The reliable way to reduce a connected car’s data sharing is to audit three layers separately: the vehicle’s infotainment settings, the automaker’s app or account, and every third-party service paired with the car. There is no universal switch that stops all collection. Menu names, available controls and feature impacts depend on the make, model, model year, country and service.

Start by recording which features you need, then disable only the categories you do not want to share. Read each warning before saving the change, because privacy controls can affect remote commands, profiles, diagnostics, navigation and other connected functions.

What a connected car may collect

Modern vehicles can generate and transmit much more than an odometer reading. Depending on the vehicle and service, information may include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Geolocation: current, recent or precise location data.
  • Telematics: vehicle-generated operating and trip information.
  • Driving behavior and usage: how, when and where the vehicle is driven.
  • Diagnostics: fault codes, system status and information used for remote troubleshooting.
  • Video: camera-derived information where the vehicle has cameras or video services.
  • Biometric and other personal information: categories that may be associated with an identified driver or account.

The exact categories, purposes, retention periods and recipients are service-specific. A setting that stops sharing one category does not necessarily stop the car from collecting another, and a vehicle-level setting may not control a separate app provider.

Before changing a privacy setting

Identify the exact vehicle and services

Write down the make, model, model year and country in which the vehicle is registered. Also list the automaker’s mobile app, navigation or media accounts, insurance or driving-score programs, roadside assistance, fleet tools and any other service paired with the car. Privacy controls can differ between two model years of the same vehicle and can also change by country.

Save information you may need later

Before disabling anything, note the current setting, the feature it supports and any account or subscription attached to it. Take a photograph of the relevant screen if the menu does not provide an export. This makes it easier to restore a feature temporarily for a diagnostic visit or a trip.

Use the owner’s manual and current privacy page

Search the manual and the manufacturer’s current privacy or connected-services page for terms such as Privacy, Data Sharing, Connectivity, Permissions and Connected Services. Do not assume a menu path from another model applies to yours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I turn off data sharing in my car?

Use this sequence. It separates controls that are often confused and lets you test the effect of each change.

  1. Open the vehicle’s settings. From the infotainment home screen, inspect Settings, then look for Privacy, Data Sharing, Connectivity, Permissions or Connected Services. Some systems place these choices under a driver profile or a general system menu.
  2. Read the description for every switch. Determine whether the choice controls collection, use, sharing, or only a particular service. A label such as “improve products” may cover a different purpose from “remote diagnostics.”
  3. Review categories individually. Where offered, inspect location, driving behavior or usage, diagnostics, profiles and connected services as separate choices. Avoid changing several switches at once if you need to know which feature stopped working.
  4. Change one setting and confirm. Select the least data-intensive option that meets your needs, accept the confirmation prompt and verify that the new state is saved after leaving and reopening the menu.
  5. Test essential functions. Check the functions you rely on, such as remote locking, vehicle status, navigation, profile sign-in or roadside assistance. The manufacturer’s warning is the best source for model-specific consequences.
  6. Repeat the review in the automaker’s app and account. A vehicle screen may not change account-level permissions, marketing choices, service enrollment or data-access requests.
  7. Audit third-party services. Open each connected app or service and review its own permissions, terms and account controls. Revoke access or disconnect the service when its collection is not worth the feature.

Examples of manufacturer menu paths

These are illustrations, not universal instructions. Tesla states that owners can enable or disable data sharing from the vehicle touchscreen. Lucid documents a path labeled Connectivity Settings > Data Sharing Permissions. Your vehicle may use different labels, place the controls in an app, or offer fewer choices.

Which data-sharing controls should you review?

Control area Information it may cover Where to look Possible effect of disabling it
Location Vehicle location, including precise geolocation where supported Vehicle privacy menu, automaker account and individual services Navigation, location-based functions or remote features may change; the exact effect is model- and service-specific
Driving behavior or usage Trip, driving-pattern and usage information Vehicle settings, automaker account, driving-score or insurance enrollment Driving scores, insurance programs or related personalization may stop or lose data
Diagnostics Fault, health and system-status information Connected-services settings and service-support pages Some remote diagnostics or proactive support may no longer work
Profiles and connected services Account, profile, command and service-interaction data Vehicle profiles, automaker app and paired-service accounts Profile sign-in or restoration, PIN resets, mobile-app interaction and other connected functions may be affected

Lucid specifically warns that changing data-sharing permissions can affect profile sign-in and restoration, PIN resets, mobile-app interaction and some remote diagnostics. Treat that warning as an example of the trade-off, not as a guarantee that every vehicle behaves the same way.

Compare a control before you switch it

When several permissions appear together, compare them on five points: the data category, where the permission applies, whether it limits collection or only onward sharing, which features depend on it, and whether you can reverse the choice. This prevents an unnecessarily broad shutdown.

