use this verification routine immediately after changing a preference:

- Return to My Ad Center and check that the sensitive-topic limit remains enabled or that personalized ads remains off.
- Test across the service where you noticed the ads, such as Search, YouTube, or Discover, while still signed in.
- Give the result the correct interpretation: a different ad is evidence of changed selection, not proof that all health-related advertising has been blocked.
- If the same subject appears after a related search, remember that Google explicitly says search activity can affect ads even when a sensitive topic is limited.
Troubleshoot common situations
“I cannot find a Health or Medicine option.”
That is expected under Google’s current published list. Open the Sensitive tab to see the five available topics. For a broader reduction in personalization, use the personalized-ads control instead.

“I enabled a topic limit, but I still saw a related ad.”
Check whether the ad appeared after a related search or on related content, and confirm that you were signed in to the account whose setting you changed. The control does not block every ad about the topic and does not override contextual selection.
“I turned personalized ads off, but advertising did not disappear.”
That setting changes personalization, not the presence of ads. Google can still show contextual or otherwise non-personalized advertising. Review the Display Network opt-out information in Google’s Ads Settings help if your concern includes ads outside the Google services covered by My Ad Center.
“The setting works on one device but not another.”
Check the signed-in account and the browsing state on both devices. The documented sensitive-topic effect is tied to being signed in; a different account or signed-out session can produce a different result.
“I used ‘see fewer’ for a topic and expected it to be blocked.”
Regular topic preferences are not blocks. They influence ad selection, while searches and browsing activity can continue to affect the ads you receive.
What to expect after changing the controls
The practical outcome is a change in how Google personalizes ad selection, not a guaranteed clean break from health-related advertising. A sensitive-topic limit is targeted and available only for the five published topics. Turning personalized ads off is the broader account preference. In both cases, the account must be the one currently signed in, and contextual signals—especially a recent search—can still produce an ad related to a health condition, treatment, or medicine.
Google’s advertiser policy adds protections on the targeting side by limiting certain advertiser-provided health audiences, but that policy does not create a user-facing health toggle. If you need to reduce personalization as far as Google’s current account controls allow, turn personalized ads off and keep expectations focused on reduced personalization rather than total ad removal.
