To learn neutral in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, practice the decisions that happen before either player lands a hit: hold a useful distance, test your character’s reach, approach without overcommitting, guard when the opponent is likely to swing, and choose a response to what they actually do. Start with Startup Battle, then use Training Mode to observe spacing and defense before adding assists, switches, and combo conversions.
The sequence below follows the game’s official beginner guidance while clearly labeling the practice drills as editorial suggestions rather than developer-prescribed routines.
What “neutral” means in Marvel Tokon
Neutral is the maneuvering phase of a fight. Neither player has a confirmed hit or a sustained advantage, so both are trying to create a safe opening while managing distance, attack reach, approach options, and the opponent’s likely response.
In practical terms, neutral asks questions such as:

- Am I close enough for a basic attack, or will it whiff?
- If I move forward, what can the opponent use to stop me?
- Should I attack, keep guarding, retreat, or call a teammate?
- If my attack connects, what simple follow-up can I convert into?
The official materials do not provide character-specific frame data, exact attack ranges, a neutral tier list, or a measured learning-time statistic. Therefore, the most reliable way to learn is to observe your chosen character in Training Mode and make decisions against the opponent’s behavior rather than memorize unsupported rankings.
Begin with Startup Battle
Startup Battle is the correct first stop if you know only the basic controls or are returning after a break. The official Beginner’s Guide describes its Basics lessons as instruction for actions performed by an individual character and its Assemble lessons as instruction for team mechanics. The lessons cover attacks, combos, skills, and character-specific actions step by step.
Complete the lessons with one character before trying to optimize anything. Neutral becomes difficult when movement, guard, skills, assists, and switches all feel unfamiliar at once. Startup Battle lets you isolate those actions first.
What to retain from the lessons
- Which buttons produce your character’s light, medium, and heavy attacks.
- How your character’s skills differ from ordinary attacks.
- How to guard and how the game signals defensive mechanics.
- How to call an Assemble Assist and how team directions select different teammates.
- Which character-specific action you can use without losing awareness of the opponent.
Do not treat completion of a lesson as proof that you understand neutral. It only gives you the vocabulary and controls needed for the next stage: observing what works at a particular distance and what leaves you exposed.
Choose one character without over-optimizing
The official guide recommends starting with a hero you like and expanding the roster gradually. Kazuto Sekine, Game Director and Lead Battle Designer at Arc System Works, writes: “That’s why we recommend starting with the hero you like most and gradually expanding your roster from there.”
The same guide identifies Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine as beginner-friendly, and describes Iron Man and Spider-Man as relatively easy to learn. It describes Storm and Danger as more advanced. These are the guide’s ease-of-use recommendations, not a universal ranking of strength or a substitute for personal preference.
Use the character-select rating as a starting point
If you have no preference, choose a character with a higher Ease of Use rating and stay with that character long enough to recognize their basic ranges. If you already have a favorite, use that character even if the learning curve is steeper. Familiarity with one moveset is more useful than shallow practice with the entire roster.

Build spacing awareness in Training Mode
PlayStation describes Training Mode as a place to experiment with every character, practice combos, learn mechanics, and customize scenarios and dummy settings. It is also available as offline content, so you can practice neutral without an online subscription.
Observe one attack at several distances
- Enter Training Mode with your chosen character.
- Place the dummy at a distance where your character’s basic attack might reach.
- Try the attack once from that distance, then move slightly farther away and try again.
- Repeat from a closer position.
- Watch whether the attack connects, whiffs, or leaves you vulnerable after the attempt.
This is an editorial observation exercise, not a developer-prescribed drill and not a claim of frame-data testing. The purpose is to build a visual sense of “in range” and “out of range.” Repeat the exercise with a second attack so you can compare reach and commitment.

Mark a useful starting distance
Pick a distance at which at least one low-commitment attack can reach the opponent. Stand there without attacking and watch the dummy. Your first neutral goal is not to force a hit; it is to recognize when your chosen attack is realistically available and when you are too far away.
When an attack misses, do not immediately press another button. Note whether the opponent could have walked forward, attacked, or punished the recovery. Neutral improves when you understand the consequence of a miss, not merely the animation of the move.

Defense is part of neutral, not a separate skill. The official guide specifies these basic guard inputs:
- Standing guard: hold back.
- Crouching guard: hold down-back.
First practice recognizing an incoming attack and maintaining guard. If you always swing whenever the opponent moves, you will never learn whether they are approaching to attack, baiting a response, or simply changing distance.
Add the named defensive mechanics carefully
| Option | Input | What the official guide says it does | Best learning use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic guard | Hold back, or hold down-back | Blocks standing or crouching attacks according to the input. | Learn the opponent’s timing and stop giving away avoidable hits. |
| Assemble Counter | Square + Cross while not guarding | Your character backsteps and automatically counterattacks if attacked during the maneuver. | Practice recognizing an incoming attack before relying on the timing. |
| Crossover | Square + Cross while guarding | A teammate interrupts the opponent’s attack and creates a counteroffensive opening. | Use after basic guard feels reliable and you understand when an attack is actually coming. |
Practice Assemble Counter and Crossover in Startup Battle before adding them to live matches. They are specialized answers, not replacements for ordinary blocking. If you use them whenever you feel uncertain, the opponent can wait, bait the attempt, or punish the recovery.
Learn one low-commitment attack and one approach
Neutral becomes manageable when you have a small set of choices you can explain. Start with one basic attack that reaches at your preferred distance and one approach option that closes space without forcing you into a long, rehearsed sequence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTest the attack
- Does it reach the opponent from your chosen starting distance?
- What happens when it whiffs?
- Can you guard quickly after the attempt, or are you exposed?
- What can you do if the opponent blocks?
The official sources do not establish universal ranges or frame advantages for individual characters, so answer these questions by observation in Training Mode rather than by assuming one character’s move behaves like another’s.
Test the approach
Move toward the dummy without attacking, then repeat while guarding. The comparison shows how much risk you take simply by advancing. Next, let the dummy attack on a predictable setting and see whether your approach is interrupted. This is another writer-created practice suggestion, not a claim that the game prescribes this exact routine.
Neutral is not “always move forward.” Sometimes the correct approach is to wait at the edge of the opponent’s reach, let their attack miss, and then take space while they recover.

