The fastest sustainable way to gain levels and cash in Phasmophobia is to finish accurate investigations: identify the ghost, complete quick optional objectives, collect the bone, record unique Chronicle media, and leave alive. Money and experience are linked at a one-to-one rate—earning $100 also grants 100 XP—so the best farm is the contract you can complete consistently, not automatically the one with the highest multiplier.
How Phasmophobia XP and money are connected
Kinetic Games explained in Moving Forwards | Development Preview #12 (July 26, 2023): “Experience and money values are now tied, if you earn $100, you’ll also be earning 100xp.” In practical terms, actions that increase your payout also advance your level. There is no separate XP-only activity that bypasses the investigation reward system.
Your contract result is built from several sources:

- Optional objectives: Each completed objective adds reward. Favor objectives that can be completed during normal evidence gathering or with little additional exposure.
- The bone: Finding and collecting the bone adds a reward. Kinetic Games’ progression notes specify that the bone reward was moved outside the contract reward multiplier, so it remains valuable even when a multiplier is changed.
- Chronicle media: Photos, videos and sounds can add money and XP. A first capture of a subject or type is marked Unique; a repeat is a Duplicate and pays less.
- Contract multiplier: Difficulty and custom settings can increase the value of eligible rewards. Chronicle media rewards are included in that multiplier, while the bone reward is treated separately.
Reward values for objectives and tasks were increased in the progression changes, but the available official notes do not provide a permanent table of every objective payout. That means a guide can explain the reward structure accurately without promising a universal dollar total for each contract.

The core money-and-level farming loop
Use this sequence on every investigation. It minimizes wasted setup time while collecting the rewards that scale with your skill.
- Choose a location you can navigate quickly. A small or familiar map can reduce searching time, but no official source establishes one map as permanently fastest for every player. Pick the location where you can find the ghost room, bone and exits reliably.
- Bring tools that support identification and media. Carry the Photo Camera and Video Camera. Add the Sound Recorder once it is unlocked. Bring the evidence equipment required for your chosen difficulty and keep at least one survival item available when hunts are a realistic threat.
- Find the ghost area and gather evidence efficiently. Avoid long detours for a low-probability objective. Every minute spent waiting for a difficult event is a minute in which you could have completed a clean contract and started another one.
- Complete safe objectives while you work. Take objectives that overlap with evidence collection, such as interactions you can trigger without repeatedly entering danger. Skip an objective when its expected reward is lower than the time and hunt risk it adds.
- Collect the bone. Make a deliberate bone check before leaving. Because its reward is outside the multiplier, it is a dependable addition to a successful run.
- Capture unique Chronicle media. Record a new subject or media type whenever practical. Unique entries pay more than duplicates, and the media reward is multiplied by the contract setting.
- Confirm the ghost and leave alive. Survival preserves the value of every other action. A death, wrong identification or forced reset can make a high-multiplier attempt slower than a lower-difficulty completion.
- Spend the result on the next useful unlock. Better equipment and newly available locations and difficulties support faster future contracts. Do not drain your bankroll on optional purchases if replacing lost equipment would prevent your next run.
What to prioritize during one investigation
First priority: correct identification
Evidence and behavior knowledge are the foundation of efficient progression. Leaving with the wrong ghost wastes the time invested in objectives, media and setup. If you are uncertain, use the remaining safe evidence opportunities rather than guessing early. On higher settings, learn to combine fewer clues with behavior tells before attempting a no-evidence style.
Second priority: quick, low-risk objectives
Objectives are direct reward sources, but not every objective has the same time or danger cost. A fast objective that uses equipment already in the room is usually a better hourly choice than an event objective that requires repeated waiting. This is a time-management recommendation: the published progression notes do not provide a universal objective-by-objective time trial.

Both rewards are easy to overlook because they are not required to identify the ghost. Add a bone sweep to your normal exit route. For media, favor new subjects and new media types instead of filling every slot with repeated shots of the same event.
Final priority: extra objectives only while the risk remains acceptable
Once the ghost is identified, ask whether another objective can be completed without a meaningful increase in hunt exposure. If not, leave. The point of a farm is progress per hour, not the largest possible payout from a single contract.

Early-level route: learn while unlocking equipment
Use Amateur or Intermediate while you are still learning evidence, ghost behavior and map layouts. Their lower multiplier is offset by more dependable survival and fewer wrong guesses. Early contracts should teach a repeatable routine:
- Locate the ghost area without exhausting sanity or consumables.
- Complete the evidence process and identify the ghost correctly.
- Take any objective that is naturally available and safe.
- Check for the bone and capture a few new media entries if the required devices are unlocked.
- Leave as soon as the next task would require a long wait or a high-risk hunt.
The progression system is designed to unlock equipment, maps and difficulties as your level rises. Do not treat a difficult event objective as mandatory if it delays the next reliable contract. A clean series of lower-multiplier runs can produce more progress in an hour than repeated failed attempts at a setting you cannot yet control.

