To stop YouTube from using your Google activity to tailor ads, open My Ad Center, switch Personalized ads off, and confirm. That account-level choice applies to Google services, including YouTube, on devices where you are signed in. It does not remove advertising: YouTube can still show contextual ads based on factors such as the video topic, time of day, or location.

What turning off personalized ads actually changes

Personalized advertising uses information associated with your account and activity to select or rank ads. When you turn off the main Personalized ads setting in My Ad Center, Google says saved account information and activity are no longer used to personalize ads on Google services, including YouTube, across your signed-in devices. The setting affects ad selection, not whether an ad slot exists.

You may therefore continue to see ads. Non-personalized ads can be selected from contextual signals, including the subject of the video, the time of day and your approximate location. Ads delivered by advertising platforms outside Google are not controlled by this Google setting. YouTube identifies paid memberships as an option for an ad-free viewing experience, but that is a separate product choice rather than a personalization control; availability and current offers depend on your market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How personalized and contextual ads differ

A personalized ad can reflect information connected with your Google account, such as activity that Google allows for advertising. A contextual ad is selected from the immediate setting instead. For example, a sports video may attract a sports-related ad, and an ad may vary with the time or approximate location even when account-based personalization is disabled. Seeing a relevant ad after changing the setting is therefore not proof that the preference failed.

The control also applies specifically to Google-service advertising. A video can contain a sponsorship chosen by the creator, or an ad can be delivered by another platform embedded in a page or app. Those placements are outside My Ad Center. Limiting Google’s personalization reduces one category of targeting; it is not a universal ad-blocker.

Choose the control that matches your situation

Control Scope What it changes What it does not do
My Ad Center: Personalized ads off Signed-in Google services, including YouTube, across signed-in devices Stops saved account information and activity from being used to personalize Google-service ads Does not remove contextual or non-personalized ads, or ads served by other platforms
YouTube History for ads off Google Search and YouTube ads Stops YouTube History from informing ad personalization Does not necessarily delete saved history or stop its use for personalized recommendations
Activity on sites and apps for ads off Google advertising personalization Excludes that activity source from ad personalization Does not itself erase activity records or disable all Google storage
Signed-out YouTube ad setting The current browser or device while signed out Changes Google’s personalization for YouTube in that signed-out environment Does not automatically apply to another browser, device or non-Google ad platform
Apple app-tracking choice The YouTube app on one iPhone, iPad or Apple TV Controls linking YouTube app activity with activity from non-Google apps and websites for ads and measurement Does not replace Google-account settings or govern activity from other Google apps
Topic or brand customization Ads shown through Google services Shifts which topics or brands appear more or less often Does not block a topic or reduce the total number of ads
YouTube paid membership Your YouTube viewing account, where offered YouTube lists memberships as an ad-free viewing option Is not a privacy or personalization setting

Most signed-in viewers should start with the first row. Use the narrower activity controls when you want to keep personalized ads generally but exclude a particular data source. If your priority is seeing no YouTube ads, investigate the paid membership offered in your region rather than expecting a privacy switch to remove ad slots.

Turn off personalized ads for a signed-in Google account

  1. Open My Ad Center from Google’s ad settings while signed in to the Google account used with YouTube.
  2. Find Personalized ads and switch it off.
  3. Read the confirmation prompt and confirm the change.

This is the broad, account-level control. It follows the account to Google services on devices where that account is signed in, so changing it on a computer also covers your signed-in YouTube sessions on supported phones, tablets and televisions. If a device has several Google accounts, check which account is active before changing the setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If ads still look related to a recent search or video, that does not necessarily mean the switch failed. Contextual targeting can produce a relevant-looking ad without using your saved account activity for personalization. Allow a short period for the preference to be reflected across active sessions, then verify the switch in My Ad Center rather than judging from one ad impression.

Limit the data used for ads without disabling all personalization

My Ad Center offers narrower controls under Manage Privacy. These are useful if you want to keep some personalized advertising while excluding a specific activity source. They also let you make a more targeted change when a household shares an account and you do not want to change every advertising preference.

Stop YouTube History from informing ads

  1. Open My Ad Center and choose Manage Privacy.
  2. Locate YouTube History in the activity used to personalize ads.
  3. Turn the YouTube History ad-use control off and confirm.

This tells Google not to use YouTube History to personalize ads on Google Search and YouTube. It is not the same as deleting your history. Google states that turning off this ad-use setting does not necessarily stop YouTube History from being saved to your Google Account or from contributing to recommendations. Manage or delete the underlying history separately if that is your goal. A viewer can therefore have fewer history-based ad signals while still receiving recommendations based on saved viewing activity.

