The fastest reliable way to learn Magic: The Gathering before a Universes Beyond game is to learn the shared game first, play a guided match with a ready-to-play deck, and only then study the crossover set’s mechanics and story. A themed starter kit can make that first game more motivating, but it does not replace learning the battlefield, turn structure, casting, combat, and win conditions that every set uses.

If you are learning alone, start with the Magic Arena tutorial or a guided tabletop product. If you already have a friend who wants to play a crossover, use a two-deck starter kit such as the official FINAL FANTASY Starter Kit. Confirm the format and player count before buying anything: a two-player starter kit is a different experience from a multiplayer Commander game.

What you need to learn before opening a crossover deck

Universes Beyond changes the setting, characters, artwork, and some card abilities; it does not replace Magic’s underlying rules. Your first objective is therefore not memorizing every character or keyword. It is becoming comfortable with the game loop that lets you understand any set:

  • Recognizing the library, hand, battlefield, graveyard, exile zone, and the cards in play.
  • Reading a card’s name, mana cost, type line, rules text, power, toughness, and other printed information.
  • Taking turns, playing lands, casting spells, resolving abilities, and moving through the turn phases.
  • Attacking, blocking, dealing combat damage, and tracking when a player loses or wins.
  • Looking up unfamiliar keywords instead of trying to memorize the entire glossary in advance.

Once those actions feel routine, a crossover card’s theme becomes an aid to comprehension rather than another obstacle. A card that refers to a familiar character may be easier to remember, but you still need to know when it can be cast, what type of permanent it is, and how its ability fits into the turn.

A practical learning sequence

Follow this order rather than trying to absorb the whole game from a card list.

1. Learn the play area and card anatomy

Use Wizards of the Coast’s official How to Play Magic: The Gathering guide as your first reference. It introduces the library (your face-down deck), hand, battlefield, card types, and the locations where cards move during play. Spend enough time with card anatomy to answer four questions at a glance:

  1. What does this card cost to cast?
  2. What kind of card is it, and can it remain on the battlefield?
  3. What does its rules text instruct you to do?
  4. If it is a creature, what are its power and toughness?

Do not begin by studying every keyword. The official guide places the keyword glossary after the basic explanations for a reason: a glossary is more useful when you already understand when a spell is cast and when a permanent is on the battlefield.

2. Practice the turn and combat loop

Play several short practice turns using simple cards. Concentrate on the order of operations:

  • Untap permanents, take the draw for the turn, and make the decisions available in your main phase.
  • Play a land when appropriate and cast spells by paying their mana costs.
  • Declare attackers, give the defending player a chance to declare blockers, and resolve combat.
  • Continue through the later main phase and end step before passing the turn.

You do not need to announce every phase formally in a casual teaching game, but both players should pause when an action could matter. Saying “move to combat?” or “any response?” prevents accidental skips and teaches the timing habits that become important with more complex cards.

3. Complete a guided first game

Magic Arena includes a tutorial designed for new players. A physical alternative is the Magic: The Gathering Foundations Beginner Box, which Wizards describes as providing two hands-on guided deck experiences, a reference booklet, playmats, and bonus decks for playing with a friend. Wizards’ Foundations material also describes ten Jumpstart decks intended to teach the game through ready-made combinations.

A guided game is valuable because it turns abstract rules into decisions: which land to play, whether to attack, what to block, and when to spend mana. Wizards’ own how-to-play guide gives the most practical advice in its invitation to “shuffle up and experience the game for yourself.” Use the tutorial or teaching product to reach an actual first game quickly, then return to the reference material when a question arises.

4. Decide the format before purchasing cards

A format determines which cards are legal, how decks are built, and how many people normally play. Ask the person or group you intend to play with three questions:

  • FINAL FANTASY is a whole new way to enjoy
  • Learn how to play magic
  • 2 FINAL FANTASY themed decks
  • Are you a hero? Or a villain? Challenge your friends to victory
  • Are we playing two-player games or multiplayer games?
  • Which format and card pool does the group use?
  • Should I bring a ready-to-play deck, or are we building decks from a limited pool?

Wizards’ format overview describes Standard as a two-player format and Commander as a multiplayer format. A Commander product, booster pack, and two-deck starter kit solve different problems; none is automatically the best first purchase. Match your product to the group’s established format so that your first game is legal and playable without extra rebuilding.

5. Add the crossover set’s specific rules

After you can complete a basic turn, read the cards from the chosen Universes Beyond set. Identify its recurring mechanics, named abilities, tokens, and any unusual vocabulary. For each unfamiliar mechanic, answer these questions:

  • Does it change how a card is cast, or does it trigger after something happens?
  • Does it create a token, counters, a replacement effect, or a continuous effect?
  • When does the ability trigger, and what choices are made when it resolves?
  • Does the mechanic matter only in this set, or can it interact with cards from other sets?

