The fastest way to learn MARVEL TōKON: Fighting Souls is to narrow the game down to one hero, three repeat-button routes, basic guard, and one assist call. You do not need to understand all four characters, every counter, or advanced motion inputs before your first match. Build those skills in that order, using Training Mode and the game’s built-in guides, then add switching and longer combos when the basics feel automatic.

This progression follows the beginner guidance from game director and lead battle designer Kazuto Sekine and the current official game FAQ. Character Ease of Use ratings are starting points, not power rankings, and no published data shows that an “easy” character wins more often.

What to learn first

Tag-team fighters ask you to manage more than a conventional one-on-one game: multiple characters, assists, switches, team resources and defensive interactions. MARVEL TōKON: Fighting Souls reduces that initial load with beginner Link Attacks, Quick Skills and offline instruction. Treat the game as a sequence of small habits instead of one enormous system.

  1. Choose one character you genuinely like. Use the Ease of Use stars to break ties.
  2. Learn the attack buttons and three automatic routes. Repeating Light, Medium or Heavy teaches timing while producing useful attacks.
  3. Make standing and crouching guard your first defensive reflex.
  4. Add one assist call before learning constant character switching.
  5. Use Quick Skills while learning fundamentals. Move to Command Inputs after you can execute the basics reliably.
  6. Practice offline, then choose casual, ranked or local play when you are ready.

The official beginner guide’s advice is deliberately reassuring: “Don’t worry about mastering everything right away.” Your first objective is consistency, not maximum damage.

Pick a first character without overthinking tier lists

On the character-select screen, look at each fighter’s Ease of Use stars. Then choose the Marvel character whose movement, attacks or personality makes you want to play another round. Interest matters because you will repeat the same actions many times while building muscle memory.

Suggested starting characters

Character How to use the recommendation
Captain America Named in the official beginner guide as especially suitable for newcomers.
Ms. Marvel Named as especially beginner-friendly; a good first choice if you enjoy her play style.
Wolverine Named as especially beginner-friendly.
Iron Man Described by the game team as relatively easy to learn.
Spider-Man Also described as relatively easy to learn.
Storm Described as more advanced; consider her after you understand the core controls.
Danger Described as more advanced; her inclusion is not a warning about strength, only about the learning curve.

These are the development team’s onboarding suggestions, not a ranking of competitive strength. A character with a higher Ease of Use rating is not guaranteed to be stronger, safer or more successful online. Stay with your first choice long enough to learn basic attacks and at least one Skill before adding another member to your practice rotation. Sekine puts the idea plainly: “That’s why we recommend starting with the hero you like most and gradually expanding your roster from there.”

Understand the three attack buttons and Link Attacks

The beginner examples use Light (L), Medium (M) and Heavy (H) attack buttons. Your physical button labels can differ by platform or custom mapping, so confirm which control is assigned to each action in the settings. A Link Attack is a sequence created by pressing the same attack button repeatedly; the game handles the timing and follows the sequence into a special attack.

Your first three routes

Input sequence Result taught by the official guide First practice target
L → L → L → L Chains into a Skill and can trigger a Break, the stage-transition effect. Press Light four times at a steady rhythm and watch for the Skill and transition.
M → M → M Leads into a Super Skill. Repeat Medium three times, then identify the Super Skill animation.
H → H → H Leads into an Ultimate Skill. Repeat Heavy three times and notice when the Ultimate Skill begins.

Do not start by memorizing a long optimized combo. First make each route happen on demand from a neutral position. The point is to learn the game’s rhythm, recognize when your character has finished an attack sequence and become comfortable pressing the attack buttons without staring at the controller.

The next route, when the basics are stable

Once the three repeat-button sequences are reliable, practice the guide’s expanded route:

L → M → H → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack

Think of this as a second-stage exercise, not a requirement for your first online match. It introduces the transition from normal attacks to a Skill and then to team-oriented offense. If you drop it, return to the shorter Link Attacks rather than adding speed or more buttons.

