The quickest reliable way to raise combat skills in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is to finish Combat Training with Tomcat, learn consistent Master Strikes, then repeat survivable fights with the exact weapon class you want to improve. Sword attacks advance Sword, clubs, maces, axes and war hammers advance Heavy Weapons, and fighting in general advances Warfare while also contributing to broader attributes such as Strength, Agility and Vitality.
There is no verified universal “XP per minute” winner. Training bouts are safer and easier to repeat; field encounters provide variety and practical combat experience but carry greater risk. The best routine combines both: use Tomcat to build technique, specialize in one weapon class, take controlled real fights, retreat before a death spiral, and spend perks that reduce stamina and durability costs or improve the situations you deliberately choose.
How combat skill progression works
Combat skills in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 improve through use rather than through a separate menu where you can simply buy levels. The action you perform determines the proficiency that receives experience. Your weapon therefore matters every time you swing.
- Swords: sword attacks and sword practice feed the Sword skill.
- Heavy Weapons: clubs, maces, axes and war hammers feed Heavy Weapons.
- Warfare: regular combat contributes to the broad combat skill, with individual weapon and unarmed skills feeding into your overall fighting development.
- Strength, Agility and Vitality: combat can contribute to these wider attributes, although the exact gain depends on the activity and the game’s perk systems.
This makes the central rule simple: perform the action tied to the skill you want. Switching between a sword and a mace may make you a more versatile fighter, but it divides the weapon-specific practice that would otherwise push one proficiency toward its next perk.

The fastest repeatable progression loop
1. Complete Combat Training with Tomcat
Do not skip the early combat-training sequence. Tomcat’s practice fights give you low-consequence repetitions of the fundamentals that determine whether later fights produce useful practice or merely consume health and equipment.
Use the sessions to work on four habits:
- Keep a workable distance instead of standing chest-to-chest with every opponent.
- Watch the opponent’s body and weapon, not only your own attack animation.
- Use blocks and directional attacks deliberately so you can recognize where an opening comes from.
- Try feints and changes of attack direction without rushing the follow-up.
Training is especially valuable before you begin farming ordinary encounters. A player who can control spacing and stamina gets more actions per fight and spends less time recovering from failed trades.
2. Isolate Master Strike practice
Master Strike should be your first reliable damage and defense tool. When the green timing indicator appears, attack from the opposite direction of the incoming attack. The move is timing-sensitive: pressing too early, too late or in the same direction will not produce the intended counter.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Tomcat’s bouts to practice the timing until you can recognize the window without staring at the interface. Start by defending rather than trying to chain attacks. Once the counter becomes consistent, add a single follow-up strike and then reset your distance. This approach creates combat actions while limiting the reckless hit trading that drains health, stamina and weapon durability.
3. Specialize before you diversify
Choose the weapon class whose perks you want first and keep it equipped during most practice and field fights. A sword raises Sword; a club, mace, axe or war hammer raises Heavy Weapons. A sword fight will not substitute for Heavy Weapons practice, and a mace fight will not accelerate Sword.
Specialization is the fastest route to a particular weapon’s early perks. You can broaden your repertoire later, once the first class has the techniques or attributes your build needs. If your immediate goal is a higher Warfare level rather than a specific weapon perk, consistent combat matters more than the exact weapon, but changing weapons still slows the individual proficiencies.
4. Take controlled real fights
Use ordinary bandit or similar encounters that you can realistically survive. The aim is not to seek the largest group on the map; it is to create repeated opportunities to attack, defend and counter without losing the entire attempt to one mistake.

