Use two separate layers: your browser’s tracking protections limit what websites can collect during browsing, while account privacy controls limit what a signed-in service stores and uses later. Review both. Neither layer makes you anonymous, and neither stops every form of tracking.
Start with a practical baseline: enable your browser’s strongest setting that does not break sites you need, block or partition third-party cookies where available, then review Google Web & App Activity, saved history, and ad personalization. Keep a note of any site exceptions you add, because an exception restores some tracking capability for that site.
What browser tracking controls can—and cannot—do
A website can use cookies, embedded third-party resources, fingerprinting techniques, advertising scripts, and other identifiers while a page loads. Browser protections act at that point of collection: they may block a known tracker, partition its storage so one site cannot read another site’s identifier, or send a preference signal.

Account controls operate on a different data flow. When you are signed in, a service can save searches, browsing-related activity, location information, or interactions to your account. Turning off account activity does not erase identifiers already present in a browser, and clearing local cookies does not automatically remove activity already saved online.

- Browser layer: controls requests, cookies, storage, and tracker technologies used in the browser.
- Account layer: controls retention and personalization of activity associated with a signed-in account.
- Network and device layer: internet providers, employers, schools, apps, and the device itself may still record activity outside these settings.
Protection strength is a trade-off. Aggressive blocking can interfere with sign-in flows, video playback, payment widgets, comments, or embedded social content. A useful setting is the strictest one that leaves your essential sites usable.
Compare the built-in browser protections

These are qualitative differences, not a numerical ranking. Browser behavior and labels can change with platform, version, and gradual rollouts.
How to turn on Chrome’s privacy controls
Understand the Do Not Track request
In current Chrome help, the optional request is under Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies. Turn on the option to send a “Do Not Track” request with your browsing traffic, then save the setting if Chrome presents a confirmation.
This is not equivalent to blocking cookies or scripts. Google Chrome Help states: “Most websites and web services, including Google’s, don’t change their behavior when they receive a Do Not Track request.” Treat it as a site-respecting preference, not enforcement. See Google’s instructions for turning Do Not Track on or off for the current wording on your platform.
Control third-party cookies
In the same Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies area, choose the available blocking option. Chrome may offer a broad block, an incognito-only block, or site-specific exceptions depending on your release and account. Read the explanatory text before selecting the strictest option.

After changing it, test sites that use federated sign-in, shopping carts, payment frames, video players, or embedded comments. If one needed function fails, add an exception only for the affected site rather than reverting globally. Third-party-cookie blocking can also make embedded social widgets behave unexpectedly; browsers sometimes apply compatibility heuristics or exceptions to keep sites working, as described by MDN’s third-party-cookie guide.
Choose a tracking-prevention level in Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge’s menu and select Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Find Tracking prevention.
- Choose Basic, Balanced, or Strict.
What each Edge level means
- Basic blocks fewer trackers and is the compatibility-oriented choice.
- Balanced blocks trackers from sites you have not visited while allowing more commonly needed content. Microsoft recommends this level for most people.
- Strict blocks the most trackers. Microsoft warns that it can prevent sites from working as expected, including video playback or sign-in.
Start with Balanced. Try Strict in a separate profile or for a few days if you want stronger protection, then use Edge’s site exception control when a specific service breaks. Microsoft’s current explanation is at Learn about tracking prevention in Microsoft Edge.

Edge can send Global Privacy Control, a preference that data not be sold or shared for targeted advertising. Microsoft says websites may or may not honor it and that the setting is currently available in the United States. Enable it in Edge’s privacy settings if that preference matches your intent, but do not treat the signal as proof that trackers are blocked. Details are in Microsoft’s Global Privacy Control guidance.
Use Firefox’s built-in tracking protection
Mozilla describes Firefox as protecting against known third-party trackers, social-media trackers, cryptominers, cookies, and fingerprinting technologies. Its Enhanced Tracking Protection setting also enables Total Cookie Protection, which partitions third-party cookies so a cookie created while visiting one site is separated from the same third party when encountered on another site.
Firefox’s labels and menu placement differ between desktop and mobile releases. Open Firefox’s current privacy or tracking-protection panel, select the strongest standard or strict mode that leaves your required sites working, and use the per-site shield control when a page needs an exception. Confirm the wording in Mozilla’s Firefox Privacy Notice; do not assume a desktop path is identical on iOS or Android.

What Safari protects by default
MDN’s cross-browser summary says Safari’s tracking-prevention policy provides third-party-cookie protections by default. That establishes the general behavior, not a permanent promise for every Safari release.

