Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Enshrouded servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The fastest reliable way to level up in Enshrouded is to combine XP sources during the same trip: push a main or survivor quest, uncover every undiscovered location on the route, mine useful nodes, and clear a nearby enemy-dense site with creatures close to your level. Use Experience Scrolls whenever you have them. If you administer the world, raising the combat, mining, and quest/exploration XP multipliers can accelerate progress from 0.25× up to 2×.
How XP and character levels work
Enshrouded awards ordinary character XP from several systems rather than from combat alone. Defeating enemies, completing quests, discovering locations, finishing item sets, mining, and using Experience Scrolls can all move the same character-level bar forward. The practical implication is important: a route that combines activities usually beats standing in one place and repeatedly killing weak enemies.

Every character level grants two skill points. Those points are separate from the skill points awarded by Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells, so a player who wants a complete build should pursue both level XP and these world objectives.
| XP source | What you do | Best use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combat | Defeat creatures, scavengers, and other enemies | Dense camps and Shroud areas with enemies near your level | Reward depends on the creature’s multiplier and the level difference; the adjustment is bounded by database floor and ceiling limits. |
| Quests | Complete main, survivor, and other XP-awarding quests | Early progression and unlocking stations, gear, and new objectives | The mechanics database records 134 XP-giving quests totaling 33,800 XP; totals are version-sensitive. |
| Discoveries | Reveal map locations and points of interest | Travel between objectives instead of fast-traveling past unexplored areas | The mechanics database lists 531 discovery entries totaling 97,300 XP; this is the largest listed non-combat pool. |
| Mining | Extract ore and other resource nodes | Gathering materials along a quest or exploration route | Mining XP has its own server multiplier. |
| Item sets | Complete qualifying equipment or collectible sets | Turn natural looting and exploration into additional progression | Set rewards are recorded separately from quest and discovery XP. |
| Experience Scrolls | Use a scroll from your inventory | Apply stored XP when you are ready to push a level threshold | Scrolls are a direct XP award, not a replacement for skill-point objectives. |
The fastest general method: stack activities on one route
Think in terms of XP per minute, not the largest number attached to a single kill. A good outing has several overlapping goals:

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose a current quest objective. Main and survivor quests provide direct XP and unlock the crafting stations, recipes, gear access, and areas that make later routes faster.
- Plot a path through unexplored map markers. Every undiscovered location you reveal can award discovery XP. Check the map before leaving and avoid sprinting past nearby question marks or unnamed points of interest.
- Collect resources that are already on the path. Mine exposed nodes and gather materials you will need for repairs, crafting, and upgrades. A detour that adds several minutes for one low-value node is usually worse than mining a cluster you pass naturally.
- Clear one appropriately leveled dense site. A bandit camp, Elixir Well area, or compact Shroud location can add many combat rewards without a long trek between targets.
- Use an Experience Scroll at a useful moment. Keep scrolls for a session in which you are already completing quests and discoveries, unless you simply need an immediate level for equipment or a skill-point breakpoint.
This route design avoids the two biggest time losses: traveling without earning anything and fighting enemies whose level makes their rewards poor for your character.
Early-game leveling route
1. Follow the main quest and survivor quests
In the opening hours, quests are more valuable than an isolated combat farm because they provide XP while unlocking the tools that expand every later activity. Complete the objectives that introduce survivors and their crafting stations rather than abandoning them to hunt random enemies. The additional stations, recipes, and gear access reduce the time needed to prepare for the next zone.
The official wiki uses the “Making A Home” quest as an example of a direct reward: it grants 150 XP. The quest also introduces the relationship between base Comfort and the Rested state. Treat that comfort setup as progression infrastructure, not as a reason to stop questing; its value is the stronger preparation it gives you for subsequent travel and fights.
2. Turn every journey into an exploration loop
When the quest marker is several minutes away, open the map and identify undiscovered locations along the route. Reveal towers, ruins, shrines, camps, and other points of interest as you pass them. The discovery pool is unusually large: the current mechanics database lists 531 entries and 97,300 XP in total. You do not need to clear every location immediately; revealing it can be enough for the discovery award, while a dangerous site can wait until your gear catches up.
3. Mine only what fits the route
Mining does award XP, so early resource gathering is not purely a crafting chore. Prioritize visible clusters and nodes near your objective. Pick up ore you need for the next station, weapon, armor, or upgrade, but do not spend several minutes circling the wilderness for a single deposit when a quest, discovery, or camp is nearby.
4. Fight enemies that are close to your level
Early random enemies are useful when they are already between you and the next objective. They are a poor primary farm when they are far below your level or scattered across a large area. The reward model uses a base enemy value and a level-difference adjustment, so an enemy-dense location with suitable levels gives more XP for the same travel time.

