Let an AI shopping assistant search, compare and summarize products as freely as you like, but keep final authority over the exact seller, item, quantity, total, delivery address, payment method and purchase confirmation. An assistant that only recommends products is doing product discovery. An assistant that sends an order to a merchant and initiates payment is performing agentic checkout; that higher-risk step deserves a deliberate review every time.
What an AI shopping assistant actually does
Shopping features vary widely. A conversational assistant may collect requirements, find products and provide links while you complete checkout yourself. An agentic system can pass order details to a participating merchant, receive shipping and tax information, and request payment. Availability and safeguards depend on the assistant, merchant, country and payment method.
The International Monetary Fund describes current agentic-payment systems as “emerging design patterns rather than settled or standardized architectures” in its April 2026 note (IMF Note No. 2026/004). A security label therefore does not mean that every service follows the same architecture or offers the same buyer protections.

Product discovery versus agentic checkout
- Product discovery: The assistant searches, filters and compares. You open the retailer’s site and control the transaction there.
- Agentic checkout: The assistant transfers a selected order to a supported merchant, which validates the order, calculates tax, offers fulfillment choices, evaluates risk and processes payment on its own systems. The assistant relays information and displays the result.
OpenAI documents one implementation this way: “If a product supports Instant Checkout, users can tap ‘Buy,’ confirm their order, shipping, and payment details, and complete the purchase without ever leaving the chat” (OpenAI, Buy it in ChatGPT). That describes the documented flow for eligible products, not a universal rule for all assistants.

Two safer ways to shop with an assistant

Neither path is automatically safe. Integrated checkout can reduce typing and expose a scoped authorization, while direct retailer checkout gives you a familiar merchant page and avoids granting an assistant purchase authority. Choose based on the controls you can actually see, not on the presence of the word “AI.”
How a documented agentic payment flows
- You describe the need. State constraints such as model, size, color, quantity, budget, delivery date and whether refurbished or used goods are acceptable.
- The assistant finds candidates. Treat listings as suggestions. Check the seller identity, condition, variant, stock status and any sponsored or marketplace designation yourself.
- You select one item. Selection should create a specific order rather than an open-ended instruction such as “buy the best option under my budget.” If the interface cannot show what it selected, stop.
- The merchant validates the request. In the Agentic Commerce Protocol guide, the merchant determines available fulfillment, calculates tax, evaluates risk and handles payment on its systems. It can reject or alter fulfillment options before returning a result.
- The service presents an approval view. Review the exact product, seller, quantity, price, shipping, tax, total, delivery address and payment method. OpenAI’s documented Instant Checkout asks users to confirm order, shipping and payment details before completion (OpenAI).
- A payment request is authorized. Where a supported protocol offers it, authorization is limited to a one-time request, a maximum charge and an expiry based on your selection (Agentic Commerce Protocol). If the interface requests continuing or broad spending permission, do not approve it unless that is exactly what you intended.
- The merchant completes or declines the order. Save the confirmation number, final total, promised delivery date and the merchant’s contact route. The merchant, not the conversational interface, is the party that fulfills the order.
Pre-purchase checklist
Use this checklist immediately before approving an AI-initiated purchase. If any answer is unclear, switch to the merchant’s normal checkout.
- Product: Confirm the exact brand, model, edition, size, color, storage capacity or other variation.
- Condition: Verify new, used, refurbished, rental or digital status and read any condition notes.
- Quantity: Check the number of units, bundles, add-ons and recurring items.
- Seller: Identify the merchant actually responsible for fulfillment, especially on a marketplace. An unfamiliar seller is a reason to stop and investigate.
- Total: Read the full displayed amount, including item price, shipping, taxes, duties, service fees and discounts. Confirm the currency and whether a promotion is one-time or recurring.
- Address: Verify the complete delivery address, apartment or unit number, recipient name and delivery instructions.
- Payment: Confirm the selected card, bank account, wallet or other method and the last four digits or account label shown by the service.
- Terms: Read return, cancellation, warranty, subscription, auto-renewal and delivery terms presented by the merchant.
- Authorization: Prefer a clear final confirmation and, where available, a one-time maximum amount with an expiry. Never approve a broader authority than the order requires.
- Availability: Check that the assistant, merchant and payment method support agentic checkout in your country.
- Record: After approval, save the confirmation email or page and verify that the order details match what you authorized.
What security claims do—and do not—mean
Encryption protects payment data, not the purchase decision
Google says Google Pay encrypts payment information during its Agentic checkout and includes built-in fraud protections (Google Pay Help). This is Google’s description of its system. Encryption can protect data in transit or at rest according to the system design; it cannot establish that a product is genuine, that a seller is reputable, that the price is fair or that the assistant interpreted your request correctly.

