You can make a livestream participatory without handing viewers your mouse, keyboard, OBS controls, or desktop. Let viewers provide bounded input—such as a poll vote, chat message, or pre-approved request—then keep the decision and screen change with the broadcaster. Show the poll or result in OBS with a platform overlay or Browser Source, and grant an audience-facing page only the permissions it needs to display information.
This separation matters: audience input is not the same as remote control. A poll tells you what viewers prefer; it does not let them launch applications, type into a chat window, switch scenes, or change files on your computer.
What viewer interaction should mean
Start by defining the action viewers are allowed to take and the action they are not. A safe livestream interaction has a narrow input path, a clear outcome, and a broadcaster-controlled execution step.
- Allowed input: votes, chat messages, reactions, or a request selected from options you publish.
- Host decision: you interpret the result, reject unsuitable requests, and decide when an action happens.
- Host execution: you change the application, OBS scene, game, or document yourself.
- Visible feedback: an overlay shows the poll, accepted request, or result without exposing private controls.
If viewers can move your pointer, type on your computer, open programs, or operate OBS directly, you are running a remote-control or collaboration session—not merely an interactive livestream.

Choose the smallest interaction that solves the problem
Use the least powerful mechanism that gives viewers a meaningful voice. The table below separates input type, execution, and access requirements.

Compare any method by five questions: What can viewers submit? Who executes the result? Does the service require a particular account or organization license? What can viewers see? How quickly can you hide or disable it?
A secure architecture for interactive streams
A reliable setup has four separate layers. Keeping them separate prevents a visual widget from becoming an accidental control surface.

Collect one defined type of input: a poll choice, a chat message, or a request that matches a published option. Tell viewers what their input will do. For example, say whether the winning option determines your next game, chooses between two demonstrations, or is only a feedback tally.
2. Decision layer
You remain the authority. Read the result, apply moderation rules, and decide whether the requested action is appropriate for the stream. A winning vote is not a command to reveal private information, open an untrusted link, or disable a safety setting.
3. Execution layer
Change the screen yourself. If you use automation, constrain it to named, pre-approved actions such as displaying one of three scenes. Do not expose a general-purpose shell, desktop API, OBS control socket, or remote-desktop credential to a public page.
4. Display layer
Show the interaction or its result in the broadcast. OBS describes Browser Source as a web page embedded in a scene; its documentation is available at OBS Browser Source. A viewer should see the poll or confirmation, not the private dashboard used to administer it.

Use a native Twitch poll without sharing control
Twitch’s poll feature lets viewers vote on choices created by a streamer. Twitch documents an optional poll overlay that can display the active poll on the channel stream, and its help page says poll availability is limited to monetized streamers. Check the current account eligibility and labels before planning a show around it.

Set up the poll
- Open Twitch and go to the Creator Dashboard.
- Choose the poll tool or the corresponding audience-interaction control shown for your account.
- Create a short question and a finite list of choices. Avoid options that require viewers to control software directly.
- Set any duration, vote weighting, or channel-point rules offered by the current interface, then publish the poll.
- Explain on stream what the result controls and what remains at your discretion.
- When the poll closes, read the result and perform the selected action yourself.
Display the poll
If you want the active poll visible in the video, follow Twitch’s current overlay instructions and add the resulting page to OBS as a Browser Source. The overlay is a presentation path; viewers still vote through Twitch and do not receive OBS access. Because Twitch changes eligibility and dashboard UI, confirm the setting in your account rather than relying on an old walkthrough.
Show a poll or result in OBS with Browser Source
OBS Browser Source loads a webpage into a scene. You can use a platform poll overlay, an alert page, or a custom result page while keeping the administrative dashboard off-camera.

Add the source
- In OBS, select the scene where the interaction should appear.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Browser or Browser Source, depending on the current OBS label.
- Give the source a recognizable name, such as
Audience poll, and select OK. - Paste the overlay or result URL into the URL field. Keep private tokens and administration links out of the scene and out of public chat.
- Set the width and height to match your canvas, then select OK. Resize or position the source in the preview.
- Toggle the source’s visibility when the interaction starts and ends. Prepare a scene without the widget so you can hide it immediately.
StreamElements documents a comparable overlay workflow: create an overlay, copy its URL, and add it to OBS as a Browser Source. Its instructions are at StreamElements’ overlays and alerts guide. That guide establishes how to display an overlay; it does not mean every overlay provides voting or grants viewers control.
Keep the page’s permissions narrow
OBS documents Browser Source page permissions and the underlying obs-browser component. A page can be configured with access to status information and, at more powerful levels, control functions. An audience-facing widget normally needs only to render its page and perhaps read limited status.
- Use read-only or status access when that is sufficient for the widget.
- Do not grant control permissions merely because a widget requests them.
- Do not publish a URL containing an access token, session key, or administrative control parameter.
- Separate a display page from any page you use to operate OBS.
- After changing permissions, restart or reload the source as the current OBS documentation directs and verify the resulting behavior.
Chat is interaction, not computer access
Chat works well for open questions, suggestions, and reactions. It is intentionally less deterministic than a poll, so moderation and a host decision are essential. Pin or repeat the rule that a message is a suggestion, not an instruction that will automatically run.