Mid-game route: add multiplier-friendly rewards
When Professional difficulty and stronger equipment are available, combine accurate identification with the bone and several unique media captures. This is where the reward structure becomes more efficient: you are earning from the contract result, objectives, bone and media instead of relying on identification alone.
Use familiar maps strategically
A compact or well-known location can shorten travel between the ghost room, objective sites, bone and exit. Familiarity is more important than a claimed “best map.” The official material does not name a universally fastest map, so choose according to your own search time and survival record.

- Can I finish it during the current safe window?
- Will it require another trip into a dangerous area or a deliberate hunt trigger?
- Would a death or reset cost more time and equipment than the objective can return?
If the third answer is yes, bank the completed rewards and leave. A higher multiplier only helps when the run reaches the payout screen.

Higher difficulties and custom settings can offer a larger reward multiplier, but they also reduce the margin for error. Experienced players can reduce evidence, increase restrictions or use other custom changes to raise the multiplier. These are advanced farms, not requirements for beginners.
The official progression and Chronicle announcements document the reward framework, but they do not certify one permanent best custom configuration. Patch changes, ghost knowledge and survival skill all affect the result. Treat a no-evidence or extreme-multiplier setup as a personal optimization project: measure how often you finish, how long each contract takes and how often equipment must be replaced.
When to raise difficulty
- Move up when you can identify common ghosts accurately at your current setting.
- Raise the multiplier only when your completion rate remains high enough to avoid frequent deaths and resets.
- Drop back a tier if you are spending more time recovering equipment or retrying failed contracts than investigating.
Chronicle: how to turn media into extra cash and XP
Chronicle expands the media portion of each investigation. Under the 2025 system, you can take up to five photos, five videos and three sounds per investigation. The first capture of a subject or type is Unique. Capturing the same piece of media again marks it as a Duplicate, which rewards less money and experience.
- Pack all available recording devices. Carry the Photo Camera and Video Camera; add the Sound Recorder after unlocking it.
- Look for a new subject. A new interaction, object or sound is generally more valuable than another recording of something already cataloged as Unique.
- Check the journal classification. The goal is not merely to fill slots. Confirm that the entry is recorded as Unique when possible.
- Use higher-tier devices when the situation is safe. Chronicle adds $1 per Tier 2 camera or recorder item and $2 per Tier 3 item. These are per-item bonuses stated by Kinetic Games for the Chronicle system.
- Stop before media hunting becomes dangerous. A duplicate taken during a risky hunt is a poor trade for a completed contract.
Filling the media pages with Unique items is also part of the requirement for a perfect investigation, alongside the usual perfect-run conditions. Kinetic Games described this change in Happy Holidays – Development Preview #18 (2024). Therefore, Chronicle is both a repeatable reward source and a route toward perfect-investigation goals.

The useful comparison is not multiplier alone. Track reward multiplier, total contract time, survival probability, equipment cost and your own ghost-identification accuracy. A setup that pays twice as much but fails half the time may not improve your hourly progress.
How to choose the best farm for your skill
Use an expected-value approach rather than copying a claimed universal farm. After several runs at one setting, record:
- Average minutes from loading the contract to returning to the lobby.
- How often the ghost identification is correct.
- How often you survive.
- Average contract payout, including objectives, bone and Chronicle media.
- Equipment or consumable replacement cost after failures.
Then compare completed payout per minute, not the headline multiplier. Increase difficulty when the higher setting raises completed rewards without causing enough deaths or resets to erase the gain. Keep the lower setting when it produces a steadier sequence of finished contracts.

Common mistakes that slow progression
Chasing the highest multiplier before you can finish
A theoretical maximum is irrelevant when a run ends in death or a wrong guess. Build accuracy and survival first, then raise the multiplier one step at a time.
Taking every duplicate media capture
Duplicates still provide a reward, but less money and experience than Unique entries. Use spare slots for new subjects rather than repeating a cataloged capture.
Ignoring the bone
The bone is a separate reward and does not depend on the contract multiplier. Add a consistent bone check to your route instead of relying on luck during the final seconds.

Objectives are optional. If an objective requires repeated waiting, dangerous events or a full reset, finish the identification and leave unless the remaining risk is clearly justified.
Prestiging for the wrong reason
Prestige resets your bankroll and equipment. It is a badge, title and loadout-slot decision, not a shortcut to faster cash.
A compact checklist for every profitable run
- Choose a map you can search and escape efficiently.
- Bring evidence equipment plus the Photo Camera and Video Camera; add the Sound Recorder when unlocked.
- Identify the ghost correctly before taking unnecessary risks.
- Complete quick objectives that overlap with normal play.
- Collect the bone.
- Capture Unique media before duplicates.
- Use Tier 2 or Tier 3 recording devices when safe for their Chronicle bonuses.
- Leave alive once the next reward is worth less than its time and hunt risk.
- Raise difficulty only when your completed payout per minute improves.
Bottom line for faster leveling
For most players, the best route is a reliable medium-to-high difficulty contract completed accurately, with quick objectives, the bone and several Unique Chronicle captures. Amateur and Intermediate are efficient while learning; Professional and custom settings become worthwhile when your survival and identification rates remain strong. Because $100 earned equals 100 XP, optimize for completed money per hour rather than the largest multiplier shown on the setup screen.
