Give a deployed OCI agent a workload identity, not a person’s permanent credentials. For OCI Generative AI deployed applications, the documented pattern is a resource principal: OCI injects a short-lived Resource Principal Session Token (RPST) into the container, and the OCI SDK obtains and refreshes it. Then authorize that identity with narrowly scoped IAM policies for only the services, actions, compartments and resources the agent needs.
Protect the other direction separately. Use inbound OAuth 2.0 to decide who or what may invoke the hosted agent, and add private-endpoint or other network controls when your threat model requires isolation. The exact policy grammar, service support and regional availability must be checked for the OCI service you are calling.
The safe architecture: two authorization decisions, one workload identity
An agent has two very different security questions:
- Who may call the agent? This is inbound authentication and authorization. OCI documentation for hosted applications and agentic tasks describes OAuth 2.0 for validating callers.
- What may the agent call after it is running? This is outbound authorization to Object Storage, Vault, Generative AI and other OCI services. A resource principal or another workload identity answers this question.
Do not treat a caller’s OAuth token as permission for the agent to read a bucket or secret. Conversely, an agent’s resource-principal token does not establish that an end user is allowed to invoke the endpoint. Keeping these trust boundaries separate makes policy review and incident response much clearer.

For OCI Generative AI deployed applications, OCI provisions an RPST in the container runtime. The OCI SDK retrieves and refreshes that token, so the application does not need a durable user token or API key in source code, prompts, tool configuration or environment variables. This statement applies to the OCI-deployed agent application flow documented by Oracle; a self-hosted agent or a third-party framework may need a different integration.
Map the agent’s real capabilities before writing policy
Start with the tools and actions the agent can actually execute. A useful inventory records the service, operation, resource type, compartment and whether access is read-only or mutating.
| Inventory item | Question to answer | Example decision |
|---|---|---|
| Tool | Which function can the model invoke? | Retrieve a document from Object Storage |
| OCI service | Which service API receives the call? | Object Storage or Vault |
| Action | Does the tool inspect, read, use or change data? | Read an object; do not delete or overwrite it |
| Resource scope | Which compartment, bucket, vault or other resource is required? | A dedicated data compartment, not the tenancy |
| Runtime | Where is the agent deployed? | OCI Generative AI deployed application, OCI Compute, or an external runtime |
| Caller | Which people or applications may invoke the agent? | A separately managed OAuth client or user group |
Remove unused tools before attempting to secure them. An agent cannot misuse a capability that is not exposed to its runtime, and a smaller tool surface makes deny testing easier.
Choose the identity mechanism that matches the deployment
| Mechanism | Identity and secret handling | Where it fits | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agent resource principal with RPST | OCI supplies and refreshes a session token in the deployed application runtime. | OCI Generative AI deployed agent applications, as documented by Oracle. | It still needs IAM policies granting the required service actions. |
| Compute instance principal with a dynamic group | The OCI Compute instance is the workload subject; OCI authorizes it through dynamic-group membership. | An agent running on OCI Compute when the target service supports instance-principal authorization. | Validate the current implementation for the selected runtime and service. |
| API key | A user or application key is stored and rotated by the operator. | OCI Generative AI API access where API-key authentication is supported and policy conditions are configured. | It is not interchangeable with the deployed-agent resource-principal flow; avoid making a durable user secret the default. |
| OAuth 2.0 | A caller presents an OAuth token to the hosted application. | Inbound authentication for hosted applications and documented agentic tasks. | OAuth authenticates the caller; it does not by itself grant Object Storage or Vault access to the agent. |
Oracle’s IAM Security Policies guidance says: “Oracle recommends that you assign least privilege access to IAM groups for accessing resources.” Apply the same discipline to dynamic groups and other workload subjects.
Configure outbound access with a resource principal
Prerequisites
- A deployed OCI Generative AI agent application, if you are using the RPST flow described in OCI’s Authentication documentation (updated July 16, 2026).
- An inventory of every tool action and its target OCI resource.
- Named compartments for agent data and secrets, with ownership and lifecycle rules.
- Permission to create dynamic groups and IAM policies, or an administrator who can create them.
- The OCI SDK and service clients configured to use the runtime’s resource-principal signer rather than a hard-coded user signer.
Do not put an OCI user token, API signing key, private key, or other long-lived credential in a system prompt, tool schema, source repository, container image or runtime variable when the platform identity flow is available. Prompt secrecy is not an authentication control: a model, log collector or debugging process may expose prompt content.
Deployment procedure
- List the calls. For each tool, write down the OCI service, operation, resource type and compartment. Mark calls that mutate state, such as writing, deleting or changing configuration.
- Enable the applicable workload identity. For an OCI Generative AI deployed application, follow the service’s resource-principal setup so OCI provisions an RPST to the application container. Confirm that the SDK client is using resource-principal authentication.
- Create a dedicated dynamic group. Make its matching rule represent only the intended agent resources. Use resource type and compartment constraints where supported; do not place unrelated applications in the same group merely for convenience.
- Attach narrow policies. Grant the dynamic group the smallest useful verb on the smallest useful resource scope. Start with read-only access and add a mutating verb only when a documented tool requires it.
- Configure inbound protection independently. Require the supported OAuth 2.0 flow for callers of the hosted agent, with issuer, audience, scope and token validation settings appropriate to your identity provider.
- Exercise both paths. Test a valid caller, an invalid or expired caller token, an allowed outbound operation and a denied outbound operation. Review the resulting application errors and OCI audit records where the service provides them.
Use dynamic groups to constrain which workloads receive permission
A dynamic group is an IAM subject whose membership is evaluated from OCI resource attributes rather than from a human administrator adding users. The matching rule is therefore part of your security boundary. A broad rule can silently give every matching workload the same access.

