To limit ad personalization, change the controls for the advertising system that is using your data: Android’s Ads privacy settings and advertising ID, Apple’s Personalized Ads and location settings, and Google’s account-level My Ad Center or YouTube controls. These switches reduce the data or identifiers used for targeting; they do not remove advertising from your phone or every app.
What “limit personalized ads” actually changes
Personalized advertising uses signals about an account, device, app activity, location or the content being viewed to choose an ad. Your phone has more than one advertising layer, so one switch cannot govern every ad you see.
- Platform controls: Android’s Ads privacy features and Apple’s Personalized Ads setting govern advertising systems supplied by those platforms.
- Advertising identifiers: Android can reset or delete its advertising ID. Deleting it removes that particular identifier, but an app may still use other information or identifiers.
- Account controls: Google’s My Ad Center controls personalization for Google services when you are signed in. This is separate from Apple’s device-level advertising switch.
- App controls: Individual apps can have their own privacy settings and policies. Their ads may use app-specific data even after a platform setting is changed.
The practical result is a narrower data trail for the system you changed, not a universal “no targeted ads” mode. The Android and iPhone steps below are complementary: use the ones that match the services and apps you use.
It helps to identify the ad’s likely source before changing settings. An ad in Apple News or the App Store is within the scope of Apple’s controls; an ad shown on a Google service may be affected by your Google Account settings; an ad inside another company’s app may depend on that app’s own policies and identifiers. The same phone can show ads from all of these systems, so seeing an ad after changing one setting does not necessarily mean the switch failed.

Limit ad personalization on Android
Turn off Android’s Ads privacy features
On current Android help documentation, the route is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- Choose All services.
- Under Google services, open Privacy & security.
- Tap Ads.
The Ads privacy page can contain three controls. Availability depends on the Android release, phone manufacturer and Google’s rollout.
- Ad topics: Android may infer topics from the apps used on the device. Turn the feature off to prevent this topic-based control, or remove individual topics when that option is shown.
- App-suggested ads: Apps can ask Android for topics or store app-suggested ads. Turn this off if you do not want that Android feature to provide app-suggested advertising signals.
- Ad measurement: Where available, turn off measurement to limit the associated Android ad-measurement feature.
You may not see a topic list immediately. Google says a list can appear only after the feature is available on the device and apps begin using it. An empty list therefore does not prove that every app has stopped using its own advertising data.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →These controls are not interchangeable. Turning off Ad topics concerns topics derived from app use; App-suggested ads concerns apps requesting or storing those suggestions; Ad measurement concerns measurement. If all three switches are available and you want to limit each of those Android features, review each separately rather than assuming one switch covers the whole page. Google Android Help cautions that an in-app ad may still be personalized according to these settings, advertising ID settings and the policies of the apps you use.
Reset or delete the Android advertising ID
Android’s advertising ID is a device-level identifier used by apps and advertising services. In Android Settings, open the advertising-ID controls (the wording and location vary by release and manufacturer), then choose one of these actions:
- Reset advertising ID: replaces the current identifier with a new one. This breaks the continuity of the old ID, but apps can start associating activity with the replacement.
- Delete advertising ID: removes the identifier instead of creating a replacement. Google says ads will not be based on that advertising ID after deletion.
Deletion is the stronger identifier-level choice, but it is not an app-wide privacy guarantee. Apps may use information shared directly with them, their own identifiers or other signals. An app can therefore continue showing ads selected using data unrelated to Android’s advertising ID.
Think of reset as replacing an identifier and deletion as removing that identifier. Neither action deletes an account, clears an app’s stored information, or changes the app’s own privacy policy. If an app offers its own ad or privacy controls, those remain separate decisions. Google’s Android guidance also explains that deleting the advertising ID does not prevent ads altogether: it means those ads are not based on that ID.