Stop activity on sites and apps from informing ads

  1. In My Ad Center, open Manage Privacy.
  2. Find Activity on sites and apps in the list of information used for ads.
  3. Switch that ad-personalization control off and confirm.

This is another data-source control. It does not itself delete activity records, sign you out of websites or disable every form of Google activity storage. Review the explanatory text shown in My Ad Center before confirming, because storage, recommendations and advertising controls are separate choices. If you later want a broader change, use the main Personalized ads switch rather than changing each source one at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn off personalization while signed out

A viewer who is not signed in can still change YouTube ad personalization, but the preference is stored for the browser or device being used. It does not automatically follow you to another phone, computer, browser profile or television. Clearing browser data, using private browsing, or switching profiles can also leave you with a different local setting.

Use Google’s ad settings

  1. Open Google’s ad settings while signed out.
  2. Select YouTube when asked which service to manage.
  3. Turn personalized ads off and confirm.

The signed-out setting is distinct from the account-level My Ad Center switch. If you later sign in, the signed-in account’s preference controls that session instead. Repeat the signed-out change on each browser or device where you watch without an account.

Use the YouTube app on Android

  1. Open the YouTube app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or the app menu, then open Settings.
  3. Choose History & privacy.
  4. Switch off Allow personalized ads.

YouTube’s Android guidance directs signed-in users to My Ad Center for the account-level choice. The in-app switch is intended for the signed-out app context. If the label is missing or the app instead asks you to manage the account, check whether you are signed in and use My Ad Center. An Android setting changed on one phone should not be assumed to cover a tablet or a browser where you are signed out.

Handle Apple’s tracking permission separately

On an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, the YouTube app may display Apple’s tracking permission prompt. Choosing Ask App Not to Track prevents YouTube app activity from being linked with activity from non-Google apps and websites for personalized ads and measurement. This is narrower than turning off Google personalized ads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It applies to the YouTube app on that Apple device.
  • It does not decide the personalized-ads setting for your Google Account.
  • It does not control activity from other Google apps and websites.

You can change the permission later in the device’s privacy or tracking settings for the YouTube app. The exact behavior and wording are documented in YouTube’s Apple-device ad-settings help and Google’s iOS explanation of personalized ads. If you use YouTube while signed in, review both Apple’s app-tracking choice and My Ad Center; one does not substitute for the other. Choosing not to allow tracking also does not remove contextual ads or creator sponsorships.

Reduce certain topics or block an individual ad

Adjust topics and brands

My Ad Center lets you tell Google that you want fewer ads associated with selected topics or brands. This changes the mix of ads shown through Google services; it does not promise that the topic will disappear. You might still receive an ad about a limited topic after searching for it or watching related content. Topic controls also do not reduce the overall quantity of advertising, and they are not a substitute for turning off personalization.

Use the controls on an ad

Where the ad menu offers the option, you can ask to see less of a particular ad or report it. These actions address an individual ad or category and are not a replacement for the account-wide Personalized ads switch. Availability of menu choices can vary by ad and device. Reporting an ad is appropriate for a policy concern; simply disliking a topic is better handled through topic or brand preferences.

For Google’s explanation of these controls, see Get started with My Ad Center and YouTube’s Ads on YouTube guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to expect after changing the setting

  • Ads can remain: turning personalization off does not remove ad slots. Contextual signals such as the video’s subject, time of day and location can still influence a non-personalized ad.
  • One relevant ad is not proof of personalization: an ad can match what you are watching because of the content itself.
  • Recommendations are a separate system: disabling YouTube History for ads does not necessarily stop YouTube from using saved history for recommendations.
  • Coverage depends on sign-in state: account settings cover signed-in devices; signed-out choices are local to the browser or device where they were made.
  • Other ad platforms are outside this control: a Google preference cannot govern ads served by a different advertising platform.
  • Creator integrations may remain: a sponsorship or product mention included in a video’s content is not the same as a Google ad impression and is not removed by these settings.

Troubleshoot when ads still seem personalized

The main switch is on again

Check that you are viewing My Ad Center under the intended Google account. A shared computer, separate browser profile or television may be signed into a different account. If you are signed out, check the local browser or device setting instead; it has no account-wide status. Also check whether a family member changed a shared account’s preference.

You changed YouTube History but still see related ads

Confirm that you changed the control under Manage Privacy for ad use, not merely a history-retention or deletion option. Related ads may be contextual, and existing history can still support recommendations even when its use for ads is off. If the main personalized-ads switch is still on, other permitted signals may continue to personalize ads.

