Use Health Connect as your main control panel. On Android 14 and newer, go to Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy controls > Health Connect. On Android 13 and older, open or install Health Connect, then find it through Settings > Apps > All apps > Health Connect. In Permissions and data > App permissions, select each health app and turn off all access or only the data types and read/write permissions it does not need. Then review the app’s ordinary Android permissions separately. Revoking access blocks future access through that permission, but it does not automatically erase data already stored in Health Connect or copies an app has retained.
Which Android controls govern health data?
Android exposes health information through more than one permission surface. The controls in Health Connect govern an app’s access to health data shared through Health Connect. Android’s own app-permission screen governs access to phone features and sensors such as physical activity sensors, location, the camera or microphone. You need to check both surfaces when you want the narrowest practical access.

Changing a Health Connect permission does not change the Android permissions listed for the same app, and deleting Health Connect records does not necessarily delete a copy held by the app. Treat these as separate jobs.

Check your Android version and prepare
Android 14 or newer
Health Connect is integrated into Settings on these versions. Open Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy controls > Health Connect. Manufacturers can rename or rearrange menus, so use Settings search for “Health Connect” if the path is different.

Android 13 or older
Health Connect is an app. Open it directly, or use Settings > Apps > All apps > Health Connect to launch its information page. If it is not installed, install Health Connect from the official Google Play listing before attempting to manage connected apps.
Have the health app identified
Make a list of the apps that may handle health information, including fitness trackers, sleep tools, nutrition logs and medical-record viewers. An app can appear in Health Connect even when its ordinary Android permission list looks harmless, and an app can request sensor access without using Health Connect at all.
Revoke or narrow an app’s Health Connect access
Health Connect lets you remove every permission from an app or preserve only the functions you actually use. Read and write permissions are independent: an app that only displays your steps may need read access to activity data but not permission to write new records.
- Open Health Connect. Use the Android-version route above.
- Open the app list. Tap Permissions and data > App permissions.
- Select the health app. Review the permissions shown for that app, including the data categories and whether each permission is for reading or writing.
- Choose the minimum access. Turn Allow all off to revoke all Health Connect read and write access, or disable only the categories and actions the app does not require.
- Save and verify. Return to the app-permissions list and confirm that the app now shows only the intended access, or no access at all.
- Repeat for other apps. Connected apps retain their own permission choices, so changing one app does not change another.
For a complete reset, use Remove access for all apps in the app-permissions area. This revokes every connected app’s Health Connect permissions at once; you can grant back only the connections you still need.
Choosing read versus write
- Read access: allows an app to retrieve records already available in Health Connect. Disable it when the app should not see your history.
- Write access: allows an app to add or update records in Health Connect. Disable it when you want to keep an app from contributing data while still allowing it to display information, if read access remains enabled.
- Data-type access: disable categories unrelated to the app’s purpose. For example, a step counter may not need nutrition, sleep or reproductive-health records.
If an app stops working after narrowing access, restore only the specific category or action named in its error message rather than selecting Allow all automatically.

See which apps accessed your data recently
A current permission list tells you what an app can do now; it does not tell you what it did earlier. Health Connect’s Recent Access view records apps that accessed or stored data during the previous 24 hours.
- Open Health Connect.
- Open Recent Access.
- Tap See all recent access.
- Review each app and the activity shown for that 24-hour period.
Use Permissions and data > App permissions to investigate an app’s current read and write access. The data browser can also show which apps currently have, or no longer have, access to a particular data type. A blank Recent Access list does not prove that an app never accessed data; it only covers the documented 24-hour window.

Review the app’s ordinary Android permissions
Health Connect permissions are not a substitute for Android’s app-level controls. A health app may use phone sensors or features directly, without requesting the corresponding data through Health Connect.
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Tap Apps (sometimes Apps & notifications), then select the health app.
- Tap Permissions.
- Check each listed permission against a feature you intend to keep.
- Set unnecessary permissions to Don’t allow, or choose the least-access option offered by that Android build.
Google’s instructions for its Google Health app use Settings > Apps > Health > Permissions. Your phone may use different labels or place sensor controls under a separate Privacy menu. If you cannot find a permission, search Settings for the app name or the permission name.
Common decisions
- Keep a sensor permission only when you need live tracking or automatic measurements.
- Turn off location when the app does not need route maps or location-based measurements.
- Turn off camera or microphone access unless the app’s core feature requires scanning, recording or calls.
- When Android offers one-time, while-in-use or approximate choices, select the least persistent option that still supports the feature.
These Android settings limit future sensor or feature access. They do not erase records that the app already uploaded or synchronized.