Merchant-side controls remain important
In the documented Agentic Commerce Protocol flow, the merchant validates the order, decides fulfillment options, calculates tax, evaluates risk and handles payment on its own infrastructure (key concepts). That separation means an assistant is not necessarily the party holding or processing your payment, but it also means a merchant can change an available option or decline a transaction. Read the merchant’s result rather than assuming the assistant’s initial summary is final.
Identity and intent are developing standards
Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol specifies signed agent and consumer/payment context so merchants can recognize an agent (Visa Developer specifications). Mastercard identifies clear user intent, secure credentials and verifiable agent identity as trust standards (Mastercard, Agentic Commerce rules of the road). These designs address how systems could authenticate an agent and its instruction; they do not independently certify a particular assistant for consumers or guarantee an error-free purchase.
Compare the controls before choosing a checkout path

The available sources document different implementations, not a like-for-like independent security audit. A feature present in one row should not be treated as present in every service.

When to stop and finish directly with the merchant
- The assistant cannot show the exact seller, variation, quantity or complete total.
- A tax, shipping fee, subscription term or delivery date appears only after you approve.
- The order changes between review and payment without a new confirmation.
- The seller is unfamiliar, the listing is inconsistent or the condition is unclear.
- The address or payment method is wrong or cannot be edited before authorization.
- The service asks for standing, unlimited or unusually broad spending authority for a single purchase.
- The assistant claims success but provides no merchant confirmation number or receipt.
- You are redirected to a page whose domain, amount or merchant name does not match the reviewed order.
In any of these cases, cancel the agentic attempt if possible, then open the merchant’s site by entering its known address or using a trusted bookmark. Do not provide additional credentials or payment details to a page reached through an unexpected prompt.
Availability, country and payment-method limits
Google says its agentic checkout works with select merchants in supported countries (Google Pay Help). The Agentic Commerce Protocol documentation says Instant Checkout is available to approved partners (get started). Eligibility can differ for a merchant’s domestic and international storefronts, a physical versus digital product, a card versus wallet, and a guest versus signed-in account.
Before relying on the feature, check the service’s current help page, the merchant’s checkout notice and the payment method’s country rules. If the option is absent, that is not evidence of a security failure; it may simply be unsupported in your region or for that order.

What consumers say about control and trust
Visa’s 2025 US Agentic Commerce Consumer research survey of 1,600 respondents measured stated comfort, not actual safety or adoption. In that US sample, 53% said they would feel comfortable using a shopping service from Amazon, 45% from PayPal and 25% from OpenAI (ChatGPT) (Visa report). Only one in five US respondents said they would still consider using a shopping agent if they had no control over how their data was used. These figures should not be generalized to other countries; the same report presents separate Australia and New Zealand results.
The practical lesson is narrower than a popularity ranking: users expect meaningful control over data and the purchase itself. A confirmation screen, transparent seller and limited authorization make that control visible; a brand name or security slogan does not replace it.

Returns, mistakes and disputes
There is no universal answer for refunds, chargebacks, liability or consumer recourse when an assistant makes an erroneous purchase. Outcomes depend on the merchant, payment method, service terms and applicable jurisdiction. The cited technical documents do not establish a single legal responsibility model.

Keep the assistant transcript or order summary, merchant receipt, authorization screen, timestamps and delivery record. If something is wrong, contact the merchant first using the order reference and follow its return or cancellation process. If the merchant does not resolve an unauthorized or incorrect charge, use the dispute process provided by your payment method and explain exactly what you authorized. Do not assume that an assistant’s confirmation alone creates a special refund right.
A repeatable safe-shopping workflow
- Define boundaries: Tell the assistant whether it may only research, may select from a named shortlist or may prepare a specific order. Set a maximum total and disallow substitutions unless you explicitly approve them.
- Inspect candidates: Compare seller, condition, variant, delivery estimate, return terms and total cost rather than choosing the first result.
- Select one exact order: Require the assistant to restate the item, seller, quantity, total, address and payment method.
- Use the narrowest authorization: Choose one-time approval or a maximum amount and expiry when the service supports it. Decline standing access.
- Confirm on the final screen: Read every field and approve only when it matches your intention.
- Verify completion: Match the merchant receipt to the approved order and save the reference.
- Monitor delivery: Use the merchant’s status page, and contact the merchant promptly about delays, substitutions or unauthorized changes.
This workflow preserves the convenience of automated discovery while keeping the irreversible decision—the exact charge—you control.