- Enter with enough health and stamina to survive an unexpected opening exchange.
- Keep the weapon class you are training in your hands.
- Look for one opponent you can read and control before committing to a group.
- Use Master Strikes and measured attacks rather than trading blows until both stamina bars are empty.
- Disengage when health or stamina falls to a dangerous level. A retreat preserves the progress already earned and gives you another fight later.
Guides support training and ordinary combat as practical ways to improve, but they do not establish a measured XP-per-minute benchmark. Treat claims that one encounter or exploit is universally fastest with caution unless they include controlled testing for your version and conditions.
5. Spend perks at useful breakpoints
Perks should support the way you actually fight. Early choices that reduce the stamina or durability cost of blocking make defensive practice cheaper and more repeatable. Feint improves a deliberate attack pattern once you understand direction changes. Weapon-specific improvements are strongest when you have committed to that class. Against All Odds is useful for a build that intentionally fights several enemies, because it can provide a +2 Strength, Agility and Warfare bonus while outnumbered.
Do not select an outnumbered perk merely to justify attacking groups before you can control them. The bonus is most valuable when group fights are a planned part of your routine, not when every encounter becomes a gamble.
Skill-by-skill leveling plans
| Skill or attribute | Actions that advance it | Fast, safe emphasis | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sword | Use swords in Tomcat’s training and in field combat. | Keep a sword equipped for nearly every repetition until the desired sword perks are reached. | Using another weapon will not provide equivalent Sword practice. |
| Heavy Weapons | Use clubs, maces, axes and war hammers. | Choose one heavy-weapon type you can handle and repeat controlled fights with it. | Sword fights do not level Heavy Weapons. |
| Warfare | Fight consistently; progress is associated with overall combat and individual weapon or unarmed skills. | Combine frequent practice with survivable field encounters. Any weapon can contribute, while specialization determines which weapon skill rises. | There is no published universal encounter or exploit that guarantees the best rate. |
| Strength | Combat activity can contribute to this broader attribute. | Fight regularly and use perks that match your intended build. | A single activity has not been established here as a quantified fastest method. |
| Agility | Combat activity can contribute to Agility. | Continue normal fighting while using the weapon class associated with your build. | Do not treat an unmeasured training claim as a guaranteed rate. |
| Vitality | Combat can contribute to Vitality. | Stay active in fights you can survive rather than repeatedly dying in high-risk encounters. | The available guidance does not give a verified XP-per-minute figure. |
| Archery/Marksmanship | Range practice is presented as a practical training option. | Use an archery range when available and treat it as repetition for your ranged build. | No primary, measured fastest method has been established for this skill. |
Master Strikes: the technique that makes practice efficient
Read the incoming direction
Master Strike timing is based on the opponent’s attack direction and the green indicator. Wait for the timing window, then attack from the opposite direction. The counter is not a generic “press block whenever an enemy swings” action; direction and timing both matter.

- Stationary observation: in a Tomcat bout, let the opponent initiate while you watch the indicator and the attack direction.
- Single-counter repetition: attempt only the Master Strike. Do not add a combo until the timing is repeatable.
- Counter and reset: after a successful strike, create distance and recover stamina instead of forcing another exchange.
- Counter under movement: practice while changing range, because field enemies do not stand in a fixed training position.
- Counter in a real fight: use the move against an ordinary opponent, then disengage if the situation becomes crowded or your stamina collapses.
This progression is safer than learning through aggressive combinations alone. Combos can deal damage, but missed inputs and stamina depletion expose you to hits. Master Strikes give you a repeatable response to incoming attacks and let you accumulate useful combat actions with less unnecessary damage taken.
Training bouts versus field encounters
| Option | Advantages | Costs and risks | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomcat’s training bouts | Low-consequence repetitions; controlled opportunity to learn spacing, blocks, feints, attack directions and Master Strikes. | Less enemy variety and less pressure than a real ambush or group fight. | Early technique building, timing drills and testing a new weapon class. |
| Single-enemy or small ordinary encounters | Real movement, stamina pressure and openings; safer to control than a large group. | Health, armor and equipment can be lost if you misjudge the fight. | Turning learned technique into practical Sword, Heavy Weapons and Warfare progress. |
| Group fights | More combat activity and an opportunity to use outnumbered perks such as Against All Odds. | Reduced control, attacks from multiple directions and a much higher chance of losing stamina or being hit from behind. | Later progression, when you can reliably disengage and read several threats. |
There is no contradiction between “training is safest” and “field fights are useful.” They solve different problems. Training lets you produce clean repetitions; field combat tests whether the skill survives movement, uneven terrain and multiple decisions. Alternate them instead of replacing one with the other.
Choosing between specialization and weapon switching
Choose specialization when you want a weapon perk quickly
Keep the same class equipped through Tomcat’s sessions and ordinary encounters. This concentrates use-based progression in Sword or Heavy Weapons and reaches that class’s perks sooner. It also makes your muscle memory more consistent: the timing, reach and attack behavior you learn belong to the weapon you are actually carrying.