The Android option is unavailable

Open Settings → History & privacy in the YouTube app and check whether you are signed in. Signed-in users are directed to My Ad Center for the account setting; the Allow personalized ads switch is the signed-out app route. Update or reopen the app if the menu is not displayed, then verify the account state before looking for the local control.

Ads remain on an Apple device

Review both layers: Apple’s YouTube tracking permission and the Google Account’s My Ad Center setting. Selecting Ask App Not to Track limits cross-app linking with non-Google apps and websites, but it does not turn off Google-account personalization by itself. Also remember that non-personalized contextual ads can still appear.

A topic I limited still appears

Topic controls reduce the likelihood or mix of related ads; they do not block every ad about that subject. Search activity or the video you are watching can provide contextual relevance. Use the ad menu’s block or report option when it is offered for a specific ad.

You changed a setting but cannot tell whether it worked

Do not use a single ad as a test. Confirm the setting in My Ad Center, identify the active account or signed-out profile, and check the same state on each device you care about. A contextual ad can remain relevant, while a different platform or a creator-read sponsorship may not be affected at all.

Decide which combination to use

  • Want the broadest reduction in account-based targeting: turn off Personalized ads in My Ad Center.
  • Want personalized ads generally, but not from YouTube viewing history: leave the main switch on and turn off YouTube History under Manage Privacy.
  • Want to exclude browsing and app activity used for ads: turn off Activity on sites and apps under Manage Privacy.
  • Mostly watch while signed out: change the signed-out setting on each browser or device you use.
  • Use an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV: make the Apple tracking choice as well as reviewing Google’s account setting.
  • Dislike a category rather than personalization itself: adjust topics or brands, understanding that this changes the mix rather than removing ads.
  • Want no YouTube ads at all: investigate a YouTube paid membership available in your region; that is an ad-free viewing option, not a data-control setting.

Privacy checklist before you finish

  1. Identify whether you are signed in, and which Google account is active.
  2. Use My Ad Center for the broad account-level decision.
  3. Open Manage Privacy if you only want to exclude YouTube History or activity on sites and apps.
  4. Repeat the signed-out setting on every local browser or device where necessary.
  5. On Apple devices, review the YouTube app’s tracking permission separately.
  6. Remember that recommendations, saved history, contextual ads and creator sponsorships can operate independently of ad personalization.

Official help for the settings

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off personalized ads remove YouTube ads?

No. It stops Google from using saved account information and permitted activity to personalize ads, but contextual ads can still use the video’s topic, time of day or approximate location. Creator sponsorships and ads from other platforms are separate as well.

Does the My Ad Center setting apply to every device?

It applies to Google services, including YouTube, on devices where you are signed in to the same Google account. A signed-out browser or a different account has its own setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between turning off YouTube History for ads and deleting YouTube History?

The My Ad Center control stops YouTube History from informing ads on Google Search and YouTube. It does not necessarily delete the history saved in your Google Account or stop that history from helping recommendations. Deletion and retention are separate controls.

Can I limit personalized ads without turning them off everywhere?

Yes. In My Ad Center, open Manage Privacy and turn off individual sources such as YouTube History or Activity on sites and apps while leaving the main Personalized ads switch on.

How do I turn off personalized ads when I am not signed in?

Use Google’s ad settings, select YouTube, and turn personalized ads off. The choice is stored for that browser or device, so repeat it on other signed-out devices. In the signed-out Android YouTube app, use Settings, History & privacy, and switch off Allow personalized ads.

Is Apple’s Ask App Not to Track option the same as turning off Google personalized ads?

No. Apple’s choice limits linking YouTube app activity with non-Google apps and websites for ads and measurement on that Apple device. It does not change your Google Account’s My Ad Center setting or activity from other Google apps and websites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do I still see an ad about a topic I limited?

Topic and brand preferences change the mix of ads; they do not block every ad about a topic or reduce the total number of ads. A search or the video you are watching can also make an ad contextually relevant.

What should I do if the setting appears not to work?

Confirm the active Google account, check My Ad Center directly, and distinguish signed-in from signed-out sessions. Review Apple tracking permissions on Apple devices. Then remember that a relevant contextual ad, a creator sponsorship or an ad from another platform may remain unaffected.

The Bottom Line

For a signed-in YouTube account, switch off Personalized ads in My Ad Center. Use Manage Privacy for narrower controls over YouTube History or activity on sites and apps, and use the separate signed-out or Apple settings when those situations apply. These choices reduce account-based targeting, not the existence of every ad; contextual advertising, other platforms and creator sponsorships can still appear.