Question What to verify
What data is covered? Look for precise location, trips, driving behavior, diagnostics, profile information or video rather than relying on a general “privacy” label.
Which layer does it control? Confirm whether the switch is in the vehicle, the automaker account or a separate provider’s app. A change in one layer may leave the others unchanged.
Does it stop collection, sharing or both? Read the explanatory text and privacy notice. Some choices limit disclosure while information continues to be collected or retained for another purpose.
What stops working? Check warnings for remote commands, navigation, profile restoration, PIN resets, diagnostics, insurance features and other services you use.
Can it be reversed? Record the original state and any confirmation screen. If the setting can be restored, you can re-enable it for a support appointment and disable it again afterward.

Do not infer that a switch is permanent, universal or retroactive. Ask the automaker whether the setting applies to future data only and what process covers information already held by the company or a partner.

Review the automaker’s app and online account

A touchscreen setting is only one layer of control. Sign in to the automaker’s current app and website, then inspect the privacy, connected-services and account-permissions areas.

Look for these account-level choices

  • Connected-service enrollment and remote-command permissions.
  • Location, usage or driving-behavior sharing.
  • Diagnostics and service-support permissions.
  • Driving-score, insurance or other partner-program enrollment.
  • Requests to access, copy or delete data, where your country and service provide them.
  • Marketing and communications preferences, which are separate from operational data collection.

Changing a marketing preference does not necessarily stop operational, diagnostic or safety-related processing. Read the purpose attached to each control and save confirmation screens or emails for your records.

Check for account conflicts

If more than one person is an authorized driver, confirm which account owns the vehicle and which profile is active when you change a setting. A guest profile may expose fewer controls than the primary owner account. After an app update or a vehicle software update, revisit the menu because labels and available choices can change. If the app shows a different state from the touchscreen, capture both screens and ask support which permission is controlling the data flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Third-party apps can keep collecting data

Navigation, media, insurance, fleet, roadside and other apps may receive information under their own terms. A vehicle-level choice may not withdraw the permissions you granted directly to those providers. For each service:

  1. Open the provider’s account or privacy page.
  2. Review what vehicle data it receives and why.
  3. Remove the vehicle, revoke account access or disable optional data uses when available.
  4. Check whether the service retains previously collected information and whether it offers an access or deletion request.
  5. Repeat the check after a vehicle reset or account change, because pairing can sometimes be restored.

If a provider has no in-app control, use the privacy contact or request process described in its terms. Do not assume that uninstalling a phone app deletes the provider’s server-side data or disconnects the vehicle account.

Privacy-request services and physical accessories

There is no established generic accessory that changes a built-in modem’s permissions or overrides an automaker account. A signal blocker or OBD-II device can interfere with communications and safety or service functions without changing information already stored by the manufacturer or a third party. Do not buy one as a substitute for using the vehicle, account and provider controls.

Some vehicle-privacy request services, including Privacy4Cars, are described in secondary reporting as helping people locate or submit access or deletion requests. Treat such a service as optional assistance, not as a technical privacy switch. Check its current vehicle coverage, identity-verification requirements, fees, timing, data handling and any affiliate relationship before submitting information. You can also use the automaker’s own privacy contact when it provides a request process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the smallest privacy change that meets your goal

Different goals call for different controls. Use the following decision guide rather than switching off every service blindly.

If you want to reduce location exposure

Start with precise-location and location-sharing choices in the vehicle, automaker account and paired services. Confirm whether navigation, emergency assistance or remote functions depend on location before disabling them. A control may stop sharing while the vehicle still retains data needed for a service, so read the description for the distinction between collection and sharing.

If you want to stop driving-behavior sharing

Check both the vehicle’s usage settings and any driving-score or insurance enrollment. Removing the enrollment may stop future participation, while a separate account request may be needed for previously collected data. Confirm the effect on scores, discounts or other program features before saving.

If you want fewer diagnostic transmissions

Inspect remote-diagnostics and service-support permissions. Disabling them can prevent a support team from seeing some vehicle information remotely. You may need to provide fault details manually or approve a one-time diagnostic session later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want to keep remote app commands

Do not disable the broadest connected-services switch first. Review narrower choices for product improvement, optional usage sharing or partner services, then test remote status and commands. The available granularity varies by vehicle.

What to do when there is no obvious privacy switch

A missing menu does not prove that the vehicle collects nothing or that no control exists. Work through these checks:

  • Search the manual for the terms data, privacy, consent, connected, telematics and permissions, not just “sharing.”
  • Check the automaker’s app and web account while signed in as the primary owner.
  • Review the connected-service agreement and privacy notice for a request, opt-out or deletion process.
  • Ask manufacturer support for the exact control for your model year and country, and ask whether it stops collection, sharing or both.
  • Check every paired service separately; the vehicle may not have authority over that provider’s data practices.

If a switch is unavailable, greyed out or returns after a restart, record the screen wording and ask support whether a required safety, emergency or subscription function depends on it. Do not unplug or alter the vehicle’s communications hardware as a substitute for an account or consent control; that can disable safety and service functions without changing data already held by the manufacturer or a third party.