Respond to the opponent instead of repeating a combo
A combo is a conversion after you have already earned a hit. Repeating a combo in Training Mode does not teach you how to earn that hit. For neutral practice, alternate between decisions:
- Return the characters to the same distance.
- Guard and observe what the dummy does.
- Use your low-commitment attack only when the spacing makes sense.
- Try your approach option once, then stop and guard.
- Reset and choose a different response.
Keep asking, “What did the opponent do, and what problem am I solving?” If the opponent stays still, you may take space. If they swing early, you may guard or let the attack miss. If they retreat, a direct chase may be less useful than holding the space they gave up.
A simple editorial drill
In Training Mode, alternate between guarding and using one attack or approach from a fixed distance. After each reset, state the reason for your choice aloud or in a note: “I attacked because I was in range,” “I guarded because the dummy advanced,” or “I waited because my attack would whiff.” Add a teammate assist only after you can explain the decision. This drill is editorial advice and has not been validated by a developer study or personal test.
Add assists and switches after the basic decisions are clear
Team mechanics expand neutral, but they also add inputs and timing to an already complex decision. The official guide recommends learning assists before assist-to-switch techniques.
Assist directions
Press Cross to call an Assemble Assist. The direction held with the call selects the teammate:

- Neutral or forward: teammate two.
- Down: teammate three.
- Back: teammate four.
Before calling an assist, identify its job. You might want help covering an approach, forcing the opponent to guard while you move, or making space while you retreat. Do not assume one assist is universally best; the useful choice depends on the characters and the situation.
Switching options
Use a direction plus L2 to switch directly to a character. After an assist, a brief on-screen “Switch?” prompt can appear; pressing L2 during that prompt switches to that character.
Practice the sequence in this order:
- Call an assist without switching.
- Call the assist only when you can describe the space or response it is meant to affect.
- Use the “Switch?” prompt after the assist.
- Try direct switching once the assist timing feels familiar.
The guide gives mixing close- and long-range specialists as one team-building idea, using Wolverine and Iron Man as an example, while also saying the best team is ultimately made from the heroes you favor. That example is not a neutral tier list.
Use combos as conversions, not as a neutral plan

| Sequence | Documented result |
|---|---|
| L → L → L → L | Chains into a Skill and can trigger a Break. |
| M → M → M | Leads into a Super Skill. |
| H → H → H | Leads into an Ultimate Skill. |
| L → M → H → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack | An illustrated, more advanced route. |
These are documented combo examples, not proof that any route is optimal in neutral or for every character. Practice choosing the simplest conversion you can perform after a real opening. If you cannot yet explain why the opening occurred, return to spacing and defense rather than adding a longer route.
Choose between Quick Skill and Command Input
The game offers traditional Command Inputs and Quick Skill, which executes a skill with one button. The official Beginner’s Guide recommends Quick Skills for newcomers while they learn fundamentals. It states that Command Inputs provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge, then suggests adding command inputs as you become comfortable.
| Input style | Officially stated trade-off | Neutral-learning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Skill | One-button skill execution; recommended for newcomers. | Leaves more attention for spacing, guarding, and reading the opponent. |
| Command Input | Slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge generation. | Add after the decision is clear enough that execution is not crowding out observation. |
The Quick Skill button can be customized in control settings. Pick the layout that lets you execute your chosen option consistently; the goal is to practice decisions, not to demonstrate a particular controller style.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a short, repeatable practice session
Once Startup Battle is complete, use this writer-created session as a structure for Training Mode:
- Five minutes of movement: walk in and out of your preferred range without attacking.
- Five minutes of guard: hold back or down-back while watching the dummy’s approach and attacks.
- Five minutes of one attack: test when it reaches, when it whiffs, and what you can do afterward.
- Five minutes of approach decisions: alternate between advancing, guarding, and waiting.
- Optional team block: add one assist and one switch only after you can state the purpose of each call.
Reset often. Neutral is about repeated choices from comparable situations, so a clean reset teaches more than an extended sequence in which distance and resources have drifted.
Common neutral mistakes and corrections
Attacking from too far away
Symptom: your attack repeatedly misses while the opponent can walk forward or retaliate.
Correction: move closer, use a more suitable attack if your character has one, or hold your position until the opponent enters range. Confirm the distance visually in Training Mode.
Pressing after every blocked attack
Symptom: you continue attacking because a previous sequence worked once.
Correction: guard after the attempt and watch whether the opponent changes timing. Neutral improves when you can stop, not only when you can continue.

A specialized controller is optional. The official FAQ confirms support on PS5 for compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers and says inputs can be customized. It does not state that either type is required to learn neutral, so use the standard controller if it lets you move, guard, and call your chosen options consistently.
What the official guidance does—and does not—establish
The Beginner’s Guide is dated July 20, 2026 and was written for the Open Beta. The game page and FAQ were current when accessed October 13, 2026. Those materials support the controls, modes, character-learning advice, and practice sequence described here.
They do not establish current patch-level balance changes, character-specific frame data, exact attack ranges, a validated neutral tier list, or a neutral-specific success rate. If you need matchup- or patch-specific advice, consult the current in-game Character Guides and official patch notes rather than treating a general beginner recommendation as a permanent competitive judgment.