Make guarding your first match habit

New players often focus on attacking because combos are visible and satisfying. In a tag fighter, surviving long enough to recognize an opening is just as important. Use the controls shown in the guide, while checking your own layout because button glyphs and mappings can change.

  • Standing guard: hold Back.
  • Crouching guard: hold Down-Back.

Start by blocking a single incoming attack from the training opponent. Then hold guard through a short sequence and release it only after the opponent has finished. Your first defensive goal is not to punish every blocked move; it is to stop pressing buttons during attacks you cannot safely interrupt.

Assemble Counter

When you are not guarding, press Square + Cross together. The guide describes Assemble Counter as creating a backstep and producing a counter if the opponent attacks during that action. It is a timing-based defensive option, not a universal answer. Practice it against a recorded attack so you can see when the backstep avoids the hit and when your timing is late.

Crossover

While guarding, press Square + Cross to call a teammate into a Crossover. The guide describes this as an interruption that creates a counterattack opening. Because Assemble Counter and Crossover use the same listed button combination in different defensive states, make the state your reminder: no guard for the backstep option, guard held for the teammate interruption.

If you use a controller with different symbols, identify the actions in your settings and preserve the distinction between “not guarding” and “guarding.” The official material explains the inputs and intended effects, but does not establish matchup-specific frame advantages or claim that either option is always safe.

Add your team with one assist before learning switches

Four characters are available on each player’s team, but the match does not expose all four immediately. At the start, only the first two team members are available. A qualifying stage transition or wall-bounce, or losing a round, grants access to the third and fourth members. This staged access means you can learn team calls without managing the full roster in the opening seconds.

Call an Assemble Assist

Press Cross to call an Assemble Assist. Add the direction associated with the teammate you want. The guide lists these directional calls:

Teammate Assist input listed in the guide
Second team member Neutral or Right + Cross
Third team member Down + Cross
Fourth team member Left + Cross

Because the first two members are the only ones available at the opening, begin with the second-member call. In Training Mode, call it after a blocked attack and watch where your partner appears. You are learning spacing and timing, not trying to create an elaborate lockdown sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switch directly with L2

To switch characters directly, combine a direction with L2. Use this only after you can call your basic assist without losing control of the current character. A direct switch changes who is on screen; an assist lets your current character remain active while the teammate helps briefly.

Use the “Switch?” transition window

After an assist, the game can display a “Switch?” prompt. Press L2 during that window to rotate a teammate in as a transition. Practice watching for the prompt instead of pressing L2 repeatedly. The goal is to recognize the visual cue, call the assist, and then decide deliberately whether the situation is worth turning into a switch.

Choose Quick Skills or Command Inputs

MARVEL TōKON offers two ways to execute Skills. Quick Skills use a single button, reducing the number of simultaneous actions you must remember. Traditional Command Inputs use motion inputs. The official guide recommends Quick Skills for newcomers while they learn fundamentals.

Input approach Execution Documented trade-off Best time to use it
Quick Skills Single-button Skill execution. Lower initial execution load; the guide does not assign the traditional-input damage or gauge bonus to this method. Your first Training Mode sessions and early matches.
Command Inputs Traditional motion-input commands. Slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge, according to the official guide. After you can defend, perform Link Attacks and recognize your openings.

The choice is not permanent. Start with Quick Skills so an incorrect motion does not hide a lesson about spacing or defense. Introduce one Command Input at a time in Training Mode, then compare whether the extra damage or Skill Gauge is worth the additional execution effort for your character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Training Mode as a short, repeatable curriculum

Training Mode is available offline, as are Battle Guides and Character Guides. The official FAQ describes options for setting training scenarios, adjusting the bot, recording and replaying a bot’s actions, and practicing in local two-player training. Use those tools to isolate one question per session.

