To become a professional graphic designer, learn to solve communication problems with visual organization, type, imagery and layout; practise a production workflow; and build a portfolio that makes your decisions and results clear. A degree is one common route, but it is not the only preparation path described by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The 15 chapters below are a practical learning sequence—not an official or universally required syllabus.

1. Understand what graphic designers do

Graphic design is visual communication: shaping words and images so an audience can understand an idea, notice a message or take an intended next step. The BLS describes designers as creating visual concepts by hand or with computer software to communicate ideas. Their work can appear in advertisements, brochures, magazines, reports and web pages.

The job is not simply making something attractive. A design also has to serve its audience, purpose and delivery context. Start by asking what the work needs to communicate and what the viewer should be able to do with that information.

2. Define the audience, purpose and message

Before choosing colors or arranging elements, clarify the communication problem. Identify who the design is for, what that audience needs to know, and which message should be most noticeable. The same subject may call for different visual treatment depending on whether the audience needs a quick announcement, detailed information or a persuasive argument.

  • State the main message in one plain sentence.
  • Identify the audience and what they need from the piece.
  • Separate essential information from supporting detail.
  • Note the format and where the design will be encountered.

These questions help turn a vague request into a design direction that can be discussed and evaluated.

3. Build composition and visual hierarchy

Composition is how visual elements are organized in relation to one another. Hierarchy determines what viewers notice first, next and last. AIGA/NASAD’s design-education material identifies visual organization, composition and information hierarchy as foundational competencies.

Practise arranging a headline, image and supporting text in several ways. Check whether the most important element is immediately apparent, whether related items feel connected, and whether the layout guides the eye through the information. A design can use many elements and still feel clear when their relative importance is deliberate.

4. Learn typography as a system

Typography affects both the character of a design and how easily people can read it. Treat type choices as part of the communication system: establish which text is primary, which supports it, and how those levels differ. AIGA/NASAD includes typography among the core areas of design competency.

When practising, compare type treatments for a headline, a short label and a longer passage. Look for legibility at the intended size and in the intended context. Avoid choosing type only because it looks distinctive; it must also support the message and the reading task.

5. Use color and images in context

Color and imagery help set emphasis, mood and meaning, but neither works in isolation. Consider what the audience needs to notice and whether the selected image or color treatment reinforces that message. Check that text remains readable against its background and that a decorative choice does not compete with important information.

For each image, ask what it contributes: does it explain, identify, illustrate or create a relevant impression? If it does none of those things, it may be unnecessary. The useful standard is not a favorite palette or image style, but whether the visual choice serves this particular communication problem.

6. Choose symbols and visual assets with care

Symbols can convey an idea quickly, but their meaning depends on context and audience. AIGA/NASAD identifies symbolic representation as one of the competencies designers study. Use a symbol when it makes the message easier to understand, not merely to fill space or make a design look more elaborate.

Check whether the symbol is recognizable in the setting where it will appear, and whether it could be misunderstood. Illustration and other visual assets should also have a clear role in the design. Their style should feel consistent with the message and with the other elements on the page.

7. Research the brief before designing

Design work begins with understanding the assignment, not with opening a software tool. The BLS lists determining project scope with clients or art directors among common duties. Clarify what is being requested, what the deliverable needs to communicate, and what information or feedback will shape the work.

  • Confirm the goal, audience and required content.
  • Identify the intended format and where the work will be used.
  • Ask who will review the concepts and provide feedback.
  • Record unresolved questions before committing to a direction.

Gathering references can help you understand the subject and explore possible approaches. Use references to inform your thinking rather than substitute for an original solution.

8. Design layouts for print and screen

A layout has to work in the medium where people will encounter it. A brochure, report or magazine page has different reading conditions from a web page. The BLS lists website design among common areas of study, alongside print-related topics, so learners benefit from practising across both kinds of output.

Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.

For each exercise, consider the format, the order in which information is read and the space available. Check that the hierarchy remains clear when the layout is viewed at its intended size. Do not assume a composition that works in one format will transfer unchanged to another.

9. Learn production basics

Strong concepts still need to be prepared correctly for their intended use. Typical graphic-design coursework may cover commercial graphics production, printing techniques and website design, according to the BLS. These subjects help connect visual decisions to the process that turns a design into a printed or published piece.

As you learn, understand what information the printer, publisher or web team needs from you. The exact production requirements depend on the project and destination, so confirm them rather than relying on a single setup for every job.