Decide which Android action fits your goal
| Goal | Android control | What it covers | What remains possible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reduce topic-based signals from device app use | Ads privacy > Ad topics | Android’s topic feature, when available | App-specific targeting and other identifiers |
| Stop the Android app-suggested-ads feature | Ads privacy > App-suggested ads | Apps asking Android for topics or storing app-suggested ads | Other app advertising methods |
| Limit Android’s listed ad-measurement feature | Ads privacy > Ad measurement | The feature shown on supported devices | Measurement controlled by an app or another service |
| Break continuity with the existing device identifier | Reset advertising ID | The current advertising ID is replaced | Future activity can be associated with the replacement |
| Remove the Android advertising ID | Delete advertising ID | The Android advertising ID itself | Information shared with apps, other identifiers and contextual targeting |
For the broadest coverage among these Android-specific choices, you can review the Ads privacy features and delete the advertising ID. That still does not control an app’s own data collection or Google Account ad settings. Resetting instead of deleting may suit someone who wants to replace an existing identifier but does not want to leave it removed; it is not the same as opting out of every form of personalization.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Choose Apple Advertising.
- Turn off Personalized Ads.
Apple identifies this control as applying to Apple-delivered ads in the App Store, Apple News and Stocks. It does not configure every third-party app installed on the iPhone.
Apple’s support guidance warns that turning the switch off may not decrease the number of ads you receive; the ads may simply be less relevant. The setting changes how Apple chooses ads, not whether an advertising-supported service has advertising at all.
Apple’s general support page, published on November 15, 2023, describes this as a choice about personalized advertising, not a promise that ads will disappear. If you still see ads in Apple services after switching it off, that is consistent with Apple’s explanation: the switch may change relevance without changing the number of ads.
Block location-based ads in Apple services
Location-based advertising is a separate control. To prevent location access for Apple’s App Store or News:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Choose Location Services.
- Set App Store or News to Never, or turn off Location Services entirely.
Turning off Personalized Ads does not automatically change this permission. Conversely, denying location access does not turn off Apple’s other ad-personalization signals, so treat the two settings as separate decisions.
Choose the narrower permission if you only want to stop location access for App Store or News. Turning off Location Services entirely is broader and affects location access beyond advertising; consider whether you rely on location features in other apps before changing it. These location permissions address location-based ads from Apple in those services, not location practices or ad decisions made by unrelated apps.
If your iPhone uses an older menu label
Apple’s general support instructions note that older iOS and iPadOS versions may label the menu Privacy rather than Privacy & Security. If you cannot find the path, open Settings and search for Apple Advertising, Personalized Ads or Location Services. The exact labels can change with an operating-system update.
Change Google ad personalization on either phone
Use My Ad Center for signed-in Google services
Google account ad controls are independent of the Android Ads privacy page and Apple’s Apple Advertising switch. For a Google account, open Google Account Ad Settings or My Ad Center while signed in, then turn off Personalized ads.
Google says that when personalization is off in My Ad Center, it does not use information and activity saved to your Google Account or your My Ad Center choices to personalize ads on Google services. Ads can still be selected using general factors such as the time of day or the subject of the content you are viewing.

Google’s account-level switch is useful when the ads you want to change appear across Google services, but it should not be mistaken for a device-wide setting. Conversely, changing Apple’s Personalized Ads switch on an iPhone does not switch off Google Account personalization. Google states that on iOS it does not use Apple’s Advertising Identifier (IDFA), or other information in scope of Apple’s App Tracking Transparency policy, for personalized ads and ad-related measurement. This is one reason the Google account setting remains a distinct control on an iPhone.
Change Google ad settings in YouTube on iPhone
The YouTube app exposes a route to Google’s ad controls for signed-in users:
- Open YouTube and tap Account.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy.
- Choose Google ad settings.
- In My Ad Center, turn off Personalized ads.
This is an account-level change, so check that the account shown in YouTube is the one whose ads you want to change.
If you use more than one Google account, verify the active account before adjusting this setting. A change made for one signed-in account should not be assumed to cover a different account you use in another Google app or browser session.

Turn off personalized ads for signed-out YouTube use
If you watch YouTube while signed out, use YouTube’s separate control: open Account, then Settings, History & Privacy, and turn off Allow personalized ads.