5. Use the first levels to open a complete build
Each level supplies two skill points. Spend them on a coherent path that improves the weapon type, survivability, or mobility you are actually using; a scattered early build can make the next quest zone slower and indirectly reduce XP per minute. Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells are additional skill-point sources, discussed below, so do not treat ordinary level XP as the only measure of progress.
Mid-game route: combine a quest, discoveries, mining, and a camp
Once you can travel farther and survive a few enemy groups, plan a circuit rather than a straight line. The strongest repeatable pattern is:
- Accept or select a quest in the region you intend to cross.
- Mark two or more undiscovered locations between your base and the objective.
- Identify a mining cluster on the same path.
- Finish at an enemy-dense camp, Shroud area, or Elixir Well where the enemies are close to your level.
- Return with quest progress, newly revealed map entries, ore, loot, and combat XP instead of making separate trips for each category.
This approach is especially effective when a quest destination sits near a landmark or camp. You can reveal the location, mine while approaching, complete the objective, and clear the nearby enemies in one preparation window. If the camp is much higher level than you, leave it marked and return later; repeated deaths erase the travel-time advantage that made the route attractive.
Combat XP farming: what to kill and why
Enemy rewards are not a flat number
The current mechanics database reports a base enemy reward of 50 XP. Each creature also has its own multiplier, and the player’s level relative to the enemy changes the reward by 10 percent for every level of difference. The database applies floor and ceiling limits, so the adjustment cannot grow without bound. Because both the creature multiplier and level gap matter, “the enemy that gives the most XP” is not a universal answer.

In practice, select targets that are near your level and grouped tightly enough that you can move from one fight to the next without long downtime. A slightly lower individual reward can be better when enemies are close together, easy to pull safely, and located near a fast travel point or your current quest.
Best locations for a repeatable combat loop
Enemy-heavy Elixir Wells and bandit camps are practical choices because they concentrate targets and often give you a clear circuit. Compact Shroud areas can work in the same way if you have the resistance, healing, and equipment to remain there safely. Clear the site, collect the loot, and reset or leave according to the world’s normal respawn behavior; do not assume every location resets instantly.

When a combat farm is a bad farm
- Enemies are far below your level: the level adjustment can make each kill inefficient.
- Targets are spread out: running between single enemies lowers XP per minute even when their listed reward looks good.
- The route is above your gear: deaths, repairs, and corpse runs consume the time the farm was meant to save.
- A quest or discovery is nearby: completing both during the same trip generally produces more total progress than ignoring them for a narrow kill loop.
Quests versus killing enemies
Neither activity wins in every phase. Quests are usually the best foundation early because they combine XP with unlocks. Combat becomes more attractive when you have access to dense, appropriately leveled locations and can clear them repeatedly without preparation delays.
| Method | XP-per-minute outlook | Travel time | Risk and gear needs | Extra progress | Repeatability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main and survivor quests | Strong while objectives are available; direct rewards vary | Usually moderate, with travel that can also reveal discoveries | Rises with the quest zone; use current gear and consumables | Unlocks stations, recipes, gear access, and new areas | Limited by the remaining quest list |
| Dense enemy camp | Strong when enemies are near your level and kills are continuous | Low inside the camp; route quality depends on access | Combat-focused; failure can erase the time advantage | Loot, equipment upgrades, and possible objective progress | Good when the site can be revisited or reset |
| Exploration discoveries | Very strong as a cumulative pool, especially during normal travel | Low extra time if locations are on your route | Some sites are safe to reveal; others require later combat | Map knowledge and access to future routes | Finite per world, but exceptionally efficient while unexplored |
| Mining | Moderate as a stand-alone activity; efficient when nodes are en route | Low when clusters are nearby, high when hunted individually | Usually low combat risk, but wilderness travel still matters | Crafting materials and mining XP | Repeatable as resources return according to world rules |
| Experience Scrolls | Immediate award with no combat or travel | None | No combat requirement | Can push a level threshold at a chosen time | Limited by the scrolls you obtain |
Use quests and exploration to build a character and unlock the map, then add combat circuits when they offer a clear time advantage. Mining and scrolls fill the gaps rather than replacing the main route.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does mining give XP?
Yes. Mining is an ordinary XP source in the current mechanics data, and the official server settings provide a separate mining XP multiplier. The efficient method is to mine along routes you already need to travel.
Mining checklist
- Mine clusters near quest objectives, fast-travel points, and discovered landmarks.
- Prioritize materials required for the next upgrade so the trip improves both level and equipment.
- Carry enough inventory space to avoid returning early.
- Do not bypass a dangerous objective solely for one node; the combat and travel risk can overwhelm the mining reward.
- If administering a world, adjust mining XP independently rather than changing every XP category.
Exploration and item-set XP
Exploration is often the highest-return activity that players accidentally skip. The mechanics database records 97,300 XP across 531 discovery entries, more than the listed 33,800 XP across 134 quests. Those totals describe the database’s current entries and can change with updates, but they show why uncovering the map while traveling is so powerful.
Reveal nearby points of interest even when you are not ready to clear them. Mark hazardous locations, return with better gear, and avoid converting a discovery run into a death-and-repair loop. Item-set rewards work similarly: keep equipment that contributes to a set when storage allows, and let normal looting and exploration complete sets instead of making a long detour for one missing piece.
Experience Scrolls: when to spend them
Experience Scrolls award character XP directly. Use one when it will produce a practical result, such as reaching the next level before a difficult quest, meeting an equipment requirement, or converting a nearly complete bar into two skill points. If you are already on a route with several quest completions and discoveries, using the scroll during that session can simplify your next build decision.

