To limit an AI agent on an OPPO phone, do two separate things: remove sensitive permissions in Permission Manager, then stop unwanted startup and background activity in the app and battery controls. One setting does not replace the other. First check your ColorOS version because menu names and locations differ between ColorOS 14 and newer, ColorOS 11–13, and older releases.
Why permission control and background control are separate
Android permissions answer what an app may access: the microphone, camera, location, photos, files, contacts, messages and other data. Background controls answer when the app may run, including whether it can start after boot, remain active while you are not using it, or continue work while another app is on screen.
An AI agent may need several permissions for a single task. For example, an assistant that summarizes a photographed document may need camera and photos access, while one that creates a calendar event may need calendar access. Giving an app permission does not mean it should run continuously, and stopping background execution does not revoke a permission it can use the next time you open it.

Check your ColorOS version before changing settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone (called About device on some releases).
- Record the ColorOS version and Android version shown there.
OPPO documents different paths for ColorOS 14 and newer, ColorOS 11–13, and older software. A carrier build, device model, language, region or staged update can also change labels. If a path below is not present, use the Settings search box for terms such as Permission manager, Auto launch, Special app access or Display over other apps.
Remove unnecessary sensitive permissions
ColorOS 14 and newer
- Open Settings > Security and Privacy.
- Tap Privacy or Privacy control, then Permission manager.
- Select a permission category, such as Microphone or Photos and videos.
- Tap the AI-agent app.
- Choose Allow only while using, Ask every time, or Don’t allow, depending on the choices shown.
ColorOS 11–13
- Open Settings > Privacy.
- Tap Permission or Permission manager.
- Choose a permission category and then the AI-agent app.
- Select the least permissive option that still performs the task.
Some older releases place individual controls under Settings > App management or an app’s Permissions page. The wording can differ, but the process is the same: select the resource, select the app, and replace broad access with a foreground-only, one-time, or denied choice.
Audit each category against a real task
Review the categories listed on your phone rather than accepting a bundled request. Check camera, microphone, location, photos and files, contacts, phone, SMS, calendar, nearby devices and notification-related access. Ask why the agent needs each item and whether that need is continuous.
Recommended Free Tools
- Camera: keep it off unless the agent must capture or interpret a live view. A document assistant can usually work with a photo you select instead of permanent camera access.
- Microphone: use while-you-use or Ask every time for voice commands. Deny it if you use typed prompts only.
- Location: deny it for general writing, summarization or file tasks. Allow foreground use only for a feature that genuinely depends on your current position.
- Photos and files: grant access only when the agent must read or create a particular file. Remove access after a one-off job if the system offers that control.
- Contacts, phone and SMS: treat these as high-impact permissions. An agent that drafts text does not automatically need permission to read your address book or send messages.
- Calendar: allow it only for scheduling features; otherwise deny it.
- Nearby devices: retain it only when the agent must communicate with a specific accessory or local device.
- Notifications: decide whether alerts are essential. Turning this off can stop proactive reminders even when other permissions remain enabled.
Denying a permission that a feature requires can make that feature fail. That is expected: reopen the Permission manager, grant the single required item temporarily, complete the task, and then reassess it.
Choose the right permission level
| Setting | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Don’t allow | The agent has no legitimate need for the resource. | The related feature cannot use that resource until you change the setting. |
| Ask every time | The need is occasional or the data is especially sensitive. | You receive a prompt for each access attempt, which can interrupt automated tasks. |
| Allow only while using | The feature works while its screen or an active foreground service is in use. | Background or proactive functions may stop. |
| Always allow or unrestricted access | Only when a clearly understood feature requires continuous access. | It offers the greatest convenience but the widest exposure and potential battery use. |
Permission options are not identical for every category or ColorOS release. Use the most restrictive choice actually offered for that resource, and do not infer that a permission is harmless merely because the app is an AI assistant.