Google says signed-out YouTube ads may still depend on contextual signals, including the time of day, your location, recently watched videos or active searches. Disabling this option therefore changes the basis for selection; it does not make YouTube ad-free.
The signed-in and signed-out paths address different viewing states. If you sometimes watch while signed in and sometimes while signed out, check the control for the state you actually use. Google’s examples of contextual factors also explain why an ad can still seem related to your recent activity even when personalized ads are disabled: content, location, searches and viewing context can remain relevant to ad selection.
How the controls work together
| Setting | Primary scope | Identity or signal affected | Separate controls still needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Ads privacy | Android ad topics, app-suggested ads and measurement where available | Android’s topic and feature signals | Advertising ID, app settings and Google account settings |
| Android advertising-ID deletion | Apps and services using Android’s advertising ID | Removes that device identifier | App data, other identifiers and contextual signals |
| Apple Personalized Ads | Apple ads in App Store, Apple News and Stocks | Apple’s ad-personalization choice | Location Services and third-party app settings |
| Apple Location Services permissions | Location-based ads from App Store or News | Location access for the selected Apple service | Apple Personalized Ads and non-location signals |
| Google My Ad Center | Personalized ads on Google services for signed-in users | Google Account activity and My Ad Center choices | Device controls and app-specific settings |
| YouTube signed-out control | Personalization for signed-out YouTube use | YouTube’s signed-out ad-personalization setting | Context such as time, location, watched videos and searches |
The broadest device-identifier action described here is deleting Android’s advertising ID. Platform and account toggles are narrower: they target the advertising system named by the setting. No control listed here is a universal switch for all third-party apps.

Compare the choices by scope, identity layer and remaining signals. Android’s Ads privacy switches address specific Android features; Android ID deletion addresses that one device identifier. Apple’s switch applies to Apple’s own ads, while its location permission specifically controls location access for selected Apple services. My Ad Center follows Google services and the signed-in account, and YouTube’s signed-out control applies when you use YouTube without signing in. Combining relevant settings reduces more of these particular inputs than changing just one, but it still cannot guarantee that all ads stop being personalized by every app or service.
A practical sequence for reducing tracking signals
If you want the most complete coverage supported by these settings, work from the layer you use most often:
- Identify your main ad ecosystem. On Android, start with Settings > Google; on iPhone, start with Apple Advertising if Apple services are the concern. If most ads appear in Google services, also use My Ad Center.
- Apply the platform controls. Android users review Ad topics, App-suggested ads and Ad measurement. iPhone users turn off Apple Personalized Ads and review App Store and News location permissions separately.
- Choose the Android identifier action. Reset the advertising ID if you want a new identifier; delete it if you want the identifier removed and accept that apps may use other signals.
- Check signed-in Google services. Turn off Personalized ads in My Ad Center. This is required even on an iPhone because Apple’s switch does not govern Google’s account-based advertising.
- Check YouTube’s sign-in state. Use Google ad settings when signed in and YouTube’s History & Privacy control when signed out.
- Review individual apps. An app can have its own privacy choices or advertising identifiers. Change those settings where the app provides them.
Take the steps that fit your devices and services; you do not need to change a setting for an ecosystem you do not use. If your concern is location-based ads in Apple News, for example, the specific News location permission is more directly relevant than changing a Google Account preference. If the concern is ads in a signed-in Google service, My Ad Center is the matching account control, whether the phone is Android or iPhone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What you should expect after changing the settings
- Ads can continue to appear. These controls limit personalization inputs; they do not remove advertising from Apple services, Google services or third-party apps.
- Relevance may change rather than volume. Apple specifically says its Personalized Ads switch may leave the number of ads unchanged while making them less relevant.
- Context can still influence an ad. Google describes general factors such as content subject and time of day, and signed-out YouTube can also use location, recently watched videos and active searches.
- Different apps can behave differently. Android’s documentation says an in-app ad may depend on Ads privacy choices, advertising-ID settings and the policies of the apps you use.