Scrolls do not award the skill points attached specifically to Shroud Roots or Elixir Wells, and they do not reveal map locations or unlock survivor stations. They are a shortcut across the character-level bar, not a substitute for world progression.
Shroud Roots, Elixir Wells, and skill points
Ordinary level XP and world-objective skill points are separate systems. The official wiki states that each character level grants two skill points, while a Shroud Root grants one and an Elixir Well grants three. A player who farms enemies but ignores these objectives can have a lower-quality build than a player of the same level who clears them.
The current Wake of Water information lists the level cap as 45. An independent mechanics database records 44 level-ups for 88 level-derived skill points, plus points from 19 Elixir Wells and 60 Shroud Roots. Treat those counts as version-sensitive database data rather than permanent rules; major updates can add, remove, or rebalance objectives.

- Reveal a Root or Well while completing a quest or exploring a new region.
- Clear it immediately if its enemies are within your ability and the travel route remains efficient.
- Mark it for later when the area is substantially above your level.
- Return with suitable gear, because the skill-point reward remains valuable even after ordinary leveling slows.
Changing XP rates on a server
If you own or administer the world, the official Server Gameplay Settings documentation exposes separate multipliers for combat XP, mining XP, and quest/exploration XP. Each documented multiplier can be set from 0.25× through 2×.
What each multiplier changes
| Setting | Raises or lowers | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Combat XP multiplier | XP from defeating enemies | Speed up combat-focused worlds or slow combat progression for a challenge |
| Mining XP multiplier | XP from mining | Make resource expeditions contribute more or less to leveling |
| Quest/exploration XP multiplier | Quest rewards and discovery-related XP | Favor story and map completion without changing combat rewards |
Practical setup guidance
- Open the world’s server gameplay settings as an administrator.
- Locate the separate combat, mining, and quest/exploration XP fields.
- Choose a value between 0.25× and 2× for each category; you can tune categories independently.
- Save the settings and restart or reload the world if the host requires it.
- Test one known activity, such as a quest completion or a mining node, before planning a long session around the new rate.
These settings affect the world for its players, so agree on the intended progression speed before changing them in a shared save. A 2× quest/exploration setting will not make combat kills award 2× XP unless the combat multiplier is also changed.
Why old leveling guides can be wrong
Keen Games’ Forging the Path update redesigned the XP requirements for the first five level-ups. Any guide written before that update can therefore misstate the early-game pace, the number of activities needed for a level, or the point at which a player should leave the starting region. Use current in-game progress and current server settings rather than relying on an old level-by-level table.

The level cap and skill-point totals are also version-sensitive. The Wake of Water wiki entry lists a level cap of 45, while the mechanics database’s counts for level-ups, Roots, and Wells reflect its current database state. Recheck those values after major patches before planning a character around a fixed total.

Common leveling mistakes and fixes
Grinding weak random enemies
Symptom: many kills produce little visible progress. Fix: move to a dense location with enemies near your level, or return to the quest-and-discovery route where each fight is attached to another reward.
Fast-traveling past undiscovered locations
Symptom: the character level rises slowly despite frequent travel. Fix: reveal nearby map entries on foot when the detour is short; discoveries form the largest listed non-combat pool.
Mining in isolated areas
Symptom: a resource run takes longer than the XP it produces. Fix: mine clusters along quest routes and stop chasing single nodes.
Ignoring survivor quests
Symptom: equipment and crafting access lag behind the recommended zone. Fix: complete survivor objectives because their unlocks improve later XP efficiency, not just the immediate reward.
Entering a high-level camp too early
Symptom: deaths and repairs consume the session. Fix: mark the location, improve gear through quests and crafting, and return when the enemies are closer to your level.
Confusing character levels with world skill points
Symptom: a high-level character still lacks key abilities. Fix: route through Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells; they award one and three skill points respectively, independent of ordinary XP.
A practical session plan
For a normal play session, begin at your base with a selected quest, adequate food and healing, enough inventory space, and a route that crosses unexplored map entries. Travel toward the objective while revealing locations and mining useful clusters. Complete the quest, then clear one nearby camp or Shroud site if the enemies are appropriate. Use a scroll if it reaches a meaningful level threshold, and record any Root or Well you postponed. On the next outing, return to those marked objectives while continuing the same quest-and-discovery loop.
This plan remains effective as the character grows because it does not depend on one specific enemy, exploit, or outdated XP table. It simply keeps travel, exploration, gathering, quests, combat, and skill-point objectives moving together—the combination that produces the most progress for the time spent.