Understand what revoking access does—and does not do
What revocation changes
Removing an app’s Health Connect connection revokes its read and write permissions. The app should no longer be able to use Health Connect through that connection unless you grant permission again. Turning off an individual data type or read/write action has the same narrower effect for that permission.
What revocation does not change
Changing permissions does not delete data already stored in Health Connect. It also does not automatically delete a copy the app made while it had permission. A connected service may retain data it shared with Health Connect, and another phone, wearable or cloud account may hold its own copy.
To remove an app’s copy, open that app’s privacy, account or data-management controls and use its deletion option if available. Deleting the app itself is not proof that its server-side account data has been erased; use the service’s documented account-deletion process when you need that result.
Delete data from Health Connect separately
Health Connect provides controls to delete categories or individual entries from its on-device database. This is a different action from revoking access.
- Open Health Connect and locate its data-management or data-browser area.
- Choose the category or records to remove.
- Confirm the deletion when Android presents the prompt.
- Check the originating app, wearable and any synchronized account separately if you need copies removed everywhere.
Google states that individual medical-record entries cannot be deleted from Health Connect. Health-record data therefore needs special care: review the service that supplied it and follow that service’s deletion process where one exists. Deleting Health Connect data also does not remove copies from other apps or devices.

Know the time windows and medical-record exception
Regular health data
After you grant an app permission, Google’s setup guidance says the app can access the previous 30 days of health data and new data written after permission is granted. This is an access window, not a promise that the app has no older copy from another source.
Health records
The 30-day limit does not apply to health records. With the required permission, an app can access historical medical data. If you are limiting access for privacy, inspect health-record permissions specifically rather than assuming the ordinary 30-day rule protects them.
Copies outside Health Connect
An app may retain a copy of information it received. Health Connect’s on-device storage does not mean every connected service stores data only on your phone. Consider the app account, cloud synchronization, a wearable and any backup as separate locations.
Use a least-access review plan

Troubleshoot common problems
Health Connect is missing
On Android 14 or newer, search Settings for Health Connect and look under Security and privacy. On Android 13 or older, look for the Health Connect app under Settings > Apps > All apps. Menu names vary by manufacturer. If the app is absent on an older version, install the official Health Connect app before continuing.

An app appears in Health Connect only after it integrates with Health Connect and requests a connection. Review the app’s own Android permission page as well. An app that collects data directly from a wearable or its own account may not be represented in Health Connect’s app list.

The app keeps asking for permission
The app may require a category or read/write action you disabled. Grant only the requested item, then test again. If prompts continue, inspect the app’s account settings and its Android permissions; repeated prompts do not justify enabling every Health Connect category.
Data still appears after access was revoked
Revocation stops future access through that permission, but existing records remain in Health Connect and an app may already have copied them. Delete the relevant Health Connect records and use the app or device’s own deletion controls for other copies.
Recent Access shows activity you did not expect
Note the app and activity, then open its permissions page to see whether read or write access is still enabled. Revoke the connection if you no longer trust it, and review the app’s own privacy and account controls for data already transferred.

Important platform limits
- Health Connect does not support Android Work Profiles, so a work-profile installation may not be manageable through the same controls.
- Permission labels and menu paths vary by Android release and phone manufacturer.
- Android 16-targeting apps must use more specific health permissions for certain body-sensor access under Google Play policy guidance. On newer devices, a sensor permission name may therefore be more specific than instructions written for an older Android release.
- Recent Access covers the preceding 24 hours, not a complete historical audit.
- Health Connect deletion affects its on-device database; it is not a universal deletion command for apps, wearables or cloud services.
A practical privacy checklist
- Open Health Connect using the route for your Android version.
- List every connected health app under Permissions and data > App permissions.
- For each app, disable unrelated data types and write access.
- Use Recent Access > See all recent access to check the prior 24 hours.
- Open each app’s Android Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions page and remove unnecessary sensor or feature access.
- Delete Health Connect records separately when deletion, rather than permission control, is your goal.
- Use each app, wearable and account’s own privacy controls to remove retained copies.
- Recheck permissions after app updates, device migration or reconnecting a wearable.
These steps give you control over which apps can read or write shared health data, while making the remaining limits explicit: permission changes govern future access, and data deletion must be handled at every location where a copy exists.
