The reliable way to limit an AI agent is to enforce least-privilege permissions outside the model. Give it only the tools, records, accounts and actions required for the current task; make a trusted executor check the agent, resource, arguments and policy at run time; require specific human approval for consequential operations; and monitor, expire or revoke access. A prompt telling the agent to “be safe” can guide behavior, but it does not remove capabilities granted by connected services.
What actually determines an agent’s authority?
An agent can plan and call tools, but the connected tool, API gateway or service ultimately decides whether an operation succeeds. If an integration gives an agent write access to a customer database, the model’s system prompt cannot turn that capability into read-only access. Conversely, a carefully written prompt is not a substitute for an authorization check.
OWASP describes the boundary clearly: “This classification does not grant permission to run a tool; the execution component must still check the actor’s authorization and any required approval for the exact action.” Read the full OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet for the control model. Treat the model as an untrusted requester of an operation, not as the enforcement point.

Microsoft summarizes the exposure in its guidance on reducing autonomous agentic AI risk: every agent-to-tool, agent-to-service and agent-to-agent interaction expands the attack surface and can enable indirect prompt injection, unintended actions or data exfiltration. Limiting access therefore means reducing both what the agent can see and what it can cause.

Start by defining the one task the agent must perform
Write the task as a short authorization record before selecting a model or connecting an integration. A useful record names the actor, purpose, resources, operations, destination and end time. “Manage email” is too broad; “find the three messages from the shipping carrier in this mailbox, summarize them, and save the summary as a draft” is testable.
Task-scoping questions
- What exact outcome is required, and which one or two operations produce it?
- Which service, workspace, database, folder, record set or API endpoint is needed?
- Does the agent need to read, create, modify, send, delete, purchase, deploy or change permissions?
- Which fields or files are necessary, and which sensitive fields can be masked or omitted?
- Who owns the resource and who may approve an exceptional action?
- When does access end: after a single operation, at the end of the task, or at a fixed time?
Remove unrelated tools, wildcard resource selectors and administrator roles. If the task can be completed with one repository and one API method, do not expose an entire organization or a general-purpose shell.
Design permissions in separate layers
Use multiple independent controls so a model mistake or compromised integration does not become an unrestricted account action. The following layers should be explicit in your design.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Layer | What to constrain | Example control |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Which agent or workload is making the request | Issue a distinct, identifiable service identity rather than sharing a person’s broad account. |
| Tool | Which functions are callable | Expose a ticket-search function, not an unrestricted HTTP client or shell. |
| Resource | Which data or objects the function may reach | Allow records in one project or mailbox folder, not every tenant record. |
| Action | What operation is permitted | Permit GET and draft creation while denying send, delete and permission changes. |
| Arguments | Values supplied to the operation | Restrict destination domains, monetary limits, file paths and query size. |
| Duration | How long the grant remains valid | Use a task token that expires when the run ends or after a short maximum lifetime. |
| Approval | Which actions need a person’s decision | Pause before sending externally, spending, deleting, deploying or changing access. |
| Network and isolation | Where execution and data can flow | Run in a sandbox with allow-listed egress and no access to unrelated internal networks. |
| Audit and revocation | How activity is observed and stopped | Log every call and provide an operator control to disable the identity or integration. |
Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance for agent identities explains why these boundaries should be managed as an access lifecycle, not as a single prompt or one-time setup: Least privilege for AI agents with Microsoft Entra Agent ID.
Implement a least-privilege agent step by step
- Create an operation inventory. List each tool call the workflow genuinely needs. Record its service, endpoint, data classification, operation type, expected arguments and owner.
- Remove broad capabilities. Disable unused plugins, generic browsing or shell access, administrative APIs and wildcard scopes. A tool that is not needed for the task should not be installed or advertised to the agent.
- Issue a separate identity. Bind the workflow to an identifiable agent or workload identity. Avoid using a human’s all-purpose session when a service identity can be limited to the task.
- Apply resource filters. Restrict projects, folders, rows, tenants, repositories and environments. Enforce the filter in the service or gateway; do not rely on the model to select the right records.
- Split methods by risk. Keep read, draft and preview operations separate from send, commit, delete, purchase, deploy and permission-management methods.
- Set argument policies. Validate destination, recipient, amount, file path, record identifier, query range and payload size before execution. Reject unexpected or out-of-policy values.
- Attach an expiry. Prefer a grant that ends when the task completes. If that is not practical, set a short time limit and define who can revoke it immediately.
- Place approvals at the boundary. When an operation meets a high-impact rule, stop execution and show a human the exact action, data, destination and consequence.
- Log and test. Record the identity, tool, resource, arguments, decision, approver, result and timestamp. Test denied paths as well as successful ones before production.
Separate reading from acting
Many useful agent jobs are informational. Research, classification and summarization generally need read-only access, while changing state requires a second authorization path. Design the tools so the distinction is technically visible:
- Read: search approved records, retrieve a specified file, inspect status or calculate a value without changing the source.
- Prepare: generate a draft, proposed patch, purchase cart or deployment plan in an isolated location.
- Act: send a message, publish a change, charge an account, delete data, alter permissions or deploy to a live environment.
A draft tool should return an object a person can inspect, not silently call the send endpoint afterward. Use separate credentials or policy scopes for each stage so a read-only workflow cannot escalate simply by emitting a different argument.