A first 20-minute session

  1. Confirm controls. Identify Light, Medium, Heavy, Skill, Cross, Square and L2 in your current mapping. Turn on command-input, frame-data or damage displays if you want those readouts.
  2. Perform L → L → L → L. Repeat until the Skill and possible Break occur consistently.
  3. Perform M → M → M and H → H → H. Learn the visual difference between a Super Skill and an Ultimate Skill.
  4. Block a recorded attack. Practice Back and Down-Back without trying to retaliate.
  5. Test one defense. Record an attack, release guard, try Assemble Counter, then repeat while holding guard to see Crossover.
  6. Call the second character’s assist. Add the direction and Cross, then observe its arrival and recovery.

Stop when the actions are repeatable, not when you have exhausted every menu. Short sessions make it easier to remember which input caused a mistake.

A second-stage session

  1. Warm up with each of the three Link Attacks once.
  2. Practice L → M → H → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack slowly.
  3. Record a bot that approaches, then alternate between guard and an Assemble Counter attempt.
  4. Call an assist, wait for “Switch?” and press L2 during the prompt.
  5. Try one Command Input and compare its execution, damage and Skill Gauge result with the Quick Skill version.

If a longer route breaks, return to the last route you could perform consistently. Progress comes from adding one decision, not from replacing every simple action at once.

Move from offline modes to real matches

You can learn the fundamentals without an internet connection. The official FAQ lists Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides and Character Guides among the offline content. Begin with whichever mode lets you repeat your chosen character’s basic actions without time pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to try local Versus

Local Versus is useful once you can guard and perform at least one Link Attack. Tell your practice partner that your goals are blocking, one assist call and one switch—not winning every exchange. If no partner is available, continue with the bot settings and recording tools in Training Mode.

When to try online play

Online lobby, private-room, ranked and casual features require an internet connection and a platform account. On PlayStation 5, online play also requires PlayStation Plus. None of those requirements applies to offline practice. Start with a casual setting or a private room if the pressure of ranked play makes it difficult to observe your own decisions.

After each match, choose one review question: Did you hold guard when the opponent approached? Did you spend an assist before switching? Could you perform a Link Attack from neutral? Keeping the review to one question prevents a loss from becoming an unstructured list of mistakes.

Understand the four-character format without trying to control everything

The game is built around four-character teams. That does not mean you must memorize four complete move lists on day one. Treat the first two members as your initial working pair, then learn the third and fourth as the match makes them available.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • First phase: use your lead character’s Light, Medium and Heavy routes, guard and the second member’s assist.
  • After a qualifying transition or wall-bounce: notice that additional teammates become available and test one new directional assist.
  • After losing a round: use the next round as a chance to call a newly available teammate deliberately rather than pressing every team input.

This staged approach also explains why an early round can feel less crowded than a late one. The full four-character management problem arrives gradually through the match’s own progression.

Optional controller choices and settings

The official FAQ confirms support for PlayStation 5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers, along with customizable button mapping. Those devices are optional; the built-in Quick Skills and a standard controller are sufficient for learning the beginner routes.

Control choice Practical implication for a newcomer
Standard gamepad Lets you begin immediately and use Quick Skills while learning guard, assists and switches.
Arcade stick Uses an arcade-style lever and buttons; useful if that layout is already familiar to you.
Leverless controller Uses buttons for directional input; useful if you prefer that style and can map the game’s actions comfortably.

Choose hardware for comfort and consistent inputs, not because a device is required for beginner performance. Before a match, verify that your custom mapping still leaves the guide’s actions—Light, Medium, Heavy, Cross, Square and L2—easy to reach.

Common beginner problems and specific fixes

“My repeated-button combo stops early.”

Return to a neutral position and press the same button four times for Light, three for Medium or three for Heavy. Avoid adding directional inputs until you can see the expected Skill, Super Skill or Ultimate Skill. If the physical button is remapped, confirm the action in the settings rather than relying on its printed symbol.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I attack constantly and get hit.”

