You can reduce Facebook and other sites’ ability to track you across the web, but no single browser setting guarantees that tracking stops completely. Turn on your browser’s tracking protections, review Meta’s current activity-sharing controls, and avoid signing in to unrelated sites with Facebook when you have another practical option.
What browser protections can—and cannot—stop
Some websites include trackers that send information about your visit to other companies. Browser protections can block certain tracking requests or restrict cross-site cookies, making it harder to connect activity across sites. But a browser cannot control every way a business may share information with Meta: businesses can send activity information directly through their own systems.
These protections also do not stop activity tracking while you use Facebook or other Meta services. Treat them as ways to limit particular tracking methods, not as a way to become anonymous or prevent all information sharing.

Firefox: use Enhanced Tracking Protection
Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection is enabled by default. Mozilla says it blocks common social-media trackers and cross-site tracking cookies. For more restrictive blocking, open the Firefox menu, choose Settings, then Privacy & Security, and select Strict under Enhanced Tracking Protection. Strict mode blocks all cross-site cookies and additional tracking content, but some site features—including logins, payments, or embedded media—may stop working. If a site breaks, Mozilla says you can turn off protection for that site using the shield icon in the address bar. Mozilla explains Firefox’s tracking protections and site controls.

Safari on Mac: prevent cross-site tracking
In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Privacy, then enable Prevent cross-site tracking. Apple says this feature blocks tracking through social-media buttons, which can track visits even when you do not click them. Apple also describes a simplified system configuration intended to reduce fingerprinting, a method of identifying a browser from characteristics of its setup. These are browser protections, not controls over information a business shares directly with Meta. See Apple’s Safari privacy settings guidance.
Optional: add Privacy Badger
EFF’s Privacy Badger is an optional browser extension that blocks forms of tracking that built-in browser protections may miss. It can add another layer, but it is not a guarantee against all tracking or business-to-business data sharing. EFF’s Privacy Badger guide describes how it works.

Review Meta’s current activity-sharing control
Meta announced in June 2026 that it would expand the Activity from other businesses control and discontinue Your activity off Meta technologies. Look for the current control in your Meta Accounts Center or account settings; the exact location and available choices may vary by platform, region, or account. Older instructions that tell everyone to use “Your activity off Meta technologies” may no longer match the current interface.

The company said in its June 2026 announcement, “We’re not collecting any new data as part of this update, and you’re in control of how we use this data to personalize your experience.” That is Meta’s characterization of the change, not an independent verification of its data practices. Meta also said it personalizes the experiences of 3.5 billion people who use its apps and services every day; that is a company-published figure, not an independent measurement. Use Facebook Login only when you need it
When an unrelated site offers Facebook Login, choose a separate account or another login method if that is practical. Logging in with Facebook creates a connection between your Facebook account and that service, and Mozilla notes that signing in this way can expose activity to the social network. Meta has also historically described Facebook Login as one of the business tools through which it may receive activity information. Mozilla explains how Facebook logins can affect tracking.
Choose protections with the trade-offs in mind

A practical order for tightening privacy
- Enable the built-in protection. In Firefox, leave Enhanced Tracking Protection on; try Strict if you accept possible site breakage. In Safari on Mac, enable Prevent cross-site tracking.
- Check Meta’s current setting. Find Activity from other businesses in Accounts Center or account settings and review the choices shown for your account.
- Disconnect unnecessary social logins. For unrelated services, use a separate login where feasible rather than Facebook Login.
- Troubleshoot selectively. If a site feature fails, use the browser’s per-site protection controls where available instead of disabling protection everywhere.
Why private browsing and a VPN are not complete fixes
Private browsing does not make you anonymous to websites you visit, and a VPN does not prevent a site or business from collecting information through its own services or sharing it with Meta. Blocking third-party cookies also addresses only one set of tracking mechanisms. The protections above reduce particular browser-based forms of tracking; they cannot guarantee that all companies stop collecting or sharing activity information.