Enforce authorization in a trusted executor
The executor may be an API gateway, tool server, policy engine or service-side authorization layer. It should evaluate every request using the authenticated agent identity, requested resource, operation, arguments and current policy. Do not accept a model-generated statement such as “the user approved this” as proof of approval.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Checks to perform on every call
- Authenticate the calling identity and verify that its credential is current and intended for this workflow.
- Resolve the requested resource to a canonical identifier; reject ambiguous names and path traversal.
- Compare the operation with the identity’s allow-list and the task’s current scope.
- Validate arguments, including recipients, destinations, amounts, file types, record ownership and environment.
- Determine whether the operation crosses an approval threshold or requires a fresh confirmation.
- Return the minimum data needed for the next step and redact secrets or unrelated records.
- Write an immutable audit event before and after execution, including a denial reason when blocked.
Authorization must be rechecked at execution time because policies, ownership and approval status can change while an agent is planning. Tool descriptions can explain intended use, but they are not security controls.
Use narrow identities and keep credentials out of agent context
Prefer a scoped workload identity or delegated token whose permissions match one workflow. Keep authentication material in the integration or execution layer whenever the platform permits it, rather than placing keys, cookies or long-lived session text in prompts, retrieved documents or model-visible memory. The exact storage and token-exchange mechanism is platform-dependent, so verify the implementation with the service’s current security documentation.
Do not “solve” a failed call by giving the agent an administrator credential. Investigate whether the resource scope, method, tenant, environment or approval state is wrong. If temporary elevation is unavoidable, make it a separately issued grant with a narrow purpose, an expiry and an audit trail.
Limit duration, memory and retained data
Access should last for the task, not for the lifetime of an account. A task-scoped grant can be revoked when the run finishes; a time-limited grant is the fallback when completion detection is unreliable. Revoke immediately when a job is cancelled, a user leaves the role, an integration changes ownership or suspicious activity appears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteApply the same principle to memory. Decide which inputs, outputs and conversation state the agent may retain, for how long and for which future runs. Do not let a summary of one customer, project or employee become an unbounded knowledge source for unrelated tasks. Expire cached tokens, temporary files and generated artifacts alongside the authorization that created them.

Require specific human approval for consequential actions
OpenAI’s guidance on understanding prompt injections recommends limiting an agent to the data it needs and using confirmation for actions with meaningful consequences. Approval is most important for sending information externally, spending money, deleting or overwriting data, changing permissions, publishing content and deploying code.
What an approval request should show
- The named agent identity and the task that initiated the request.
- The exact operation and irreversible or external effects.
- The records, files or fields being used.
- The destination, recipients, environment or account affected.
- Amounts, limits, diffs or other values a reviewer can check.
- How long the approval remains valid and whether it covers one action or a defined batch.
Never turn a single click into open-ended approval for all future tool calls. Bind the decision to the displayed action, resource and destination. If the agent changes any material detail, require a new decision. A person approving a draft email to one recipient has not approved a different message to a mailing list.
Design for prompt injection and untrusted content
Documents, web pages, emails, tickets and tool results can contain instructions aimed at the agent. Treat those instructions as data unless a trusted policy explicitly authorizes them. Prompt-injection defenses are imperfect, so reduce the damage an injected instruction could cause by narrowing permissions and isolating execution. OWASP’s AI Agent and MCP Security guidance covers this defense-in-depth approach.
Recommended Free Tools
Practical containment measures
- Pass untrusted content in a clearly separated data channel and tell the model it cannot redefine policy or grant access.
- Do not expose secrets, system prompts or unrelated records in the same context as hostile content.
- Use a sandbox for code, file conversion and browser automation; deny access to local credentials and internal network ranges.
- Allow-list outbound domains and data types. Block arbitrary uploads, callbacks and cross-tenant requests.
- Require a human gate before an injected page could cause an external send, purchase, deletion or deployment.
- Test realistic attacks, including instructions hidden in attachments, comments, search results and tool metadata.
Isolation does not make an agent trustworthy; it limits the blast radius when content manipulation or a model error succeeds.
Monitor activity and make revocation operational
Collect logs that let an operator reconstruct what happened without reading the model’s entire private reasoning. At minimum record the agent identity, parent user or job, tool name and version, resource, action, normalized arguments, policy decision, approval reference, result status and timestamp. Protect logs from alteration and restrict who can view sensitive payloads.
Signals worth alerting on
- A new tool, destination, scope or network path appears during a run.
- Repeated denials, unusual query volume or access outside the task’s normal resource set.
- Attempts to read secrets, enumerate accounts or invoke administrative methods.
- Unexpected data transfers, large exports, external recipients or after-hours activity.
- Tool-description, plugin, model or dependency changes without an owner’s review.
Provide a tested kill switch: disable the agent identity, revoke active tokens, block the integration and preserve the relevant logs. Assign an owner and document the recovery sequence; a revocation control that nobody can operate quickly is not a practical safeguard.