Decide how to handle third-party cookies and broken sites
Third-party cookies are set by a domain different from the site shown in your address bar, often through advertising, analytics, customer-support, video, or social components. Blocking them limits cross-site recognition, but the same mechanism can support legitimate embedded services.
A safer exception workflow
- Enable the browser’s stricter third-party-cookie or tracking setting.
- Visit the site and test sign-in, checkout, media playback, and any embedded tool you actually use.
- When a function fails, identify the specific site or embedded provider shown in the browser’s privacy panel.
- Add the narrowest available exception for that site, not a global allow rule.
- Reload the page, complete the task, and remove the exception later if you no longer need it.
An exception reduces protection for that site. Keep a short list of exceptions so you can audit them after browser updates.
Stop a signed-in Google account from saving activity
Review Web & App Activity
- Open your Google Account and go to Data & privacy.
- Find History settings and open Web & App Activity.
- Choose whether activity should be saved, paused, or automatically deleted according to the options currently shown.
- Review the activity already listed and delete individual items or a selected period when appropriate.
When Web & App Activity is on, the account can include Chrome history if the relevant checkbox is selected and Chrome history sync is enabled. Turning this control off or deleting account history is separate from clearing local history in Chrome. Google’s account instructions are at Find & control your Web & App Activity.

Check the Chrome-history option
Within Web & App Activity, inspect the option that allows Chrome history and activity from sites, apps, and devices that use Google services to be saved. If you do not want Chrome history associated with the account, turn off that option and verify whether Chrome sync remains enabled on each device. Sync and account activity are related but distinct controls: changing one does not automatically change every other device or history store.
Separate local browser history from account history

For a clean-up, perform both relevant operations: clear local data on each device and review or delete the account activity online. If several people use a device, check every browser profile.

Signed-in users can review or turn off personalized ads in Google Ad Settings. Google’s privacy guidance also points to Privacy Checkup and account activity tools for reviewing saved data. These controls affect personalization and account-data use; they do not block trackers across unrelated websites.
- Open your Google Account’s Data & privacy area.
- Open the current Ad settings or Privacy Checkup entry.
- Review personalized-ad controls and turn them off if you do not want activity used to tailor ads.
- Return to activity controls to review retention and deletion separately.
Google says Search privacy settings are being updated and rolled out gradually. If labels differ, use the account’s current Data & privacy or Privacy Checkup interface rather than relying on an older screenshot. Google’s overview is available at How Google protects your privacy and keeps you in control. Employer- or school-managed accounts may restrict or rename these controls.

- Set the browser baseline: choose Edge Balanced or an equivalent standard/strict protection in your browser; enable third-party-cookie blocking if your essential sites continue to work.
- Test important services: sign in, play media, use payment pages, and open embedded tools before tightening settings further.
- Use narrow exceptions: permit only the site that fails, and remove the exception when the need ends.
- Review account retention: inspect Web & App Activity, the Chrome-history option, and automatic deletion choices.
- Clear both locations when needed: remove local browser data and delete account activity as separate tasks.
- Audit after updates: browser releases and account rollouts can change labels, defaults, and available controls.
Limits you should expect
- A Do Not Track request works only when a site chooses to honor it.
- Global Privacy Control is a preference signal, not a universal legal or technical block.
- Browser protections do not prevent an internet provider, employer, school, operating system, installed app, or website from keeping records through other mechanisms.
- Signing out can reduce account association but does not erase browser identifiers or previously saved activity.
- Deleting account history removes the selected records from that account’s activity view; it does not retroactively erase copies held for security, legal, operational, or independent third-party purposes.
The realistic goal is less cross-site recognition and less account-linked retention, with a deliberate balance between privacy and site compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Do Not Track stop websites from tracking me?
No. Chrome sends a request, but Google Chrome Help says most websites and web services, including Google’s, do not change their behavior when they receive it.
Why did blocking third-party cookies break a sign-in or video?
Those features may rely on an embedded service using cross-site cookies. Keep the stricter setting and add the narrowest site exception needed, then remove it when the feature is no longer required.
If I clear Chrome history, is my Google activity deleted?
No. Clearing local history affects the device; Google Web & App Activity controls activity saved to the signed-in account. Perform the two clean-up actions separately.
Can turning off personalized ads block trackers?
No. It changes how Google uses account signals for ad personalization. Browser tracking protections are still needed to limit tracker requests on unrelated websites.
Why are my Google privacy menu labels different?
Google is updating and gradually rolling out Search and privacy settings. Use the current Data & privacy or Privacy Checkup interface shown in your account; managed work or school accounts may also restrict options.