When a setting appears not to work

First confirm that you saved the change while connected to the vehicle’s account and that the correct driver profile was active. Restart the infotainment system only as the manual permits, then check the setting again. If it reverts, note the date, software version shown in the vehicle, exact wording and any error message. Ask support whether a subscription, emergency feature or legal requirement prevents the change, and request written instructions for your model year. Avoid repeatedly toggling a control while driving; make changes while parked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to clear data before selling or transferring the car

Complete the privacy cleanup before handing over the keys. The previous owner’s account, paired phones and stored destinations can otherwise remain accessible.

  1. Delete driver profiles, saved addresses, contacts, call history, messages, media accounts and garage-door or smart-home credentials stored in the vehicle.
  2. Remove every paired phone, key, wearable and other Bluetooth or Wi-Fi device.
  3. Use the vehicle’s factory-reset or erase-personal-data function if one is available. Follow the manual’s warning about what the reset removes.
  4. Disconnect the vehicle from the automaker’s mobile app and online account, and remove the vehicle from your account after confirming that ownership transfer is complete.
  5. Cancel, transfer or separately close connected-service subscriptions, roadside plans, insurance programs and third-party integrations.
  6. Ask the automaker and relevant providers whether you can access or delete retained personal data under the process available in your country.
  7. Keep confirmation of the reset, account removal and subscription changes.

A factory reset clears information stored in the vehicle; it does not automatically erase copies already transmitted to the automaker, an app provider or another service.

United States: what the January 2026 FTC GM/OnStar order means

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s January 2026 announcement describes a finalized order applying specifically to General Motors and OnStar. For 20 years, the companies must obtain affirmative express consent before collecting, using or sharing covered connected-vehicle data, subject to limited exceptions. The order also requires ways for U.S. consumers to request a copy of data and seek deletion, disable precise-geolocation collection when the vehicle has the necessary technology, and opt out of geolocation and driver-behavior collection subject to limited exceptions. It imposes a five-year ban on disclosing covered data to consumer reporting agencies.

This is a company-specific U.S. order, not a universal rule for every automaker, vehicle or country. Your available rights and menu options still depend on jurisdiction, vehicle technology and service terms. Use the manufacturer’s current privacy process and applicable local law for your situation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming one toggle controls everything: vehicle, account and third-party settings are separate layers.
  • Confusing collection with sharing: a choice may limit disclosure without deleting retained data or stopping internal use.
  • Ignoring feature warnings: privacy changes can affect sign-in, PIN resets, app interaction, diagnostics, navigation or other functions.
  • Using a generic accessory as a privacy solution: a signal blocker or OBD device is not an account permission and is not established as a way to change manufacturer data practices.
  • Forgetting a previous owner’s services: subscriptions and paired accounts may continue after a phone is removed unless you close them explicitly.
  • Assuming a reset erases remote copies: information already sent to an automaker or provider may require a separate access or deletion request.
  • Changing settings while driving: pull over and use the manual’s safe procedure instead of interacting with menus in motion.

Review the settings again after a vehicle change, app update, ownership transfer or new connected-service enrollment. Privacy choices are most effective when you treat each data flow as a separate permission and verify the result on the service that receives the information.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop my car from sharing my data?

Check the vehicle’s Privacy, Data Sharing, Connectivity or Permissions menus, then repeat the review in the automaker’s app or account and in every paired third-party service. Disable only the categories you do not need, because one vehicle switch rarely controls every data flow.

How do I turn off data sharing in my car without losing remote commands?

Keep the broad connected-services permission enabled if required, and first disable narrower options such as optional usage, product-improvement or partner sharing. Test vehicle status and remote commands after each change; the exact dependency is model-specific.

Does turning off location sharing stop all location collection?

Not necessarily. A control may limit sharing while the vehicle or a service continues to collect or retain location for another purpose. Read whether the setting addresses collection, use or disclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a factory reset delete data held by the automaker?

No. A reset generally clears information stored in the vehicle. Ask the automaker and connected providers separately about access or deletion of copies already transmitted.

Will disconnecting my phone stop a navigation or insurance app from collecting data?

Not always. Remove the vehicle or revoke access in that provider’s account and review its retention and deletion process. Uninstalling the phone app alone may not close the vehicle account.

What should I do if the privacy setting is missing or greyed out?

Check the owner’s manual, the primary owner’s online account and the connected-service agreement. Ask manufacturer support whether a safety, emergency or subscription function controls the setting and whether it limits collection, sharing or both.

Are signal blockers or OBD-II devices a reliable privacy fix?

No. They are not established account permissions and can interfere with safety or service functions without changing data already held by the manufacturer or a third party.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I remove before selling my connected car?

Delete profiles and stored destinations, remove paired devices, use the available factory-reset function, disconnect the automaker app and account, close or transfer subscriptions, and contact providers about retained data.

The Bottom Line

Audit privacy at three levels: the car, the automaker account and each connected service. Change the narrowest permission that meets your goal, verify which features are affected, and remember that a factory reset or phone removal does not erase copies already held elsewhere.