Read the card text first and consult the set’s official explanations or a keyword glossary for details. The crossover’s fictional setting is optional learning material; the rules text is not.

Choose a learning route that fits your situation

Route Best for What it provides Important limitation
Digital tutorial Someone learning alone or wanting repeatable practice Magic Arena offers a structured tutorial and repeatable games against digital opponents. Device, account, platform, and regional availability can vary; no particular user experience is guaranteed.
Foundations Beginner Box A learner who wants a theme-neutral tabletop introduction Two guided deck experiences, a reference booklet, playmats, and bonus decks for a friend. Wizards’ Foundations material describes ten Jumpstart decks for teaching through ready-made combinations. It teaches the common Magic foundation rather than the mechanics or characters of a particular crossover.
Universes Beyond Starter Kit Friends who want recognizable crossover characters in their first tabletop games The official FINAL FANTASY Starter Kit contains two ready-to-play 60-card decks, a Magic play guide, tokens, turn-order and attack/block reference cards, and two Arena code cards. Its listing says both decks can also be unlocked in Arena with the included codes. This is a FINAL FANTASY example, not a specification for every Universes Beyond product. It assumes you have a second player for two-player games.
Magic Academy event Someone who learns best with a teacher and other beginners Wizards describes a guided in-store event with decks or a Beginner Box experience, a brochure, and a pocket reference card. Events are local and time-sensitive. Check current listings with participating stores before making plans.

These routes are alternatives, not a ranking. Choose the one that gives you both an explanation and a chance to play immediately.

How to run your first tabletop session

Prepare the table

Use two complete, shuffled teaching decks. Put each deck face down as the library, leave room beside it for a graveyard, and keep the battlefield clear so permanents can be distinguished from cards in hand. Keep tokens and the turn-order or attack/block reference cards within reach. Use dice, counters, or a written note to track life and other counters.

If you are using the FINAL FANTASY Starter Kit, the two included 60-card decks are designed to face each other without additional deck construction. If you are using a Beginner Box, follow its guided deck instructions instead of mixing cards immediately.

Teach one decision at a time

  1. Explain what the hand and library represent, then show how a card moves to the battlefield or graveyard.
  2. Demonstrate a land and a spell. Have the learner identify the mana cost before you explain the effect.
  3. Play a creature and wait until the next turn before attacking with it, explaining that a creature normally cannot attack immediately unless a card says otherwise.
  4. Run one combat step with an obvious attack and a simple block. Explain that the attacking player chooses attackers and the defending player chooses blockers.
  5. Pause whenever a card uses a keyword. Read the reminder text, look up the term if needed, and continue rather than stopping to teach every possible interaction.

Let the learner make real choices. A teaching game should reveal why a decision matters, not turn one player into a narrator who makes every play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an open-information first game

For the first match, it is reasonable to explain cards in hand, reveal likely lines of play, and rewind an action that was based on a misunderstanding. After the learner can complete a turn independently, stop revealing hidden information. This transition teaches the difference between learning rules and making strategic decisions.

What to buy—and what to postpone

Start with a product that is playable out of the box

A ready-to-play deck removes the hardest early barrier: deciding which cards belong in a deck before you understand the game. The FINAL FANTASY Starter Kit is a concrete crossover-first option because it supplies two decks, teaching aids, tokens, and Arena codes in one package. Confirm that your intended opponent wants a two-player game before choosing it.

The Foundations Beginner Box is the better fit when the learner wants a guided, theme-neutral progression or when no crossover set has been chosen yet. It separates learning the rules from choosing a favorite fictional setting.

Use collections and boosters later

Wizards’ Foundations guidance positions the Starter Collection, which contains more than 350 cards, as a resource for learning deck construction and expanding after the initial lesson. It is not the same thing as two balanced, ready-to-play teaching decks. Play Boosters are likewise more useful once you know which colors, formats, and play styles you enjoy. Opening boosters before learning the game can leave a new player with interesting cards but no coherent way to play them.

Check the contents instead of trusting the product name

“Starter,” “beginner,” and “booster” do not describe interchangeable products. Before paying, verify:

  • How many complete decks are included.
  • Whether the decks are legal for the format your group plays.
  • Whether a rules guide, tokens, play aids, or a second-player deck is included.
  • Whether digital codes require an Arena account and are limited by platform or region.
  • Whether the product teaches a game or primarily expands an existing collection.

How to study a Universes Beyond set without getting overwhelmed

Separate story interest from rules knowledge

Read the set’s characters, locations, and story when they increase your motivation. You do not need to know the source fiction to resolve a spell correctly. Conversely, recognizing a character does not tell you what its card type or triggered ability does. Keep the card in front of you and follow its printed instructions.

Make a one-page mechanic sheet

For the first few games, write each recurring mechanic in plain language, followed by one example from your deck. Include the trigger or timing condition, the required choice, and what happens on resolution. Cross out mechanics that do not appear in the decks you are actually playing. This keeps your study focused on live decisions instead of the entire set’s card file.