10. Learn software without relying on it

Computer skills matter, and graphic designers need to keep their knowledge of graphics and design software current. The BLS says designers maintain those skills through self-directed learning or formal training. However, software operation is a tool skill, not a substitute for composition, hierarchy, typography or a meaningful message—the areas emphasized in AIGA/NASAD’s competency framework.

Choose learning exercises that make you practise a design decision as well as a tool operation. Keep updating your skills as the software changes, but judge the result by how clearly it communicates rather than by how many features you used.

11. Present concepts and work through critique

Designers present concepts and incorporate feedback as part of the job. A useful presentation explains the communication problem, the intended audience and the choices that support the message. This gives a client or art director a basis for responding to the work, rather than leaving the discussion at personal preference.

When feedback arrives, identify what problem it points to. Ask clarifying questions when a request is unclear, then revise the parts of the design that affect the agreed goal. Treat critique as information to assess, not as an instruction to accept every visual suggestion without discussion.

12. Check the work before it is published or printed

Reviewing final work for errors is a stated part of the graphic designer’s workflow. Build a final check into each project, before the design is printed or published.

  • Check text and other required information for errors or omissions.
  • Review whether the main message and reading order remain clear.
  • Inspect the layout at the size and in the context where it will be used.
  • Confirm that the output meets the project’s production requirements.

A careful check catches problems that can survive several rounds of concept review, especially when attention has been focused on the overall visual direction.

13. Build a portfolio that shows your thinking

The BLS says candidates should have a portfolio demonstrating creativity and originality, and that employers rely on portfolios when making hiring decisions. A portfolio should therefore make both the finished work and its purpose legible. Show what the design needed to communicate and make the decisions behind the result understandable.

Coursework can help students build a portfolio, and internships can provide experience with the design process from concept to completion, according to the BLS. If you are self-directed, use projects that let you demonstrate the same abilities: interpreting a brief, developing a concept, making visual choices and refining the work.

Choose examples that demonstrate your range without making a reviewer guess what each piece was meant to do. Explain the audience, objective and your role, then show the final work clearly. Do not include work you cannot discuss or that does not represent the kind of design you want to pursue.

14. Work effectively with clients and teams

Graphic designers commonly establish project scope with a client or art director, present concepts and incorporate feedback. Communication is therefore part of the craft: you need to understand requests, explain design decisions and keep the work connected to the agreed purpose.

The BLS identifies communication and time-management among qualities important to designers. Use those skills to clarify expectations, keep track of revisions and make progress visible to the people involved. Graphic design may also sit alongside marketing work, but related roles are not interchangeable: focus on the specific visual communication task you have been asked to solve.

15. Choose a learning route and plan your career development

There is more than one way to prepare for graphic-design work. The BLS says a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related fine-arts field is typical. It also says that people with a bachelor’s degree in another subject may complete technical training in graphic design to meet many hiring qualifications. The routes below reflect those options; the available evidence does not establish that one is universally faster, cheaper or more successful.

Preparation route What the BLS describes What to look for in your learning plan
Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related fine-arts field A typical preparation route; common coursework includes studio art, design principles, computerized design, commercial graphics production, printing techniques and website design. Structured practice across design and production subjects, opportunities for critique, and work you can develop into a portfolio.
Bachelor’s degree in another subject plus technical graphic-design training A route the BLS says may meet most hiring qualifications for people who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field. Training that covers the design and production skills you need, with practical opportunities to develop and explain your work.

When comparing programs or self-directed study plans, consider the coverage of core design subjects, access to feedback or internships, and the chance to create portfolio work. The BLS also notes that internships can give students experience with design from concept to completion.

What the U.S. employment outlook says

For the United States, the BLS reported 253,100 graphic-designer jobs in 2025 and a median annual wage of $62,960 in May 2025. Its 2026 outlook projects employment to decline 2 percent from 2025 to 2035, while averaging about 16,000 openings each year over that decade, largely because workers will need to be replaced. These are national occupational figures, not a forecast for an individual or other countries. Pay and employment vary by location, industry, experience and work arrangement; the BLS reports that self-employed workers accounted for 20 percent of the occupation’s employment, so the wage figure does not describe every designer’s earnings.

As you develop, keep practising the fundamentals, refresh your software skills and use each project to strengthen the portfolio you present to employers or clients. The practical measure of progress is whether you can explain the communication problem, make purposeful visual choices and deliver work suited to its intended use.