- A missing topic list is not an error by itself. Android may not display topics until the feature is available and participating apps begin using it.
Turning off personalization is not the same as blocking ads, preventing an app from collecting all information, or disabling every form of measurement. It changes the use of specific signals by particular advertising systems. You may therefore notice fewer ads that reflect a past interest, while still seeing ads related to the page, video, time, location or other context. The number and appearance of ads can also depend on the service and app policies.
Troubleshoot missing or different settings
The Android Ads page is not present
Android labels and feature availability vary by OS release, manufacturer and rollout. Confirm that you opened Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads, then use the Settings search for Ads or advertising ID. A manufacturer may place the identifier control in a differently named privacy submenu.
Some controls may not be offered on a particular device, and a settings page can differ from the route shown in Google’s current help. Use the on-device search and look for the named control rather than assuming that every Android phone presents identical menus.
An Android topic list is empty
Google notes that topics may not appear until the feature reaches the device and apps begin using it. You can still review the available switches; the absence of listed topics is not evidence that every app has adopted or stopped using the feature.
The iPhone menu says Privacy instead of Privacy & Security
That label is expected on some older iOS and iPadOS releases. Look for Privacy > Apple Advertising and Privacy > Location Services, or use Settings search to locate the same controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAds remain personalized after every switch is off
Check which service delivered the ad. Apple’s setting covers Apple-delivered ads, Google’s My Ad Center covers Google services for the signed-in account, and Android’s advertising-ID action covers only that identifier. The app may be using its own data, another identifier or contextual information. Review the app’s privacy settings and confirm that you changed the correct Google account or YouTube sign-in state.

Also separate an ad that matches the content from one based on account history: Google says general factors such as time of day or the subject of the content can still affect ads when My Ad Center personalization is off. A related-looking ad by itself does not establish which signal was used.
Key takeaways
- On Android, use the Ads privacy page for topics, app-suggested ads and measurement, then decide whether to reset or delete the advertising ID.
- On iPhone, turn off Apple Personalized Ads and separately control App Store and News location access.
- Use Google My Ad Center for signed-in Google services on either phone, and use YouTube’s separate control when signed out.
- Expect fewer personalization signals, not fewer ads everywhere. Apps can still rely on their own data, other identifiers or the context of what you are doing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off personalized ads on Android?
Open Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads. Review Ad topics, App-suggested ads and Ad measurement where available. You can also reset or delete the advertising ID in Android’s advertising-ID controls; menu wording and location vary by phone and Android release.
How do I turn off personalized ads on my iPhone?
For Apple-delivered ads, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising and turn off Personalized Ads. That switch applies to Apple ads in the App Store, Apple News and Stocks, not every app on the iPhone. Older iOS versions may label the menu Privacy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will I still see ads if I turn off ad personalization?
Yes. Turning off personalization changes which signals a system uses to select ads; it does not remove ads. Apple says the number of ads may not decrease, although they may be less relevant. Google services and YouTube may still use general or contextual factors.
Does deleting Android’s advertising ID stop all targeted ads?
No. It removes that Android identifier, so ads will not be based on it, but apps may use information shared directly with them, other identifiers or contextual signals. Individual apps can also have their own privacy settings and policies.
Does Apple’s Personalized Ads setting turn off Google ads on an iPhone?
No. Apple’s control applies to Apple-delivered ads. Google Account personalization is managed separately in My Ad Center, and YouTube has an additional control for signed-out use.
Why do I still see relevant ads after turning personalization off?
The ad may come from a different system or app, or may be selected using context rather than account personalization. Google lists factors such as time of day and content subject; signed-out YouTube ads may also depend on location, recently watched videos or active searches.
The Bottom Line
There is no single switch that limits every personalized ad on a phone. Use Android’s Ads privacy and advertising-ID controls, Apple’s Personalized Ads and relevant Location Services permissions, and Google’s separate account or YouTube controls for the services you use. These steps narrow particular personalization signals, but ads—and app-specific or contextual targeting—can remain.