Stop automatic startup and background execution
Turn off Auto launch
- Open Settings > Apps > Auto launch when that menu is available.
- Find the AI-agent app.
- Turn its switch off.
With auto-launch disabled, the app should not start itself after boot or in response to background triggers that ColorOS manages through this control. You can still open it manually. Disable this setting unless you need proactive notifications, scheduled actions or another function that must begin without your opening the app.
Use Phone Manager on releases that provide it
Some phones expose the same control in Phone Manager > Privacy Permissions > Startup Manager or Auto-launch. A Blocking Records page may show when startup or background activity was prevented. OPPO notes that the Phone Manager option is not present on every release, so its absence does not indicate that auto-launch is permanently enabled; check the Apps settings instead.
Restrict background battery use
- Open Settings > Apps and select the agent.
- Open Battery, Power consumption or a similarly named item.
- Choose the restrictive background option, such as optimized or restricted use, when continuous operation is unnecessary.
Exact choices vary. A restrictive mode can delay notifications, stop background synchronization and interrupt long-running tasks. If the agent must deliver time-sensitive alerts, leave the required notification permission enabled and use a less restrictive battery setting only for that app. This is a deliberate convenience-versus-control decision, not a reason to grant every permission permanently.
What ColorOS 17’s memory claim means
OPPO says the ColorOS 17 Laminar Flow Engine can keep over 25% more apps running in the background during multitasking than ColorOS 16. That figure is an OPPO laboratory claim, not a guaranteed battery result for every phone or workload. More apps retained in memory does not remove your ability to restrict an individual agent through Auto launch and battery controls.
Review Special app access
Disable overlays unless the agent truly needs them
- Open Settings > Apps > Special app access.
- Tap Display over other apps.
- Select the AI-agent app.
- Turn off permission to display over other apps unless an overlay is an intentional part of the feature.
An overlay lets an app place controls or content above other screens. That can be useful for a floating assistant, but it also increases the impact of a compromised or overreaching app. Re-enable it only when you understand why the agent needs to appear over other applications.

Inspect the other special-access entries
The Special app access page can contain additional high-impact controls, and the list differs by ColorOS version. Review entries such as Accessibility, Notification access, Usage access, Unrestricted battery use and Install unknown apps if they appear. Grant each only when the agent’s documented function requires it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Accessibility: can allow broad interaction with the screen and controls. Do not enable it merely to make an assistant feel more autonomous.
- Notification access: can expose notifications from other applications. Disable it when cross-app reading is not part of the task.
- Usage access: can reveal app-usage information. Remove it if the agent does not need activity statistics.
- Unrestricted battery use: can bypass normal power limits. Reserve it for a feature that demonstrably fails without continuous execution.
- Install unknown apps: leave it off unless there is a specific, trusted installation workflow; an AI agent normally should not need it.
Use quick microphone and camera controls
ColorOS 12 introduced a Privacy Dashboard that summarizes permission use. It also provides microphone and camera switches in the control center. Turn either sensor off when you need an immediate block for all apps, then turn it back on only when you are ready to use a camera- or voice-dependent feature.
These switches are a quick safeguard, not a replacement for per-app settings. After restoring a sensor, return to Permission manager and confirm that the AI agent still has the intended permission level. A global sensor switch can prevent legitimate apps from working while leaving the underlying app permission unchanged.
ColorOS 17 Agent Mode: check what the agent actually did
OPPO’s ColorOS 17 announcement describes AI Mind Pilot Agent Mode as able to work directly with photos and files stored on the device, search across multiple sources, use tools and coordinate multiple steps from one request. Those capabilities make least-privilege settings important: an agent that can handle files may be able to perform a broader workflow than a simple chat screen suggests.
ColorOS 17 also introduces a Transparency Report that shows which AI services were used, when they were accessed and what operations were performed. After testing an agent, open that report and compare the recorded activity with the task you requested. If it shows access that was not necessary, return to Permission manager and Special app access, remove the corresponding permission, and test again.