Build a narrow matching rule
- Target the actual OCI resource type used by the agent. Do not assume that a similarly named application, endpoint or job is equivalent.
- Constrain the compartment when the agent is intended to run only there.
- Separate production, staging and development agents into different groups when their data or permissions differ.
- Review the rule whenever the deployment moves compartments, changes resource type or adds a new agent.
OCI’s Generative AI Agents IAM reference identifies service resource types including genai-agent and genai-agent-data-ingestion-job. Use those documented types only when they describe the resource in your tenancy and region. A rule that matches nothing produces authorization failures; a rule that matches too much produces unintended access.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the target compartment and resource
Identity membership and resource scope are separate constraints. A dynamic group may correctly identify the agent while a policy still grants access to an entire tenancy. Conversely, a tightly scoped policy will not help if the matching rule includes unrelated workloads. Review both sides together and ask: “Can this exact agent identity perform this exact action on this exact resource?”
Write least-privilege OCI IAM policies
Understand the four policy verbs
OCI IAM’s baseline verbs increase in privilege:
| Verb | Use it when the agent needs to | Typical caution |
|---|---|---|
inspect |
See basic metadata without reading the resource contents. | Confirm that metadata alone is sufficient for the tool. |
read |
Retrieve resource data or configuration. | Limit the compartment and resource type; avoid granting writes. |
use |
Perform an operational action without full administration. | Check the service definition because “use” has service-specific effects. |
manage |
Create, update or delete resources and perform administrative operations. | Reserve it for a demonstrated requirement and a tightly controlled workload. |
Oracle’s baseline syntax is Allow group <group_name> to <verb> <resource-type> in compartment <compartment_name>, with an equivalent tenancy scope when appropriate. For a dynamic group, the subject is written as dynamic-group <dynamic_group_name>. Replace the resource type and scope with the exact values documented for the target service.
Scope service access to the data compartment
An illustrative read-only Object Storage grant would follow the documented form: Allow dynamic-group agent-prod-dg to read objects in compartment agent-data. Treat this as a pattern, not a universal copy-and-paste policy: verify the Object Storage resource type, compartment name and any service-specific conditions in the current OCI console or documentation.
If the agent must retrieve a secret, create a policy for the Vault resource type and compartment that contain only the required secrets. Do not grant tenancy-wide secret administration merely because one tool needs to read one value. A tool that never creates, rotates or deletes secrets should not receive manage access.
Use conditions for finer boundaries
OCI supports policy conditions that can further constrain a statement. Depending on the service, conditions may limit a target compartment, bucket, resource tag or other request attribute. Verify condition support for the exact API operation before relying on it; unsupported conditions can deny legitimate calls or, if omitted, leave the policy broader than intended.

Do not use administrator examples as runtime defaults
The aggregate manage genai-agent-family example in the Generative AI Agents IAM reference is an administrator setup pattern, not a safe runtime identity. Likewise, the separate generative-ai-family user-group policy is described as suitable for administrators or sandbox groups. Keep agent execution policies distinct from the human permissions used to create, configure and administer agents.
Special considerations for Generative AI agent ingestion
OCI’s documented data-ingestion example grants an agent read access to objects in a selected compartment and allows additional constraints based on the target compartment, bucket name or tags. It specifically warns that object-name or prefix conditions are unsupported for that documented ingestion scenario and can cause ingestion to fail.
Therefore, isolate ingestion inputs in a dedicated bucket or compartment when you need a narrow dataset boundary. Do not attempt to simulate object-prefix filtering with an unsupported IAM condition. If the service’s current documentation adds or changes condition support, revalidate the policy before adopting it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProtect the inbound agent endpoint with OAuth 2.0
Configure caller authentication as a separate control plane. The hosted application should validate the OAuth issuer, signature, audience, expiration and required scopes or claims before accepting a request. Map those claims to the business authorization rules for your application; possession of a valid token should not automatically grant every user access to every agent function.
Oracle’s Permissions to Generative AI Resources page, updated April 3, 2026, describes OAuth as the only supported authentication type for agentic tasks in that documented context. Feature support can change, so check the current service page for your region and endpoint type before selecting an alternative.
After a caller is admitted, the agent still uses its own outbound resource principal. Never pass the caller’s bearer token into an OCI SDK client as a substitute for the agent’s workload identity unless the specific service and architecture explicitly require delegated access and you have reviewed the resulting trust boundary.