A practical chat workflow
- Announce a format, such as “Type A or B; I will choose the next demonstration after two minutes.”
- Use slow mode, subscriber or follower restrictions, blocked terms, and moderator review when the platform offers them.
- Read representative responses rather than treating the loudest message as a vote.
- State which suggestion you accepted and make the screen change yourself.
- Hide the chat overlay or switch scenes when the decision period ends.
Do not connect an unrestricted chat command to an operating-system action. If you automate anything, accept only a fixed command, validate the sender and value, rate-limit repeats, and include an immediate off switch.

Bounded automation: when a request may trigger an action
Automation can reduce workload, but it changes the risk profile. The safe pattern is an allowlist, not a general remote-control bridge.
Use an allowlist
Define the exact actions in advance: for example, show_scene_a, show_scene_b, and clear_overlay. Reject every other string. Never pass viewer text directly to a shell, scripting engine, URL opener, or keyboard simulator.
Keep the endpoint private
Store credentials outside the overlay URL, rotate them if exposed, and limit the endpoint to the local machine or a protected network. A public page should receive the result of an action, not the secret that authorizes the action.
Add host approval
Queue requests for a manual accept or reject step. This gives you a chance to reject unsafe links, personal data, copyrighted material, or anything that would disrupt the stream.
Make failure safe
Set rate limits, timeouts, and a visible disable switch. If the service, bot, or overlay fails, the default should be “no action,” not repeated scene changes or an unlocked desktop.
View-only livestreams and the Google Meet example
Google Meet documents a livestream mode in which eligible organizational meeting viewers can watch and send chat messages without controlling streaming and recording. The feature is not a universal setting for every personal Meet call; availability depends on the work or school account, administrator configuration, and current Meet eligibility.

This is a useful model for separating viewing and messaging from host controls. It does not turn a standard public livestream into an interactive desktop session, and it should not be presented as a replacement for a platform poll.
Why remote screen sharing is a different category
A remote collaboration tool can let guests interact with the shared machine. Drovio’s session documentation explicitly warns that guests can type on the shared computer and says to revoke remote control when guests only need to watch.

Use that type of session only when direct collaboration is the goal—for example, a support call with a trusted participant. For a public stream, a poll or moderated request gives you participation without exposing your desktop, files, passwords, or OBS controls.
Test the interaction before going live
Run the complete workflow offline, in a rehearsal, or in a private test stream. Testing is a recommended safety procedure, not a guarantee that a third-party service will behave identically after an update.

- Join as a viewer from a separate account or browser.
- Submit only the input you intend to allow. Confirm that arbitrary text, links, and unexpected commands are rejected or moderated.
- Check the broadcast view. Verify that the audience sees the poll or result and cannot see your dashboard, private URL, desktop notifications, or credentials.
- Confirm that the screen change still requires your action, or that any automation performs only the allowlisted action.
- Hide the Browser Source and switch to a clean scene. Measure how quickly you can disable the interaction.
- End the poll, close the request queue, revoke temporary permissions, and remove test tokens before the public stream.
Questions your rehearsal should answer
- What happens if the poll expires while you are changing scenes?
- Can a viewer submit duplicate or high-volume requests?
- Does a moderation action remove the message from the overlay as well as chat?
- What does the audience see when the widget’s web page is unavailable?
- Can you stop the interaction without stopping the stream?
Troubleshooting common failures
The overlay is blank
Check the URL, network access, and Browser Source dimensions. Reload the source and confirm that the page works in a normal browser. If the page requires a signed or temporary URL, generate a new one rather than exposing an administrative link.

The poll exists but viewers cannot vote
Verify that the account is eligible for the platform poll feature, that the poll is active, and that viewers are using the intended channel or event link. Eligibility and dashboard labels can change, so use the current platform help page and in-product status.
Viewers see controls or private information
Hide the administrative page, replace the URL with a display-only page, and remove unnecessary Browser Source permissions. Check the scene preview and the program output separately; a source can be hidden in one scene but visible in another.
Chat commands trigger too much
Disable the automation, rotate any exposed credential, remove unrestricted commands, and restore an allowlist with rate limits and host approval. Do not resume until an invalid command produces no action.

End or pause the remote session and revoke remote-control permission. If the purpose was only to collect feedback, replace the session with chat, a poll, or a bounded request page.
Accessibility and moderation are part of the design
Participation fails when viewers cannot read or safely use the interaction. Use high-contrast text, sufficient size, and a position that does not cover captions, gameplay information, or essential alerts. State poll choices and deadlines aloud for viewers who cannot see the overlay. Keep chat instructions short, and provide a way to participate without rapid typing when possible.
Moderators should know the disable procedure, the difference between a suggestion and an approved command, and which information must never be displayed. Treat usernames, links, personal details, and uploaded content as untrusted input.

- Define the exact viewer input and explain its effect.
- Keep OBS, operating-system, and remote-desktop controls host-only.
- Use a native poll or moderated chat before considering automation.
- Embed only a display page in OBS Browser Source.
- Review OBS page permissions and choose the least powerful level.
- Protect overlay URLs, tokens, and administrative dashboards.
- Allowlist and rate-limit every automated action.
- Rehearse submission, display, execution, moderation, and emergency shutdown.
- Revoke remote control whenever viewers only need to watch.
The practical rule is simple: let the audience supply information, not access. A poll, chat message, or bounded request can make a stream feel collaborative while the broadcaster retains the authority to decide, execute, and stop every screen change.