Availability of Agent Mode and the Transparency Report depends on the device, region, software build, cloud capability and rollout. An OPPO account or internet connection may also be required. If the feature is not shown, do not assume that your phone has the same controls as a ColorOS 17 demonstration device.
How OPPO describes its agent-security controls
OPPO’s Mobile Agent Security Technology White Paper describes behavior grading for more than 200 sensitive operations, automatic extraction and display of “permission request–behavior intent” privacy labels, agent API-call tracing and warnings for risky behavior. The paper presents a goal of connecting permissions, behavior and data in one controllable chain.
These are descriptions of OPPO’s security framework, not a promise that every shipping phone exposes every control. Your practical protection still comes from checking the permissions, startup switches, battery policy, overlays and special access shown on your own device.
Choose settings by the behavior you need
| Your goal | Permissions | Background and special access | Likely effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use the agent only for typed, foreground questions | Deny microphone, camera, location, contacts and files unless a task needs them. | Disable Auto launch; use a restrictive battery mode; disable overlays. | Strongest privacy and lower background activity, with no proactive alerts. |
| Occasionally analyze a photo or document | Use Ask every time or foreground-only photos/files access; deny camera when selecting existing images. | Keep Auto launch off; avoid unrestricted battery use. | You approve each file-related action without keeping the agent active. |
| Receive reminders or scheduled results | Allow only the categories required for the reminder feature; keep unrelated data denied. | Allow notifications; test optimized battery settings before considering a less restrictive policy. | Better notification reliability, with more background activity than a fully restricted setup. |
| Use a floating assistant over other apps | Grant only the task-specific permissions. | Enable Display over other apps only while needed; disable it afterward and keep Auto launch off if possible. | Overlay convenience with greater screen-interaction exposure. |
| Let the agent coordinate multi-step file operations | Grant photos/files temporarily and review the Transparency Report afterward. | Keep unrelated special access off; use background restrictions unless the workflow must continue unattended. | Powerful automation with a larger consequence if the request or agent behavior is misunderstood. |
Troubleshoot common results
The agent still runs after Auto launch is off
- Check the app’s Battery or Power consumption page and select a restrictive background policy.
- Look for an active foreground service or scheduled feature inside the app itself.
- Review Notification access, Accessibility, Usage access and Unrestricted battery use under Special app access.
- Restart the phone, then check whether the app starts without being opened.
A voice, camera or file feature stopped working
- Open Permission manager and select the failed category.
- Temporarily grant foreground-only or Ask every time access.
- Use the feature once and observe whether it succeeds.
- Return to the restrictive setting when the task is complete.
If a feature still fails, check whether the app requires an account, an internet connection or a regional rollout. Permission changes cannot enable a capability that is unavailable on your model or software build.

Notifications arrive late or not at all
Confirm that notifications are allowed, Auto launch is enabled only if the feature needs it, and the battery policy is not aggressively restricting the app. If timely alerts are less important than limiting background activity, accept delayed or absent notifications rather than granting unrestricted operation.

Maintenance checklist
Repeat this review after a major ColorOS update, after installing a new AI agent, and whenever the agent gains a new feature.
- Confirm the ColorOS version and note any changed menu labels.
- Remove camera, microphone, location, contacts, phone, SMS, calendar and file permissions that the current tasks do not require.
- Use Ask every time for occasional sensitive access.
- Turn off Auto launch unless proactive operation is intentional.
- Apply a restrictive battery policy when continuous execution is unnecessary.
- Disable Display over other apps and other special access that the agent does not clearly need.
- Check the Privacy Dashboard and, on supported ColorOS 17 devices, the Transparency Report.
- Test one essential workflow after each change so you know exactly which restriction affects it.
What to expect from a least-privilege setup
A tightly restricted agent will usually work when you open it and approve a specific action, but it may not monitor sensors, read new notifications, run after reboot, maintain a long task while you use another app, or deliver proactive alerts. That is the intended trade-off: fewer opportunities for unnecessary access in exchange for less automation and convenience.