- Customize Heinrich's appearance, skills and equipment to your liking

Switch weapons when breadth is the goal
Switching is reasonable if you want broad Warfare growth, need to test a build, or expect a situation where a different weapon is tactically preferable. The trade-off is speed toward any one weapon’s proficiency. Every fight spent with another class is a fight that does not advance the class you were previously specializing in.
Use a staged plan
- Pick one primary class for the early game and use it for Tomcat and most field fights.
- Unlock or improve the perks that make your preferred defensive and offensive rhythm sustainable.
- Once the class meets your immediate requirements, introduce a second weapon for broader Warfare and situational flexibility.
- Return to the primary class whenever a specific weapon perk or attribute threshold is the next objective.
How to handle Warfare, attributes and outnumbered fights
Warfare reflects the fact that you are fighting, not merely the weapon in your hand. Improving individual weapon or unarmed skills contributes to that broader combat development. If Warfare is your priority, maintain a steady schedule of real fights and training rather than waiting for one perfect weapon or encounter.
Strength, Agility and Vitality can also benefit from combat activity, but their exact gains depend on the activity and perk systems. Use those attributes as reasons to keep fighting consistently, not as evidence that one unverified farm is optimal.
Outnumbered perks change the decision calculus only after you can control a group. Against All Odds can add +2 Strength, Agility and Warfare when you are outnumbered. That is a meaningful incentive for a build designed around multi-enemy combat, but it does not remove the underlying risks: attacks arrive from several directions, stamina is consumed by repeated defense, and a single mistimed response can end the encounter.
- Start with one enemy or a small, readable group.
- Keep moving so opponents do not surround you.
- Use Master Strikes against the attacker you can see and identify.
- Leave before low stamina turns a successful fight into a sequence of forced hits.
- Use the perk as a bonus to a controlled strategy, not as permission to take every numerical disadvantage.
Archery and Marksmanship: what is and is not established
Archery-range practice is a practical suggestion for improving Marksmanship, and a range provides a predictable place to repeat shots. However, no primary, measured fastest method has been established for this skill in the available guidance. Do not present range practice as a quantified optimum or assume that an exploit transfers from melee progression.
If you are building a ranged character, use the range to work on consistency, then apply those shots in ordinary situations where you can remain safe. Keep expectations modest: the evidence supports practice as a useful routine, not a guaranteed rate or a specific number of shots per level.
A practical routine for a new character
First session: technique before farming
- Complete the Combat Training sequence with Tomcat.
- Use the practice fights to learn distance, blocks, feints and attack directions.
- Spend a dedicated period attempting only Master Strikes from the green indicator and opposite direction.
- Choose Sword or Heavy Weapons as the first specialization.
After training: controlled progression
- Take the chosen weapon into an ordinary encounter you can survive.
- Open defensively, look for Master Strike opportunities and avoid stamina-draining trades.
- Finish the fight with the same weapon class so the intended proficiency receives the use-based progress.
- Return to training when you need low-risk repetitions or when a new technique is failing in the field.
- Spend perks on stamina and durability efficiency, Feint, or the weapon-specific improvement that supports your chosen pattern.
When your confidence improves: add variety deliberately
Introduce larger groups or a second weapon only when you can explain the reason. A second weapon may broaden Warfare and provide a tactical answer to a particular opponent, while a group fight may make an outnumbered perk worthwhile. If you cannot state the benefit, remain with the safer, more concentrated routine.
Common mistakes that slow progression
Grinding a weapon you are not trying to level
Using a sword while expecting Heavy Weapons progress is a category error. Check the weapon in your hands before every practice session and field fight.
Skipping the Master Strike foundation
Repeatedly attacking without learning the counter window creates more damage taken, more stamina problems and more interrupted fights. The early Tomcat sequence is not wasted time; it is the low-risk place to build the response that makes later fights sustainable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Confusing risk with speed
A large group may produce many combat actions if you survive, but dying, retreating late or losing equipment can erase the practical value of the attempt. Until your control is reliable, a smaller encounter gives a better repeatable routine.
Changing weapons every fight
Variety can be enjoyable and can support broad Warfare development, but it is slower for a specific Sword or Heavy Weapons target. Switch with a stated objective, not out of habit.
Believing an unmeasured XP claim
No sourced universal XP-per-minute benchmark establishes one method as best for every player, difficulty, encounter and game version. Treat any exact “fastest farm” claim as conditional unless it documents those variables and shows how the result was measured.
How to troubleshoot a stalled skill
The weapon skill is not rising as expected
- Confirm that the current weapon belongs to the intended class.
- Use it for both training and real attacks; blocking alone may not create the same weapon-use activity as striking.
- Complete several survivable encounters rather than judging progress from one short exchange.
Fights end with no stamina
- Reduce the number of consecutive attacks.
- Prioritize Master Strikes and resets over reckless combinations.
- Choose perks that reduce blocking stamina or durability costs when available to your build.
- Disengage earlier; a retreat is part of the progression loop, not a failure.
Master Strikes keep failing
- Return to Tomcat instead of practicing only in dangerous fights.
- Wait for the green timing indicator.
- Attack from the opposite direction of the incoming strike.
- Practice one successful counter at a time before adding movement or a follow-up attack.
Group fights feel impossible
Move back to single enemies or small groups. Against All Odds can improve an outnumbered build, but it cannot replace spacing, stamina management and the ability to identify incoming attacks. Resume larger fights only after you can disengage reliably.
The decision rule to remember
Start with Combat Training and Tomcat, make Master Strikes dependable, then repeat the safest real fights you can win with the weapon class tied to your target skill. Stay specialized when a Sword or Heavy Weapons perk is the goal; switch weapons only for a deliberate Warfare or tactical objective. Use perks to make your defensive rhythm cheaper and your chosen situations more productive. Because no verified XP-per-minute winner is established, consistency, survival and correct weapon selection are more dependable than chasing a supposed universal exploit.