Read cards in the order they matter

  1. Cards in your opening hand: identify lands, costs, and the first few legal plays.
  2. Cards on the battlefield: check static abilities and triggered abilities before attacking.
  3. Cards you draw: decide whether they affect the current turn or a later plan.
  4. Cards in the opponent’s deck: learn them when they appear rather than memorizing a complete list in advance.

After a game, review only the interactions that caused confusion. This creates a personal glossary tied to actual play.

A repeatable practice plan

Session one: recognition

Use the tutorial or a guided deck. Your goal is to identify card zones, play a land, cast a spell, and finish a turn without prompting. Ignore advanced strategy.

  • Diverse Card Selection: Includes 100 common and uncommon cards, 5 foil cards, and 1 legendary card for an exciting variety.
  • Stylish Storage: Comes with a sleek deck box to store and protect your card collection.
  • Immersive Artwork: Each card features vibrant, detailed artwork inspired by the Final Fantasy universe.
  • Endless Gameplay: With a vast array of characters, abilities, and strategies, the possibilities for deck-building are endless.

Session two: combat

Use the same decks. Concentrate on choosing attackers, evaluating blocks, and understanding what happens when creatures deal damage. Ask the learner to explain the combat decision before revealing your own reasoning.

Session three: set mechanics

Introduce the crossover deck’s recurring abilities one at a time. Keep the reference cards or mechanic sheet visible. If a card creates an unusual board state, pause and resolve it slowly rather than restarting the entire game.

Session four: format-appropriate play

Play under the rules your group actually uses. Remove teaching shortcuts, use normal hidden information, and confirm that the deck and player count match the format. At this point, the learner should be able to ask a precise rules question instead of saying only that a card “does something strange.”

Common first-game problems and fixes

Buying a booster instead of a playable deck

A booster supplies cards for collection growth or deck building, not necessarily two balanced decks and teaching instructions. Choose a Beginner Box or two-deck starter product when the immediate goal is learning to play.

Showing up with the wrong format

A 60-card two-player starter deck is not automatically a Commander deck, and a Commander game is not simply a larger two-player game. Ask the group about player count, deck size, and legal cards before you arrive.

Trying to memorize every keyword

Keep the official glossary or a reference card nearby. Learn the mechanics that appear in your current decks, then expand as new cards require it.

Confusing flavor text with instructions

Flavor text and character references provide context; rules text determines what happens. Read the rules text exactly, including “may,” targets, timing words, and costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skipping the opponent’s turn

New players often focus only on their own main phase. Ask what the opponent can attack with, what could block, and whether a spell can be cast before combat. This develops the habit of checking the board before committing to a play.

Assuming digital codes solve every access problem

The FINAL FANTASY Starter Kit listing includes two Arena code cards, but redemption still depends on having the required account and supported access. Treat the codes as an additional practice option, not as a substitute for the physical decks or an assurance of availability in every region.

When are you ready to play the crossover set?

You are ready when you can do the following without a teacher taking over:

  • Set up the library, hand, battlefield, graveyard, and tokens.
  • Read the important parts of a card and identify its mana cost and type.
  • Play a land, cast a spell, and explain what happens when it resolves.
  • Move through a turn and announce combat clearly.
  • Declare attackers and blockers, then determine the result.
  • Use a glossary or card reference to resolve an unfamiliar keyword.
  • Tell your opponent which format and deck you are using.

You do not need perfect strategic play or complete knowledge of the set. You need enough rules fluency to recognize what you do not know and look it up without losing track of the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start directly with a Universes Beyond Starter Kit?

Yes, if you have a second player and are willing to learn the shared turn, casting, and combat rules while using the kit. The smoother approach is to complete a tutorial or short guided game first, then use the themed decks for your first full match.

Is the FINAL FANTASY Starter Kit suitable for Commander?

It is described as two ready-to-play 60-card decks for two-player games. Ask your group which format it plays before assuming the decks are appropriate for Commander or another format.

Do I need to know FINAL FANTASY lore to play the cards?

No. Lore can make the theme more engaging, but card types, costs, and rules text determine how the game works. Learn the mechanics independently of the fictional setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does it take to learn Magic?

There is no established universal learning-time or success-rate statistic. Use the practical readiness checklist instead: you should be able to complete a turn, resolve combat, and look up unfamiliar keywords without a teacher making every decision.

Should I buy the Foundations Starter Collection first?

It is better treated as a follow-on deck-building resource. A guided Beginner Box or a two-deck starter product gives you playable decks and a clearer first lesson.

What if there is no Magic Academy event near me?

Use the Arena tutorial, a Foundations Beginner Box, or a friend-to-friend starter kit. Magic Academy availability depends on participating local stores and current event schedules.