Add network isolation where the threat model requires it
IAM answers who may perform an action; network controls limit where traffic can travel. OCI governance documentation identifies private endpoints as a way to keep model access within a secure network boundary. OCI permissions guidance also references Zero Trust Packet Routing (ZPR) for private-endpoint scenarios.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use a private endpoint when your compliance or threat model requires private connectivity, then verify that the target service, region, agent endpoint and SDK path support it. A private endpoint does not replace IAM: an agent with an overly broad policy remains overly privileged even when its traffic stays on a private network. Conversely, a perfect IAM policy cannot compensate for an endpoint exposed to an untrusted network when network isolation is mandatory.
Test the policy as an allow-and-deny matrix
Security testing should demonstrate both intended success and intentional failure. Record the identity, operation, resource, compartment and expected result for each case.
- Allowed: read the one object or secret required by a documented tool.
- Denied: read an object in a different compartment.
- Denied: write, delete or administer a resource when the tool is read-only.
- Denied: call an unapproved OCI service.
- Allowed or denied inbound call: use a valid OAuth token with the required scope, then repeat with an expired token, wrong audience or missing scope.
- Boundary check: deploy a nonproduction agent and confirm that it does not match the production dynamic group.
Capture the error type and request identifier for each denial. OCI’s IAM security guidance says instance access is captured in customer-available audit logs; that statement is specifically about instances and should not be treated as proof that every agent flow exposes identical records. Confirm the audit events and retention available for the services and agent platform you use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common failure modes and fixes
The SDK reports missing credentials
Check that the application is running in the OCI deployment mode that provisions the RPST, that the resource-principal signer is selected, and that the container can reach the required OCI identity endpoints. Do not “fix” the error by embedding a user API key until you have established that the selected runtime cannot use the documented workload identity.
The policy exists but every call is denied
Compare the dynamic-group matching rule with the agent’s actual resource type and compartment. Then compare the policy’s resource type, verb and compartment with the target API. A mismatch in any one of those fields is sufficient to deny the request.

Only ingestion calls fail
Review the ingestion-specific policy requirements. In particular, remove object-name or prefix conditions if you copied them into the documented ingestion scenario; Oracle states that those conditions are unsupported there and may cause ingestion to fail. Use a dedicated bucket or compartment to create the data boundary instead.
The agent can perform an unexpected write or administration action
Search all policies attached to the dynamic group and any broader group or tenancy statements that apply to the same subject. Replace manage with read or use where possible, split production and nonproduction identities, and remove unused tools.
Users can reach the endpoint without the expected authorization
Inspect the inbound OAuth configuration, not the outbound IAM policy. Verify issuer, audience, signature validation, expiration handling and required scopes. A correct resource-principal policy cannot prevent an unauthenticated caller from reaching an endpoint that does not enforce caller authentication.

Operate the identity safely over time
- Keep separate dynamic groups and compartments for production, staging and experiments.
- Review every tool addition as an IAM change; a new tool can require a new service permission.
- Prefer read-only verbs and resource-level or compartment-level scope. Document the business reason for every
useormanagegrant. - Recheck matching rules after redeployment, compartment moves or changes to the OCI agent resource type.
- Use tags, compartments and conditions supported by the target service to keep data domains distinct.
- Review audit events and application logs for denied requests, unexpected resources and unusual operation types.
- Remove policies, dynamic-group membership and OAuth scopes that are no longer needed.
- Revalidate regional availability, endpoint requirements, policy grammar and supported authentication methods against current OCI documentation before a production change.
What this pattern does—and does not—cover
The resource-principal/RPST guidance here is for OCI Generative AI deployed agent applications. An agent running on OCI Compute may instead use an instance principal and dynamic group. An externally hosted or self-managed framework may require its own workload identity integration, network path and secret-management design. Do not assume that a policy written for one runtime automatically applies to another.
The pattern also does not make the model trustworthy by itself. Tool schemas should validate input, application code should enforce business rules, and sensitive operations should require explicit confirmation or human approval where appropriate. IAM limits what the workload can do; it does not decide whether a particular model-generated request is sensible.
Practical decision checklist
- Is the agent deployed as an OCI Generative AI application, on OCI Compute, or outside OCI?
- Which identity mechanism is supported for that runtime and target service?
- What exact service actions, resource types and compartments does each tool require?
- Can the workload use a resource principal or instance principal instead of a durable user credential?
- Does the dynamic-group rule match only the intended production resources?
- Is each policy using the narrowest verb and scope, with supported conditions where useful?
- Are inbound OAuth authorization and outbound OCI IAM authorization configured independently?
- Does the threat model require a private endpoint or ZPR-related network control?
- Have both allowed and denied operations been tested and their audit evidence reviewed?
- Is there an owner and review date for every policy, dynamic group and OAuth scope?
Following these steps gives the agent a renewable workload identity, limits its permissions to the resources it actually needs, and preserves a separate gate for callers. That combination is safer than embedding a human credential and relying on the prompt or application code to keep it secret.