Govern tools, plugins, models and data sources as dependencies
Maintain an inventory of every integration exposed to an agent, its owner, purpose, data classification, permissions, network destinations, version and review date. Reassess the inventory when a tool description, API schema, plugin, model, connector or data source changes. A seemingly harmless update can add a method, alter returned content or change how an agent interprets a request.
Use a change process that includes permission diffing, security review, regression tests and a rollback path. Disable abandoned connectors and remove credentials when a workflow is retired. The goal is least agency as well as least privilege: Microsoft’s Security Blog puts it succinctly, “Apply least agency, not just least privilege.” The statement appears in Securing AI agents: When AI tools move from reading to acting, dated June 30, 2026.
Architecture patterns and their trade-offs
| Pattern | How it works | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read-only analyst | Agent can query an allow-listed dataset and return analysis; no state-changing methods are available. | Search, summarization, triage and reporting. | Cannot complete workflows that require a write. |
| Draft-and-approve | Agent creates a proposed message, patch, order or deployment artifact; a separate actor approves the exact result. | External communication and business changes. | Introduces review latency and requires a clear diff or preview. |
| Brokered action service | Agent calls a narrow service whose gateway validates identity, resource, arguments and policy before invoking the underlying API. | Repeatable operational workflows. | The broker becomes a critical security component that needs its own testing and monitoring. |
| Sandboxed worker | Agent runs with isolated files, process privileges and network egress, often on temporary credentials. | Code execution, document conversion and browser tasks. | Isolation configuration can be complex; it does not replace authorization. |
| Human-operated escalation | Agent prepares evidence and a recommendation; a person performs the high-impact action in an authenticated interface. | Rare, irreversible or highly sensitive operations. | Less automation and a greater chance of manual error if the review is rushed. |
How to evaluate an agent platform or architecture
Feature names differ between products, so evaluate the enforcement mechanism rather than accepting a “safe mode” label. Ask these questions during design and procurement:
| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Permission granularity | Can access be limited by tool, method, resource, field, argument, tenant and environment? |
| External enforcement | Is authorization checked by a trusted executor at call time, independently of model output? |
| Read-only and separate identities | Can research use a read-only scope and a distinct identity from action workflows? |
| Approval controls | Can approval bind to one exact action, data set and destination, and expire or be invalidated? |
| Audit and revocation | Are calls, denials, approvals and results logged, and can operators revoke access immediately? |
| Isolation and egress | Can execution be sandboxed and outbound network destinations allow-listed? |
| Dependency governance | Are tool, plugin, model and data-source changes inventoried, reviewed and tested? |
These axes reflect controls discussed by Microsoft and OWASP, including agentic-risk management and the OWASP security checklist. Verify current capabilities in the documentation for the specific platform; labels and implementation details change.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The system prompt says never to delete anything.”
Why it fails: The connected account may still expose a delete method, and hostile content can attempt to override the instruction.
Fix: Remove the delete capability or deny it in the executor. If deletion is required, expose a separate method with a narrowly scoped resource filter and explicit approval.

“We gave the agent a user’s full account because setup was faster.”
Why it fails: A broad session silently grants unrelated data and administrative actions.
Fix: Create a distinct workload identity, reduce scopes, and mediate authentication outside the model-visible context.
“Approval is a blanket checkbox at the start of the run.”
Why it fails: The agent can later change the recipient, amount, records or operation while the original approval remains nominally valid.
Fix: Show and approve the exact action at the point of execution; invalidate approval when material parameters change.
“We log prompts but not tool calls.”
Why it fails: A prompt does not prove which resource was accessed or which side effect occurred.
Fix: Log identity, tool, resource, normalized arguments, policy result, approver and outcome at the executor boundary.
“The agent only reads, so prompt injection is harmless.”
Why it fails: Read access can expose secrets, enable enumeration or be combined with another connector for exfiltration.
Fix: Limit fields and records, redact sensitive values, restrict egress and monitor unusual volume even for read-only jobs.
Deployment checklist
- Task purpose, owner, required tools and end condition are documented.
- Unused tools, wildcard scopes and administrator rights are removed.
- Agent identity is distinct, identifiable and mapped to an owner.
- Resource, action and argument checks run outside the model for every call.
- Read, draft and act operations use separate methods or scopes.
- Credentials are mediated by the integration and are not embedded in prompts or retrieved content.
- Access expires at task completion or after a defined short duration.
- High-impact actions display exact data and destinations and require specific approval.
- Sandbox, network-egress and data-isolation controls match the task’s threat model.
- Tool calls, denials, approvals and outcomes are auditable.
- Alerts, a tested revocation procedure and an accountable operator are in place.
- Integrations and their updates have owners, review dates, tests and rollback plans.
Limiting an agent is an ongoing access-management discipline: scope the task, enforce every call at a trusted boundary, separate preparation from action, add narrowly defined approval, and continuously observe and revoke what is no longer needed.