Spend a Training Mode round holding Back, then Down-Back, against a recorded approach. In your next match, make blocking your first response when the opponent moves toward you. Only add Assemble Counter or Crossover after you can identify whether you are currently guarding.

“I press Square + Cross and get the wrong defense.”

The same listed combination has different results based on guard state. Release guard to test Assemble Counter; hold guard to test Crossover. Practice each in separate drills so the state—not a rushed button mash—determines the outcome.

“I cannot call my third or fourth teammate.”

At match start, only the first two team members are available. Wait for a qualifying stage transition or wall-bounce, or for a round loss, before expecting access to the remaining two.

“Command Inputs feel impossible.”

Use Quick Skills. The official guide specifically recommends them while newcomers learn fundamentals. Add traditional motions later for their documented slight damage and Skill Gauge benefits, one Skill at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I switch accidentally.”

Separate your drills: first call an assist with Cross and its direction; then practice a direct direction + L2 switch; finally wait for “Switch?” and press L2 only during that prompt. Deliberate pauses reveal which action is causing the unwanted rotation.

A practical four-week learning plan

Stage Skills to practice Ready-to-advance check
Sessions 1–2 Character selection, control mapping, L/M/H Link Attacks and standing guard. You can perform each repeat-button route and block a recorded approach.
Sessions 3–4 Crouching guard, Assemble Counter and Crossover. You know whether you are guarding before pressing Square + Cross.
Sessions 5–6 Second-member Assemble Assist and the “Switch?” prompt. You can call the assist intentionally and switch during the prompt.
Sessions 7–8 The L → M → H route, one Command Input and a newly available teammate. You can add one layer without losing your guard and basic Link Attack.

The stages are a pacing suggestion, not a timed test. If a session takes longer, repeat it. The official materials provide no measured beginner completion time or success rate, so any claim that you should master the game in a fixed number of days would be misleading.

What to learn after the basics

Once you can defend, call an assist and perform a short route under pressure, investigate your character’s Character Guide and the game’s Battle Guides. Explore how your chosen hero uses the additional teammates, when a switch is worth the risk and how the longer route changes with position. Then compare Quick Skills with Command Inputs in situations where the extra Skill Gauge matters.

Keep expanding gradually: one new character, one new assist timing or one new defensive response per practice block. Four-character teams reward familiarity more than a shallow attempt to memorize every option at once. The game’s 20-character launch roster gives you room to experiment later; it does not require you to sample all 20 before you can play effectively.

Key facts about the game’s learning environment

  • The game launched with 20 playable characters, according to PlayStation’s product information.
  • Each player uses a four-character team, with access to the third and fourth members opening during match progression.
  • Offline learning includes Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides and Character Guides.
  • Online lobby, private-room, ranked and casual features require internet and a platform account; PlayStation 5 online play also requires PlayStation Plus.
  • The product lists 10 spoken-language options and 16 text-language options. Those are availability counts, not evidence of different learning outcomes.

Use the official in-game displays and your own control settings as the final authority if labels change between platforms or updates. The beginner guide was published July 20, 2026 in the context of the July open beta, while the current FAQ covers modes and controller compatibility; separating those contexts avoids treating an early guide as a promise about every future balance or interface change.

Your first-match checklist

  • Pick one character you enjoy and note the Ease of Use stars.
  • Confirm Light, Medium, Heavy, Skill, Cross, Square and L2 in your control settings.
  • Perform L → L → L → L once, then M → M → M and H → H → H.
  • Hold Back or Down-Back when the opponent approaches.
  • Call the second teammate with the listed direction plus Cross.
  • Do not expect the third and fourth teammates before a qualifying transition, wall-bounce or round loss.
  • Use Quick Skills unless you are intentionally practicing a Command Input.
  • After the match, review one decision instead of trying to fix everything at once.

That checklist gives you a complete beginner loop: choose, attack simply, guard, call help, practice offline and review one decision. Add the game’s deeper counters, switches and traditional inputs only when this loop feels dependable.
